A NOTE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR While the GSB boys’ soccer team had another exemplary season, once again finishing in the “top 20” in the state, and girls’ soccer posted its fifth consecutive winning season and a visit to the Sectional finals, it was the girls’ tennis and cross country teams who raised the championship banners at Gill St. Bernard’s this fall.

Although these are two sports that often fly “under the radar,” the two programs have risen to an elite level at Gill over the last few years. Girls’ tennis is in the midst of a historic run, winning its third straight NJSIAA Non-Public B South Sectional championship and its fourth Raritan Division crown since joining the Skyland Conference in 2009. Individual accolades also abound for our tennis players, as every starter was named to at least one postseason all-star team.

In cross country, the boys followed up their 2013 Prep B title with the 2014 Skyland Conference Mountain Division crown after going undefeated through the dual meet season. And the girls were just as impressive, as one of only 20 schools in the state to qualify for the NJSIAA Meet of Champions. The GSB boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country teams have combined for five major championships in the last four years.

Not to be outdone, our Middle School’s fall teams (soccer, cross country and tennis) had a remarkable season as well, with a collective record of 46 wins and 21 losses.

Please join me in congratulating all of our fall student-athletes, not only for their prolific achievements, but also for the way they consistently represent our school with grace and class. Happy holidays from all of us in the GSB Athletic Department!

Varsity Girls’ Tennis Outshines the Competition This fall’s varsity girls’ tennis team swept all of its Skyland Conference opponents to capture a fourth consecutive Raritan Division crown. The girls also achieved a program best third place finish in the Somerset County Tournament and advanced to their third straight Non-Public B State Championship.

GSB began conference play with a 4-1 triumph over Bernards on September 8 and remained unbeaten (10-0) throughout regular season matches against division opponents Franklin, North Hunterdon, Voorhees and Rutgers Prep.

On September 18, the Somerset County Tournament opened at the Green Knoll Tennis Center in Bridgewater, N.J. Krishna Patel ’16, the number one seed in the first singles flight, played her way to the SCT crown on September 21. Second singles player Sharon Jin ’17 finished as runner-up to guide the team to third place overall. Additional points from Carolyn Najarian ’16 at third singles, Isabelle Demontigny ’15 and Lucille Dunn ’16 at first doubles, and Martine DiDomenico ’17 and Larisa Drzik ’17 at second doubles helped the program to its best-ever finish in the tournament.

On October 7, the top-seeded GSB Knights opened the NJSIAA Non-Public B South Sectional Tournament with a 5-0 shutout of Mater Dei Prep, and surged ahead to the championship round with a 4-1 semifinal victory over Rutgers Prep.

The girls triumphed 4-1 over Moorestown Friends in the finals, as Demontigny and Dunn secured the first doubles point, and DiDomenico combined with Drzik to earn a second doubles victory. Patel and Najarian triumphed in their singles matches as well to take the girls to their third straight NJSIAA NonPublic B South Sectional championship.

The girls concluded their season with the Prep B Championship on October 23 at the Garden State Tennis Center. Patel conquered the first singles flight, while Jin and Najarian took runner-up at second and third singles to guide the girls to a second place team finish. Devon Kaiser ’15 also made valuable contributions to the Knights’ historic season (14-2).

Varsity Cross Country Posts Another Successful Season The GSB cross country program had a season to remember, complete with milestone finishes at the team and individual level.

For the first time since joining the Skyland Conference in 2009, the varsity boys’ squad went undefeated (6-0) to clinch the Mountain Division Championship. The girls also earned impressive victories over Manville, Bound Brook and more to finish runner-up (5-1) in their division.

The Knights entered the championship season on a high note, after a fine showing at the Shore Coaches Invitational on October 4. The boys placed third in a field of 35 schools and the girls took sixth against 25 competing teams in the annual outing.

On October 15, GSB headed to the Somerset County Championships in Pleasant Valley Park. Patrik Jackson Ensley ’18.

Andersen ’15—a third place finisher in the Shore Coaches Invite—took gold (16:26) in a field of 96 runners to become Somerset County champion.

