Welcome

Welcome!

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner, and I am sure the kids in your life have already started to write their wish lists!

Hopefully I can help you with that, with my handy guide to Christmas toys, and top shopping venues in our region. If you are looking for a family treat, why not enter our amazing competitions to see the Pantos in Worthing, or a family ticket to the Pavilion Ice-Rink. Also, for those train enthusiasts I may well have the ideal stocking filler (to help out Santa you will understand) with a Peter’s Railway book giveaway. I have to admit that Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year as my boys get so excited! We have developed so many rituals over the years such as scattering reindeer food, and leaving out our stockings in exactly the same place, that I am really looking forward to my older two (7 & 3 years) showing my youngest (1yr) the ropes. I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas, and a wonderful 2013. Enjoy!

Vicki

Les & Lou

Local Surrey mum of two, Lesley Hill, hopes that her new product will help take the headache out of travelling and eating out with young children. The Roll-Up Chalk Mat is a blackboard on one side, a wipe-clean placemat on the other and it rolls up to tuck into your bag neatly, ready to take everywhere with you. This clever new product for the UK is the design of Lesley and her friend Louise who have teamed up to form Les & Lou. Lesley is no stranger to business, having been a partner at a Big 4 firm in London before becoming a full-time Mum, but she admits that it’s completely different taking an idea from scratch and getting it off the ground. “It’s so exciting though, and the reward will be seeing other parents and their children getting enjoyment out of our product” sums up Lesley. There’s a special introductory offer of a chalk mat, plus chalk and free delivery for just £9.99 – perfect for Christmas! See www.lesandlou.co.uk

Need some help? Call the Maternity Consultant

There is some confusion about the difference between a maternity nurse and a maternity consultant. A maternity nurse is someone who moves into your home 24/7 for a couple of weeks [or more] after the birth of your baby. Her job is to teach you all you need to know and more about baby care; feeding, sleeping, bathing, burping. Any problems you may encounter, what to expect in the coming months, how to plan your day, in other words an intensive crash course. A good maternity nurse can give you a great start in parenthood but at a price. The Maternity Consultant aims is to offer these services in a realistic way to enable a greater number of parents to benefit from her many years of experience as a maternity nurse, nanny and proxy parent. Services offered include friendly phone consultations at a time to suit you or short visits to show you practical aspects of baby care, trouble shoot or just offer support and advice. All advice and plans are tailor made to suit you and your family’s needs. The Maternity Consultant helps you develop your own natural parenting skills and build your confidence in being a “good enough” parent. Whether you are unsure of what you really need to buy for your expected baby, are trying to cope in the early newborn weeks or struggling with a toddler call The Maternity Consultant.www.thematernityconsultant.com or franh_b@btinternet.com

NCT Lewes & Countryside Branch is pleased to announce that we have a new Fathers group in Lewes. Aptly named “Blokes and Babies” – Dads in the Lewes and local area who may not have heard about this new group are encouraged to come and join the ever expanding group of Dads who meet every Saturday morning at 9am at the Buttercup Cafe in Lewes. It gives Dads the opportunity to get the babies and toddlers out of Mums hair for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. The usual format is to meet and have a drink and then take a walk to one of the local parks but this does vary depending on what everyone would like to do. It’s a free group and you don’t have to be an NCT member to attend.

Save our Park!

Concerned villagers from Plumpton Green are pulling out the stops to raise money to save their local play park and sports pavilion. Plumpton’s King George V Pavilion is dangerously run down and is in need of serious renovation or rebuilding. At present it is home to the village’s pre-School, cricket and football clubs and, during the school holidays it houses thechildren’s holiday activity club. Throughout the year it provides an invaluable base for community meetings and get togethers and the village sees it as a much needed and valued local resource. Plumpton, as a rural community, misses out on local and central government funding and so residents are fighting to do everything they can to ensure these facilities are allowed to remain at the heart of the community. The first fundraising event is a Charity Christmas Ball and Casino at Plumpton Village Hall on Saturday 1st December. Call Becky on 01273 891534 for more information.

