A NOTE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Many of us who follow interscholastic athletics become consumed by “March Madness” every spring as 132 men’s and women’s basketball teams compete for their respective national championships in a singleelimination tournament that culminates every year in early April. Both tournaments provide exhilarating drama each and every year and this year’s versions did not disappoint. Through all of the busted brackets and shining moments, it was a quotation from Kentucky men’s coach John Calipari that resonated with me as I reflected on our own successful winter season at Gill St. Bernard’s School. Calipari is a polarizing figure in the coaching profession and his methods are widely discussed and often disparaged. However, his words after his team’s Sweet Sixteen dismantling of West Virginia were profound: “I don’t want my team playing angry. I don’t want them to be mean, nasty, hateful. It’s not us against the world. It is play with joy and love of the game and love of each other. That wins every time.” These words reminded me of what I hope many GSB student-athletes glean from our athletics program. We’re incredibly proud of our school records and championship performances, but it’s the “love of the game and love of each other” that can make it such a transcendent experience. Congratulations to all of our winter athletes and thanks very much to all of you who represented each other and our school so well. Best of luck to the spring athletes, who will provide us with much pride and joy as we wind down another academic year.
