STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Diana Vreeland spoke the best lines. “You gotta have style,” she once said, “It helps you get down the stairs. It helps you get up in the morning. It’s a way of life. Without it, you’re nobody. I’m not talking about lots of clothes.” Vreeland, herself, embodied this notion of making oneself fabulous. While not particularly pretty nor comfortable about her looks, Vreeland, whose own mother cruelly called her an ugly duckling, and perhaps fueled by this horrific treatment, morphed into the most stylish woman of her time — of all time. Her tenures helming both Harper’s Bazaar (1936–1962) and VOGUE (1963–1971) set the table for defining fashion’s zeitgeist. Diana found beauty in the unexpected and pushed her agenda: Be anything but boring! Possess some pizzazz! She worked with and pushed photographers like Richard Avedon and with unlikely models like Edie Sedgwick, Penelope, and Lauren Hutton. Taking a page from Diana’s ethos, GENLUX believes in giving a platform to passionate up-and-coming photographers, stylists, models, makeup artists, hairstylists, designers, and actors — particularly those with flair. Take talented hairstylist Robert Steinken. With ample parts passion and pizzazz, he heeded Diana’s call and reinvented himself as a photographer, and a good one at that. His superb photos of our cover model and actress Daniella Pineda (p64) and models Leanna Burgos (p72) and Milena Ilina (p44) — thanks in large part to the girls’ sense of adventurousness — are anything but boring. We also have first-time GENLUX shooters in Marina Ray (p16), Ron Beaver (p28), and Patrick Curtet (p52). Marina’s in-your-face shots of gap-toothed beauty Amy B. are thought-provokingly beautiful; meanwhile, Ron’s stunning jewelry-focused images bring us back to a time in fashion photography when famed beauty photographers like Irving Penn and Hiro truly understood their craft and the nuances of lighting. Let’s not leave out model-turned-fashion photographer Holly Parker (p22, p38) The New York-based shooter invariably brings us brilliant location stories, and, here, she delivers two shining examples. “There’s only one very good life,” Vreeland said, “and that’s the life you know you want and you make it yourself.” Are you ready to reinvent yourself ?

DANIELLA RATES HERSELF ON A SCALE FROM 1 TO 10 Competitive:

I’m very competitive with myself. I’m going to go with a 9.

Affectionate:

Definitely an 11 Driven: 11 Fashionable: 5 Forgiving: 8. I’m incredibly forgiving, but I don’t forget. Critical: I’ve always been hard on myself. I’d say I’m a very critical person. So I’ll go with an 8. Romantic : I’m an 11. I’m really cheesy. I like doing things for my significant other. Part of the joy of being on this earth is being romantic. If you’re not romantic, it makes the world less fun.

D

aniella Pineda takes her mantra very seriously: Whatever you’re doing, even if it’s going to the DMV, make it fun! The actress, who stars in the summer blockbuster Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, steps out of hair and makeup at our Genlux shoot and announces she’d like to do the first look topless. While usually, it’s the photographer who instigates such adventurous behavior, Daniella is one strong-minded badass, clearly in control of her own destiny. Here, the California-born Mexican-American beauty tackles our GENLUX Two-Word Questionnaire.

Your GPS? I’m in New York at a nice quiet corner cafe. You’re wearing? A jean skirt from Mauricia, a pair of Gucci sunnies, a vintage Eagles tour shirt from 1977 and a pair of black sparkly flip-flops. You’re skincare? Ulta MD. I’m psycho about sunscreen. You’ll never see me laying out in the sun—that’s not my bag. I love anything that’s got vitamin C. I love Skinceuticals. Honestly, any 10% glycolic pads. I use them every other day. Favorite drink? I stopped drinking at around 27, and it took years off my face. It made a world of difference. I’ve got that gene that makes it hard for me to process alcohol. I drink a lot of water. And I love coffee. Your dream? I’ve always dreamt of doing really interesting work and being successful. I try to be prepared to seize opportunities. I know there will be a lot of mistakes along the way. Saftey net? I’ve had a lot of adults who dropped the ball when I was young. I didn’t grow up with my biological parents. For whatever reason, my biological parents were not fit or ready to raise me, so that’s not how it worked out for me. I grew up with aunts and uncles. Call it divinity or chance—my parents were different people. I basically learned to rely on myself—I can’t rely on anyone else. DNA change? If I could change anything it would be to not be lazy—and that’s hard for me. I love to do absolutely nothing. Now that I’m getting older I need to take care of a lot of people. Best advice? My Uncle Arnold who is like a father to me had two pieces of advice, ‘Always get to the front of the line, and don’t take shit from anybody.’