Jacob Kruger ’15 (18:38), Edward Fischer ’15 (19:15) and Michael Iannaconi ’16 (19:16) followed with strong finishes. The boys also saw solid performances from Stephen Hassett ’17, Paul Kruger ’16, Sebastian Pampalone ’16 and Samuel Zimmer ’16 in the JV race, and from Bobby D’Angelo ’18 (2nd), Ronald “Joe” Johnson ’18 (9th), Christopher “CJ” Licata ’18 (35th) and Jackson Ensley ’18 (40th) at the sub-varsity level.

Meanwhile, Nicole Johnson ’18 (22:13), Hope Fluet ’16 (22:29), Lillie Wilson ’16 (23:28) and Samantha Bittman ’17 (23:49) rounded-out the scoring.

Andersen conquered the field (16:21) at Blair Academy on October 29 to capture his third Prep B gold medal over the last four years.

Mathieu Petit ’17 also medaled with bronze (16:59), and J. Kruger (11th place/17:48), Iannaconi (13th/18:07), Samantha Bittman ’17.

D’Angelo (14th/18:11), Fischer (19th/18:32) and Johnson (24th/19:06) earned top 25 finishes to help the boys to second place overall.

The girls secured a runner-up team finish as well, behind medalist performances from Ensley (4th/20:38), Wilson (7th/21:20) and Fluet (10th/21:26). Johnson (13th/21:41) and Bittman (24th/22:47) also added valuable points.

The NJSIAA Non-Public B Group Championship was held in Holmdel Park on November 15. Ensley finished fifth (21:07) in a field of 112 runners to take the girls to third overall among 14 competing teams. Johnson (22:19), Wilson (22:22), Fluet (22:24) and Bittman (23:14) also claimed a spot within the race’s top 30 rankings to advance the girls to the prestigious Meet of Champions.

Throughout the season, Felix Andersen ’17, Landon Braemer ’17 and Ludi Zhu ’16 also earned points for GSB. In addition, Armani Comick ’15, Leo He ’17, Peter “Alec” Johnson ’15, Jacqueline Luberto ’16, William Metzler ’16, Gregory Niccolai ’16, Amechi Nwandu ’17, Jacqueline Roettger ’16, Michael Tafaro ’15, Isaac Zhang ’17 and Ken Zhang ’17 provided valuable contributions at training sessions and meets this fall.

Varsity Boys’ Soccer Takes on New Challenges Although the Knights graduated several top players last fall, the varsity boys’ soccer team recorded a phenomenal season (17-5-3) complete with impressive runs to the Somerset County Tournament and NJSIAA South Sectional championship games.

Goalkeeper Jordan Schreer ’15 notched nine shutouts in his first 12 games to help the boys earn a first round bye in the SCT. GSB advanced with a 2-1 victory over Ridge John “Jack” Lowe ’15. in the second round on October 11, as Cameron Miller ’17 opened the scoring and Armeen Mozaffari ’17 snapped a 1-1 draw shortly before halftime. In the quarterfinals on October 18, Tyler Kwaak ’16, Kevin Brito ’17 and Schreer chipped in with one goal apiece to defeat Bridgewater-Raritan, 3-1. The Knights faced top-seeded Montgomery in the semifinals on October 25. Brito assisted on a Steven Bednarsky ’17 goal in the first half and later converted a pass from Miller to give GSB a 2-0 lead, but the Cougars tied the game with two goals of their own to force two scoreless overtime periods and a penalty kick shootout. Maxwell Aunger ’17, Brito, Kwaak, Anes Mrkulic ’17 and Schreer each converted

penalty kicks to advance Gill to the SCT championship against Pingry, where they lost the hard-fought contest.

GSB advanced in the Prep B Tournament with a 1-0 quarterfinal win over Rutgers Prep on October 23. Kwaak scored off a pass from Mozaffari during the second overtime, and the back line of Aunger, Luke Fischer ’16, Andres Gonzalez ’17, Miller and Nicolas Ricciardi ’16 helped Schreer post his 11th shutout of the season.

A three-time defending NJSIAA Non-Public B South champion, the varsity boys’ soccer team headed to its fourth straight Sectional final on November 13. Bednarsky, Kwaak, and Daniel Sivolella ’16 scored off assists from Miller and Dylan Blackman ’16 to lead the boys to a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Calvary Christian on November 6. Meanwhile, Bednarsky converted a pass from Brito to snap a 2-2 tie and defeat Wardlaw-Hartridge in the semifinal round on November 10. Once again, the Knights faced Pingry in the championship—this time falling 3-2 on a last-minute goal in double overtime.

