2010 Hanover College coaches Joe Austin - Head Coach The 2010 season marks Joe Austin’s third as Hanover’s head football coach. Austin, who guided the Panthers to a 5-14 record in his first two years at the helm, earned the reins of Hanover’s program after a successful tenure at the University of Dubuque (Iowa), where he served as offensive coordinator for three seasons. Austin, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, helped guide Dubuque’s squad to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 28 seasons. The Spartans finished 7-3 in 2007 and 6-4 in 2006. During his three seasons at Dubuque, Austin’s offensive unit set 33 school records. In 2007, the Spartans averaged 35.2 points and 433.4 offensive yards per game. Prior to his stint at Dubuque, Austin was offensive coordinator at Augsburg College (Minn.) for one season and was an offensive assistant coach at Concordia University (Minn.) for four seasons. During his season at Augsburg, Austin’s offense set five school records and increased its scoring by more than one touchdown per game. While at Concordia, the Golden Bears finished in the top-25 nationally in NCAA Division II in total offense. Austin’s unit was sixth nationally in 2003 with 474.6 yards per game and ranked seventh in 2002 with 447.8 yards per outing. Concordia averaged more than 35 points per game and set virtually every school passing, receiving and rushing record during Austin’s tenure. A former small-college athlete, Austin played quarterback at St. Ambrose University (Iowa) for two seasons. He suffered a broken vertebrae in his back that required reconstructive surgery and ended his playing career. Austin earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Concordia in 2001. He received a master’s degree in organizational management from Concordia in 2004.

Tom Ross - Associate Head Coach - Defense Tom Ross is in his third season leading Hanover’s defensive unit. Ross came to Hanover after serving as the head coach for the Stuttgart Scorpions in the German Football League for two seasons. Under his guidance, the Scorpions posted a 20-6-1 record and led the German league’s Southern Division in total offense, scoring offense, rushing, total defense and scoring defense. Ross also served as Stuttgart’s head coach in 2002 and was the team’s defensive coordinator in 2001. He previously served three stints at Augsburg College (Minn.). He was the Auggies’ defensive coordinator in 2003 and 2004. He worked as Augsburg’s special teams coordinator during the 1998 and 1999 seasons and also from 1983 through 1989. Ross was the team’s defensive coordinator from 1992 to 1994 and was the program’s offensive coordinator in 1991. He additionally worked as special teams coordinator at Carleton College (Minn.) in 1997. He was defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at St. Olaf College (Minn.) in 1995 and 1996. Ross received a bachelor’s degree from Augsburg in 1991.

Kenneth Eboh - Offensive Line Kenneth Eboh is in his third season on the Panthers’ sidelines. Eboh joined the Panthers’ staff after three seasons as running backs coach at the University of Dubuque (Iowa). Eboh was a two-year starter at Northwest Missouri State University and earned all-conference and all-region honors for the Bearcats. He was a member of that program’s 1999 NCAA II national championship squad. He earned a bachelor’s degree in interactive digital media from Northwest Missouri in 2000.

Steve Baudendistel - Secondary & Strength Coach Steve Baudendistel is in his seventh year as Hanover’s secondary coach. He also oversees the program’s strength and conditioning efforts. A 2001 Hanover graduate, Baudendistel played receiver for the Panthers from 1997-2000. He returned to his alma mater after one season as receivers coach at Anderson University. Last season, the Panther defense was ranked 6th nationally in interceptions.

2010 Hanover College coaches Jon Wheat – Linebackers Former Hanover defensive back Jon Wheat is in his second season on the Panthers’ coaching staff. A four-year letterwinner for Hanover’s program, Wheat earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Hanover in 2009.

Mike Dowell – Running Backs Mike Dowell is in his second season with Hanover’s program. A veteran high school coach, Dowell served as head coach at nearby Madison High School from 2003-2006. In addition to his tenure at Madison, he previously worked as the offensive coordinator at Perry Meridian High School (Ind.) for two seasons and was defensive coordinator at Jennings County High School (Ind.) for one season. He also has worked on the offensive staffs at Franklin Central High School (Ind.) and Seeger High School (Ind.).

