Costly Jobsite Collisions Camera and radar technologies eliminate natural blind spots on heavy earthmoving equipment

T

he automotive industry leads the way in object detection and collision mitigation systems with integrated camera and radar technology. Eliminating collisions due to natural blind spots has been a high priority in recent years and the resulting collision mitigation systems were rapidly adopted for use in the trucking industry. Now this technology is proliferating in the heavy construction market.

“This technology is mainstream in the automobile world and I see it becoming more mainstream on heavy equipment very soon,” says Sean Martell, North America mining and construction sales manager, PRECO Electronics.

“To reduce accidents, object detection must become mainstream and will as the quality of products and their ability to address different risk scenarios improves,” says Henry Morgan, director and CEO, Brigade Electronics. “Systems will definitely become more intelligent and reliable...

detection of moving objects/people/cyclists and linking of cameras to detection devices, as well as RFID and CANbus, will result in effective collision avoidance.”

Large earthmovers inherently have blind spots, which vary depending on equipment type. To limit risks, camera technology has been widely adopted on many machines. The most basic are backup cameras. Then there are systems with multiple cameras that allow operators to scroll between viewing screens. The most advanced multi-camera systems offer a full 360° view around the machine.

Installation of camera systems doesn’t require a lot of effort. “Camera systems are easy to install — even 360° camera systems that provide a bird’s eye view all around the machine,” says Morgan. “[Camera systems] enable machine operators to see areas of risk, but they are not a standalone solution. There are so many demands on machine operators that a well-designed detection system is essential to help operators contend with constantly changing risks.”

Prevent operator overload The problem is the attention required from the operator. “Cameras and mirrors are passive technology and are only helpful if an operator is looking into them,” says Martell. “Active radar technology detects hazards (humans and objects) inside the defined danger zones and actively alerts the operator that a hazard is present. This technology also provides the operator with a proximity alert that identifies the distance the hazard is from the sensor, both moving and non-moving.

VOLVO’S DIG ASSIST is a machine control solution that provides object detection capabilities.

BRIGADE ELECTRONIC’S BACKSENSE is comprised of a 5.25-in. diameter circular radar sensor connected to an in-cab audio-visual display that uses LED distance indicators. This unit emits a tone that increases in pulse rate the closer an object is to the external sensor.

“But no operator should use only one safety feature in lieu of the others. Cameras, mirrors and object detection technologies are designed to be used together. However, new technologies alone do possess the power to significantly improve site safety.”

Being in the automotive market, Hyundai is not a newcomer to the benefits of collision avoidance systems. “We are very confident that our All-Around View Monitoring System (AAVM) and similar systems will become mainstream technologies, and it won’t take very long,” says Corey Rogers, marketing manager, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas. “Equipment owners and operators see the value and they’re starting to demand this capability. We’re seeing greater demand in certain regions — like the West Coast, Northeast and Canada — and in industries such as oil and gas.

But the demand will keep growing across all geographies and industries. New regulations may also have a role in accelerating the growth of view monitoring and object detect systems.”

Brigade Electronics offers BACKSENSE for the aftermarket. It is comprised of an 8.5” x 5” radar sensor connected to an in-cab audio-visual display

that uses LED distance indicators. The unit emits a tone that increases in pulse rate the closer an object is to the external sensor. It uses Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar technology, which has a longer range than infra-red and ultrasonic waves and is able to travel through snow, rain, mud, dirt and even plastic.

PRECO Sentry is also available for the aftermarket. It has a fully adjustable detection zone, with the ability to detect objects from the face of the radar up to 98 ft., and the width of the detection zone is adjustable to fit almost all vehicle types. Sentry accurately identifies the location and velocity of up to 16 people or objects simultaneously. It is also designed to withstand the harsh environments encountered by heavy-duty equipment.

