AUGUST NONRESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION STARTS DOWN NEARLY 10% COMPARED TO JULY August’s volume of construction starts, excluding residential activity, was $28.7 billion, according to ConstructConnect. The month-to-month performance was -9.8%, a somewhat steeper decline than the usual July-to-August change, due to seasonality, of -3.5%.

August of this year versus the same month of last year recorded a large drop, -18.5%. But standalone August of this year versus August’s average level over the previous five years (2012-2016 inclusive) was a less intimidating -3.5%. Year-to-date starts through the first eight months of 2017 are still slightly ahead of where they were for the same January-to-August period of 2016, +1.6%.

The starts figures throughout this report are not seasonally adjusted (NSA).

Nor are they altered for inflation. They are expressed in what are termed “current” as opposed to “constant” dollars.

Nonresidential building plus engineering/civil work accounts for a larger share of total construction than residential activity. The former’s combined proportion of total put-in-place construction in the Census Bureau’s July report was 56%; the latter’s was 44%.

ConstructConnect’s construction starts are leading indicators for the Census Bureau’s capital investment or put-in-place series. Also, the reporting period for starts (i.e., August 2017) is one month ahead of the reporting period for the investment series (i.e., July 2017). According to the latest Employment Situation report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the total number of jobs in the U.S. construction sector rose by +28,000 in August. The monthly average increase so far in 2017 has been +17,000, nearly double 2016’s +9,000 for the same time frame.

The NSA unemployment rate in construction has dropped to 4.7%. A year ago, it was 5.1%. Rebuilding efforts in the Houston area and throughout Florida, after the painfully severe touch-downs of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, are sure to increase the demand for construction workers.

The year-over-year climb in the number of construction jobs in August, at +3.2%, was already more than double the rate of increase for all employment in the economy, +1.4%. Payroll improvements in two other sectors also suggest further pickups in on-site building work. Hiring by ‘architectural and engineering services’ firms in August was a robust +3.7% year over year. Additionally, employment with ‘machinery and equipment rental firms’ moved from being flat year over year at the beginning of 2017 to an advance of +7.1% in the most recent month.

August’s month-to-month (m/m) starts decline (-9.8%) was caused by a drop of one-quarter (-25.0%) in commercial work and an almost equally harsh contraction in the institutional (-22.7%) category. models.

HOW HURRICANES AFFECT CONSTRUCTION JOBS The damage brought by Hurricane Harvey has upended the lives of thousands of Texans and continues to wreak havoc on their communities. Rebuilding will take time, but with it will likely come a slew of construction jobs, as roads, buildings, and homes get needed repairs in the coming months.

It’s a trend that has shown itself in the most devastating hurricanes to hit the US in recent decades: the storm lands and in the following months construction jobs grow faster than the national average.

BUT WHERE WILL THE WORKERS COME FROM? The first concern with rebuilding will be the financial resources necessary: Will insurance companies cover all the losses, and how much of them? How will the federal government’s heavily indebted flood insurance program come up with the cash to pay claims? And how much additional assistance will the federal government provide?

There’s another problem: a lack of human resources. There are particular shortages in the types of trades that get called into action after a disaster. America’s construction labor force has undergone a sea change in the past decade.

When the housing bust came, hundreds of thousands of roofers and other skilled and unskilled tradespeople were laid off. Because the recovery was remarkably slow, many went on to find work in different industries. Many construction workers had come to the United States (legally and illegally) from Mexico and Central America to work in the boom years, and in the bust years some of them went home. Others were deported.

OPTIMISM HIGH FOR US COMMERCIAL CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Commercial construction is in high demand across the country and contractors remain optimistic about the current and forward-looking health of the sector, according to the Q3 USG Corporation + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index. Nearly all contractors surveyed this summer (95%) expect revenues to grow or remain stable over the next 12 months compared to the prior 12 months, nearly the same percentage as in the Q2 2017 survey. Most contractors (93%) also expect to see profit margins stay the same or increase in the next 12 months, reflecting healthy contractor sentiment.

Despite contractors’ expectations for growth, access to talent continues to pose challenges in the third quarter of 2017, with 60% of contractors having difficulty finding skilled workers, compared to 61% in Q2. Nearly all contractors (91%) said they are at least moderately concerned about the skill level of the workforce, with 66% of contractors in the South expressing concerns about the availability of skilled labor. The Index release comes on the heels of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which are expected to exacerbate existing concerns about labor shortages in the South.

