It’s time to come out as the loving souls that we are from the editor by Tim Miejan
O
ne can only admire Lake Harriet Spiritual Community’s effort to rebrand itself as the “Center for Conscious Living” for the Twin Cities [see interview on page 12]. Of course, it always was so, but who really knew? This move will not only focus LHSC internally to create events that attract a consciousseeking, mainstream public, but it will help remove whatever mystique may have prevented people from visiting the community before now. As much as they may pride themselves for being open and accepting, holistic groups tend to speak a language that is not always understood by new arrivals, and newcomers may feel intimidated by the tight-knit clan already in place. And individually, many holistic types don’t like to make waves. They are sensitive to criticism and judgment, so they tend to keep to themselves and avoid setting themselves up to be burned at the stake. The fear of reaction is what stops many of us from stepping out of the closet and allowing the full expression of our souls to be seen. The key is knowing that the public is seeking a more holistic way of life – through spirituality, healing, natural products, and a natural perspective in this all-too processed world. The key is collaboration, exactly what Lake Harriet and other groups are doing. By partnering with more mainstream neighbors, it allows groups to embrace values they share in common. Seek ways for everyone to come out a winner. Collaboration [read another example on page 25] is the key to the evolution of consciousness in the 21st century. a Tim Miejan is editor & co-publisher of Edge magazine. Max the Crystal Skull Returns to Minnesota
M
ax the Crystal Skull, one of only two crystal skulls still believed to be ancient – reportedly 36,000 years old – returns to the Twin Cities for a rare public appearance during the last weekend of September. The rare skull was found in Guatemala and was given by indigenous healers to a Buddhist lama healer and later taken to Houston, Texas. Before the lama died, he gave the crystal skull to Jo Ann Parks, whom he had befriended after treating her daughter. Many people who have had contact with Max have received remarkable advice and healings. At 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, Jo Ann Parks will give a public presentation on Max the Crystal Skull at the Hilton Garden Inn, near I-494 and Bass Lake Road in Maple Grove. Mrs. Parks, an entertaining Texas lady in her own right, will discuss crystal skulls and tell how she received Max and kept him in a closet until he started hollering at her. The cost for the presentation is $25. Attendees will have an opportunity to briefly touch Max at the end of the evening. There will be limited time for private meditations with Max during the weekend. Registration for private time with Max begins August 15. To register, or for more information, contact Dale or Sheryl Fisher at 763.420.9017. a

Singers Deva Premal & Miten, with Manose coming to Cities
D
eva Premal and Miten, world-renowned singers of sacred, contemporary music, will visit the Twin Cities for the first time as part of a 25-city U.S. tour in support of their new album, Password, which marks a new direction in their unique blending of East and West, embedding the energy carried by ancient mantras into a rich fusion of sound and silence. Password features Manose, a bansuri flute maestro from Nepal. “An Evening with Deva Premal & Miten with Manose” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, presented by Raising the Consciousness, the radio show for conscious living. Get tickets at www.raisingtheconsciousness. com and at the door for $35, and VIP seats (the first four rows) are $55. Deva Premal and Miten began their journey into love and music in 1990 when they met at an ashram in India. They have spent the last 21 years introducing millions of Westerners to the beauty and power of Sanskrit mantras. As Deva expresses it, “Mantras are passwords that transform the mundane into the sacred.” Deva and Miten created the mantra genre with the release of The Essence in 1998. Since then they have released ten albums, all of which topped New Age and Amazon.com charts worldwide. For more information, visit www.RaisingtheConsciousness. com or call Keith at 612.741.4982. a

HOLISTIC LIVING