Learning a second language… the earlier, the better! by Meritxell Franco at Buenos Dias

Adults who learnt a second language (or at least tried!!) know how difficult it is. It takes considerable time and effort and sadly the results are not always as expected. Younger children however are able to learn languages effortlessly. There is scientific evidence that children who are exposed to a second language from an early age not only achieve much better results in languages, but also in maths, science and music, and helps in general to build brain power and cognitive skills A very common question amongst parents is “What is the ideal age for my child to start learning a second language? The answer is simple...the earlier the better!! Buenos Dias baby and pre-school classes are fun all the way with interactive games, action songs, puppets and storytelling, in a vibrant and gently-focused atmosphere. Children learn nursery rhymes, counting, and even introducing themselves in Spanish… and they are not even 2 years old! It’s very rewarding to see young children progressing week after week… even mums and dads get actively involved and learn too! Comments from parents attending our pre-school Spanish classes below : • Mia started her classes and within two sessions could count to ten in Spanish. It’s amazing how quickly they learn and how much they want to learn.” (Mia’s mum) • “We’ve been attending Buenos Dias Spanish classes since Eva was 6 months old – she’s now 4 and still loves going. Highly recommended!“ (R Deane) Since 2003 Buenos Dias has been the leading Spanish language provider in Brighton & Hove with classes at nurseries, under 5’s classes, After school clubs, Saturday Fun Clubs, Adult courses and Ofsted registered childcare. Come and see what the fuss is all about. Book your FREE trial session at our baby & toddler classes. Call 01273 323431 or visit our website www.buenosdias.co.uk for more details.

Peter Andre, Caroline Quentin, Ian Kelsey, Charlie Brooks, and Disney casting director Daniel Harding are just some of the celebrities lined up as tutors at The Pop School and Stage Academy, which launched in Brighton and Hove in September. Their mission: to create an elite group of young performers ready for the world of music and show business. Choosing the best school for your child

by Vicki Hoarty Deciding on a school is an exciting and sometimes daunting process for parents photo by Loveheart Photography and children alike. It is a big step in children’s lives and it is important that you make well informed decisions about the school your child is going to attend. For some families this decision is being made for the first time, but for others, they are making the decision about the transition to either middle school or secondary school. I like many of you will be choosing a Primary School for my son for September 2013. Here are a few guidelines to help you make that all important decision. Step 1 : You should receive notification that the admissions booklet is available online (Information for both East and West Sussex should have been distributed by now for September 2013 start) Step 2: Contact schools for a visit; look at school websites; obtain schools prospectuses; review OfSTED reports/performance data. If you can, take your child with you to see if they like the school. A top tip I once heard is to visit the school in an informal way if possible, for example, join a friend on the school run or go to their Christmas Fair. Many schools hold open evenings, and / or Open days. Open days are highly recommended as you can see the pupils working, and can get a real feel for the working atmosphere and school ethos. Step 3: Send in your application when you’ve decided which schools you prefer (either a paper form or online) You can name up to 3 schools. Co-ordination begins between Admission Authorities. All applications are considered equally against the relevant admission criteria. Step 4: Await the decision. If your first choice is accepted CONGRATULATIONS! If you wish to appeal please check your local authority for the appeal process. Key Dates: East & West Sussex Primary /Infant and Middle Schools Applications by 15th January 2013, Allocation Day 19th April 2013 East & West Sussex Secondary Schools Applications by 31st October 2012, Allocation Day 1st March 2013 The guidelines outlined in this article are for applications to state schools. If you are applying for a Church Aided school, you may need to complete a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) supplied in your application booklet. To apply to a Special School for children with specific educational difficulties, application can only be made once a statutory assessment of your child’s needs have been made. To apply to Independent schools, please contact the school directly.

Windlesham School

in Dyke Road remains one of Brighton’s least advertised independent schools, with much of the new intake resulting from recommendations. This thriving School offers an industrious learning environment where excellent academic results are achieved within a setting that provides superb pastoral care for boys and girls aged 3 to 11 years.

The Nursery department is situated in the main part of the School and the children who attend benefit from an excellent adult to child ratio. Children in Reception and the Lower School have French, ICT, music and swimming with specialist teachers whilst older children are taught by specialist teachers in all subject areas. Music is a strong tradition at the School and all children learn to read music, with a variety of choirs performing to a very high standard. The performing arts are further embraced with the children taking part in plays and concerts, enjoying on-site visits by theatre groups and visiting venues such as the Globe Theatre and Glyndebourne Opera. With a thriving Sports department, the School enjoys a local reputation for excelling at swimming tournaments and the children always look forward to their weekly lesson in the beautiful pool with its viewing gallery. A range of after-school clubs are on offer and parents who wish to drop their children off before the start of the official school day can use the ‘Early Hall’ facility where children are supervised until they go to their classroom. Windlesham is not a ‘feeder’ school to any particular group of schools. We prepare our children to move on as confident and caring children to any one of many independent and state schools. The School is once again celebrating the breadth of scholarships and awards to independent schools that were offered to Year 6 children who left us in July of this year. We are extremely proud of our children and the reputation of Windlesham School within the community. If you would like to visit the School please telephone 01273 553645 to make an appointment to visit us or come along to our Open Morning on Saturday 3rd November .