“The Commercial Construction Index is unique in providing the contractor’s view of the state of the industry, which is a key driver of the U.S. economy,” said Jennifer Scanlon, president and chief executive officer of USG Corporation. “This quarter’s findings reveal strong optimism about future prospects for the industry, and also highlight a real need to address ongoing concerns about skilled labor shortages and the impact it has on building in the U.S.” The Index looks at the results of three leading indicators to gauge confidence in the commercial construction industry — backlog levels, new business opportunities and revenue forecasts — generating a composite index on a scale of 0 to 100 that serves as an indicator of health for the contractor segment on a quarterly basis.

The Q3 2017 composite index score was 73, down slightly from the second quarter’s 76, but close to the first quarter’s 74, representing a consistent sentiment of health in the sector.

The Q3 results from the three key drivers were: • Backlog — On average, contractors currently hold 9.5 months of backlog, close to their average ideal amount of 12 months, indicating a steady market and healthy amount of booked work. This represents 77% of their ideal backlog levels.

• New Business — More than half of contractors (54%) reported high confidence in new business over the next 12 months (compared to 59% in Q2).

• Revenues — The majority of contractors (67%) continue to expect revenues to grow or remain stable in the next year, although expectations for the rate of expected growth inched toward more modest levels (compared to 71% in Q2).

“The commercial construction industry employs millions of Americans and the contributions the sector makes to the U.S. economy are vital to our country’s growth,” said Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber.

“However, finding skilled workers remains a challenge for this industry, and it’s likely to remain a challenge in the areas affected by the recent hurricanes. Finding skilled construction workers will be essential to ensure the Gulf region is able to quickly and efficiently rebuild.”

This quarter, contractors surveyed were also asked about workforce skills development after revealing insights last quarter about the increasing difficulty in finding skilled workers. Respondents identified safety, technical proficiency, and communication as the most valued skills on the jobsite. Of note, there is a wide gap (40%) in the number of contractors who note the importance of communication skills and those who think their workers have strong skills in that area.

Just over half (53%) of contractors surveyed in Q3 said they plan to hire new workers, a decrease from 66% in Q2. This is accompanied by a 10% increase over last quarter in the number of contractors that plan to keep the same number of workers, indicating an anticipated shift from hiring staff to maintaining staff levels in the upcoming fall and winter months.

August Construction Input Prices Rise As Global Economic Recovery Continues

Construction input prices rose 0.6% in August and are up 3.7% on a yearly basis, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) analysis of the Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Nonresidential construction input prices behaved similarly, rising 0.6% for the month and 3.5% for the year.

Only three of the 11 key construction input prices fell for the month. The inputs experiencing declines in prices were steel mill products (-1.5%), prepared asphalt, tar roofing and siding products (-0.3%), and natural gas (-1.8%). Crude petroleum prices exhibited the largest increase, rising 11% on a monthly basis and 15% on an annual basis.

“If we consider what ought to be happening with respect to materials prices, we would expect them to be marching steadily higher,” said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. “After all, the global economic recovery is an increasingly synchronized one. China is on pace to meet growth expectations this year. Europe, Japan, Brazil, Russia and other nations are experiencing meaningfully better recoveries this year compared to 2016. While some economies like Great Britain’s and India’s have stumbled a bit lately, the broader story is one of more rapid global economic growth, driven in large measure by a low interest rate, post-austerity policy environment.

“The world’s improving global economic environment has helped stabilize demand and prices for various commodities.

As a result, we are not observing the sharp declines in input prices that occurred during much of 2014 and 2015,” said Basu.

“Demand for materials in the United States also remains reasonably high, given ongoing momentum in a number of private segments and indications of stable activity among road builders. The fact that asset prices have been rising, including in key global equity markets, has contributed to pushing materials prices higher, with positive wealth effects triggering greater confidence among real estate developers.

“For now, policymakers around the world appear focused on supporting economic growth. While this may ultimately translate into problematic global inflation, for now inflation remains under control,” said Basu. “That suggests that accommodative monetary policy will continue to remain in place in much of the world, which will support asset prices, economic growth and demand for construction materials. While surging construction materials prices are unlikely during the near term, with the exception of areas recently impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, so too are large declines.”

