HEALTH THANKS TO THE 2014 PINK RIBBON FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN, the Lexus Store of Lexington contributed $4,000 to help provide mammograms to the underserved. Money raised was contributed to the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, part of KentuckyOne Health, and will support the Yes Mamm! Program, which provides lifesaving screenings, patient navigation and travel assistance at no cost for those who qualify. “So many women in our community go without regular mammograms and breast screenings because they’re cost-prohibitive,” said Kimberly Stigers, M.D. “We’re grateful that through this funding, we’re able to bring healing, hope and wellness to all through lifesaving screenings.” Throughout the month of October, the Lexus Store of Lexington adorned new and used vehicles with pink ribbons. A portion of sales from each Lexus purchased was contributed to the Yes Mamm! Program. “Lexus believes in giving back to our communities and we’re hopeful that this donation will help provide a needed service for the underserved in our community,” said Dan Defler, general manager, The Lexus Store of Lexington. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since 1989, which is believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening, increased awareness and improved treatment. More than 570 Kentucky women will die of invasive breast cancer this year, yet with early detection, the five-year survival rate is above 80 percent. Access to mammograms through programs like Yes Mamm! is vital to improving these statistics among the underserved. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but the resources of the Yes Mamm! program are available 365 days a year and is 100 percent funded by the generosity of our partners,” said Di Boyer, director of major gifts, Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation. EDUCATION CARING TRANSITIONS recently donated $1,200 to the Campus Kitchen at the Uni-

versity of Kentucky to help the students create a program to serve people ages 50 to 59 in need of meals, groceries and dietary mentoring. The Campus Kitchens Project is a national network of 42 schools that has

been operating since 2001. Since 2006, the project has recovered more than 3.6 million pounds of food and provided 2.2 million meals. The chapter at the University of Kentucky just launched in early November 2014.

ourbon is booming in Kentucky and around the world. In the last two years alone, the number of distilleries has tripled, and the number of people employed in the industry has nearly doubled. Currently, there are more barrels of bourbon aging in Kentucky than there are citizens in the Commonwealth.

A new documentary, “Kentucky Bourbon Tales: Distilling the Family Business,” drawn from oral history interviews conducted by the University of Kentucky Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History, introduces viewers to the colorful characters who craft Kentucky’s signature spirit.

The program, which also explains the science and art behind the bourbon-making process and details how the beverage became a global phenomenon, first aired in December on KET and will repeat in January.

In partnership with the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA), “Kentucky Bourbon Tales” is part of a multi-year effort by the Nunn Center in the UK Libraries to document the history of bourbon in the state, and features the stories of the master distillers and bourbon barons from iconic distilleries that participate in the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® tour, including Wild Turkey, Heaven Hill, Brown-Forman, Woodford Reserve, Bulleit, Maker’s Mark,

Four Roses and Jim Beam, as well as the new Michter’s Distillery and Independent Stave Cooperage.

“The bourbon industry plays a major role in Kentucky’s social, cultural and commercial history, especially from the global perspective. This documentary captures the essence of Kentucky bourbon’s recent history and renaissance, and promises to both educate and entertain,” said Nunn Center Director Doug Boyd.

“Kentucky Bourbon Tales: Distilling the Family Business” was directed by Joanna Hay and produced by the Nunn Center. The archived oral history interviews can be accessed in their entirety via the Nunn Center’s online catalog www.kentuckyoralhistory.org, and the project’s website, www.nunncenter. org/bourbon, features more than 175 video excerpts from the oral history project.

Adopt a pet for a healthier home and family

P

ets are great. They’re fun, and funny. They’re cute right when you need a cute moment the most (and if you happen to have a camera handy, they’ll carry you to internet fame). They keep life interesting. But we shouldn’t just focus on warm, fuzzy feelings when we talk about how great our pets are, because they’re also great for our health in so many ways. Here are my top five personal favorites.

Pets are allergy busters. Kids who grow up with cats and dogs in the house are up to 33% less likely to develop allergies and asthma, according to a study by James Gern, an allergy and immunology researcher at the University of Wisconsin. That’s because young kids’ immune systems are still developing; their bodies will be better prepared to handle germs and potential allergens down the road if they get acquainted with them early on. In other words, let your kids play in the dirt and snuggle with a pet – because not only did Gern’s study find that pets reduce allergies and asthma, it also showed that they developed stronger immune systems across the board.