Cutting edge solutions

Volvo’s E-Series crawler excavators come standard with a rear view camera, side view camera and 8-in. high-resolution display. They also offer an optional Smart View feature, which provides an aerial, bird’s eye view of the machine and its 360° surroundings. “Rear view cameras are also standard on all our GPE-sized wheel loaders and articulated haulers,” says McLean.

WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY ON THE HORIZON

Wearable technology that allows workers to communicate with machines on the jobsite is gaining momentum and will continue to do so moving forward.

“Our partner company, Modular Mining, has done research into wearable technology with considerable success and is investigating market solutions at this time,” says Komatsu’s Don Lindell. “The benefits include immediate feedback to the wearer, as well as individual interaction with the equipment.

“Where possible, wearable technology clearly offers benefits over passive technologies,” he continues. “However, it should be considered just one part of a multi-layer overall solution.”

“Additionally, our H-Series wheel loaders are available with a radar detect system that works with the standard rear view and optional forwardfacing camera to alert the operator of any obstacles in close proximity,” he says. “Our latest innovations in regard to object detection and visibility, however, come in the form of our new in-cab interface, Volvo Co-Pilot.”

Volvo’s Dig Assist is a machine control solution that provides object detection capabilities. Co-Pilot is a 10-in. touchscreen interface with a suite of machine-specific applications that provide the operator with visibility to a host of safety- and productivity-enhancing information, including machine position

and real-time job progress. “These applications currently include Dig Assist for excavators, Load Assist for wheel loaders, Compact Assist for soil and asphalt compactors, and soon we’ll offer Haul Assist for articulated haulers,” says McLean.

Intelligent nachine solutions drive revamped Volvo CE services portfolio Dig Assist is a machine control solution that provides the operator with greater visibility to both the surroundings and job progress. “Utilizing the Co-Pilot screen, the operator can see realtime position of the boom, arm and bucket, all in relation to parameters set specifically for the task at hand, alerting the operator when target grade or depth have been reached,” McLean explains. “Dig Assist also allows for setting a height alarm to help the operator avoid power lines or other obstacles.

The operator has the ability to simultaneously monitor up to four views of the machine, including side, front, top and 3D views. The system can be outfitted with Smart View, which provides a 360° aerial view of the machine and its surroundings.

Dig Assist reduces the need for staff working in close proximity to the excavator. “By being able to see depth and grade in real time from the cab, Dig Assist reduces the need for manual depth checks conducted by someone in the trench,” says McLean. “Similarly, by providing the ability to use in-field design and quick measure functionality directly from the cab, the need for on-site surveyors or engineers may be greatly reduced.”

OBJECT DETECTION IS KEY TO AUTONOMY With autonomous machine solutions on the visible horizon, there will be a significant push to develop even better and more sophisticated object detection technology.

Radar technology, which is dependable in all weather conditions, will be a key enabler. “In order for an autonomous vehicle to safely navigate our public transportation infrastructure, the vehicle will need accurate and dependable radar collision avoidance technology,” says Sean Martell, PRECO Electronics.

“We also believe that the role of radar is yet to be defined as a trigger for a variety of autonomous vehicle actions.”

More to come The technology continues to rapidly evolve.

“At this time, these systems are surprisingly accurate and newer technologies will bring even more capabilities,” says Lindell. “The real challenge is the continued development required as technology changes. A92.20 changes are expected to include: • LOAD SENSING: Machines will actively monitor loads. They will stop operating with normal functionality, and sound an alarm when overloaded.

• SUSTAINED INVOLUNTARY OPERATION PROTECTION: Hand-operated controls on the platform shall be protected against sustained involuntary operation. This protection will prevent further movement of the machine in the direction of trapping or allow the operator to reverse or stop the trapping movement.

• MORE STRINGENT WIND FORCE REQUIREMENTS: Outdoor machines will have increased weight and reduced capacities. Coupled

with new stability testing requirements, we expect foam-filled or solid tires will become necessary on the majority of booms and rough terrain scissor lifts.