Mike Foy - Receivers Mike Foy has been a member of Hanover’s offensive staff since 1994. During his stint with the Panthers, he was instrumental in leading the squad to seven conference titles and six berths in the NCAA III national playoffs. Prior to becoming an assistant with Hanover’s program, Foy was a fouryear letterwinner as a blocking back at Anderson University. While at Anderson, Foy paved the way for two 1,000-yard rushers.

Bill Griffin - Kickers Bill Griffin has been a fixture on the Hanover sidelines for the past 26 seasons. While covering numerous positions for the staff during his tenure, Griffin has been a part of eight conference championship squads, including seven national tournament appearances. He has continuously worked with the Panthers’ kicking game since the mid-1980s.

2010 Hanover College Season Preview

H

anover College head coach, Joe Austin, thought it would be a good idea for the Panthers to get an early start on their 2010 football season. The result was a study abroad history class that coincided with a goodwill football game against the Stuttgart Scorpions of the German Football League; a league made of a combination of German nationals and professional American players.

The trip to the Bavarian Region of Germany was everything Austin was hoping for. “Our study abroad trip in May was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our players. On our 11 day tour we studied in seven cities and enjoyed extensive visits to everything from castles to concentration camps. History professor Larry Thornton, who travelled with us and instructed the class, gave our players the chance to have a hands-on educational experience that they will never forget.” The game against Stuttgart also went well for Hanover. Junior Daniel Passafiume (Louisville, Ky.) returned the game’s opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and the Panthers were on their way to a 44-12 victory. Sophomore Colton Zeck (Walton, Ind.) had three touchdown receptions for more than 100 yards and was named offensive player of the game by Global Football, the game’s organizer. Junior Neal Ploeger (Greensburg, Ind.) was recognized as the defensive player of the game. Ploeger’s accomplishments included multiple sacks, a safety and a fumble recovery. With an unofficial record of 1-0 heading into their traditional NCAA sanctioned season, Hanover is optimistic that 2010 will be the year that fans will see their physical and mental maturation pay off on the stat sheets.

“We finally have upperclassmen!” Austin says excitedly. “During my first two years, we were extremely young and in a position that forced us to start about 20 freshmen over two seasons. This year, the first recruiting class that this staff brought in will be juniors. That means we will have more than 20 juniors to go with our six seniors. Last year, we only had 13 upperclassmen on the entire roster, so we are excited to be growing up.” The Panther upperclassmen, particularly the junior class, are longer in the tooth than one may expect. “A lot of our juniors have been either starting or getting a lot of varsity time since the second they stepped on campus. While they were taking their lumps as young players they were gaining a great deal of on-field experience that we hope will pay off for us,” says Austin. Indeed, Hanover will have starting experience in their corner as they report for the 2010 campaign with seven returning starters on offense and nine on defense. “We had four seniors on the all-conference team last year that will be missed. But, other than those four big contributors, most everyone is back this year,” according to Austin. So the 2010 Hanover Panthers will be older and wiser, in both football and worldly experience.

Defense

nse

Associate head coach and defensive coordinator Tom Ross will have nearly 20 returning letterwinners to work with this fall. Last year, the Panther defense enjoyed their second straight year of improvements in total defense, rushing defense and scoring defense.

The situation at the two safety positions appears to be more predictable, as two-time allHeartland Conference selection Rory Mannering (Walton, Ind.) returns for his junior year at strong safety. “Rory is the field general,” says Ross. “With the inexperience we will have at corner we need Rory to continue to improve this year and eliminate errors.”

Defensive Backs Perhaps the biggest hole left by last year’s graduates is the one left by Corry Stewart. Stewart led the NCAA with nine interceptions last year while earning all-American honors. Stewart is now playing professionally for the same Stuttgart Scorpions team that the Panthers played in May. Ross served as head coach of the Scorpions prior to coming to Hanover and helped introduce him to the current coaching staff. The team signed Stewart immediately following his graduation last May. Filling Stewart’s shoes at cornerback will be a trio of players: sophomores Lucas Mackey (West Terre Haute, Ind.) and Jason Chisholm (Florence, Ky.) and junior Matt Steward ( Plainfield, Ind.). Steward has the most experience of the bunch, starting games as both a freshman and sophomore at corner and safety. “Lucas and Jason both had good springs, and if some of our freshman can develop quickly, they could also jump into this group,” says Ross.