Christmas Cooking

9

Getting Funky and Festive Here at Funky Lunch, we love this festive time of the year. Christmas Holidays means we get to stay at home and amuse the children, and the best place for that is in the kitchen. On wet and cold days, nothing beats setting up camp in the kitchen and having some fun. Getting children involved in food preparation at an early age teaches them independence in the kitchen as they get older and the confidence to use and try different ingredients. Funky Lunch sandwiches are the best place to start and the colours of Christmas can be found in the greens and reds of cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. Cut lunchtime sandwiches into the shape of a Christmas tree and then let them decorate it with colourful salad vegetables. Peel thin strips of carrot to use as tinsel and then use a small circular cutter to create some small baubles of red and yellow pepper. Younger children can then place the ingredients on their tree sandwich, but encourage older ones to cut and peel for themselves. If they don’t like eating the vegetables that they’ve used on their sandwiches the first time, don’t worry, it’s just a fun exercise. The more they use different ingredients and become comfortable with them, the more likely they are to try them at a later date. If you demand they eat the red pepper they have used on their sandwich the first time they make it, you can be sure they’ll never put it on their plate again. Eat the pieces they don’t eat, so that they know their creative work is being appreciated and say how nice they are. You might just be surprised the next time the red pepper comes out. Funky Lunch is all about giving children the chance to be creative and to feed their imagination, have fun and enjoy what they eat.

This year we’ve chosen toys we’d buy ourselves, either because they offer great play value, develop creativity or physical play or because they are made of reusable material. With a recession on, choosing toys that will last enough to be handed down is a wise move too. Most toys can be ordered from your local toyshops, who always provide great advice too if you are not sure about what to buy. Enjoy.

12 Olympic Legacy

The Olympic Legacy in Sussex What Great Summer of Sport?

by Paul Clarke

Children and parents have already forgotten about the Olympic gold medals, Tour de France victory and US Open tennis grand slam win. We have slipped easily back into the obsession about the scandals of overpaid prima donnas; the back stabbing text, wage demands and grown men unprepared to shake each other’s hand.

These petty acts would have been unthinkable during the summer, so why are we only talking about the negatives in sport before the sweat has dried from Usain Bolt’s brow? We should be inspiring a generation ofexcited youngsters to take up triathlon, join an athletics club or pick up a basketball. The only diving they should be copying is those of Tom Daley not those of Premiership footballers During the summer the media sang the praises of the physical endeavours of our Olympic and Paralympic heroes. Radio phone-ins were inundated with parents saying that they would be calling sports clubs so little Harry could emulate Mo Farah. It was refreshing to read about the Brits on top of the podium as well as the near misses, the bravery of every competitor. But the glory has gone now the nights have drawn in. “You grumpy old thing” I hear your cry, (I hope that is what you are crying) “We are better than that. We want a legacy, we still love handball!” If positive sport is what you are after then read on... Sport clubs up and down the country are working hard to make sure they are providing inspirational activities for children. One such club is Sport Academies, who run fun, safe and active sport camps for 3-13 year olds across the UK. The idea has always been to give children lots of different sport experiences at the best school venues with the best coaches. There are two different programmes; Tiny Tots Sport Academies for aspiring Jess Ennis’s is a morning camp for 3-5s where children get to try lots of sports like martial arts, yoga, tennis and rugby in an exciting, playful environment. For the older boys and girls who want to get more coaching in lots of other sports, there is Sport Academies. The camp runs all day, which is great for working parents, and children play three sports on a morning and then have the choice of which sport they receive expert coaching in during the afternoon. “I played football, fencing and judo this morning and had a two hour tennis lesson after lunch”, said one youngster at the end of an action packed day at the Harrow School Sport Academies. The Sport Academies coaches follow a curriculum packed with Olympic sports and the children are treated to sessions from visiting specialist coaches. It is the sort of place sports mad youngsters dream of. They play loads of sport with cool coaches at amazing sports facilities; it’s like being a member of Team GB! Let’s give our kids the chance to play lots of sport and be inspired, rather than be held back by the boring doom and gloom at the start of the football season. Paul Clarke is Managing Director of Sport Academies and is a huge football fan. Sport Academies take place every school holiday at Brighton College, Ardingly College Haywards Heath, Harrow School, King’s House School Richmond, King’s House Sports Ground Chiswick, University College School Hampstead,St George’s College Weybridge & Leicester Grammar School.

