The Long Walk

“These human portraits establish a visceral empathy... ambitious and technically demanding”

WORLD PREMIERE DANCE | FILM AUSTRALIA

Sue Healey and Ken Butti

Braving hostile ports upholding Victoria’s Chinese Immigration Act of the 1850s, more than 16,000 Chinese miners sought landfall in South Australia over a century ago. From there, they travelled over 400 kilometres, making the pilgrimage to the goldfields of Victoria. Performed by Asian Australian artists on Robe's rugged and beautiful coastline, where those miners first docked, The Long Walk pays homage to their tenacity in this unique contemporary dance spectacle. Streaming online via real-time drone recording, boundary-pushing choreographer Sue Healey’s new work reveals split-second decisionmaking between drone pilot, director, musician, and performer, as dancers Kimball Wong and Julian Renlong Wong move spontaneously across the extraordinary landscape. Immediate, raw, and featuring an original score by world-renowned percussionist Ben Walsh, The Long Walk is a heartracing exploration of technology’s ability to bring people together and the courage to pursue a better life – no matter the distance.
