Kyra Quinn who is in charge of the Beerwah Bulldogs first aid said with over 21 teams and 400 members, aged between five and 45, keeping up with the supplies of first aid equipment was a real challenge. She said people don’t always think about how important first aid supplies and equipment are until they or a member of the family sustain an injury. “It can be a really stressful time when a player is injured, particularly a junior player who can have their parents and siblings watching from the side lines, and then you need to stay calm and reassure both the player and their family members,” she said. “It is a huge responsibility for the FAOs who are the first responders on the field, we don’t have x-ray machines or ultra sounds to see what is going on. “So it is our duty to take every precaution to ensure a good outcome for the player, which is why the first aid equipment is so important, it is expensive to purchase and while we need to have it on hand, we would prefer not to have to use it,” Kyra said. Kyra’s equipment ‘wish list’ includes a defibrillation machine costing $2,250.00, three splint kits valued at $395.00, airway intervention kits $450.00, H2O bottles at $130.00, stretchers that are safety compliant $617.00, and five fully stocked field bags x $130.00. So Kyra decided instead of complaining that they could always do with more equipment, she’d come up with a solution that the club would hold

Kyra strapping under 11 player Harrison Mens a community garage sale to raise some much needed funds. Kyra said the NRL states that they must have First Aid Officers (FAO) for each team as well as a Level 2 FAO within the club who is trained to administer advanced CRP and airway intervention. Kyra is the Level 2 FAO. Kyra said all of their FAO are volunteers and they train and work hard in their roles. They just put their heads down and work hard to protect and care about our players to the best of their abilities, she said. Kyra said they are really hoping that the community will come along and support them on the day. Even if you just come along and grab some brunch or lunch, we think you might be surprised at just how good the food in our canteen is, well worth coming along for, she said. We have organised the event for this Sunday, August 14 from 8.00am – 1.00pm at the Beerwah Sports Grounds with sites still available for just a $15.00 booking fee. Kyra reckons she will be happy if the funds raised can assist the club in purchasing a splint kit. For more information on site bookings please contact Kyra on 5439 0552 or 0419 020 601.