he Poetics of Receptivity,” a profound, soul-pounding commentary on feminine power and receptive wisdom, will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 at the Carondelet Center in St. Paul, featuring author and spiritual teacher Dr. Christina Donnell, accompanied by cellist, Dr. Anna Vazquez. The event will take place in Room G-1, and the suggested donation is $10. The stirring combination of Christina Donnell’s lyrical prose style and her transmission of the unseen, with the authentic virtuosity of cellist Anna Vazquez, promise to carry the audience to an imaginary plane seldom experienced in our culture. “This will be an evening to remember,” promises the sponsoring Winds of Change Association. Christina Donnell, Ph.D., is the author of the five time award-winning book, Transcendent Dreaming. She spent more than two decades studying Eastern traditions and the shamanic energy practices of the Q’ero Indians of Peru, which helped her to awaken a form of dreaming that expands consciousness and allows the dreamer to identify with the intelligence that animates the universe. Anna Vazquez, D.MA, is a classically trained cellist who has explored where music, spirituality and healing overlap. She has a Doctorate of Music from the University of Minnesota. Kundalini master Chrism to lecture, teach seminar
C
hrism, a spiritual master who awakens kundalini in groups of people safely, will lecture and present a weekend seminar in September in the Twin Cities. Kundalini is an evolutionary energy that is designed for humanity’s next step toward a luminous physical and spiritual expression. Chrism notes that kundalini is in everyone, and that it is an untapped resource of divinity within us all that is waiting to be awakened and experienced. Chrism, a native of California, offers the awakening of kundalini as well as continued support throughout the kundalini awakening experience. Chrism comes from a place of disciplined love and disciplined intention within the parameters of forgiveness, spiritual balance, service to others and spiritual evolution. Kundalini, as it expresses through Chrism, is the teacher. “Never has the time been so right and crucial for a change of this magnitude to be explored and initiated,” Chrism says. “Kundalini is a belief system, a physical practice, and an overt action upon the body. It is a condition and a force of union that is tactile in its expression upon the individual.” Chrism will be offering a lecture on Friday, Sept. 16, at The Healing Loft in Minneapolis, and a weekend seminar on September 17-18 in New Brighton, MN. Event aligns sexuality with the heart, light of the self
T
he Sexual Alignment Process, intended to assist people in aligning their sexuality with your heart and the Light of the Self, is a series of light initiations that take place over the course of two and a half days – September 16-18 – in the Twin Cities. Each initiation is connected to and builds on the previous one. This opens flow through the light bodies and physical body and allows for resurrection and rejuvenation energies to be fed throughout the body. The initiations work in the areas of the heart, spine, neck, head and the entire body, opening an illumination point in the back of the skull. The process works with the male and female alignment within the individual, as well as creative expression and Unity consciousness. This work is useful for people who have suffered sexual abuse in this or past lifetimes, and people who have “let go” of their personal power due to this life or past-life experiences. People with spinal injury and or disease and all people on their journey to the enlightened state can use this work to accelerate spiritual growth. For more info and registration, call Joanne at 651.452.2895, email wakefieldjfob@gmail. com or visit wayshowerj.com. a
Laughing along the spiritual path by Connie Gundy
W
hat’s funny about spirituality? Having studied metaphysics since 1982, it’s become clear to me that it’s all a cosmic joke. As a matter of fact, I’ve been reminded from the other side that the first thing we hear when we leave these bodies is laughter. The spirit realm, at least the flow that I’m from, sees it as hilarious that we are brilliantly powerful spirits, hiding behind veils of unworthiness, guilt, doubt and fear, groveling like chickens, when we’re capable of soaring like eagles. My first spiritual teacher, Alan Cohen, wrote, A Dragon Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. It was my bible for many years. As I would fall into my “stinkin’ thinkin,” I could let the text fall open and it would remind me that in this moment I have everything I need. In ’99, I began seeking truths through channelings. I wasn’t totally willing to trust my own intuitive knowings, yet at the same time, I was tired of paying egos to tell me to do it their way. Being a loyal follower, Abraham-Hicks repeatedly reminded me that “we can’t get it wrong and never get it done, so why not be easy about it?” They