Although plagued by injury for a majority of the fall, co-captain John “Jack” Lowe ’15 offered sound leadership and advice to younger teammates like Andrew Amaro ’18, Nathaniel Benoit ’16, Nicholas Cooper ’17, Aaron Hinton ’16, Devin Hohman ’17, Charles Kasman ’16, Bruce Li ’16, Alexander Roch ’18, Alexander Schachne ’18 and Alexander Showell ’16. Both he and Schreer hope to continue their soccer careers at the collegiate level next year.

JV Girls’ Tennis Team Steps it Up at Doubles The JV girls’ tennis team shined again this fall, earning a winning season with nine triumphs and eight losses.

Sophomores Genevieve Fischer and Katherine Duggan led the way with 15 victories at first doubles. The second doubles duo of Carleigh Matthews ’17 and Sophie Parker ’18 also won 15 of Gill’s 17 matches played. Catarina “Caty” Matthews ’16 posted an impressive winning percentage on the court as well.

Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team Reaches Sectional Final Gill’s 2014 varsity girls’ soccer team stormed out of the gate, earning back-to-back wins during its first week of regular season play, and continued all the way to the Non-Public B South Sectional final on November 13.

Down 2-1 to Rutgers Prep in their fall opener on September 6, Ava Diggins ’18 converted off a pass from Elizabeth Todd ’15 to even the score, and Samantha Delehanty ’16 fed the ball to Erica Phiansunthon ’17 for the game-winning goal. That same week, Jane O’Connor ’16 scored an unassisted goal to help the Knights improve to 2-0 with a shutout over South Hunterdon.

GSB fell to a number of tough opponents, including Kent Place, North Plainfield and Blair Academy, before lighting it up with six goals against Bound Brook on September 23. Mikaela Gegelys ’17 led the girls with two goals in the triumph. Kaila Gong ’15, Amelia “Mia” Kirby ’18, O’Connor and Todd also added one goal apiece, Renee Turner ’16 chipped in with two assists, and Alyx Schrecengost ’15 made four saves in the net.

Knights advanced to face third-seeded Timothy Christian in the quarterfinal round. O’Connor scored off a pass from Todd to seal the 1-0 upset win. Gill then secured a 1-0 semifinal victory against Mater Dei Prep to give goalkeeper Schrecengost her sixth shutout. For the first time since 2007, the girls headed to the Sectional Championship, but fell to Moorestown Friends to finish 12-10 on the season.

Four seniors—Gong, Brianne Hanafin ’15, Schrecengost and Todd—will graduate from the GSB girls’ soccer program this year, leaving the team to rely on younger athletes including Samantha DeRing ’16, Melissa Jean ’17, Sabrina Marques ’17, Ashley Maldonado ’17, Olivia Wilson ’17, Grace Beveridge ’18, Alexandria Delehanty ’18, Nour Marzouk ’18 and Catherine Quan-Shau ’18 to help build on this season’s success.

Postseason play began with the SCT on September 26.

Down by two against Mount St. Mary’s, Todd converted a pass from Jennifer Lowe ’17, but the Knights were unable to capitalize on additional scoring opportunities down the stretch. After falling to Oak Knoll at Gill’s annual Homecoming/Family Day, the girls swept past Manville, Ranney, South Hunterdon and division leader Belvidere.

With help from defenders Colette Bilynsky ’16, Emma Dean ’17, Diggins, Amanda Lazar ’18 and Lowe, Schrecengost secured her third shutout of the season in Gill’s 2-0 victory over South Hunterdon on October 7. Diggins and Todd each scored a goal, while Turner chipped in with an assist.

The girls concluded their regular season with victories over Bound Brook and Manville. Lauren Renna ’17 had one goal and one assist, Kirby added one goal and Todd chipped in with an assist to give Gill the 2-1 Skyland Conference win over Bound Brook on October 21.​ Meanwhile, both Renna and O’Connor scored one goal apiece to defeat Manville, 2-0.