Pets make you happy. We’re not just talking about generic, “Oh, I’m so happy to see you, Fido!” happy here – spending time with your pets actually changes your brain chemistry to make you a happier, lessstressed individual. Studies have shown that petting a dog or cat raises a person’s serotonin and dopamine levels (aka, happy juice for your brain), and lowers cortisol levels (aka, the much less popular stress juice). Know what else has that effect on your brain? Heroin. Pets are a much healthier alternative, although you may still become addicted. In all seriousness, stress reduction is a really important thing, and pets are pros at it. Studies have found that people with pets have lower blood pressure, lower anxiety, and are better able to cope with depression. Alzheimers patients with pets have lower incidences of anxious outbursts. And, for those times when you can’t just cuddle the stress away, the American Journal of Cardiology reports that pet owners are better at adapting to stressful situations.

Pets are good for your heart. Multiple studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Health, among others, have compared risk factors and recovery for heart problems between people who own pets and people who don’t, and pet owners – especially cat owners - did better across the board. Pet

owners have lower cholesterol. They have lower incidence of heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks. And following a heart attack, pet owners recover more quickly and live longer. My dad had heart surgery in 2014, and I know he got a lot of comfort from my parents’ two feline friends in the weeks that followed; next time I see them, I’ll whisper a quick “thank you” for helping with the recovery process.

Pets keep you active. Cats won on the heart health front, and dogs win on the active lifestyle front. The minimum recommended physical activity a day is a 30 minute walk; since I adopted a dog a few years back, I’ve found that I spend at least twice that amount of time walking around the neighborhood, in the woods, or at the park. That little bit of physical activity doesn’t seem like much, but it makes a huge difference in your overall health – your circulatory system, your bones, and your muscles will all thank you for it.

It’s worth mentioning here that a more active lifestyle may contribute to some of the other health benefits attributed to pets, including cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and heart health; but the studies cited here all point to pets making a significant impact beyond their role in just getting you up and moving.

Especially cats, who don’t get you up and moving so much as they keep you sedentary by constantly curling up on your lap at the exact moment you were about to get up.

Pets keep you independent.

Dogs are the big winners in this category, too. Independence is something a lot of us – myself included – often take for granted. But for many people, including the elderly and people with disabilities, independent living may not be a given. A service animal can be the difference between remaining independent and at home, and depending on family or professional help, or moving to an assisted living facility. Service dogs can do amazing things; they can sense drops in blood sugar and on-coming seizures, navigate busy sidewalks and streets, find fire exits and elevators, carry medications, retrieve dropped objects, fetch a walker or a wheelchair, even bring you the phone, tidy the house, and unload

groceries (and so much more)…all while being loving companions.

I’ll say it again: Pets are great.

For those you who have pets at home, I hope this makes you love them even more.

Our dogs and cats do so much for us, and they never ask for much in return —just a

safe, warm home, a little love, and some food in their bowl (a little more food please…little more…ok, that’s good). For those of you who don’t have pets at home, but are now seriously considering the health benefits, go spend some time at a shelter or rescue this week. 5-7 million pets enter adoption centers in the United States every year, and believe me when I say they need you just as much as you need them. Your heart will thank you, in more ways than one.

ith the baby New Year on its way, I wondered what small steps folks are taking to stay fit in the new year? Seems that big resolutions are so intimidating, they keep us from beginning what we swore we would begin when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st.

When I see people in good health, of all ages, I wonder just how they get that twinkle in their eye, that spring in their step?

Whether it is riding a horse or playing soccer, the New Year is waiting for you to find your sparkle, get your inner percolator perking, spring up your step. It doesn’t have to be a full-on commitment to juicing, Crossfit, swimming the English Channel or mountain climbing, but the Mix has aerial classes to lift your spirits, the YMCA has yoga classes to get you going in an easy way, Kentucky Indoors can enroll you in a soccer league, Calvary Baptist has a gym that only costs $10 a month, and that’s just a smattering of the opportunities to step away from the daily mundane routine and find how easy it is to feel better. As for me, I stand at my desk for the time I’m on phone calls, take the long way around the block if I’m walking, and I try to sing for at least an hour, every day. Enough about me, let’s talk about everyone else! I asked a few bluegrass personalities who seem to be the picture of good health to talk about the steps they take to well-ville.