[Speaking of not taking shit from anybody, as Daniella was on the phone for this interview she paused and said, “Someone just blew me a kiss and whispered an obscenity to me.” Then, while still on the phone, she went after the culprit saying, “Did you just blow a kiss? Wait, hang on. Is that your boss.” Then, the phone went dead. She called back. “Sorry, I’m dealing with these fucking idiots. I was yelling at this man. It’s something that women have to deal with—a bunch of idiots all the time. And I’m not afraid to yell at them.”] First job? I grew up in and around Oakland, and my first job was working in a salsa factory. Early education? I went to not-so-great schools and a really nice school. I was a poor kid who got to go on some great trips to Italy and Germany with my aunt. My childhood was very sad, but also very beautiful at the same time. Bullying experiences? Oh, yeah, of course, but if someone was bullying me, that wasn’t going to happen—so I got into a lot of fights. I got thrown off school teams for fighting. If someone was being unfair, I wasn’t afraid to stand up for myself. Best trait? My friends would probably say I’m very goofy and that I don’t take myself too seriously and that I care deeply about what I do. Three blessings? My health. My family. God gave me some intelligence, and I’m thankful for that. Best feature? My best physical feature is my gap teeth. Sometimes I think it’s cool and other times I think it makes me look crazy. When I was young, I just wanted it closed, so I closed it with braces. Luckily it broke, and it went back. Oh, and my feet. I give myself a 10 on the feet. Oh, and my

hair! My grandpa is 94 and still has a head full of thick silver hair. I won the jackpot on hair. Racism stories? Yes, I have some. Everyone in the world has had a racialized experience. I went to a predominately white school. You could tell it was something the students were picking up at home. I’ve experienced a combo of not being American enough, and not being Mexican enough. Trump advice? Oh, God. I can’t suggest advice for what he has. That’s a way too long an answer. I don’t think he’s going to take advice from anything or anyone. Where to start? Your hero? Creatively, director Jordan Peele for his work in the horror film genre. As far as how to be, my Uncle Arnold. Latest movie? I just saw the Mr. Rogers movie. I was crying my eyes out. He was such a good person. This documentary shows there are people out there who are, and preach, love. First heartbreak? It happened as a kid. The worst heartbreaks of my life came growing up. I’m good now. Everything happens for a reason. Biggest worry? I worry about getting a staph infection. That freaks me out. Also, the irreparable damage we’ve done to our environment has me worried and I’m worried for all the young people who are growing up in this world of hate. Favorite charity? The World Wildlife Fund. Also, there’s a wonderful organization in Texas that is helping bridge parents with their children. What’s next? I’ve got some projects in the works. I’m shooting M o d e r n Pe rs u a s i o n in New York, it’s a rom-com movie, and I’m writing a horror script.

VICTORIA GRANT

It has been nonstop this summer. I have been dashing around Europe starting off with the Ascot Races where I wore a Dolce and Gabbana embroidered dress with a white collar and hat from Victoria Grant. To Elton John’s glam Aids Charity Ball in Windsor, I sported a Valentino net dress, a frock coat from Saint Laurent and a top hat from Victoria Grant. Next up, to shed a little weight, it was off to Austria where I wore lederhosen and dirndls to the very glamorous Viva Mayr resort in Althausee. Sadly, I only lost five pounds. I left the green and quiet hills of Austria for the Ischia Film Festival put on by Pascal Vicedomini. Everyone, it seemed, was wearing flowers this summer, but I kept to my usual black and with a touch of colour. I am not convinced about wearing flowers on the bottom unless, of course, you are skinny. I’m also fond this season of the beautiful coats by Debbie Von Bismarck in electric blue, silver, and shocking pink. JEAN PAUL GAUTHIER FW18

Next up was Venice for the film festival where the ravishing Lady Gaga (Star is Born) floated down the red carpet wearing a breathtaking Valentino dress of pink feathers. I’m such a fan.

AZZARO FW18

This season, I suggest you accessorize your CHANEL, McQueen, Gauthier, or kilt rom Versace with a neon handbag from Prada. Also, you must try Kat Von D’s fabulous makeup. Kat has just married and is having a baby with my favourite singer, Prayers. So much more, but you, my dear, must go and do some shopping!