• SCISSOR RAIL HEIGHT will increase, necessitating folding rails on compact models to ensure they fit through standard doors.

We are proud JLG AWPs, or Mobile Elevating Working Platforms (MEWPs), as they will be called under the new standards include: SkyGuard®, JLG’s enhanced control panel protection system as standard equipment on all booms, foam-filled or solid tires on all MEWPs, and scissors equipped with self-closing gates and toe boards, many with fold down rails.

Our focus on safety doesn’t stop when a machine ships. A strong emphasis on operator training is supported through a full range of training opportunities at our Training Center and Proving Grounds in McConnellsburg, PA, or on location.

In addition to product changes, JLG expects familiarization and training requirements to be updated as part of the new ANSI standard. The Manual of Responsibilities, which currently has multiple versions, may become a single document covering responsibilities for all MEWPs. Training requirements on machines are expected to expand to cover operators and occupants. Supervisors will likely be required to obtain training on MEWP selection, applicable rules and regulations, potential product hazards, and knowledge of the operator’s manual.

Safety and safe machine operation must always be a priority. While the new ANSI standards will change the way aerial equipment business is conducted, it’s important to keep in mind their intent—improved safety. And when it comes to safety improvements, everyone wins. JLG will continue to be the MEWP industry leader through continuous product improvement, innovating new technologies, and enhanced training programs that keep workers out of harm’s way. ●

Keep Your Jobites Safe Following some key safety rules to enforce on construction sites to protect workers and ensure safer working conditions

E

ven the most well thought out and heavily planned construction jobs can have minor things happen that simply do not go according to plan. Monitoring some key areas and enforcing safety rules on projects can help prevent any injuries from occurring and ensure safer working conditions on site.

It’s self-evident that proper equipment and work practices are a must. This includes providing the appropriate PPE for the job, such as safety harnesses, hard hats and vests. Any wearable devices should be inspected regularly and replaced if damaged.

Ensure that any equipment used is well kept and reliable.

Equipment such as cranes and scaffolding should be inspected annually to make certain they are operating properly.

Make certain equipment has been tested per manufacturer recommendations and is free from damage. Conduct frequent inspections to ensure worker safety.

Before operation, any chains, ropes and hooks should be inspected for wear and tear. The weight capacity of the crane should be known and tested before being used on the actual construction site.

When a crane is used on site, loads should never be moved over workers. Areas of the construction site where the crane is utilized should be blocked off to prevent unauthorized access.

Forklift-related accidents are another cause for concern. These types of accidents account for some of the highest injury rates, with around 100,000 workers injured every year. Just like any other equipment, forklift tires and haulage equipment should be properly inspected and tested for any wear and tear.

Ensure safe access Scaffolding must be inspected regularly to test its rigidity and its ability to carry and support the intended weight. When utilized, the scaffolding must be placed on a solid and even foundation to prevent displacement, and should be at least 10 ft. away from overhead power lines.

Assembly and disassembly should be completed by an appointed person who is knowledgeable about the correct way to do so. Parts should be inspected before being reassembled on a jobsite.

Ladders are one of the biggest culprits for fall injuries.

Before using a ladder, check for any damage. Also ensure the ladder is long enough for the task and is propped up correctly.

When climbing ladders, workers should always have both feet and at least one hand in contact with the ladder. Avoid using metallic ladders near any sources of electricity, especially overhead power lines.

It’s important to be mindful of the type of soil material involved in and around the trench, and to ensure workers have a means of exiting the trench quickly in case an emergency does occur. In trenches that are deeper than 3 ft., ladders or other means of exit should be located every 20 ft.

All trenches should be made at varying angles, depending on the material involved.

Trench shoring/shielding should be used where required as determined by a designated competent person on site.

Heavy loads should always be kept at a safe distance from trenches, and any water accumulation within trenches should be dealt with immediately to prevent damage to the foundation.