Jane Beshear Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear embodies Kentucky’s unbridled spirit in her advocacy for horses and those who work in the equine industry. Her health and happiness shine at any occasion, whether she appears with Governor Beshear in the Winner’s Circle at the Kentucky Derby or is hosting the Annual Celebration of Hope Luncheon each May. She stays fit by doing what she likes best. “I’ve always been

active and love spending time outdoors.

By far, horseback riding is my favorite form of exercise AND it gives me the peace of mind I need after spending time working on my initiatives in Frankfort.” Mrs. Beshear is dedicated to addressing the rampant spread of breast cancer, which is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Kentucky. Her Horses and Hope initiative is increasing breast cancer awareness, education, screening and treatment referral among Kentucky’s horse industry workers and their families. To date, Horses and Hope has educated more than half a million horse show and race track fans, and has screened more than 400 equine workers. She adds, “I like to say that horses are the best personal trainers, therapists and confidantes in the world!

Riding is great exercise in itself but working in the barn - mucking stalls, carrying water buckets and hauling hay - are also a great workout. I prefer to ride every day, weather permitting, but I also love the flexibility and strength that yoga offers me. Of course, keeping up with my three grandchildren is a much-loved workout too!”

I have a regular workout routine...doing weights and cardio with a rowing machine are my preferred workouts. Every day when I can.” When he isn’t attending to the persistent needs of Lexington, Gray finds time to enjoy a read, saying, “And I try, too, to remember there’s always good therapy in a good book!”

Jim Gray Lexington Mayor Jim Gray finds the discipline of a rigorous routine perfect for his busy schedule. Gray can be seen walking to downtown appointments. His optimism and cheerfulness are uncontainable.

What’s his secret? He says his devotion to the gym grows from an impression gained in his youth. “I always remember that it was just one generation ago that my dad grew up on a farm in southern Kentucky, where he got a good workout all day long! That’s one good reason--fear and trembling!--that

How does she do it? “She says she considers fitness and wellness a huge part of her life, “and it’s something I love talking about and sharing with others.I believe a healthy lifestyle involves mind, body and soul! In my job, the mental stress many times outweighs the physical stress. For me hitting the gym at Body Structure each day is a must, I am there five days a week -- I run 3.1 miles every day, do 30 minutes on the elliptical and 10-15 minutes on the bike.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I also take an hour cardio/boot camp style class.

For me this is something I always budget into my day, for me it’s a stress reliever.

There is nothing like strapping on my tennis shoes, putting in the ear buds and getting lost on the treadmill! For the last two years I have been cycling as well, on Saturday mornings I take a class at CycleYou in Lexington. For me it’s like yoga on a bike. I get lost while pedaling away to the music.

Working out is something that makes me feel strong and beautiful, it’s not about losing weight or being a certain size. For me, hitting the gym is a ‘super’ hobby that allows me to de-stress while feeling like I can do anything!”

Philpott emphasizes that avoiding gluten

has also become a way of life. “Nutrition is a huge part of my life as well. I have Celiac Disease, and since being diagnosed in 2009, I have needed to completely change the way I eat. I was never a really bad eater, but I can tell you the cleaner I eat the better I feel, my workouts are so much better and even my sleep is better. I believe in healthy snacks through the day, for example I am conditioned to eat a cup of grapes and 2 rice cakes with peanut butter every day before news between 3 and 4!”

“In my job, our hours are certainly crazy.

I get off work right before midnight and while some people like to stay up all hours, I do not and require a lot of sleep. I am in bed most nights no later than 12:20, but I am also up most mornings by 7 heading to the gym. I think sleep is so important to the success of our day and our health in general, it’s something I never take for granted.

Finally, I think we have to exercise our mind and soul and feed them as well. I live my life constantly on the go so I try to take at least 10 minutes for myself. At night I don’t even turn on the TV. I read! Reading for me is what calms me down, lets my mind rest from the crazy day and gives me those few moments to myself to get lost in another world. Life is precious and God only gave us one vessel to live it in, so I believe in taking care of it to the max!”

I love swimming and I’ve found it to be perhaps the best exercise available to me when it comes to overall fitness; and one of the best things about it is, I can clear my head while I’m doing it, unlike running, when I would constantly be doing a mental inventory of my body, I can just find a rhythm and go.” He’s trying to form better habits, but temptations abound. “I’m trying to use the steps instead of the elevator; but I must admit, there’s something about an escalator that I just can’t seem to pass up!” he laughs.

