SENIORS LEXINGTON BREAKS GROUND ON NEW SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER. The groundbreaking for Lexington’s new senior center now under construction at Idle Hour Park was held in October. Lexington’s EOP Architects designed the new senior center. EOP consulted with Boston-based architect John Catlin. Beth Mills, commissioner of the Department of Social Services, described planning for the new senior center as a collaborative effort. “We looked at examples from modern senior centers, received input from other city agencies and conducted a needs assessment,” Mills said. “Most importantly, we heard from seniors. We also listened to neighbors and worked with Southland Christian Church, which is located next to the new center.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, when the current senior center opened in 1983, residents age 60 or older accounted for 12.6% of the population.

Seniors now make up 16.5% of Lexington’s population and are projected to pass 20% in coming years. The city budgeted $13 million for the project, with goals of achieving LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Marrillia Design & Construction is the general contractor. Construction is expected to be complete by early 2016. The public can keep up with project updates by visiting www.lexingtonky.gov/ seniorcenter.

EXPANDING SRC OF LEXINGTON, a remanufacturer of engines, drive engine components and hydraulics for industrial equipment, plans to expand its operations in Fayette County and is expected to create up to 50 new jobs and invest nearly $1.9 million into the project. In addition to the new jobs, SRC plans to renovate and expand its current facility on Eastland Drive. The 12,000-square-foot expansion will include more production space, a remodel of its current office facilities, and the purchase of additional equipment to accommodate new business and meet growing customer demand. “SRC is an employee-owned company, and our purpose is to create jobs, grow wealth for our employee owners and to make an impact

The new facility is almost twice as large as the current one.

The company has experienced significant growth in its first five years, and revenues are projected to double by 2019. SRC of Lexington currently has 100 employees.

AWARDS LEXINGTON LANDSCAPING WAS DECLARED AMONG THE BEST in the nation recently at the 2014 America in Bloom national awards program held in Philadelphia.

The city received a prestigious “four bloom rating” and a special award for the best commercial streetscape. Lexington also received a special mention for its landscaped areas.

In their evaluation of Lexington America in Bloom judges stated, “Lexington’s economy is an interesting mix of horses, health care, high tech, bourbon, the University of Kentucky, and tourism. During the descent of our flight into the airport, we were astounded to

see lovely farms with lush green pastures, trees, fences and horses,” “City vision is responsible for creating an area where you can still take a Sunday drive starting from the heart of the city and be in the country in 20 minutes,” The evaluation gave Lexington a score of 831.5 points out of a possible 1000 points, which produced the four bloom rating. The highest rating is five blooms. “For Lexington to win an award on the first year of participation in America in Bloom is noteworthy,” said Ann Garrity, chair of America in Bloom Lexington, a group of local citizens involved in the program. “Of the 33 cities and towns in the 2014 competition, only 16 won an award of special mention. “Our judges really liked so many things about our city and the farmlands that surround it. Their recommendations were made in the spirit of helping us make a great city even better.”

“Congratulations to Ann Garrity and to our volunteer America in Bloom Committee,” Mayor Jim Gray said. “And thanks to the members of our Parks staff, who do a great job with the gardening. We have so many reasons to be proud of our city, and many of them are homegrown, just like our flowers.”

Lexington Vice Mayor Linda Gorton, who

has been instrumental in Lexington’s participation in the program, said, “We are gratified to receive the awards and the feedback from the judges and look forward to implementing some of the suggestions they made for taking our public space landscaping to the next level.” Lexington’s public spaces were evaluated on six criteria: overall impression,

environmental awareness, heritage preservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral design. The judges were landscape architect Stephen Pategas and award-winning gardener Evelyn Alemani, who visited Lexington in June. Since the founding of America in Bloom in 2001, more than 250 cities in 45 states have participated in the program. Cities report the evaluation process can lead to increased community involvement, civic pride and decreased vandalism. THE LEXINGTON CHAPTER OF THE FRATERNAL ORDER OF FIREFIGHTERS needs a large building to use for the 2014 Firefighter Toy Program. This will be the 83rd year the F.O.F has sponsored the toy drive for children in Fayette County. On average, the program provides toys for over 3,000 Fayette County kids who might not otherwise have toys for the holidays. This year, the Lexington Firefighter Toy Program will begin accepting applications on November 11 and the application process will end on November 26. The toy giveaway will be on December 13. The F.O.F relies on the generosity of Lexington citizens and businesses to provide this program. The program’s greatest need this year is the use of a building around 10,000 square feet in size, with a parking lot. The F.O.F would need the building from November 1st till December 31st.