DODGE MOMENTUM INDEX SLIPS IN AUGUST ON DIP IN COMMERCIAL CONSTRUCTION

The Dodge Momentum Index moved lower in August, falling 2.4% to 129.1 (2000=100) from its revised July reading of 132.2. The Momentum Index is a monthly measure of the first (or initial) report for nonresidential building projects in planning, which have been shown to lead construction spending for nonresidential buildings by a full year.

The decline in August can be attributed to an 8.7% drop in the commercial component of the Momentum Index, while the institutional component rose 7.3%. The commercial component has seen a steep rise over the past year as large projects – particularly office buildings – entered the planning cycle. The August retreat for the commercial component brings planning activity back to a level more consistent with a sustainable pace of development.

In August, eight projects entered planning, each with a value of $100 million or more. For the institutional building sector, the leading projects were the $230-million University of New Mexico hospital replacement project in Albuquerque, NM and a $218-million high school in Aledo, TX. The leading commercial building projects were the $205-million Niagara Falls Grand Hotel in Niagara Falls, NY and a $178-million Amazon fulfillment center in Salem, OR.

New, SingleFamily Home Builder Confidence Drops Amid Hurricane Uncertainty Builder confidence in the market for newly built single-family homes fell three points to a level of 64 in September from a downwardly revised August reading of 67 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI).

“The recent hurricanes have intensified our members’ concerns about the availability of labor and the cost of building materials,” said NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald, a home builder and developer from Kerrville, TX. “Once the rebuilding process is underway, I expect builder confidence will return to the high levels we saw this spring.”

“Despite this month’s drop, builder confidence is still on very firm ground,” said NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz. “With ongoing job creation, economic growth and rising consumer confidence, we should see the housing market continue to recover at a gradual, steady pace throughout the rest of the year.”

Derived from a monthly survey that NAHB has been conducting for 30 years, the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index gauges builder perceptions of current single-family home sales and sales expectations for the next six months as “good,” “fair” or “poor.” The survey also asks builders to rate traffic of prospective buyers as “high to very high,” “average” or “low to very low.” Scores for each component are then used to calculate a seasonally adjusted index where any number over 50 indicates that more builders view conditions as good than poor.

The move comes on the heels of an oil patch slowdown last year and the store’s ongoing effort to streamline operations and get rid of some less profitable rental items.

Oil and Gas production and potash mining drive much of the area’s economy yet store owner Bill Deringer looks to the local community to drive sales. “We don’t really specialize in long-term leases to petroleum and mining customers like some of the big rental stores around here, although we have a few,” said Deringer, who has been in the rental business in Carlsbad for 33 years. “Instead, our focus is the local market and rental units that go out for two hours, four hours, a full day, or even a week. We keep most products in our rental line small enough so customers can haul them or tow them with a pickup.”

In addition to renting to contractors and area homeowners, the store also sells a full line of high-end lawn and garden equipment, including names like Stihl, Ariens, Gravely, Toro and Walker. “Lawn and garden sales

have been especially good this year,” added Deringer, a reflection of the area’s growth.

“We have a new Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza, and Carl’s Jr. opening soon along with a hotel, an apartment complex and new homes under construction. For a rental store that’s doing well this year, our yard looks relatively empty thanks to all the work being done in the area.

“In part because they are in such demand, skid-steer loaders and small excavators are generating a good ROI this year, as are Hilti tools.” His store sometimes rents a surprising number of chainsaws, some long-term, to oil patch contractors who use them for sawing up railroad ties, clearing mesquite, or cutting poly.

The rate increase allowed Deringer to buy some new equipment this year and continue to update his rental inventory to help keep the utilization rate where it needs to be. It also allows his store to provide the high level of service customers expect. His 14 employees, many of whom have several years of rental experience, are an important part of this equation, he emphasized.

TEXAS: INCREASE WAS OVERDUE After eight to 10 years of no rate increases, Top Gunn Equipment Rentals in Austin, TX raised its rates a couple of years ago. “When equipment manufacturers went with Tier 4 Final engines, the prices of skid-steer loaders, trenchers and excavators, along with other equipment with 50-hp engines and above increased substantially. We raised our rates five to 10 percent to help defray some of those costs. But most of it also went across our entire inventory in part to make up for no increase for such a long time,” said Brandon Marrs, company president.

Top Gunn has been renting equipment in the Austin area for 20 years and currently has a location in both north and south Austin. In addition to renting a full line of equipment to small and mid-size contractors, the store is a Hustler, Walker, Toro and Stihl outdoor power equipment dealer and offers some of this equipment in its rental inventory.