After such an amazing Summer of Sport, has the Olympics had an impact on the sporting interests of your child? Four companies who feel very passionately about young people getting active in Sussex have given me their ideas on what the Summer of Sport has really brought to our children.

Vicki Bates from the little swim school tells you

why swimming should be our Olympic legacy.

For me living by the sea in Brighton, safety has to be the first and foremost reason for teaching your little one to swim. A recent American report found drowning to be the highest cause of accidental death in children from 1 to 5 and we are not far behind here in the UK. Even though most children will not swim unaided until they are between 3 and 4, you can start infant water safety programmes like Little Dippers from birth and good pre-school lessons teach water safety as well as swimming skills. If you can’t find or afford local lessons, you can take your little one to the local pool and introduce them to swimming that way – there are some great pool game ideas on the government’s ‘get active’ website. Talking of getting active, fitness is another important reason – we don’t have to aim quite as high as the Olympians but it has been shown time and time again that swimming is one of the best all round exercises. With childhood obesity on the rise, I think it’s key to start our children with physically active hobbies when they are young - as well as benefiting from the activity now, this builds healthy habits for later life: my daughter started swimming at Little Dippers at 3 months and now at 11, swims in the Wet Wet Wet squad – as well as giving her a tough hour long weekly workout (I can’t keep up with her) it is invaluable for her spine as we have since discovered she has mild scoliosis. One of the reasons swimming is such a good form of exercise is the support that the water gives - it enables children who have problems like muscle weakness and other conditions and aren’t able to do many other physical activities, the opportunity to exercise. Spending special one to one time with your little one is my third, key reason to take your child to lessons or for a dip in your local pool. In the chaotic lives we now lead it can be hard to find half an hour with no phones, disturbances, jobs to do or interruptions from anywhere – this really was one of the best things about taking my children to pre-school swimming – I have to watch poolside now and although I am look on being the proud mother, it’s not the same! So go on, teach your little one a life-saving skill that can help keep them fit and give you some precious one-to one time – teach them to swim! For more information about the little swim school, please call 01273 207992 visit www.thelittleswimschool.co.uk

Olympic Legacy (Written by Debbie Webb from Activ8 For Kids)

The term ‘legacy’ has been used frequently when talking about London 2012, but what does this actually mean? Having been involved in London 2012 as a games maker and as a coordinator of many Olympic inspired events within local schools I have seen the makings of this legacy.

Children of all ages and adults have been enthused and excited by the Olympics and Paralympics….on the edges of their seats watching GB athletes win medals, break records and push themselves harder than ever before. This has changed people’s attitudes towards sport; already many sports clubs are talking of a much larger interest and demand for places. The term ‘legacy’ refers to the lasting effects after an event has finished; how it is remembered and its values sustained. However, the legacy started 4 years before London 2012 at the handover ceremony in Beijing. Schools were encouraged to join the ‘Get Set’ Network and there begun a journey of discovery involving cultural awareness, recognition of the diverse range of sports and increased participation in physical activity. So how can the legacy affect you and your child? The London Organising Committee talk of ‘inspiring a generation’ and this is exactly how the legacy will be continued. There may be one particular sport or athlete you or your children became interested in or maybe there were a variety of events you watched and enjoyed. We need to continue that enjoyment; find a local hockey match, a swimming gala or an athletics meet to watch. These events show children that they can succeed in sport and give them good role models to aspire to. As parents we need to encourage our children to enjoy a range of physical activities. Find an activity group they are interested in and if they are not too keen on a specific sport find a multi sports activity group that teaches a range of physical skills and aims to foster a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. For Pre-school children take them along to a physical skills group where they will learn a range of fundamental movement skills and will grow in self-confidence. Activ8 For Kids is one group which provides opportunities for children to be physically active, developing the 3 main skill areas of action, balance and coordination. The sessions are carefully planned and structured by an experienced head of PE and writer of school PE schemes. All children will develop the building blocks needed for future involvement in sport and activity, and improve their self-esteem and confidence. See the main advert for more information. The legacy will be continued by this generation of children growing up enjoying sport and physical activity and having a positive attitude to health and fitness. This will then in turn pass to the next generation….what greater legacy can we ask for?