also shared funny stories about how Esther, the channeler, would create temporary struggle and misery. I’ve been crying rivers of tears since mental pause hit and I’m now ready to laugh. Becoming a professor of Laughter Yoga has convinced me of the major physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of releasing resistance through laughter. It’s not mandatory to make strange faces at each other in order to do so, however. People have laughed at me this whole incarnation. Unfortunately, I took them personally, becoming indignant about how nobody will ever take me seriously. I now know that I speak from my heart, which is foreign to most humans. Besides that, this compassionate universe provides me with endless humor every day. For instance, when I began speaking about this idea on Facebook, a representative from a “spiritual” organization responded with, “Let’s talk about this for our facility.” I informed her that a friend and I had indeed attempted that last fall and were met with much resistance. My inner Pollyanna couldn’t leave it at that, so I emailed, asking to go for coffee and laugh about starting one there. The reply I received was, “I’m way too busy to consider anything like that.” It’s funny! I consider myself a graduate of the “school of hard knocks.” Most “spiritual” institutions are still cerebral, totally missing the boat about how we’re One Tribe with all that we need in our heart of hearts. The frosting on the cake is that Hanakia Zedek likes the idea. I’ve been wanting to create together for years. For me it’s like the cereal commercial, ”Hey Mikey, he likes it.” He and I will be at the Living Waters Cafe, laughing over a delicious, organic meal from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12. Consider joining us. a Connie Gundy is a spiritual teacher, healing minister and laughter coach, with a background in nursing and addiction counseling. envisioning anew
Center for Conscious Living An interview on the renewed vision of Lake Harriet Spiritual Community with Theresa Rose by Tim Miejan
M
INNEAPOLIS — The names have changed, but the energy beneath the dome at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community remains just as refreshing and awakening as ever. It inspires people to reconnect with their true nature, go beyond what they thought was possible and embody the soul that yearns to be expressed. The energy here inspires change — perhaps the only constant in the community’s 23-year history in the landmark church building at 44th and Upton Avenue South in Linden Hills. Sitting high in the neighborhood, towering over the shopping district to the north and the tree-lined homes leading down to the banks of Lake Harriet to the east, the silver-domed structure is home to one of the nation’s most vibrant spiritual communities. And while many inspiring speakers, worship leaders and members have come and gone since 1988, every transition has inspired the community to evolve into a new expression of what is now. One senses when speaking to current leaders that Lake Harriet Spiritual Community (LHSC) is in a completely new space, one that it has never been in before. It as if this collection of eclectic souls is coming out of the closet to its city, fully accepting of itself for who it is and no longer afraid to be judged for being different by its neighborhood. New spiritual director Theresa Rose – an ordained minister, national motivational humorist, award-winning author of Opening the Kimono: A Woman’s Intimate Journey Through Life’s Biggest Challenges, wife and mother — acknowledges that the LHSC is relaxed as it embarks upon a new path of integrating with its more

mainstream neighbors by recognizing their shared values of seeking a balance of body, mind and spirit. “We’ve changed our tagline to A Center for Conscious Living,” she says, “and we really want to create Lake Harriet Spiritual Community as a center for Minneapolis and St. Paul to come for not only Sunday services, but for classes and workshops and concerts and movies and other performance art.” It sounds like it may be an opportunity for Lake Harriet more than ever before to announce itself and really step out into the Twin Cities community as a whole. Theresa Rose: That’s exactly right, and that is our inten-
tion. We not only want to introduce ourselves to the larger communities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, but we also especially want to extend our hands out to our community in Linden Hills. Those are the people who hear the concerts coming out of the sanctuary, and they’re the ones who come to yoga classes, and they’re the ones who walk to our Sunday services.