“We started out by renting trailers,” noted Marrs, “and that line is still among the most profitable in our rental inventory. Their ROI is great compared to other rental items, but trailers can also be our biggest liability with so much exposure on the highway. You just have to make sure you have the appropriate insurance and keep them very well maintained.”

Despite the economic picture in Austin looking good, Marrs is paying attention to trends, looking for signs of a slowdown. He mentioned there’s a hint of one coming. “This year has been a roller coaster. Rental sales have not increased, instead they’ve been running dead even to last year. Even though Austin is in a bit of a bubble and wasn’t impacted as severely by the last recession as other areas, it still pays to be proactive and run as lean as you can.”

GEORGIA: A RATE INCREASE DOESN’T HURT RELATIONSHIPS Not to say a rate increase is ever easy to sell, but when your business is based on forming relationships and not on price, they’re usually more well received. At least that’s how Darby Bryant characterized a recent rate increase for Action RentAll’s Cartersville and Rome stores in Georgia.

The company has been in business since 1961. Virag started working there right out of high school and now has been there 17 years. Customers range from contractors and small and large businesses, to government agencies and municipalities.

Virag explained that the stores have shied away from renting smaller equipment such as rug shampooers and so forth to homeowners. He noted that inventory takes up time without delivering a good return, and focuses instead on renting larger equipment to contractors and other customers primarily in the construction industry.

In line with that, skid-steer loaders and mini excavators, machines with attachments that also generate revenue, have been delivering a healthy ROI thanks to all the building throughout the Midwest. Seasonal and other long-term rentals for this equipment are good for their utilization rate, as well, Virag added.

Vandalia Rental employs 50 people among its three locations and has more than $30 million in its rental inventory.

ILLINOIS: RENTAL RATES HOLDING STEADY Brad Kniep of Morton Rentals in Morton, IL doesn’t plan on raising rental rates in the near term. Currently, he doesn’t feel compelled to and if he did, it likely wouldn’t be that well received by customers anyway.

“Our rental rates are competitive, but they also fall in line with our market and our business model,” he emphasized. “I guess you could say our rates are high enough right now. We’re not in the same boat as other rental stores that are buying costly pieces of Tier 4 Final equipment and then trying to increase rates to pay for them.”

Since then, they’ve opened a second location in nearby Peoria after purchasing an American Rental store there.

“Between the two locations, we have about 40 team members,” said Brad. “Our revenue is probably divided 70/30 event/tools and equipment.

On the equipment side, we’re a day-toweek rental company and for now will leave the longer-term rentals to the national stores in our area.”

He added that sales this year, like his rates, have been steady with few surprises. “Our earthmoving rentals like skid-steer loaders, however, have seemed to have picked up, thanks to an increase in building construction.”

In 2016, Brad and Amanda brought in a few key partners to help grow their business. “We are very excited with the team we have in place,” Brad emphasized. “Big things are coming.”

KANSAS: LABOR, LABOR, LABOR Rental rates for Anderson Rental in Shawnee, Kansas, increased by three to five percent in 2015 and 2016. During that same period, revenue grew by 15 percent each of the two years. This year, however, is a different story. Rates have been held steady and rental sales are a bit off, compared to the previous two years.

Store owner Steve Dietsch contributes this to market forces, more specifically from competition and labor challenges. “We’re feeling some downward pressure from area national companies that we haven’t felt before,” he explained. “They are doing more with compact dirt equipment and that has slowed rental sales in that category for us. This year, we’ve made up some

ground by adding a few more compact and mini loaders to our inventory, products that are in demand by landscape and small flat work contractors.”

Even though the local economy seems to be doing well, Dietsch noted that it could and should be doing better. “Talk with contractors and owners of construction companies and they will tell you there’s plenty of growth opportunities for them if they could only find the help. Hence, they’re not going to grow at the pace they would like and we’re not going to get the additional rental business. Companies aren’t going to rent 10 loaders if they only have eight people to run them.”

The labor shortage spills over into the rental rates arena. “Even if we could raise them this year, we couldn’t raise them high enough to offset the rate at which equipment costs are going up,” said Dietsch. “We try to make up the difference in other areas such as increasing delivery charges and damage waivers and pursuing more business in parts, service work, and sales.”