Renfro Valley entertainer Wanda Barnett, is a quiet, talented and unassuming fiddler with the voice of an angel sings with a band of hilllbilly jazz outlaws called the Squirrels. Her nature is one that thrives on a peaceful existence. One look at her joyful face or one conversation with her reveals a lovely soul, inside and out. She clearly has achieved the careful work of balance in her life. Barnett considers her spirit to be the most important aspect of her health, “I believe that if you are healthy spiritually, it rains down and through all aspects of your life. You ‘glow’ from the inside out! Each day I make time for devotionals and scripture. If I don’t, I find I start relying on my own mind,

“Our three locations (with a fourth about to break ground in Hamburg), mean that no one in Fayette county is more than a few minutes from a Y.” and my own understanding. That’s not all bad, but without shoring yourself up spiritually, then the daily attacks and stresses not only start weighing you down and dictating your behavior and responses, they can also start defining who you feel you are.

Barnett thinks being eternally studious helps keep her mind sharp. “I’m an avid reader and curious person, always have been. I stayed up til 4am reading this morning. I think I would just die inside if I wasn’t learning something every day.” She’s also devoted to her one true love: music, music, music! “I’m learning about music every single day, via playing, singing, writing, teaching (50 students a week), and reading about musicians’ lives and music. Music history, instruments, other musicians. I don’t have a lot of time to practice because I play so much, but while I’m playing, which is about 7 hrs a day, I’m listening, and stretching and learning. I learn a lot at gigs. A friend of mine once said, ‘Always play with people who are better than you!’ He was right!”

“As for keeping her girlish figure, she offers a few baby step suggestions. “I walk and I move a lot. I park far away from the stores’ front door. I try to walk two miles a day, but I’m currently on hiatus, and that’s bad. I’ll do better. Mostly I watch what I eat, I always have. Very little processed food, no pork, very little red meat. Fish, chicken and whole foods (fruits and vegetables)...

ZERO corn syrup, no pop, just water and tea. Each morning during devotionals I’m drinking green tea, and decaf. I take supplements, I’ve done that since I was a teen; and I’ve tried to take care of my skin since then as well, I’m sort of fanatical about that.

Clean face at night. Good lotions and make up. Good shampoo. And SLEEP!! Because of the music, and my bad habit, I stay up too late, BUT, I get to sleep in because my work doesn’t start til 1:30 pm. I don’t weigh myself, I go by my jeans! If they’re tight, I cut back. I do have a bad habit of eating late at night, but, it’s most always good food, meaning fruits, veggies, brown rice, drinking water, juice and tea...pretty simple.

I know I only have so much to work with, what God gave me, but something in me has never let me give up on trying to look good, look my best. I just don’t give up, and I try to keep moving moving moving.

One thing I remember from a couple years ago was something Dr Phil said. He said something like ‘Don’t get rid of your clothes, don’t get ‘fat’ clothes! Well, for some reason that stuck, and my clothes of my ‘happy size’ are my meter. I stay very busy, teaching four days, playing gigs, playing in church, taking care of the house and dogs

(I love to push mow my big yard, it’s great exercise for me), and when I shop, I go long ways around aisles, and just walk all I can.

I just can’t and won’t give up on my health.

It’s a precious gift I can’t afford to take for granted. Lastly, I read a LOT about natural healing, herbs, vitamins, and try those things. I’m all for healing as opposed to medicating.”

Barnett also considers one last thing.

“I think it makes a huge difference. I have work that I love. I have a life that I feel, that I HOPE matters. I don’t feel like I’m just spinning my wheels. I try to be a giver, a lover of friends and family and people I meet, and in return, and am blessed with the most awesome community of friends and family, of music.”

AT THE YMCA Robert Parks Johnson

Local actor Robert Parks Johnson is a cancer survivor and works at the YMCA. He says getting healthy is all about taking baby steps.

ROBERT PARKS JOHNSON is a well known local actor who is a cancer survivor who works at the YMCA. Luckily, he shares his enthusiasm with his students at the YMCA. He agrees that baby steps are key to getting better in a well-rounded way.

Johnson emphasizes, “The Y takes a holistic approach.The Mind/Body/Spirit model has beenthe foundation of the Y’s vision of wellness since our creation in England in 1844 When we think of physical wellness, we need to remember a different triangle: Exercise; Nutrition; and Sleep.