We really want to be more integrated with our neighbors in the Lake Harriet area. Connection to our community is good. We want to support members of our community who can walk to where we are and whose businesses we support locally. So, it’s a real synergistic relationship we’re trying to create with our local neighbors. What is your vision of a Center for Conscious Living? TR: It is a gathering place where we offer services, classes
and special events that support one’s personal spiritual growth. Anything related to consciousness, anything about increasing our own awareness of our power and developing a spiritual relationship with the Divine – walking on this Earth with a light footprint. We don’t want people to just merely see us as a church. Sunday service is just a small portion of what we’re offering, and we’re continuing to expand. For example, we are having Gina Citoli come in September for a fundraiser for LHSC and present her Cabaret of Consciousness, a concert that we’re going to be sponsoring with her. And we’re very excited about Allison Scott, who is going to be here on October 13 to do a fundraiser for us. Allison is a phenomenal singer who is starting to really make a name for herself in the Twin Cities music scene. She has been identified as one of the up-and-coming musical artists and has a really large following. She is a soulful singer who plays at the Dakota and at festivals. She has been a musical guest at one of my Sunday services, and we’re fortunate to be able to have her come for an entire concert. We hope that new people can come see LHSC as the result of their connection to Allison. I encourage everyone to check her out. She is really, really wonderful. Our goal is to build our presence in the community by bringing in events and offerings like this to appeal to wider audiences.
Is there a reorganization of what’s already existed at Lake Harriet or are there new ideas that are being implemented into this vision? TR: Both. First of all, there is a reorganization of what
we’ve already done, but we have also endeavored to include a lot more offerings than we previously have in the past. We want to not only offer classes and services for people who are well down the path of spiritual development, but also for those who may be just beginning, opening our doors to them, as well. We’re looking at things that we haven’t looked at before, like fitness classes, nutrition classes, parenting classes, relationship classes, different things that really haven’t been happening at LHSC. I want to even bring in a hula hoop class, because that’s a great way to get in the body. We want to support the body-mind-spirit triad by looking at things we hadn’t brought in previously because we were focusing solely on metaphysical studies, whereas now we’re really expanding our vision.

Conscious Living continued from page 13 new people coming into the community — and different inspirations developed. One of our motivations is to maintain a thriving community, and to do that we really want to offer what people want. This is not an exclusive club. We want it to be an open community, a really thriving center. And so, change was something that was being called for. What is changing at Lake Harriet from a leadership perspective? TR: We have restructured the spiritual leadership at LHSC.
Previously, as you and your readers may be aware, we had ministerial guides. Those ministerial guides were elected for a period of two years and they led one Sunday service a month. There were anywhere from three to five MGs, as we called them, and then we occasionally had guest speakers. As the community has evolved and morphed, what the community decided was that it would be more effective, and ultimately more of a representation of who we are, to have one spiritual director and a group of resident speakers. Resident speakers are leaders in the spiritual community nationally who were not able to commit to once-a-month services as a typical ministerial guide and did not want to be too terribly involved in the day-to-day operations of the community. We have selected four of our six resident speakers so far, and they are going to be doing services on a quarterly basis. They include: noted jazz vocalist and radio personality Patty Peterson; spiritual teacher, healer and Pleiadian channel Christine Day; intuitive, author and “Michael” channel Linda Elwell; and intuitive counselor Cindi Claypatch. All of these people come from a different perspective, from their own unique perspective, from a spiritual development perspective, and from a consciousness perspective, but they all are in such harmony with the energy of LHSC and they all bring a unique voice. That’s what we’re really excited about, that they’re going to be here on a regular basis and be able to provide that sort of leadership to us. And then, we’re going to continue to have guest speakers once every month. We’ve had such notable guest speakers as Leonard Jacobson and Kathryn Harwig, and all sorts of different people from different realms have shared their expertise with us, and we encourage differences. We

want to see lots of different voices and we want to hear from these amazing teachers who can share with us their own guidance, their own messaging. What is the value for somebody to become part of this spiritual community? TR: I think the value lies in the welcoming, nurturing
community that we offer. It’s more than just a beautiful building and more than just a calendar of events. We are really creating a spiritual family, a spiritual community that can provide all of those tools that we need to traverse this world and to get through the challenges that we face. The value is helping you move into a greater place of joy and health and connectivity to the Divine. That’s what we offer. Maybe for some it is just about entertainment. So if you want to see wonderful music being played through joyful hearts, that’s what we offer, too. Everyone is looking for something different, but our goal is to provide that sense of home — a spiritual home for people.
