SOC 490 Independent Field Work as part of their sociology major. Students are also strongly advised to develop some competence in the use of computer. CS 111 Introduction to Software Applications and Digital Technology covers basic concepts in computer science and digital technology. Students should also consider taking COM 315 Intercultural Communication, completing a minor in intercultural studies, and studying Spanish to increase their opportunities in the labor market.

Major in Sociology with a Concentration in Criminology

The concentration in criminology is an option for sociology majors who are interested in careers in law, crime research, law enforcement, prevention, corrections and criminal or juvenile casework. Students enrolled as sociology majors will combine sociology with conceptual and practical experiences in criminology, preparing them for graduate work or direct entry into the field. Students may also combine the criminology concentration with a major or minor in another discipline such as business, criminal justice, intercultural studies, political science, psychology or urban studies. An individualized program will be set up to meet the particular interests and career goals of each student. The recommended concentration courses are: SOC 301 Social Problems (fall of junior year) SOC/CJ 319 Juvenile Delinquency and the Justice System (fall of senior year) SOC/CJ 408 Criminology (spring of junior year) SOC 490 Independent Field Work (senior year) Students should consult with sociology

Social Intervention SOC 301 Social Problems SOC/CJ 319 Juvenile Delinquency and the Justice System SOC/CJ 408 Criminology A student may submit one credit of independent study, SOC 491 or 492 and one credit of field experience, SOC 490 toward the sociology major if taken for a letter grade. Majors seeking a bachelor of science degree, rather than a bachelor of arts degree, must take any two mathematics courses offered by the Department of Mathematics except MTH 325, 326, 440 and 441. Students pursuing both a sociology major and a social work minor may apply only SOC 211 toward both the major and minor. At least four of the eight required sociology courses must be taken at Elmhurst College. Courses in sociology and social work may be accepted in transfer from other colleges.