Healthy sleep is essential to recovery and growth. Nutrition is also fundamental: I like to remind my classes that there is nothing they can do in the gym that can’t be undone in the kitchen, (or at the drive-through window.) And then there’s exercise. At the Y, we target the people we call “Health Seekers.” Some people would exercise if they had to lift concrete blocks in an unheated garage. Others wouldn’t get up off the couch if it was on fire.

“Health Seekers” are people who are not workout fanatics, but they are interested in becoming more healthy and fit. A lot of them are former exercisers. Many have tried and failed to build the habit, but just couldn’t get the fire started.

These “Health Seekers” are the population that the YMCA tries to serve. There are a couple of ways the YMCA of Central Kentucky tries to do that. First by making exercise available. Our three locations (with a fourth about to break ground in Hamburg), mean that no one in Fayette county is more than a few minutes from a Y. When you

visit those locations, you’ll find clean, safe, modern facilities for all kinds of activity, from ball fields and running trails to swimming pools, weight rooms, basketball gyms and racquetball courts.

When someone first comes to the Y, I encourage them to try a lot of different things. You can attend classes in yoga, water aerobics, and martial arts. You might rent a bike, or learn Zumba. The important thing is to find something you enjoy doing.

If you don’t like exercise, you won’t keep it up, no matter how many times you tell yourself that it’s good for you. Let your first baby steps be a search for a way of moving that makes you want to get up and move!

The second way we try to serve “Health Seekers” is to make exercise accessible.

Some people don’t want anything more than a locker, a shower, and a basketball goal, and the Y makes it easy for them to enjoy the workout that they choose. Other populations have more specific needs.

The Y has personal trainers and wellness specialists to help people who need a little extra instruction, guidance, or motivation.

We offer programs that are scientifically designed to meet the needs of seniors, cancer survivors, people struggling to fend off diabetes, and even those who are living with MS. Our facilities are equipped to assist people with walkers, canes and wheelchairs, whether they want to lift weights, shoot hoops, or take a dip in the pool. Child care with trained attendants is available at every Y, and of course our youth programs for team and individual sports have set the industry standard for over a century.

And finally, the YMCA has lots of ways to make membership affordable. There is never a contract associated with your membership at the Y. So you aren’t going to get stuck in a 12 or 36 month commitment if you try it out for a couple of months, then change your mind. All of our facilities and a wide variety of classes are included as part of your membership. You won’t have to pay extra to drop in on a Mat Pilates class, or bring a guest with you to show them what the Y is like. And finally, our Open Doors program offers deep discounts to the cost of membership to individuals andfamilies who need them. The Y does all we can to make sure that no one is ever turned away because of an inability to pay.

I love to tell the YMCA story. It really has changed my life for the better. I walked into the Y for the first time at age 51. The year before, in March of 2010, I weighed 397 pounds, hadn’t had a full time job for two years, and the doctors discovered a 6 centimeter tumor growing under my right tonsil. They told me I had a 50% chance of survival.

After a year of chemo, radiation, surgery, and struggling to walk to the bathroom without stopping to rest, I heard about a new program for cancer survivors called LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. The program offers a free 12 week membership to the Y, the guidance of a team of trainers, nutritionists, and group exercise instructors, and a chance to spend time with other survivors twice a week. I fell in love: with my classmates, my instructors, and with the YMCA.

Art is good medicine

A

rt has long been known as good for the soul, but studies show it’s good for the body too.

Lexington artist and gallerist Sandy Davis isn’t surprised to read the data that bears this out.

She says, “In the early 90s, a medical office in Boston displayed my pastels in their lobby to replace several old and faded posters.

A few months later, the office manager called to tell me my painting ‘Canadian Geese on Cape Cod’ sold! The buyer was a patient who was in getting his results from a medical test. He said my art helped calm him as he sat restlessly, anticipating the news. No matter the results, he said, he just had to have this piece and bought it before he saw the doctor.”

That experience was part of what inspired her to create her business, the Art Movement Gallery in Lexington. It’s not a brickand-mortar gallery, but rather a subscription service. Local businesses pay an annual subscription fee, and the Art Movement Gallery installs juried local art on the walls of that business. Customers can buy the art directly from those walls (and the business owners get to earn a commission while having their walls adorned by original art).

Health care is one of the most rapidly growing sectors of her business, and she said her experience at that doctor’s office “continues to motivate me in my mission to bring original work to the walls of local business. Art can create a calming and comfortable environment for both clients and employees, making an average experience an exceptional one.”

