Frankston eighth for animal cruelty FRANKSTON ranked eighth of Victoria’s 79 local council areas for animal cruelty, according to a list of hotspots released by RSPCA Victoria. Of the 11,840 cruelty reports across the state in 2015-16, 366 were involved the welfare of animals on the peninsula. RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker said that geographic analysis of cruelty reporting data will support efforts to focus on the areas that need it most. “Our vision is ending cruelty to all animals – and we know that prevention is the key to ending cruelty,” she said. “Over the next 12 months we will be using this data to help identify areas that would benefit most from community education and support.” Welfare concerns for dogs, cats and horses continued to make up most issues reported to the RSPCA. Of the 359 reorts received in Frankston, 218 related to dogs and 11 to puppies); 61 related to cats and 14 to kittens and19 to horses. The remainder related to other animals. Of the issues reported on the peninsula 105 related to hygiene, grooming and housing conditions; 79 concerned underweight animals; 78 involved sick and injured animals not receiving vet treatment; 51 concerned animals with insufficient food, 71 with insufficient water and 52 with insufficient shelter; 64 concerned abandoned animals, and 40 were about animals being beaten or wounded. “Even one cruelty issue is one too many, yet the number of reports we

RALPH the lamb is back. Defying “million-to-one odds” the black-faced lamb made it home to the Big Goose children’s farm in Moorooduc on Friday morning, much to the relief of owner Justin Orr. The five-week-old bottle-fed lamb survived 13 nights out in the wild after disappearing from the MorningtonTyabb Rd animal park, overnight Sunday 21 August. An overjoyed Mr Orr, left, said Ralph ran up to road workers putting up road signs in Tyabb about seven kilometres from where he was allegedly dumped by thieves. They recognised him from media reports and contacted the farm. The lamb has distinctive markings with a black face and ears and round black spot on his right cloven hoof. “I wouldn’t have put much money on him surviving,” Mr Orr admitted. “But he’s looking pretty good and we are bottle feeding him small amounts of milk to get him back to normal. We will get him to the vet this afternoon.” Detectives on Wednesday arrested a 21-year-old Moorooduc man and charged him with theft, handling stolen goods and animal cruelty. He will appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 4 November. A Cranbourne man, 25, and Tyabb man, 21, were also arrested but have been released pending further inquiries. Ralph was named following a competition run by the park. Detectives had been told Ralph was dumped in a paddock on the Mornington-Tyabb Rd, near the intersection of Coolart Rd, Moorooduc. His return was described as a “miracle” by Detective Senior Sergeant Miro Majstorovic. Stephen Taylor