The race for the free safety position has two front runners; sophomores Shawn Gibson (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Xavier Jackson (Stuart, Fla.). Gibson played in multiple games, including one start, at quarterback for the Panthers last fall before moving to defense this spring. “Shawn is a guy we had to find a place for on the field. He had a great spring on defense,” Austin said. “We are excited to see what he can do when he gets fully comfortable at the position.” Jackson started nine games as a freshman in 2008.

Linebackers Sophomore Andy Dalton (Guilford, Ind.) took over as the starting middle linebacker late last season and turned the opportunity into allconference recognition.

8

2010 Hanover College Season Preview Despite limited action at the beginning of the year, Dalton dragged down 84 ball carriers which the second-highest total on the squad. Dalton will be joined by fellow returning starter, junior Cord Dorsey (Franklin, Ind.), while the battle for the third linebacker spot will likely be between senior Clayton Mannering (Walton, Ind.) and sophomore Josh Gilb (Aurora, Ind.). Mannering has starting experience in each of the last two years. Gilb earned multiple starting nods as a freshman in 2009. “All of our linebackers have had a lot of seasoning, so we’re expecting them to make a lot of plays,” says Ross. “They are by far the most experienced group on the team.” Defensive Line “We need more production from our defensive line,” says Ross. “We are expecting huge things out of senior Cameron Rode,” (Plantation, Fla.). Rode, a converted linebacker and part of the Hanover’s 4x100meter sprint relay, brings speed and explosiveness to the defensive end position. Rode will be joined by fellow returning starters junior Matt Sieg (Anderson, Ind.), sophomore Javier Milian (Miramar, Fla.) and junior Dylan Bostwick (Norwood, Ohio). All of whom can play both the tackle and the end spots. This group also will be bolstered by Ploeger at end. “We are trying to put our defensive ends in play-making roles,” says Austin. “We have speed that can give offensive tackles problems.”

OFFENSE For the first time in his tenure at Hanover, Austin will assume offensive coordinating duties for the Panthers. Austin’s previous success as an offensive coordinator at a trio of schools, most recently the University of Dubuque (Iowa), helped him land at Hanover in 2008. “There’ll be some differences in how we do things this year; things that fit my personality and my comfort zone. Things went really well in the spring and I think our players will find success with it in the fall.” Quarterback When the Panthers’ offense takes the field they will have an allHeartland Conference quarterback to lead them. Junior C.J. Croft (Fort Campbell, Ky.) led the league in total offense and touchdown passes, and also finished third in the HCAC in rushing, in 2009. “When C.J. got hurt early in 2008, it was a setback for him and the team, but in the long term, it will pay off for everyone.” With Gibson’s move to another position intended to be a full-time one, back-up duties will likely fall to a member of the freshman class. Running Back Joining Croft in the shotgun backfield will be junior Jeremy Cook (Batesville, Ind.). As a Panther, Cook has started every game he has been healthy, and according to Austin, “Jeremy is ready to have a breakout season.” Cook will be bolstered by a solid group of both returning and new backs. “We think we have some talent to support and push Jeremy.

9

We don’t yet know who will be the guy to step up, but we know someone will,” adds Austin.

Joining Passafiume will be Zeck, a returning starter, and junior Chris Cason (Crestview Hills, Ky.).

Wide Receiver Last year’s season finale was a big one for Passafiume. In the game against Franklin College, Passafiume set the NCAA all-divisions record for receptions in a game with 25 and also clinched the NCAA receptions per game title.

Zeck scored three times during his freshman season and led the team with 4.9 yards per carry as a running back. “We plan to use Colton’s versatility to our advantage. We’ll throw it to him and hand it to him again this year,” claims Austin.

The junior has already earned three spots on the all-HCAC team in his first two seasons - twice as a receiver and once as a kick returner. In 2009, Passafiume led the Heartland Conference in receptions, receiving yards, touchdowns, all-purpose yards and touchdowns. Austin says, “Daniel’s success last year has motivated him. He knows he can have a big impact on the success of our team and he knows that he can put up some special individual numbers in the process.”