Our Olympic Legacy. by Sally Roberts

It goes without saying that we have all enjoyed a fantastic summer of sport, but what happens now?

At Bee-fit we are keen to embrace the Olympic legacy and the belief that more children should be able to get involved in sport at all levels. Bee-fit have been providing fun fitness programmes for young children since 2004. We have always believed that early intervention really does benefit children in later life. This has now been recognised in the latest research resulting in a revision of the Early Years curriculum. At Bee-fit children are encouraged to share equipment, follow instructions and explore climbing, jumping, balancing and running in a safe and controlled environment. Children gain new skills, confidence and greater self esteem, while having fun. We have seen many children grow and go onto attain great sporting achievements, prompting our celebration of the Bee-fit legacy this month We were very pleased to have a gathering of past and present customers, many of the children now competing at County and National level, in a whole range of sports. We believe that all the children leave with many of the tools they need to reach their own potential whatever that maybe. Our classes provide a vital stepping stone to prepare children for their school life and beyond. We are proud that our legacy has already reached through many families, with Bee-fit becoming a traditional part of their children’s early life. With the forthcoming Commonwealth games our hope is that any lavish funding for elite athletes will be matched by funds to promote a wider participation in sport for everyone. Through Bee-fit we hope to carry on inspiring young people to take part in sport, leading to active healthy lifestyles. If you would like more information about Bee-fit or where to find our classes visit www.Bee-fit.co.uk

Skiing Top Tips

Top Tips for Family Skiing Holidays

Paul and Francesca Ayres moved to Morzine 18 years ago, started a family ski company ChillyPowder, and had 3 children. We asked them to tell us about the most important things you should consider when taking your family on a ski holiday. Don’t rush to high altitude resorts because children can sometimes get altitude sickness. It’s also unsafe for babies under the age of 1 to go up in high cable cars because of the air pressure. Finding a resort with an easy, short airport transfer will be a blessing! Also check that your airport transfer company is properly licensed and has the child car seats you’ll need. While your on your transfer vehicle from the airport to your holiday accommodation, try to sit as near to the front of the bus as possible then there’s less chance of the windy roads making your childrensick. It’s pointless wasting money on expensive ski clothes for your children - they’ll only outgrow them by next year! Borrow what you can from friends or try TK Maxx in September and October! If your children are attending ski school or childcare, make sure you sew their names in to their clothes so they don’t get mixed up with others. If you’re taking a pushchair to use during your holiday, take one with large wheels. Standard chairs will be impossible to push in the snow but it might be that your holiday company has a stash of them for you to borrow. Don’t forget that sun block is just as important on a winter holiday as it is in the summer. Take sun block rather than spray so that you don’t have to take your gloves off to rub it in! For more details about Chilly Powder see www.chillypowder.com

The Sea Life Centre has recently reopened its doors, following a refurbishment completely restoring it to its former Victorian glory. The old tired paintwork has all gone, revealing beautiful original brickwork throughout the Victorian Arcade. The Arcade itself seems brighter and more airy, and the tanks seem to be in much better condition. Children can still follow the Factfinder Trail where they can follow the clues to scratch out the correct answer. The questions are fairly challenging and offer two age levels, making the prize of a medal and 10% off in the gift very rewarding. The highlight for most is the Ocean tunnel, where you are surrounded by sharks, a variety of fish and the largest inhabitant of the Brighton Sea Life Centre, Lulu the giant sea turtle. For those of you who want to get just that bit closer you can by observing this large tank from above on the UK’s first glass-bottom boat (for an extra fee)The Sea Life Centre regularly changes its exhibits and this reopening brings with it the brand new Jellyfish Discovery. Housed where the Submarine Adventure formerly was, the Jellyfish Discovery takes you through interactive displays outlining the life and traits of different jellyfish, before you are surrounded by floor to ceiling tubular tanks displaying the mesmerising jellyfish. The Sea Life Centre still remains one of the best days out in Sussex, and with the weather getting colder it is a nice indoor option. Over Christmas the Brighton Sea Life Centre is holding a Christmas Tree Festival They are appealing to local businesses to put up a Christmas Tree in the centre which they will decorate. Each tree will have a collection box for a chosen charity, and each visitor will be able to give a free token to the charity tree of their choice. Half the proceeds will go to the selected relevant charity, and the other half goes to Merlin’s Magic Wand. For dates and details please visit www.sealife.co.uk