Thanks to the generous support of Sheabel Veterinary Hospital, Boarding, and Grooming, the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) is able to recognize veterans of the KY National Guard (KYNG) year round with its “Canines Helping Our Military Personnel” or CHOMP program, which provides free adoptions to qualifying KYNG veterans. In honor of this Veterans Day, LHS will be expanding our free veteran-based adoption services through a special offering made available to all military branch veterans through the end of November.

City leaf collection to begin Nov. 10 L

exington’s 2014 vacuum leaf collection program is scheduled to start on Monday, November 10 and continue through Friday, December 19. The one-time service is available to Fayette County residents who receive city waste collection services.

Residents should visit the city’s website at www.lexingtonky.gov/leaves to find out when a leaf collection crew will be working in their neighborhood. Adverse weather can affect scheduled dates. New this year, weekly updates detailing what streets have been serviced and what ones are next will be posted online.

Leaves should be raked into the service area between the sidewalk and the street the Sunday before the scheduled vacuum collection week. Leaves should not be raked into the street, because it can cause traffic hazards and clog storm drains. Piles should contain only leaves. Other objects, such as tree limbs and rocks, can result in injuries to crew members or can damage the equipment.

Gill Heart Institute’s new inpatient unit to open in December

F

or now, the sounds on the 8th floor of Pavilion A are of drills, hammers, and animated conversations about ceiling height and lighting clearance. Preparations for the opening of UK HealthCare’s Gill Heart Institute’s new inpatient unit are at a fever pitch, with legions of construction workers coordinating with UK Facilities Planning staff to complete fit-out of UK Chandler Hospital’s 8th floor before its scheduled opening in early December.

Once complete, the 64-bed inpatient unit will feature one of the largest cardiovascular intensive care units in the country putting some of the nation’s most advanced cardiac care in Kentuckians’ backyards.

The floor is “service-based,” which means technology such as x-ray or dialysis comes to the patient’s bedside minimizing the handoffs and transport which can be stressful for a patient and his or her family. An echocardiography and vascular laboratory suite will be housed within the unit so that physicians can get information and make care decisions quickly.

Because Gill nursing staff cares for patients who require advanced cardiac monitoring, a Central Monitoring Station (CMS) is embedded on the floor with staff trained specifically on the unit’s equipment and protocols.

“That way, if there’s an emergency with one patient while their nurse is providing care for another patient, the CMS nurse can pick up the phone and get that patient cared for immediately,” says Lacey Buckler, director of Cardiovascular Nursing Services.

The cardiovascular floor in Pavilion A will be the first unit in Chandler Hospital to use new barcode technology for medication administration, streamlining delivery of prescribed medications to patients, minimizing medication errors and enhancing patient safety.

Another highlight of the floor will be a new, state-of-the art interactive patient television system that will be installed in every room. The service will allow patients to access information about their illness and their care.

“Research has demonstrated over and over again that an informed patient is more involved in their care and more likely to stay healthy once they leave the hospital,” said Buckler. “In conjunction with face-to-face education by doctors, nurses, and other staff, using the television in patient rooms to deliver information about heart disease prevention and treatment provides another opportunity for patient ‘buy-in’ which is critical to a patient’s long term health outcome.”

Preparations are underway elsewhere in the hospital as well. Forty-four new nurses have been hired and are in intensive training for work in a cardiovascular ICU setting. Thirty more were hired to complete staffing for the telemetry progressive areas and the central monitoring station.

By 2015, UK HealthCare’s sickest cardiac patients will be settled in to receive the highest standard of care.

Meet the band

Lexington Lab Band has its roots at Southland Christian Church

ver heard of the Lexington Lab Band? How about LLB? If not, you’re about to. Lexington has no shortage of cover bands and, strictly speaking, that’s what the Lexington Lab Band (also known as LLB) is. However, they are not your typical cover band. Far from it. This collection of supremely talented and experienced local musicians will take the stage at the Lyric Theater on November 6 to play as LLB for the first time ever before a live audience. Believe me when I say that they will astound you.

Why such praise for an unknown local band? The band might have a low profile here in Lexington but that doesn’t mean it’s unknown. The Lexington Lab Band is a studio band whose venue for the past 15 months has been the Internet.