JV Boys’ Soccer Foreshadows Strong Future for Varsity Program The JV boys’ soccer team notched six wins, including victories over Newark Academy, Immaculata and Warren Hills to finish 6-8-1 on the season.

Sophomore Nicholas Cooper scored 16 goals, while Andrew Amaro ’18 proved instrumental in creating solid plays for the Knights and scored six goals in his rookie season. Goalkeeper Alexander Roch ’18 secured the first shutout of his career in a 5-0 win over Delaware Valley in late September. JV Girls’ Soccer Makes Midseason Comeback After some early season inconsistency, the JV girls’ soccer team rebounded with two wins and one draw in its final three contests of the fall.

Already soaring on back-to-back victories over Manville and Kent Place, on October 24 the girls avenged an early season loss to North Plainfield. GSB saw solid efforts from goalkeeper Melissa Jean ’17, midfielders

Ashley Maldonado ’17 and Olivia Wilson ’17, and defenders Grace Beveridge ’18 and Alexandria Delehanty ’18 in the 1-1 equalizer. Meanwhile, Catherine Quan-Shau ’18 served as a valuable member of the team throughout the season and will look to make a strong impact next year at the varsity level.

Three New Members Join Booster Club Executive Committee The Gill St. Bernard’s Athletic Booster Club welcomed three new members to the Executive Committee for the 2014-15 school year.

Cheryl Lowe P ’15, ’17 will fulfill the role of concessions manager during the 2014-15 athletic year. Lowe and her husband David first joined Gill St. Bernard’s School with their son Jack ’15 in 2011. Soon after, their daughter Jennifer ’17 followed as an Upper School student. When not cheering her two three-sport children on from the stands during GSB soccer, ice hockey, golf and lacrosse contests, Lowe has devoted much of her time to assisting in the Cox Field Lodge. “I’ve enjoyed working in the Lodge; being able to interact with the other kids on campus and meeting new parents,” said Lowe. “When asked to step up to help organize the Lodge this Cheryl Lowe P ’15, ’17. year, I was more than happy to help.”

Lowe is also a member of the Parents-Admission Network at Gill. In addition to running her own business, ControlTemp Thermostats, she has been a volunteer with the Parsippany Soccer Club over the past nine years, chair of the Parsippany Municipal Alliance Committee, a member of her daughter Samantha’s middle school Parent Teacher Association in the family’s hometown, Parsippany, N.J., and a participant and mentor for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Team In Training” program.

A parent at Gill since 2006, Liz Reid P ’18, ’21 is certainly no stranger to the GSB community. Over the years, she has assisted with Homecoming/Family Day, helped during the Parents’ Association’s annual Fashion Event, and served as a Middle School Room Parent to her two daughters, Lauren ’18 and Leigh ’21.

Both girls participate on dance teams and in equestrian competitions outside of Gill, and have contributed to several GSB programs—including cross country, soccer, lacrosse, basketball and track—while in Middle School. “One of the great aspects of the GSB Middle School is that all students are given the opportunity to try a sport they may not have tried in the past, and actually get to participate on a team. Having those opportunities during school time has been a great way to Liz Reid P ’18, ’21. expose our daughters to trying new things and being a part of the GSB community,” said Reid.

When her eldest entered the world of high school sports this past fall, Reid saw no better time to join the Athletic Booster Club Executive Committee. When not cheering on the sidelines with her husband Bruce at varsity track and field events and Middle School soccer games, she looks forward to helping in the Cox Field Lodge and anywhere else necessary.

Stephen Tafaro P ’15, a frequent spectator at GSB sporting events, is one of Gill’s newest members of the Athletic Booster Club Executive Committee. His son, Michael ’15, enrolled at Gill St. Bernard’s School in 2004. Now a senior, he serves as co-captain of the varsity boys’ cross country team and throws javelin and shot put for the Knights in the winter and spring. “I attend as many of Mike’s athletic events as possible, as well as other teams’ games, in all seasons,” said Tafaro, also an active member of the GSB Parents-Admission Network.