Working with electricity Many construction sites involve dealing with electrical circuits or avoiding overhead power lines. Proper procedure when working with these elements is essential.

Before working in a construction zone, make sure all electrical sources and power lines are identified and located. Ensure any electrical sources are insulated and grounded.

When working on electrical circuits, make sure the power is off and that grounds are attached, especially if the circuits are visibly damaged or faulty.

Protect your eyes Eye protection is extremely important for any job. Workers should wear it to protect against any flying or detachable debris when work such as grinding and sanding is done. Employers should ensure the correct protection is being used and that it is effective.

W

hen it comes to operating compact equipment, safety should be at the forefront of every stakeholder’s mind, including business owners, managers and the operators themselves. Those who know and understand how to safely use equipment have the ability to work faster and more efficiently, leading to better overall performance and profitability.

Knowing how to properly use compact equipment can also help reduce the risk of injury to operators or others on jobsites.

Building a safety mindset requires a shared responsibility at all levels, proper training, daily integration, continuous improvement and positive reinforcement. A safety culture starts with management and operational staff members who treat safety and health as an investment, not a cost, and who value as well as demonstrate model behaviors. Also, employees who know how to properly use their equipment and follow manufacturers’ recommendations are more likely to use more safely and efficiently.

“Educating your operators on machine capabilities and safe operation is paramount to minimizing risks on the jobsite,” says Shawn Warkenthien, director of product safety for Bobcat Company.

“The amount of money you invest in safety education and training can reap dividends in increased performance and profitability… not to mention the decreased negative consequences of a careless work environment – injuries, insurance claims, lost revenue or even worse.”

Safety is always being refined and continuously improved upon, so dedicating time and resources will help strengthen areas as well as define strategies that can positively impact safety performance. Positive reinforcement – by celebrating and acknowledging efforts – is another key aspect that goes hand-in-hand with continuous improvement.

Some universal guidelines that can be used for all compact machines include: • Consult the Operation & Maintenance Manual before operating any type of compact equipment.

• Follow instructions on machine safety signs to avoid situations that can cause serious injuries or even death.

• Wear tight-fitting clothing that cannot get caught on working components or controls inside and outside of the machine.

• Always face the machine when getting in, and grab handles and use steps that are provided for a three-point contact.

• Fasten the seatbelt.

• Pay attention to warning lights and gauges.

• Never attempt to start the engine or operate the controls from outside the machine.

• Look to the rear first before backing up and check each side before swinging or turning the machine.

• Run at a low speed until the operator is comfortable with using the machine.

• Never allow riders on the machine.

• Keep all body parts inside the machine while it is running.

• Be aware of jobsite traffic patterns or potential hazards.

KEEPING WORKERS SAFE IN CONSTRUCTION ZONES

Contractor finds a better way to handle concrete barriers

T

he work of building and maintaining America’s roads and bridges relies heavily on the effective management of traffic, which includes limiting proximities among motorists, workers and equipment in construction zones.

A Federal Highway Administration (FHA) analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that collisions among vehicles and mobile equipment is the second most common cause of worker fatalities, contributing to an average 14% of worker fatalities in construction zones between 2005 and 2010.

Concrete road barriers are commonly used to direct the flow of traffic while curtailing worker exposure to passing cars, trucks and commercial passenger vehicles. Traditional barrier handling methods employed by contractors include rigging with slings or chains. Loads, however, are at risk of shifting or coming loose, and they are often free-swinging and difficult to control. On the ground, it often requires several tag line operators to guide materials into

position. All of these factors introduce potential hazards on the job and increase the risk of injury.

Mallette Bros. Construction discovered a better way to handle concrete road barriers by utilizing a hydraulic lifting system. After researching different options, the Gautier, Mississippi-based asphalt contractor began implementing hydraulic lifters at the start of a 630-day road-widening project.