The final starting role will be hotlycontested between veterans and rookies. Junior Matt Robinette (Otwell, Ind.) started at times in 2009 and has the ability to play tight end. Senior Mark Frey (Elkhart, Ind.) brings three years of experience to the competition. Senior Jimmy Girot (Connersville, Ind.) will vie for time in a hybrid tight end/fullback role. Offensive Line The tackle positions will be the strength of the Panthers’ offensive line behind senior Bruce Whitehead

(Petersburg, Ind.) and junior Matt Money (Oakwood, Ohio). Whitehead was an all-HCAC honoree in 2009. Money split starts between tackle and guard a year ago. He started at defensive tackle as a freshman. “In my opinion, we have two of the best tackles in the league this year,” says Austin. “They are converted defensive linemen which means they have good feet. We need them to help us get our running game going this year.” Brad Fox (Bargersville, Ind.) started at guard last year and is back for his junior season. Senior Tyler Mudd (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Devon Parker (Goshen, Ind.) were spot-starters a year ago and will look to fend off a good group of freshman. Austin adds, “Our offensive and defensive line players should be the cream of this recruiting class. There are several guys on both sides of the ball that could contribute or start right away.”

Panthers in germany

31

Panthers gain more than victory in Bavarian Classic A three-touchdown day. A kickoff return for a touchdown. An interception return for a touchdown. These highlights are only from a 60-minute span during the Hanover College football program’s 12-day spring term journey to Germany. Sophomore wide receiver Daniel Passafiume (Louisville, Ky.), freshman running back Colton Zeck (Galveston, Ind.) and freshman linebacker Andy Dalton (Guilford, Ind.) led the Panthers’ charge against the German Football League’s Stuttgart Scorpions during the Bavarian Classic, May 16.

In addition to the cultural connections through frequent interactions with the Scorpions, focal points of the trip included a journey to Munich along the Romantic Road. While in Munich, Hanover’s student-athletes explored Marienplatz, Munich’s city center and visited Olympic Park from the 1972 summer games. The Panthers also visited Heidelberg Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle, Old Town Hall and Dachau, the model Nazi German concentration camp. Hanover’s spring term trip was organized by Global Football, which has produced off-season football games in 18 nations for NCAA DIII football programs. Stuttgart plays in the German Football League’s 1st Bundesliga. The Scorpions have appeared in the league’s playoffs each season since 1998. Hanover defensive assistant coach Tom Ross provided extra insight during the journey. Ross led Stuttgart to a 20-6-1 record as the Scorpions’ head coach in 2006 and 2007. He also served as Stuttgart’s head coach in 2002 and was the team’s defensive coordinator in 2001.

Hanover players Cameron Rode (left) and Matt Money (right) with two members of the Stuttgart Scorpions after the Bavarian Classic.

Passafiume returned the opening kick 85 yards for touchdown. Zeck scored three touchdowns and Dalton returned an interception for another Hanover touchdown in the Panthers’ 44-13 victory. Cultural and on-the-field memories were plentiful for more than 40 players who participated in Hanover’s May 6-17 trip. The Panthers, accompanied by history professor Larry Thornton, combined daily coursework in the history of modern Germany with football practices in preparation for a game against Stuttgart at Gazi Stadium.

Heartland Conference

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference is a union of nine private small colleges and universities from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Formed in 1997, the Heartland Conference is affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association and participates at the Division III level, which offers no athletic scholarships. The league currently sponsors men’s championship in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Championships are awarded in eight women’s sports, including: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball. Five member schools were formerly affiliated with the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference and three schools were members of the Association of Mideast Colleges. Anderson University, Franklin College, Hanover, Manchester College and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology were each charter members of the ICAC. Bluffton University, Defiance College and the College of Mount St. Joseph were each members of the AMC.

Junior quarterback C.J. Croft led the Heartland Conference in individual total offense in 2009. Croft averaged 304.4 total yards per contest and tossed a league-best 27 touchdown passes.

Rose-Hulman rejoined the league in 2006. Transylvania University, a former member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), officially joined the Heartland Conference in 2001. Earlham College, a former member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, was been approved for HCAC membership last year and begins league competition this fall. Hanover, WE’RE FOR YOU (Fight Song) In the hills of Indiana, Where the broad Ohio flows, Stands a college old in story, In our hearts her mem’ry glows, Her devoted sons and daughters, Bring to her illustrious fame, And where e’er their footsteps wander, They will praise her name. Chorus Hanover drive on down the field, Hanover hit that line, Hanover on to victory, Roll up that score this time, Undaunted on high our colors fly, The crimson and the blue, So we’ll fight, yes, we’ll fight, For the goal’s in sight, Here’s to Hanover, We’re For You!!!