Tafaro holds a J.D. from Albany Law School, Union University, and Stephen Tafaro P ’15. a B.A. from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. He retired in 2002, after running his own medical malpractice firm for 10 years. During that time, he was also a trustee on the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey board and president of the New Jersey chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Tafaro currently lives in Bedminster, N.J.

Middle School XC Crosses Out the Competition Forty-three fifth through eighth grade student-athletes ran for the Middle School cross country program this fall.

The team competed in five regular season races— including three tri meets— against opponents from Far Hills, Newark Academy, Rutgers Prep and more. In their final regular season meet on October 24, the boys swept MorristownBeard and Trivium Academy to finish the season undefeated (8-0). The girls also swept the tri meet to close the year on top (7-1).

Middle School Tennis Squads Show Improvement

Middle School’s Coed Soccer Team Records Milestone Season

The Middle School tennis program was divided into two separate squads—a 5/6 and a 7/8. Both consisted of a talented group of girls, who improved drastically during practices and at games. Andree Aloise ’19 served as the top player this fall, earning solid wins over opponents such as Princeton Day with her fellow partner Ella Baker ’21. In all, the girls finished 9-3 on the season, also triumphing over Rutgers Prep, Newark Academy and MorristownBeard. Each participant showed great promise and will be looked upon to drive the varsity program forward in the future.

GSB’s 5/6 Middle School soccer team finished 5-2-1 overall, its best record in recent years.

The 37-member coed team faced opponents from Far Hills, Far Brook, Oak Knoll and Peck. Perhaps the biggest accomplishment of the fall occurred on October 9 and 28, when Gill St. Bernard’s swept the Peck School, one of its largest rivals.

As these young athletes continue to grow, they will play instrumental roles on Gill’s seventh and eighth grade soccer teams.

7/8 Boys’ Soccer Team has Season for the Ages The 7/8 boys’ soccer team finished its season 10-5, with the most wins of any team in the program over the past five years.

For the first time since 2010, the boys achieved major upset victories over prep rivals Pingry and Newark Academy. Keeping with tradition, the team also won, 6-0, against Rutgers Prep at Homecoming/Family Day. The season ended with an epic overtime penalty kick loss to an undefeated Peck squad during the semifinal round of the Greater Morris County Tournament.

Andrew Moglianesi ’19 led the team with 18 goals this season. Tyler Merna ’19 and Lucas Horn ’19 masterfully controlled the midfield, as each finished with six goals and five assists. Newcomer Seth Gelwarg ’19 found the back of the net three times and added four assists. Goalie Mitch Fishbein ’19 recorded six shutouts, and William Goldmark ’19 combined with McCall Sulton for Gill’s seventh. The back line was controlled by Alexy, Mark Lewis ’19, Brian Mueller ’19, John “AJ” Witte ’19 and Lucas Zuanic ’20. The future looks bright for GSB soccer, as 19 eighth grade boys look to join the high school program next year!

Middle School Girls’ Soccer Demonstrates All-Around Team Effort GSB dropped its first two games of the season to Rockaway and Bernardsville before bouncing back with a 2-1 victory over Central Middle School on September 22. Top offensive players Emily Raia ’20 and Catelyn Woelfle ’19 scored one goal apiece to give the Knights their first win of the year.

The girls saw another shot at success on September 30, when they handily defeated Newark Academy 4-1 at home. Teresa Zimmer ’20 led the way with two goals.

Kajal Mehta ’19 and Raia also added one goal each in the defeat against the Minutemen. On October 2, Woelfle posted the lone goal in Gill’s shutout over Warren Hills.

Throughout the fall, the girls were led by alternating goalies Tamia Chaney ’20, Zimmer and Rebecca Michaels ’20—and by sweeper Ansley Hopton ’19—on defense. Nina Carrar ’20 and Courtney Hanks ’19 also played tenaciously on the GSB defensive line. Midfielders Logan Stetz ’20 and Cindy Padilla ’20 each offered valuable support on offense, as did Susanne Mundt ’19 before sustaining an injury around midseason.

Carolyn Herrlin ’19 provided outstanding leadership to several younger players including Hayley Armstrong, Anneliese Gattoni, Isabel Orazietti and Caroline Solondz from the Class of 2021 as well as fifth grader Jamie Maus. They earned valuable experience and will provide consistent contributions in the years ahead.