Davis herself will have her recent pastel series included in Lexington’s January 16 Gallery Hop at ArtsPlace, as part of the Daily Pastel Challenge Exhibit (three artists, thirty minutes a day).

r. Nick Kouns, a former Lexington Art League president and longtime advocate for arts in healthcare, has acquired several Lexington pieces on behalf of Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester, including “Gray’s Arch” by Guy Mendes, “The Community” by Isaac Powell, and “Things We Should Have Done But Couldn’t,” by Joseph Kuncinski. There is also a rotating exhibit of regional artists alongside the curated pieces.

He says, “The primary goal is to expedite the healing process through interaction with the artwork. The science of art in healthcare is definitive--art engagement makes people healthier. For example, studies show that regular artistic engagement slows the progression of Alzheimer’s dementia. Given that we have a long-term care facility physically attached to the hospital, the art is literally just around the corner from a host of elderly patients who carry a diagnosis of dementia.”

Artist Lennon Michalski has a piece featured in Clark’s collection, and has also had work commissioned by UK Healthcare. He was named one of the Hot 100 Southern Artists to watch by Oxford American Magazine (along with fellow Lexington artists Lina Tharsing and Phillip March Jones). Michalski says, “Art has an impact on the culture of a space. Art gives a sense of emotion and defines the space’s characteristics and its influence on the population. My artwork is meant to encourage hope and enjoyment.”

Of the piece for Clark, he says, “I wanted people to see the process of ‘fixing/healing’ of a living being. I want them to see an operation as a positive experience, relating to those in the hospital, showing how patients will be mended back to health.”

He says, “The UK Arts in Healthcare and Clark Regional Med Center have been a wonderful help for artists. More corporate involvement would truly strengthen the artist community. Any environment with bleak walls and vacant spaces hinders the mind and spirit.”

Michalski adds the exclamation point to the conversation of art’s role in the community, “Lexington needs to provide for the Arts like they do UK Basketball.”

1. Set realistic short-term goals. It’s advantageous to reach small goals each week, as opposed to a big goal each month.

3. Take advantage of technology. The availability of resources that can be personalized to your goals and lifestyle have never been higher. Find apps, online sources, and books that motivate your success to a healthy 2015.

4. Don’t dwell on the past. Everyone has tried and/or failed to make changes to their daily routine. Forming new habits can be difficult and takes time. If you haven’t had as much success as you’d like in the past, forget about, it’s a new year. You can do it.

5. Have fun! This is critical to enjoying the new challenges we embark upon each year, but often are overlooked. Enjoy your life, find the little things that make you smile, and just have fun.

Kentucky StartUp gives Gatorade a run for its money

E

very great corporate success story starts somewhere with a David and a Goliath, but how crazy would a startup have to be to go up against the likes of Powerade (owned by Coke) and Gatorade (owned by Pepsi)? Ask Kentucky’s own Sport Geeks, the guys who’ve brought SWORD to the competitive market of performance hydration.

Their response is simple, “We’ve worked very hard to create products that work, and we let the customers’ improved performance speak for us.”

The two agree “Lexington is a budding city for entrepreneurs. With organizations like LeXenomics, the Kentucky Small Business Development Center, and Awesome Inc., the future of entrepreneurship in Lexington is very bright.”

They acknowledge, “The world of sports drinks is dominated by two big companies, and sprinkled with smaller niche companies that make specialty products around the globe. We are certainly still one of those tiny companies here in Kentucky, but we have a much bigger appetite armed with a SWORD that we know outperforms the major players in the sports hydration beverage

category.”

There’s no celebrity spokesperson, no SWORD SuperBowl ad, no big name sponsors (not yet, anyway).

But stay tuned.

port Geeks got its start in 2012 in Barbourville, KY, founded by Dr. Scott Black, MD and Dr. Shawn Stasko, PhD. They are science guys (guys who can toss around terms like blood lactate threshold and cellular metabolism and know what they’re talking about).

Black has his MD from UK. He completed a family medicine residency, and later served as a team physician for athletic programs. He then completed a Master’s in Exercise Physiology, and then a fellowship in Sports Medicine.

Stasko has his PhD in Physiology and his BS in Sports Biology, and is a sports nutrition specialist.

They are both runners. Black’s interest is in ultramarathons and trail running. Stasko competes in endurance running.