He noted that changing demographics have impacted rental sales, too. What DIY’er business hasn’t already gone to the big box stores is drying up from Millennials who don’t’ want to own homes or spend time maintaining them. That’s a big reason his homeowner business, which accounts for 15 percent of rental sales, is trending more toward serious homeowners who want to save a few bucks. In the meantime, Anderson Rental will continue to focus on the contractor and commercial market and finding more ways to compete with the big boys. ■

1. Use a mobile portal to radically change the way you transact with your customers.

Whether you want to streamline your POS system or offer your customers a mobile application to control their rental assets, new mobile portals are offering an easy way to improve customer loyalty and satisfaction. At the point of sale, you can use a tablet to do the transaction and walk around the showroom in your store with the customer. In the field, you can provide customers a way to control their rentals, allow them to order new equipment themselves and request for maintenance or return.

Many rental companies are reluctant to offer their customers more control, but in today’s word, customers want to be in the driver’s seat. If you don’t offer that privilege, they will go elsewhere. If they are in control, however, they will trust your rental company and order more equipment from a single vendor. It can alert you of availability issues or non-profitable jobs at the quote level before it’s too late. 3. Improve logistics.

Modern rental systems offer a dispatch center with GPS location of fleet combined with mobile applications to communicate efficiently between the store and the field. CHALLENGES FOR RENTAL COMPANIES AND CUSTOMERS Managing a complex structure through system integration: As businesses grow and the customer/equipment portfolio diversifies, processes tend to become more involved and require advanced support - quoting and renting, procurement and vendor management, timely monitoring of inventory and warehouses, ensuring equipment maintenance and service scheduling as-well as reporting and visibility - all of which are now heavily reliant on system integration.

Equipment availability: The ability to accurately track an equipment item is now an essential requirement of any dedicated operating system but further, so is the ability to identify whether the item can be rented immediately on return, or if servicing/inspection is due. The process needs to happen fluidly, from the moment the rental inquiry is made, to the equipment servicing/ inspection due, and back to rental availability again.

Profitability: Typically, an equipment item should return 25% of its purchase price annually, and in the absence of a dedicated asset management solution, calculating depreciation and ROI can be daunting. THE FOUR COMMON TYPES OF TREADS AND THEIR BENEFITS

You have several options for the tread pattern on your CTL tracks. Each trend pattern has its own strengths and weaknesses, and which one is best for you will depend on your machine’s typical work conditions.

STAGGERED BLOCK TREAD As the standard tread pattern option provided for many factory-direct loaders from manufacturers such John Deere, Bobcat, Case, Takeuchi, Volve, New Holland, Mustang, Gehl and others, the staggered block tread is perhaps the most popular and most commonly used tread pattern type.

This tread design is the most general-purpose pattern available, though it is particularly well-suited for use on hard and abrasive surfaces such as paved highways and gravel.

In general, treads with this pattern will be the most durable and longest-lasting if your work conditions require turning frequently on hot paved surfaces.

While other tread designs are more adapted to specific different terrain types, staggered block treads will operate smoothly on hard surfaces, cause minimal ground disturbances when used on finished lawns, and are generally suitable for use on sand, clay, dirt, mud, gravel and asphalt.

C-LUG TREAD This tread pattern is very similar in appearance to the staggered block tread; however, the C-lug tread has notches cut out of each block, creating a sideways “C” shape.

For those whose CTLs will operate off-road, the C-lug tread is the mostly flexible across a variety of terrain types.

This tread pattern is extremely durable, and

its high number of cutting edges allows for increased traction, superior handling and improved performance.

Designed to provide a smooth ride over a number of different surfaces, the C-lug tread works well for clay, mud, asphalt, concrete, gravel and sand.

STRAIGHT BAR TREAD Designed to maximize traction, the straight bar tread pattern is specifically made for those who frequently need to operate their CTL on wet or muddy terrain. The design of this tread will significantly reduce the risk of getting stuck in the mud as compared to the staggered block or C-lug tread patterns.

Moreover, the straight bar tread design is the least likely to tear up finished turf, thanks to its lower durometer rating, allowing you to pivot as well as operate

at low or high speeds without scarring the underlying lawn.

However, this increased traction does come with some downsides, and straight bar treads provide rougher rides than either staggered block or C-lug treads.

MULTI BAR TREAD While other tread patterns like the staggered block and C-lug treads work well on a variety of surfaces, the multi bar tread pattern is most appropriate when the operator needs to move back and forth between loose ground cover and hard surfaces.