It’s there where it has made a splash, having recorded and released 34 music videos that have been viewed almost 300,000 times by people in 70 countries.

Cover bands play–with varying levels of skill–popular songs. Tribute bands cover the work of a particular artist, paying special attention to the artist’s look and sound. LLB is a cover band that plays like a tribute band but looks like a cover band. LLB doesn’t try to copy the look of the bands they cover, but they do copy the sound. Oh boy do they copy the sound. As in, exactly.

The band is the brainchild of Mike Vandemark, the Programming Director at Southland Christian Church. Each weekend Mike oversees the approximately 90 musicians who play at Southland’s multiple services. LLB has a rotating cast but the band’s core members– Mike, (guitar, bass, vocals, keyboard), Dale Adams (guitar), Derrick Breaux (bass, guitar, vocals), Ryan McQuerry (drums), and Rob Pottorf (keyboards)–have either played with Mike at Southland, in other bands that Mike was or is part of, or have played with other members of the band in acts of their own. The idea for LLB came about from Mike’s interest in the musical approach of bands like the Johnson Brothers.

“I had always been enamored with their approach,” said Mike. They will do a whole album start to finish, like Abbey Road, for instance. So it’s always been in the back of my mind to get people together to play a whole album. I’ve always been academic with music and I like to learn how things go, not necessarily to want to cover a song and change it but I want to know how it was originally done and dive into it. So, I kept thinking how can we do that and if we do it is anybody in Lexington going to come and hear it and is anyone going to want to put that much work into learning a whole album every month?”

Those questions remain unresolved until he happened one night across an episode of a show called “Live at Darryl’s House” starring Darryl Hall. “He brings in a musical guest each week and they play a few of each other’s songs and have dinner,” said Mike “It’s like a musical reality TV show and it’s amazing. I saw it and thought to myself, ‘we could do this. We could learn 4-5 songs and do this every six or eight weeks.’ So I reached out to Dale specifically because I knew if I was going to do this it was going to be with him.”

“I’m very lucky he included me,” said guitarist Dale Adams, with a modesty that belies his reputation as one of the region’s finest players. Known to the Internet as Tonedr, Dale is an imposing presence in the online guitar tutorial community. He has posted to YouTube more than 150 instructional videos that have been viewed millions of times.

Dale himself had been kicking around the idea of a band that covered a different artist in every set. Mike and Dale pooled their ideas, figured out an approach that could work given their time constraints, and thus was born their idea of not just covering the work of bands they liked, but covering those works exactly.

Once they decided to go forward with their idea they also decided to make a video record of the project. The videos added to the project an unforeseen dimension and YouTube gave the band an audience it didn’t know it had “The video guys are so good,” said Mike. “The first time I saw the video I was like ‘Oh my gosh, here’s a record of what we did and the video really brought it all to life.”

When the band decides on an artist it wants to cover, they choose four or five songs and each member commits to intensive study and practice to get his part just right.

“We live with it for six weeks and then come together on a Monday night to rehearse and then film it on a Tuesday. We don’t rehearse together for six weeks and that’s the magic of it, really. Dale, for instance, comes in knowing his part and all we have to do is fit the puzzle pieces together. It’s really an academic thing more than a jam session, hence ‘Lab’ in the band’s name. We are playing the song and enjoying it because we aren’t having to figure out our parts together. It’s a different way of approaching a band,” said Mike. “People are blown away and the beauty of it to us is that we have studied and it’s like an academic exercise to us.”

“There are a lot of cover bands out there but we didn’t make apologies for trying to cover it exactly like the record,” said Dale. “I think a lot of people like to hear a cover that goes in a different direction but people tell us that they appreciate the effort that it took to get as close as we could to the original.”

“We want to do something that is not easy,” he continued. We do a lot of stuff

Putting a little more effort into a single artist was an interesting idea for me and I think it was for Mike, too. In my case, listening to the guitar player for 60-90 days or longer gives me stuff that I never would have thought of or come across. It gives you a fresh view of your instrument.”

To a non-musician, copying a song and getting each note exactly right must seem like an impossible task. It’s not easy but “when you’ve played guitar as long as Dale has or been a musician as long as I have, you hear things and it’s like the English language. You hear a musical phrase and it’s like a word and you just know it,” explained Mike. “You can learn ‘new words’ quickly when you know the language.” So, what’s the goal? Amazingly, for a group with this much talent there really isn’t one. “It’s about the music,” explained Mike. There are so many times when artists get caught up in things that aren’t about music. This is supposed to be fun and that’s one of the unique things about this band that people don’t understand. This isn’t going to generate any money for us. That’s not why we do it. We do it because we enjoy each other, we enjoy the music, we enjoy playing, and we enjoy learning.”