Detective Doctor

Dr. Laura Fletcher is the Sherlock Holmes of infertility. She sleuths through her patient’s lives searching for unseen factors impeding their desire to conceive. 6.1 million women in the United States struggle with infertility issues, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Though there are a wide variety of reasons for infertility—in women and men—environmental factors can be key. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get a sort of medical detective on the case to help you figure out the source of your infertility issues? Meet Dr. Laura Fletcher. She visits her client’s homes and offices to test for a wide variety of chemical and metal toxins (such as pesticides or air and water pollutants) that could be contributing to her clients’ health issues. “Doing detective work allows a person to focus in on where to take action, Fletcher explains, “so that the health challenges can start to fade away.” The first visit takes place in the home, where Fletcher takes multiple blood and urine samples

from her client, then sends these samples off to private labs. She also looks for stealth infections in the digestive tract and takes a hard look at her clients’ nutrition. She even examines their household and personal care products, like how a detective would pore over evidence. And like any good investigator, Fletcher believes in the powers of deductive reasoning: by removing these roadblocks and unburdening the body, she’s confident in the restoration of health and fertility. This unusual approach to medicine happened when Fletcher herself became ill and was determined to dive deeper into underlying causes that spurned her health issues. Having come out the other side, she now believes her life purpose is to help her clients in the same way she helped herself. For more information contact Dr. Laura Fletcher by email: doctor@toxcheck.com

Head’s Up

Japan brings us yet another go-to beauty treatment. This one feeds your head.

86 GENLUX SUMMER/PRE-FALL 2018

When partners Sayaka Lee and Keiko Uehara opened Blow Me Away hair salon in LA, they brought with them a popular Head Spa treatment from their native Japan. The pair has been overjoyed by how wildly popular it’s become here. First, the experience is fabulously soothing and relaxing (good luck not falling asleep). The 30-, 45-, or 60-minute treatment includes a scalp analysis, aromatherapy, micromist steam to open pores, massage, shampoo, and a rebuilding hair mask. The treatment is designed to deep clean, detox, massage, and stimulate circulation. You have the option of following your treatment with their Blow Me Away signature blow-dry. The hair health benefits address challenges like dry, itchy, or oily scalp, clogged follicles, irritation, thin hair, and hair loss. The company uses only organic products and bespoke treatment techniques befitting your scalp and hair. The Blow Me Away website offers a good analogy: “Like plants in fertile soil, our hair’s health depends on how well we take care of our scalps.” Hear, hair. VIEW

For more than 22 years (15 in microblading), brow phenom Cindy Choe has perfected the arches of busy moms to boardroom bosses to those both in front of and behind Hollywood’s cameras. Her new studio in Beverly Hills (cindychoestudio.com) is a smart, grey and white monochromatic studio/academy, where she takes permanent makeup into a glamorous fine art. She’s framed the faces of actresses like Alice Evans (The Originals, Vampire Diaries), as well as, celebrity wedding planner Kevin Lee (yes, “guy brows” are a thing, too!). Here, Cindy cheerfully takes on our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire. Describe yourself? I’m curious, eager, experimental, receptive, and patient. I’m always curious and eager to learn new things. I’m experimental because I like to know first-hand the cause and effect. To learn, I have to be receptive and open-minded, and all answers eventually reveal themselves with time and patience. Your breakfast? Cream cheese bagel. Three blessings? My family, my health, and my passion. Your passion? My work. I love helping people look their best; it’s an enriching experience. I love helping my clients achieve beautiful makeup enhancements that will improve their self-esteem. Guilty pleasure? Eating. I love to try new restaurants and food. I think that’s just one of the universal joys of life. Happiest moment? When my sons were born. I have two sons, so I have to say that each birth was equally the happiest.

Memorable getaway? This one trip to Cancun when the Monsoon caught up with us while we were out sightseeing in a golf car. Favorite quote? One by Helen Keller. “When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” Embarrassing moment? When I first arrived in the US from Korea, I went to watch Good Will Hunting with a couple of classmates. After watching the movie, I was asked, “What was the best part of the movie and explain why?” I was very embarrassed since my English was very limited and I couldn’t express my thoughts. Best trait? My friends might say I’m a great listener. I usually get people’s life stories out of them. Next obstacle? I would love to speak English fluently. Life challenge? Trying to please every client

Fashion style? Modern with a hint of avant-garde. Two of my favorite designers are Stella McCartney and Pedro Garcia.

Favorite charity? One of my favorite charities is StandUp for Kids. The goal of the charity is to end the cycle of youth homelessness.

Your heroes? My mother and father—they are the ones that inspire me to be the best I can be.

2023 goal? In five years, I hope to spend more time teaching the next generation of microbladers.

Superhero power? I hope that my superhero power is making people happy.

Next life? If I can live this life as fully as possible, I don’t need another.