This tread design is able to switch quickly between the smooth ride that is desirable on paved surfaces and the increased traction that is needed on loose ground cover. As compared to the straight bar tread design, multi bar treads provide a smoother ride across

terrain types. In addition, the multi bar tread design is tremendously popular for use in snow.

CHOOSING THE TREAD THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU Keep in mind that while each tread is specifically designed for particular applications, they are all intended for a wide range of applications. For example, while the multi bar is particularly well suited for snow removal, all tread patterns are capable of completing this task to some degree.

The biggest benefit to choosing a tread pattern that most closely matches your work demands is that doing so can help prolong the life of your treads, thus lowering your operating costs and boosting productivity. The more repetitive your tasks are, the more impactful it will be to choose a specific tread type.

“A good rubber track is one that lowers your operating costs in the application you’re running,” she says.

“What differentiates them is the rubber compound, the tread design, the carcass thickness, iron core and alignment of steel cables.”

Michaud-Verrault notes that each track manufacturer offers unique features to extend the life and increase the durability of their tracks. Camso, for example, offers its CTL SD tracks

featuring single-cure technology for even tread wear and long, predictable tread life. An optimized zigzag tread pattern maintains traction throughout tread life, while endless high-tensile steel cables help to eliminate unexpected downtime due to cable/track breakage. Meanwhile, the Trackguard iron core improves rolling path life for enhanced durability.

Camso’s CTL HXD heavy-duty tracks, for their part, also feature an

optimized H-type tread pattern and endless high-tensile steel cables to handle severe applications.

ASV offers three styles of rubber tracks with different tread depths.

Wake says the aggressive style has a deep tread for maximum traction, while the standard is effective for everyday applications. Turf tracks have no tread at all for minimal turf damage in highly manicured areas such as golf courses or lawns.

According to Wake at ASV, the most reliable way to ensure tracks are of high quality is to buy directly from the original equipment manufacturer rather than choosing lower-priced aftermarket tracks.

“Customers are guaranteed quality and after-sale support when they buy from the OEM,” he says. “There’s no way for a buyer to know how a set of aftermarket tracks were made, if they’re manufactured from quality materials, and whether there will be after-sale support from the seller.

Anyone can pour rubber into a mold and create a good-looking track, but it’s what’s inside the track as a result of years of engineering and testing that matters.”

What’s most important when selecting a CTL track is to match it with your application and its severity, which will determine the quality level you’ll need.”

Operation is a factor Of course, in addition to the type of work the machine will be doing, the operator plays an important role as well. Improper or aggressive operation is a major contributor to excessive wear, says Wake at ASV, something rental businesses have very little control over.

“To minimize damage, train customers on proper operation before they use the equipment,” he says.

“They engage the interior tread of the track, and they are carefully crafted to ensure the best fit with the specific make and model of your loader,” says MichaudVerrault. “Check the teeth for the appearance of a ‘shark-fin’ profile – the thinning and sharpening of the tooth – at the wear tips. This thinning of the metal, along with any broken teeth, will degrade the fit and will result in excessive wear and tear on the track itself. The shark-fin look tells you it’s time to replace the sprocket.”

Compared with tires, tracks allow the machine to operate in very severe and unusual conditions. Given the surfaces and jobs required and without proper training and operator awareness, damage to the tracks, undercarriage and machine can result.

“Regularly inspect the track,” says Wake. “The average ASV rubber track life is about 2,000 hours but can be as high as 5,000 if maintained well. On the other hand, neglecting a rubber track can result in a wear life as low as 500 hours. To get the longest track life, check track tension and condition daily.”

“Cleaning the entire track system is essential to ensure a long and productive life,” says Michaud-Verrault.

“Material build-up can cause track misalignment, de-tracking, sprocket wear and over-tensioning. Each time you change out a track, that’s the ideal time to look over the complete undercarriage and give the sprockets a close inspection.”

Finally, keep in mind the most common problems associated with rubber tracks, aside from those caused by aggressive operation, are from improper track tensioning.

“A track that’s too tight can accelerate wear on the track as well as on bearings, wheels and sprockets,” says Wake. “Alternatively, a loose track can result in ratcheting — lugs skipping over sprocket rollers — which

accelerates wear or damage to the lugs.

A loose track also increases the risk of derailment.”