If there is one objective it might be to make Lexington a better live music town. “Lexington has just not been a great live music town,” continued Mike.

“The only way for that to change is for all of us to find a way to connect. It’s not for a lack of musicians. It’s more for lack of a community. We just don’t know each other. It would be nice to know other players so that when we take on a project we can quickly identify someone who may fill a musical need we have,” he continued. “I want to get to know other musicians here in town. “We are amateurs but I try to create a professional environment so that the best musicians will want to be part of it. Musicians want to play with other great musicians. They want expectations,” said Mike.

The band’s efforts in that regard are evident in their videos. Each episode has featured musical guests who bring to the “lab” talents that are needed for that particular project. Steve Broderson of local band The Twiggenburys lent his vocal talents to LLB’s Cars videos. Tom Jones and Jim Carpenter (Panic Show) played in the Steely Dan videos. Mike Huff and James Cornett helped the band cover Aerosmith, and Kevin Treadway and Jay Johnson of Big River Band were guests for the Merle Haggard sessions. If the band has any goal with this experiment, then this type of collaboration and musical networking is it.

Every guest musician has agreed to appear with the band for the November 6 performance, a sure sign that everyone is both proud of the work they have done and eager to see what the local reception will be. So, for one night only, Lexington’s Lyric Theater will play host to Aerosmith, Billy Squier, The Cars, The Doobie Brothers, Journey, Merle Haggard, Steely Dan, and U2. If you close your eyes you when the music starts you just might believe it.

Health care by design UK students help with hospital project

A recent collaborative project at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital Emergency Department examined the new space to see how the current design works and what can be learned for the design of future floors and health care facilities.

“We do the best job we can in solving the owner’s puzzle, if you will, with the design process, but we don’t often go away with an understanding of how the building actually works,” said David Humlong, project manager at GBBN Architects, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

To explore the design implementation at the UK Emergency Department, UK HealthCare and health care designers at GBBN teamed up with Assistant Professor Lindsey Fay and Professor Allison Carll-White in the UK College of Design School of Interiors.

“We’re always trying to make design better for our users, and that’s staff, visitors and patients. GBBN, having such a strong focus in health care design, was very, very interested in knowing as a result of their work that they did at UK what was working well, and what may need to be rethought, not just for this space but also for future design projects,” said Carll-White.

When designing a new facility, much research and preparation goes into trying to meet the needs and specific requests of the anticipated users. However, it can be difficult to predict what needs the department may have in a year, five years or 10 years down the road.

To get a true sense of the day-to-day use of the UK Emergency Department, students and faculty from the School of Interiors implemented a multi-methodological study, which utilized observations, surveys, focus groups, and physical measurements to amass data. The post-occupancy evaluation (POE) gave UK students a wonderful opportunity to develop hands-on experience with research in an environment with which they previously had little experience.

“We were in the Emergency Department for over 200 hours for the first phase. We worked in five teams of two; engaging undergraduate and graduate researchers in this process. We asked them week by week to carry out different research studies,” Fay said.

“Anytime somebody wants to look at something you are doing, it’s going to help you, because there are going to be things that you don’t know and then there are going to be things that you knew, but you needed the data to prove,” said Patti Howard, enterprise director for emergency services.

The extensive study done by the UK School of Interiors found several successes of the emergency department.

For example, the research found the use of pods, as well as the designs of the pediatric emergency care center, the trauma unit, and the imaging unit to be major assets to the facility.

The “pods,” which are patient rooms clustered around a central nurse’s station, allow staff to stay close to their patients without having to travel far to check on them or gather medications

and supplies.

The dedicated pediatric center was a favorite of both visitors to the facility and staff. “That’s probably one of the best things we did was to have the Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center. In the old Emergency Department we had a small area that we called Kids Care where we saw children, but we had very few beds. So that was really a big plus for us to be able to have that space, to have 12 dedicated beds,” said Howard.

The faculty at the UK School of Interiors can see exactly why the pediatric center is such a hit.