Previously, Mallette Bros. had been using a manual scissor-type lifting apparatus that required a total of six workers to handle tasks associated with moving and positioning concrete road barriers, including the traffic and maintenance personnel necessary to perform time-consuming lane closures.

Mallette Bros. had originally assumed that in order to stay on track by relocating two miles, or approximately 10,000 linear feet, of barrier wall once every two to three weeks, it would require a total of 8.5 days to handle just this portion of the job. Within the first seven months of the project getting underway, the time required was revised down to 3.5 days.

According to project manager Carlos Morales, “We went from the ability of six people to move 75 barriers a day all the way down to two or three people handling 250 barriers a day... there is no comparison from either a safety or productivity standpoint. We have more than exceeded the time frame allotted ourselves, all in a safe manner.

“We are working within three to four feet of the traveling public, driving 80 miles an hour,” he said. “We don’t even do lane closures when using this system. That’s how confident we are in the product.” ● Information provided by Vacuworx

TAKE FIVE FOR SAFER HAULING Double check that your load is secure and your trailer is ready to tow

T

he job is done, and you’ve loaded your equipment. You aren’t thinking about whether or not your trailer can haul your skid loader, because you bought the right one. You want to get home, clean up, and enjoy your evening like everyone else. This is when it’s important to take five and double check that your load is secure and your trailer is ready to tow, and here’s how.

1. Check the hitch While it might seem obvious, the first thing to check is the hitch. It needs to be secured onto the ball or hook. This is easily overlooked when lowering the trailer to the receiver. Make sure the hitch is latched and check that the safety chains are hooked to the tow vehicle.

They need to be hooked in two different spots on the tow vehicle, not to each other. Plug the wire harness into the tow vehicle for the lights and electric brakes.

While doing so, attach the battery breakaway cable and make sure the battery is fully charged as well.

While you’re looking at the hitch, chains and break-away cable, check that the parking jack is fully retracted so it cannot catch on an incline.

Make sure all chains, drawbars and tools are secured so they don’t fly out while travelling down the road.

2. Secure the deck Securing loose objects or brushing off the deck is a must. If something falls off the trailer, there’s no telling which way it might bounce and it could easily damage another vehicle or cause injury to its occupants. This includes loose mud, sand, rocks and other materials that could be hazardous.

Also, make sure equipment doors are properly latched and other items are secured.

3. Take care of your wheels Inspect the tires and make sure they are properly inflated. A digital pressure gauge is an accurate

and fast way to check. Proper inflation ensures that the tire can perform according to its design.

Under-inflated tires can cause excessive wear on the outside of the tread and allow heat to build up, causing early tire failure. Over-inflation can cause excessive wear on the center of the tread and cause the tire to break loose under some conditions.

Lug nuts must also be checked at specific intervals according to your trailer manufacturer’s owner’s manual. Make sure they are tight against the wheel. Proper maintenance should keep the lugs tight, but if you do see one that looks loose, make sure you tighten it and check the others on that wheel. One loose lug nut can cause enough vibration to loosen the others and pretty soon the lug bolts become worn. If there is damage, replace them immediately. Simply keeping the lugs tight can prevent costly repairs.

4. Look at the lights Take a quick walk-around to see that all of the lights are working. Replace any broken or damaged lights. It’s also important that the red and white reflective conspicuity tape is not damaged or missing.

5. Are the ramps right?

Finally, make sure that the ramps are fully secured. There should be locking pins or strong spring tension holding the ramps in place.

Haul safely If you take five and check these areas, you’ll increase your chances of safe hauling. Accidents can happen, but by making sure your trailer is safe, it greatly reduces the risk.

Choose a Light Tower

rom an oil field to road construction, safety is key on any jobsite, not only to the safety of the workers but also to anyone who might come in contact with the jobsite.

One of the most critical choices on a jobsite is the products you choose to have your team use every day. When it comes to light, this choice can make the difference between a safe and productive work zone and a night of wasted time and resources. The reliability of the product is essential to ensure a productive night of work.

