Welcome toSummer

WWelcome to summer golf in North Texas. The temperatures may be warming up, but we do not expect to see our Membership’s golf activity cooling down anytime soon. As we transition from April showers and May flowers into the sustained higher temperatures associated with July, August, and September, we thought it would be a good time to provide some helpful feedback for keeping cool, and doing our part as golfers to maintain the health of the courses.

By Mike Kiesling, Director of Golf

Let us start by setting our golf course style to cool. Lighter colors made out of a more breathable fabric easily trump the 100% cotton shirts of yesteryear. Many manufactures now incorporate sun-blocking materials into their garments that sport upwards of an SPF rating of 50uv protection. Do not forget your headwear. Larger brimmed “bucket style” hats are best, but utilizing some form of headwear is necessary. One thing a lot of us forget to do is apply sunblock. If you do not like the lotions, get a nice spray that you can keep in your bag and reapply throughout the round. Most sunbathers spend less time on a beach than we do on a golf course for a typical round, so re-applying is a must. Do not play on an empty stomach. Try to eat a light meal prior to teeing off, or snack on granola/nutrition bars during play. Lastly, and probably most important, is make sure you hydrate properly. Plan to play golf tomorrow, make certain and drink plenty of water or sports drinks the day before. It is difficult to stay properly hydrated during your round, as you are losing as much or more fluids during play than you can consume. As we move into early summer, it becomes imperative that we, as golfers, make an overt effort to repair ball marks on the greens. The greens will begin to face the stresses of Mother Nature, as she raises the temperature and turns off the rain. Besides making for a bumpy putting surface, an unrepaired ball mark is an open door for the diseases and fungal growth that can spread from that one simple dimple in a green. The golf course is part of our family, and we as golfers need to do what we can to keep it heathy. Our golf operations teams will also be on both courses hydrating and cooling our putting surfaces for the better part of the entire day. These irrigation teams own the “right of way.” When you encounter a group of our irrigation tech services, putting surface play is suspended on that hole until they finish their job. They are generally done in five minutes or less and groups will at most encounter this once or twice during their rounds. You are never too young to learn, or exhibit proper care for the course etiquette. Member Kennedy Zahn, and friend, Bella Caputto, took it upon themselves to look after holes #1 and #2 on the Cottonwood Valley Course. Kennedy and Bella can be seen cleaning up the water hazard and clogged drainage after heavy rains. Thank you, ladies, for your efforts. Summer is a great time to get your games in shape for the 2021 Club Championship Weekend scheduled for September 24 – 25. Last year we were restricted by state and local guidelines that prevented us from celebrating this event the way we should. We are excited for this event, and look forward to crowning our newest club champions.

Welcome Summer golf

Step 1

Place a golf club across your chest, with each hand touching the opposite shoulder as you stand in your golf posture. Keep your arms in this position throughout the drill.

Shift into your right foot allowing your trail knee to lose some flexion. Turn your shoulders to your right (if you’re righthanded) allowing the club head to turn over your right foot. Your upper body should remain centered but in a tilt. Your left knee will bend toward the center of your stance.

Downswing will start with a shift in pressure to the lead foot as the shoulders will remain passive. The lower body will start to unwind as the grip of the club will start to point at the golf ball at impact. Step 3

PIVOT? How’syour

Although it’s a fairly simple movement, most weekend players continue to struggle with their backswing pivot. Once they pivot incorrectly, it’s difficult to uncoil properly during their downswing. And since these movements form the basis of your swing, these bad habits make any other improvements difficult. Here is a simple drill to help correct your pivot.

Step 2 Step 4

Finish balanced and on your lead foot after the you completed your swing.