The two are running partners and in 2012 they realized through a lot of conver-

sation that they share similar ideas about the current state of sports nutrition products and human performance services available to athletes.

They set out to answer the question they had for fellow athletes, “Why do YOU drink what you drink?”

That question led to the conception of SWORD. By 2013, multiple versions of the product were developed, tested, and produced in Louisville. In September, the first powder form of SWORD was produced in single packets and sold in specialized retail stores in Lexington.

By February of 2014, SWORD was produced in larger multi-serving containers, and by August it was produced in a readyto-drink bottled version. In September, a second flavor for SWORD was produced (berry) in single packet and multi-serving containers.

By the end of 2014, five versions of SWORD were available: single packet of powder (ginger citrus and berry), multi-serving containers of powder (ginger citrus and berry), and a ready-to-drink bottle (in ginger citrus).

Stasko says, “We create products and tools to improve human performance based on scientific research. We also write, review, and present educational information for athletes in the form of training articles, scientific papers, and lecture presentations.The Sport Geeks’ mission is to be the most trusted and transparent human performance company for athletes with the goal of safely improving human performance.”

A

nd to think, it all started in the kitchen.

“The early versions of SWORD were created in Scott’s kitchen. We spent numerous hours in the kitchen mixing ingredients that would be flying all over the kitchen, and I mean everywhere. We used common kitchen equipment like blenders, mixers, spoons, you name it; if it was in Scott’s kitchen, we probably used it, or tried to use it to make our first formulations of SWORD. Since then we have moved our production to a professional manufacturing facility where they have standard equipment and can handle our larger production

needs. Still, whenever we are in Scott’s kitchen, we laugh and reminisce about how we tried to use a particular tool or combination of ingredients to create SWORD.” They’ve come a long way.

Stasko says, “The toughest challenge as an entrepreneur is balancing the time dedicated to growing the business and time spent with the rest of the things in our lives.

Starting a new business can be somewhat of a ‘black hole’ where there’s no end to how much time, effort, and capital we can spend to achieve success. Having supportive family keeps us grounded and focused.”

hey describe “SWORD as the next generation of performance hydration. Containing only natural ingredients that are scientifically proven to improve human performance, SWORD is truly functional fuel for athletes.”

But some of their fans have been found not just in the running community, and come from far more surprising sectors.

“The most encouraging testimonial we’ve been given came from an athlete who opened our eyes to a completely new application for SWORD. Jon, a coal miner in West Virginia, works underground in small caverns, bent over crouching in high heat for 10 hours each day. His muscle cramps and roller coaster energy levels add additional challenges to an already physically taxing job. He battles dehydration and his muscle cramps with large amounts of water, sports drinks, and pickle juice concoctions.

Unfortunately he still experienced muscle cramping and dehydration. Jon was introduced to SWORD through a family friend and immediately put it to the test in the coal mines. After the first day of using it he was so pleased that he wrote to us and said, ‘This stuff works. I haven’t had any signs

of dehydration and muscle cramping since I’ve started using SWORD. I would bet my paycheck that this will satisfy any athlete out there!’”

port Geeks was recently awarded a DreamFuel grant by a local non-profit called LeXenomics.

“Their mission is to support great ideas forming in Lexington and in Kentucky with pilot funding, business guidance, and networking. LeXenomics wants to make it faster and easier for ideas and businesses to get off the ground to directly stimulate our economy and show the world why ideas in Kentucky are to be recognized.”

Sport Geeks “plans to use this gener-

ous funding to enhance our professional presentation at sporting events like races, fitness competitions, and sports games.

We’ve designed a unique method to dispense SWORD to our customers at these events. With the help from LeXenomics we will make it a reality in 2015.”

This funding helps with the challenges most entrepreneurs face at some point, though the SportGeeks founders have found supportive financial allies. “Of the many hurdles we’ve faced to get SWORD to its current state, one that really made us doubt the launch of SWORD was finding the proper funds. With each step in our formulation and production came more and more capital requirement. The difficult part

then compounds as the time and amount of work it takes in between each formulation stretches what funds you do have pretty thin. A breakthrough solution we found to our funding came by way of Forcht Bank in Lexington, KY [headquartered in Hamburg].

Their people believe in us and support our goals through and through. Their staff really has become an extension of our Sport Geeks family, as when we frequently visit, we’re welcomed like we’re just arriving home.”