Any interaction point between a light tower and the operator needs to take safety into consideration. The most active touch points such as a winch, outriggers, fuel tank and control panels should be evaluated when choosing the right light tower for the safety of a jobsite.

The winch and outriggers are the heavily used features of a light tower. Proper set up and tear down of a piece of equipment is required to set the jobsite up for success. Some products are designed with the user in mind, meaning the placement of the winch is away from the actual tower. In the case of outriggers, some equipment manufacturers offer a four- or five-point stabilizer system to allow a light tower to remain operational in wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour. This precaution ensures the product won’t be blown over, causing damage to itself, other equipment, or even bystanders. This is very important and should be carefully considered on a jobsite.

Fuel capacity is another feature that is important when selecting a light tower. Many jobsites are large or in remote locations and need light towers placed in hard-to-access areas. With

this in mind, it’s beneficial for a light tower to have a larger fuel capacity to reduce the number of times a fuel truck has to service it. There are a few manufacturers who offer products with up to 100 gallons of fuel capacity. This allows the light tower to operate for extended periods before needing to be refueled. Minimized touch points and reduced service time result in cost savings that can add up quickly, especially on large and remote jobsites.

Of course the output of light provides a safe work environment and needs to be monitored to ensure safety for all of those around a jobsite. Light shined into a person eyes is going to cause glare. There are products which offer angle settings to avoid the direct use of the light, or visor shields which can shield some of the light from passers-by, while still providing adequate light to illuminate the jobsite.

Protecting the environment is always a concern as well, not only for the environment itself but for the operator’s bottom line. Fines and clean-up costs for even the simplest oil or fuel spill can quickly claim any profit from a job.

Fluid containment systems of at least 110% of the fuel and crankcase oil in the light tower can help prevent spills, the need for clean-up and any resulting environmental damage expenses.

Overall, the safety of a jobsite is critical to its success. The opportunity to evaluate products based on their design features is the key decision point for any team. Light towers continue to be designed with ease of use and safety in mind, which will benefit the jobsite workers and any bystanders. ●

But, the foregoing assumptions are now being proven false. Fatalities and catastrophic events have remained constant or, in some places, have increased while minor injuries have continued to decline. This result is likely due to the fact that work today is increasingly complex, and failures which occur in these complex situations cannot be easily explained or understood by looking through the lens

The applicable standard of care requires, among other things, a process for review and evaluation of program effectiveness, and for taking corresponding corrective action. When a safety program comes under scrutiny, one typical argument in defense of program effectiveness is a track record of good performance data on low-level incidents (wearing personal protection, near-misses, etc.) based on the logic of the Safety Pyramid.

Employers should ensure that their safety management programs are being reviewed and audited based on actual site and work conditions... of simple tools developed for simple systems.

For this reason, there exists a systemic risk that companies may conflate consistently low, adverse-outcome numbers on low-level incidents with the adequacy of the overall safety system to control fatal or catastrophic events. Where the data indicates low-incident count, the conclusion may be that the system is working as planned (i.e., “safe”), and therefore not be subject to as intensive a review and audit as may be prudent under the circumstances.

This basic assumption underlying safety management may actually hinder risk assessment if risks are missed and not controlled because feedback indicates the system is safe. Usually, those missed risks and controls are associated with fatal and catastrophic events. Indeed, this condition may establish one root cause of process failure underlying a catastrophic event because when a catastrophic event occurs it is perceived as being “unexpected.”

Challenging the basic assumption to reduce legal exposure In the event of a safety incident, and especially a fatal or catastrophic incident, a primary legal

Diligently documenting specific processes used to identify and control the categories of catastrophic risk (e.g., fire), as well as the consistent review and evaluation of program effectiveness to control that risk, are initial steps to possibly mitigate legal exposure in the current environment. ●