“In the waiting room GBBN used a lot of positive distractions. So there was an interactive wall, there was a computer station, there were some TVs; there were just things to help children who were probably not feeling well or experiencing some kind of trauma to feel comfortable,” said Carll-White.

In addition to the successful parts of the department’s design, the research also revealed a few areas that could use improvement.

Through observation and interviews with staff members, the faculty and student research team found a lack of line of sight to the intake area was problematic.

To address these issues, UK School of Interiors and GBBN held a one-day charrette, or design workshop, at the Cincinnati-based firm to rethink the spaces.

“What we found is that having the security situated right next to the entrance would give them sight lines to the doors leading back to the emergency department, but then also provide an opportunity to greet patients or families when they are walking in,” said Fay. “One scenario also took triage and broke it up into two different design areas with a central space moving from the entry point to the waiting area of the emergency department.”

“The fact that they were able to publish their study is very beneficial for all of us,” said Howard.

Outcomes from this research have resulted in several research publications in the HERD Journal, the Journal of Learning Spaces, and several conference presentations including two at the Healthcare Design Conference.

In addition to providing a wealth of data on design for future health care facilities, the collaboration has been a valuable opportunity for UK students giving them skills that will benefit them in their careers.

“I really liked the immersive quality of the post-occupancy. The biggest thing I feel like I learned was how to do behavioral mapping. I think it’s something I can offer professional offices in the future, that I do know how a post-occupancy evaluation works, and I know how to evaluate successes and failures in a space.

It was good to be in the space, to see how it functioned, to see the how the different user groups needed to use the space, and how the design was functioning,” said Sabrina Mason, a 2014 UK graduate and new instructor at the UK School of Interiors, from California, Kentucky.

In the end though, it’s helping make visits to the hospital the best experience possible at a trying time. Fay says, “To be able to give back and to be part of that patient’s or that family’s caregiving years after the building is turned over to the owners, is very rewarding.”

Read all about it Book Lovers celebrate third decade of Kentucky Book Fair

BY JOHN FISKE The annual Kentucky Book Fair (KBF) is celebrating its 33rd year of hosting a celebration of literacy in the Bluegrass. The KBF is one of the longest running annual book fairs in America.

Book Fair manager Connie Crow says, “We’ve got this almost down to a science.” The event is in its third decade now.

Founded in 1981 as a non-profit charity, the KBF was created with a specific purpose in mind: to celebrate and promote literacy. The founders wanted to give authors a platform to interact and meet with their readers, and they wanted a celebration of the profession while raising money for the advancement of literacy. The result was a book fair, held once a year in the state’s capitol where authors from around Kentucky could come together, sign books, meet their readers, and ultimately raise money for public schools and libraries.

Gigi Phillips, with Nick Clooney, will sign My Kentucky Home: Amazing People & Places of My Kentucky Home. Popular Lexington food blogger Rona Roberts will sign her new book Classic Kentucky Meals: Stories, Ingredients & Recipes from the Traditional Bluegrass Kitchen at this year’s fair.

For over three decades the KBF has brought the state of Kentucky together once a year to meet with authors, sign books, and enjoy the company of other bibliophiles. Open to the public, the KBF hosts over 4,000 people, and the turnout this year is expected to exceed five thousand patrons. The patrons of the fair will enjoy time with over 150 authors from around the country as they showcase their works of literature ranging from poetry, to children’s books, to novels. The KBF “attracts writers of all genres and patrons of all walks of life” to celebrate and honor the profession of writing. Manager Connie Crow says, “90-95 percent of authors at the book fair have a connection to Kentucky in some way.”

With over 150 authors attending the KBF, patrons will have the ability to purchase books and get them signed by authors from across the country. This also gives the authors the opportunity to interact one-on-one with their audiences, and build relationships with those that appreciate their work. The event is designed to bridge the gap between the author and the reader, and provide a platform to build relationships.

This year’s book fair includes a special focus for young adults. More than 25 young adult authors will be present at the book fair, with some special guest appearances from nationally renowned authors. Madeline Roux, who wrote Allison Hewitt is Trapped will attend. Another popular young adult author, April Genevieve Tucholke will make her way to the KBF to showcase her latest novel, Between the Spark And The Burn.

The proceeds from the fair all go toward funding for schools and public libraries for things such as purchasing literature, and providing reading and literacy services. The Book Fair Corporation is comprised of dozens of volunteers who work together to ensure each year surpasses the preceding year. KBF has donated over $360,000 towards the conservation and advancement of