The next step for SWORD is an ambitious one, “to expand our market reach to other regions and expand our product line to include more flavors in both powder and pre-made bottle form.”

Art students paint for hospitalized kids

C

hildren treated in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Kentucky Children’s Hospital are bombarded with scary sights, sounds and feelings.

“We use lots of scary things, and they go through scary procedures,” Emily Turner, a nurse in the PICU, said. “Usually they are very sick while they are here.”

But the welcoming grins of cartoon characters, a pleasant barnyard scene and sparkling princess carriages are happy and comforting images for children in the busy, intense PICU environment. Paintings of friendly childhood characters, figures and scenes adorn windows to seven patient rooms in the PICU. The colorful paintings provided by a group of UK art education students brighten the atmosphere for children and families going through a difficult time, as well as the nursing staff that cares for patients in critical situations.

“We just want it to be kid-friendly, appropriate, and to make them feel a little more joyous,” Turner said.

“The children are really sick, so even if one painting can make a child smile, then that makes a difference.”

The UK Art Education Student Chapter (AESC), a student organization that prepares its members for careers in art education, volunteered their time and artistic talents to paint child-friendly scenes and characters on the glass windows. The UK chapter is led by faculty adviser Beth Mosher Ettensohn.

Turner, a member of the Culture Council at Kentucky Children’s Hospital, and fellow nurses in the PICU took personal time to paint the windows last year. After convening with the Culture Council this summer, Turner reached out to students in the School of Art and Visual Studies requesting help with painting the PICU windows. The students started painting the

windows in November and will continue to maintain the paintings throughout 2015.

Contributing art to the PICU was especially meaningful to Ettensohn, whose son fought and survived a rare form of cancer in 1998. Ettensohn recalls long stays in intensive care units, both at Kentucky Children’s Hospital and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Ettensohn valued the support and encouragement of the KCH nursing staff who worked with her son.

“You could tell they were working as a team and every person cared about who they were treating,” Ettensohn said of the nurses. “They would take that extra step to help families manage the insanity that

comes with caregiving a critically ill child.”

As the family member of a patient, the art professor appreciated seeing vitality and variety in hospital décor. She believes a positive visual environment is essential to everyone’s health.

“What we see has a profound effect on what we do, how we feel, and who we are. An engaging visual environment is essential to our health,” Ettensohn said.

Ashley Worley, the vice president of the AESC, has noticed family members of

patients looking over her shoulder as she paints. She said painting one scene on a

window could take as long as two or three hours. Engaging future art educators in

community service is part of the AESC’s mission. Worley, who plans to become

an art teacher, feels gratified sharing her artwork with families and medical workers in a challenging and sometimes dreary environment.

“The children are really sick, so even if one painting can make a child smile, then that makes a difference,” Worley said.

‘Elvis is back’

Million Dollar Quartet comes to EKU Center for the Arts

A

t first glance, Million Dollar Quartet appears to be another touring impersonator/cover band concert, but nothing could be further than the truth. Rather, this recent Broadway smash musical brings to life one of the most mythical-yet-true jam session in the history of rock and roll.

Just before Christmas in 1956, Carl Perkins found himself in a bit of a post- “Blue Suede Shoes” funk. He booked a recording session with producer Sam Phillips and his band along with Jerry Lee Lewis and laid down some fresh tracks, one that included what would go on to become one of the best known Perkins songs, “Matchbox.”

What happened later that December afternoon has become the stuff of rock ‘n’ roll legend. But it really happened, and Million Dollar Quartet brings it all to life. It is like being a fly on the wall while pop culture history is being made.

At some point later that day, Perkins and Phillips were joined by a young upstart named Elvis Presley and another young man in black, Johnny Cash. The four broke into an impromptu jam session, and luckily, nobody bothered to turn off the recording equipment. A newspaper man who was there wrote, “This quartet could sell a million.” But they didn’t. Because that rare December day was the only time the four legends-to-be ever performed together.

Million Dollar Quartet turns that historic December day in 1956 into a rock ‘n’ roll time capsule. Some have referred to it as a cross between Mamma Mia! and Jersey Boys as a way of relating its story arc and “jukebox” musical qualities.

A recent tour stop in Boston prompted this response from The Boston Globe critic: “Yes, you’ve heard most of these songs a million times before, but the show reminds you why they became classics in the first place. Million Dollar Quartet turns out to be an unexpected treat and delivers on one of the promises that’s always been
