Community Cares Book Drive to help kids of produce workers in need. The Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association Emerging Leader Development Program is partnering with the RCMA (Redlands Christian Migrant Association) to collect new and gently used books for the children and parents working in Florida’s produce industry who receive aid from RCMA. RCMA provides quality child care and early education for children of migrant farm workers and rural, low-income families throughout Florida.

The Life Of A Party BY Stephanie Lippman, Psy.D. For many parents, parties have a way of presenting stressful situations that turn fun into fiasco. Here are suggestions to help turn stressful party scenarios into true celebrations. The Reserved or Anxious Child For children who are shy or reserved, birthday parties can be stressful, and made even worse when they are the center of attention. To help your child, involve them in the planning by asking them to create the guest list, make the goody bags, and plan activities. Choosing activities that fall within their comfort zone empowers the child and helps them know what to expect on the day of the party. Activities where they are not the center of attention, such as watching a movie, may put them at ease. Scaling down the size of the party to include family and close friends with whom the child is most comfortable, may help. Try to develop coping strategies for when being the center of attention is difficult. Suggest they focus only on the candles or you when everyone is singing happy birthday. It is important to provide the anxious child an opportunity to escape from the action. Allowing them a brief escape to calm down will help them enjoy their celebration. To help anxious children enjoy other parties, take your cues from them. If they appear to be having fun from a distance, allow them 16 February 2013 | PB Parenting |
to create their own boundaries. This is an important lesson in social and emotional growth. If they appear to want to engage more, but are unable to, ask them what they want to do and give them simple strategies for how to take the first step. If they prefer, do this with them and maybe they will feel comfortable enough to try it alone the second time. By phoning the parent of the birthday child ahead of time to ask for details, including number of guests and planned activities, you can prepare your child with the information and even role play the party in advance. Remember, a big part of childhood is social growth, and parties are one way in which children develop their social selves. The Over-Stressed Parent Parental instincts want the best for children. Getting caught up in creating the biggest or best party ever, while well intentioned, can create significant stress. The buildup is likely to leave the child feeling nervous and overwhelmed, making it difficult to enjoy their big day. It can be hard to “let go� and create a simple, but meaningful party for your child in the midst of a society that enjoys over-the-top adventures, but remember celebrating your child is what matters. Overstimulation can lead to tears, frustration, and exhaustion. Keep activities simple and enjoyable. Limit your stress by not worrying about infinite details. This reduced stress will increase your availability to help your child to relax and will provide them with the attention, care, and recognition that creates lasting memories.