He concludes, “Make sure the track tension matches what is listed in the equipment manual.” ■

Propane Conversions Now Available for Multiple Vanguard Engines Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power engines are now available for propane conversion through Propane Power Systems. The EPA-certified conversions are available for 11 Vanguard and Commercial Series engines, ranging in displacement from 205cc single-cylinder horizontals up to 993cc BIG BLOCK V-Twin engines. DOOSAN BOBCAT DONATES OVER $325,000 IN EQUIPMENT TO ASSIST WITH HURRICANE HARVEY AND IRMA RELIEF EFFORTS Doosan Bobcat is donating over $325,000 worth of Bobcat equipment and Doosan Portable Power light towers and generators to assist with Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma relief efforts. The company is also providing financial assistance to affected Doosan Bobcat North America dealership employees and their families, and Doosan Bobcat North America employees will direct annual charitable drives toward assisting those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

In the days before Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, Doosan Bobcat expedited equipment and attachment deliveries to impacted areas in an effort to be immediately prepared for clean-up efforts. $10M IN STOLEN EQUIPMENT IN 2016 → The 2016 LoJack Construction Equipment Theft Recovery Report revealed the following:

■■ 69% of the recovered construction equipment installed with the LoJack Commercial system were recovered within 24 hours after being reported as stolen to law enforcement ■■ Since the study began in 2000, more than $186 million** worth of stolen heavy equipment has been recovered using the LoJack System ■■ The top equipment types recovered were in proportion to those used on jobsites: 1/ Wheeled and Tracked Loaders (36%) – used to shovel or move material around 2/ Towables (35%) - generators, air compressors, cement mixers, and welders 3/ Skid Loaders (15%) - specialty vehicles with a range of powered attachments ■■ The following were the top three most stolen and recovered construction equipment brands: 1/ Doosan Bobcat (26%) 2/ John Deere (17%) 3/ Caterpillar (8%) ■■ 50% of the commercial equipment stolen was no more than five years old ■■ Equipment was recovered 97% of the time in the same state where it was stolen A 2014 National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) report indicated that up to $1 billion is lost annually due to construction equipment theft and only 23% of it is ever recovered.

Opportunistic equipment thieves are targeting assets which are difficult for law enforcement to track and recover due to lack of standardization in production identification numbers.

“Thieves targeting the construction industry are becoming increasingly sophisticated and organized,” said Courtney DeMilio, national vice president of commercial and fleet for LoJack.

“Ultimately, we all shoulder the resulting cost in terms of loss of efficiency. At LoJack, we’re proud to work with law enforcement and the construction industry to recover stolen equipment and mitigate the dramatic impact on capital expense and operational downtime to construction businesses across the US.” The 2016 LoJack Construction Equipment Theft Recovery Report is gathered from LoJack’s proprietary theft and recovery data and EDA, a division of Randall-Reilly. The Slow Season Is

No Time to Slow Down Use the down time to encourage employees to be more productive, tackle big projects

I

t’s tempting to handle slower seasons as a time for the business to shift into neutral. Employers and employees might be thinking it’s a time for workers to rest up after a very busy time for your business.

Everyone needs and deserves rest and a certain amount makes sense.

I believe, however, that any protracted amount of time spent aimlessly tends to lead to lethargy. Employees tend to waste colossal amounts of time because they don’t have clear direction during slower months. In fact, the two to four months that rental businesses are considerably slower (than the remaining months of the year) should be spent much more wisely.

Keep employees busy and productive. Don’t let it become acceptable to waste time even though it’s a slower business season. Once employees develop a habit of wasting time they can become sloppy and their follow through might diminish as well. Also, it’s much more difficult to get them geared up again when the busy season approaches.

Investigate and implement enhanced preventive maintenance processes and procedures. There might be certain special preventive maintenance procedures that could be implemented that would reduce the chances of breakdowns and make the busy season more productive. Consider using the services of an experienced rental business consultant for analysis and recommendations.

Slower months can also be utilized to investigate and implement technology improvements. Even if you are satisfied with your rental software, there are plenty of other technological opportunities that might help your company tremendously.

Here are a few other key points to consider: »» In addition to developing a plan for the upcoming busy season, it’s also wise to develop a written plan for the slower months. Getting everyone involved will help to ensure a successful outcome. »» Be sure to delegate where appropriate. One can’t spearhead all that can and should be done. Remember, some key staff members might be eager for the challenge and responsibility.

Even though investing resources going into a slower season is a tough decision, making prudent changes now can help to make your successful rental company into a super-successful one in the near future. ■