What will a first-time visitor experience at a Sunday service at Lake Harriet? TR: They will experience a morning full of inspiration and
music, meditation, fellowship, community and lightness. That’s the through line of every single Sunday service, whether it’s me who is delivering the service or one of our resident or guest speakers. Each week will be completely different, but visitors will get some nugget of what they can do to move in this world with more grace and more connection and more power. They’ll hear from lots of different sources on how to do that. The community is building and it’s very loving, and I’m really excited about how we are all becoming the best of who we are as individuals and as a community. We’re really rising above a lot of fear and really stepping into our power more fully, both as individuals and as a community. It’s a really beautiful thing to be witnessing, and I’m really just privileged to be a part of this. a For more information, visit www.lakeharrietspiritualcommunity. org or search for Lake Harriet Spiritual Community on Facebook. HOLISTIC LIVING
moving forward: newly empowered by D.K. Brainard
W
e’re still operating under our nowfamiliar backdrop of transformation and “danger opportunities,” but with Mercury back to direct motion, at least life is moving forward again.
Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…You start the month with the same strong emphasis on work, health and your emotional state. The difference this month is that you’re starting to feel empowered to shift things. By mid-month you’re feeling creative and expansive and, dare I say, downright playful. Is it any surprise some cool new collaborators show up to play with you? Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…A creative project finally comes back on line as Mercury goes direct and activates your playful-yet-focused side. It looks like you’re working hard this month but playing hard too – just the way you like it. To keep the peace on the home front, have at least one home-based project going after the 18th when warrior planet Mars moves into your 4th House of home and family. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Lots of good news this month. Mars finally leaves your money house on the 18th, stopping the flow of unexpected expenses and re-energizing your mind. As the month goes on first Venus, then the Sun moves into your house of creativity, romance and play, bringing opportunities for creative collaboration – and some good oldfashioned fun. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Use the first half of the month to align your thoughts with what you want to create. You’re thinking more clearly this month than you have in some time. With Mars in your sign through the 18th, you’ve got a tremendous amount of drive that needs to be focused outward, preferably on career-related projects. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Money makes more sense as Mercury reenters your 2nd House in direct motion, enabling you to piece together the flashes of inspiration and partial ideas you received during the August retrograde. To top it off, Mars enters your sign on the 18th, bringing a huge amount of energy and drive you can put towards your dreams. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…September looks like the month you’ve been waiting for all year long. With your ruling planet Mercury direct in your sign, you finally get a clear picture of what the many lessons of this year were meant to teach you. You might even get some surprisingly good money news later in the month, if you’re willing to take a risk and go for what you want. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Although the emphasis on your relationships and your family/emotional space remains intense, September moves you back into the driver’s seat of your life. Plan to make a big burst after the 14th when Venus enters your sign, bringing love, luck and opportunity. Friends, net-
Star Wisdom september 2011 works and social media connections are energized after the 18th. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…You’ve been in this deep space in your mind, making sense of the last phase of your life’s journey. Now it’s time to put the wisdom you’ve gleaned into action. Your willingness to take center stage this month might shock a few people but you know you have the ability to move mountains when you’re this highly motivated. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…You finally get out from under a mountain of yucky debt or relationship energy. Even if the challenging person or circumstance remains, you’ve made your peace with it and you’re determined to move forward. Good news – Mercury direct in your career house gives you the clarity about your life and position you’ve been seeking for some time now. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)…You’re ready to start a new chapter in your life and you have the cosmic wherewithal to do just that. It’s so important to consciously detach from other people’s ideas about who you’re supposed to be and march to the beat of your own inner drummer. Nothing but your Authentic Self is going to bring you the rewards you seek. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…With a host of planets activating your 9th House, you’re receiving blasts of insight and intuition this month. These new thoughts can revolutionize your mental outlook and open up new spheres of creative possibility. It’s a good time to go back to school or start an apprenticeship with someone who has mastered one of the skills you’re trying to acquire. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Use this month to forge powerful and mutually beneficial agreements with like-minded people. You’ve got an almost overpowering desire to push your ideas forward and create more wealth and security; the best way to do this is by partnering with trustworthy, responsible people who share your goals. a Listen to “Edge Astrology with D.K. Birthing joy amidst loss, grief by Carol McCormick
A
t this time of transformation and ascension, loss and grief come to us all. They are inevitable. They are part of the cycle of life. Ignoring or stuffing our grief can have disastrous physical, emotional and spiritual repercussions. Yet, how do we deal with loss without losing ourselves in pain? How do we remain positive and hopeful when things come crashing down around our ears, when we face the deaths of people we love and lose things we care about? When we feel loss, our natural tendency is to run away to avoid the pain. We stuff ourselves with food or alcohol, medicate, ignore, stay extraordinarily busy, compartmentalize our lives, or excessively indulge in pleasure – addictively reading novels, playing computer games, social networking, consuming sweets, watching television, gambling, It’s what we’ve been taught to do, isn’t it? We’ve watched our parents, family, friends, and celebrities model such behaviors. What I share here is not just theoretical. For the past ten months I’ve been fighting in the trenches to learn coping skills in order to survive and thrive. In addition to the economic turmoil, weather craziness and natural disasters that have affected us all, I’ve had devastating personal losses: my son committed suicide, my brother-in-law died of ALS, and my father died of old age – all after they suffered heart-breaking declines. I’ve also been fired from a job I loved, and shunned by members of my spiritual community.
Steps to deal with loss and remain positive: 1. Be Genuine – Don’t ignore or cover up how you’re feeling. Acknowledge the loss and feel what is real. Let your tears flow. Seek nonviolent ways to vent your anger. Let yourself have bathrobe days. 2. Seek Healing Support – Spend time with
friends who are good listeners and are comfortable with you crying. Find support groups to help you process your grief. I joined Idisi, a women’s healing chorus. I helped start a weekly Divine Mother’s Group. I attended a Grief Workshop that was profoundly healing, sponsored by Living Waters Market and led by Dagara Elder Teri Leigh.
3. Nourish Your Body – Exercise daily. Eat
nutritious food. Spend time in nature. Take naps. Allow yourself to sleep in or stay up
HOLISTIC LIVING
late. Reduce your work load and schedule your life around your current energy level. 4. Look for Beauty – Beauty can help us
rediscover the will to live, reassure us when we’re feeling scared, and let us know that life is worth living. Beauty can heal our deepest wounds, and help us forget our problems. At least for a while. Beauty is found in nature or art, in a person as inner beauty, in common objects, or in an act of courage or kindness. A crucial aspect is to let ourselves be surprised— vulnerable, expecting nothing, and holding no preconceived idea of what is beautiful and what is not. When we perceive beauty, we are free from worry, regret or discontentment. Our fears and expectations loosen their grip. We feel happy at that moment. The Navaho language uses the word hozo, which means health, beauty, goodness, harmony and happiness, all at once. With no distinction between humans and nature, Navaho culture encourages people to walk continually amid beauty, speak in beauty, act in beauty and live in beauty. That is an example we may wish to emulate.
5. Use Imagination and Divine Love – Here’s an
exercise from the University of Spiritual Healing and Sufism newsletter: Feel and imagine that your loss is like a pebble that is being dropped into an ocean. When you hold a pebble in your hands, it feels strong and hard. When this pebble falls into the ocean, it disappears and it is no longer what you focus on. Feel the feelings of the grief, loss or sadness and put them in a larger container that can hold them with comfort: the container of Divine Love. Allow the Divine Love in and all the way through so the emotions dissolve. Then you aren’t ignoring or bypassing. Instead, you are giving the emotions the attention they are due, but no more. That’s the key. God’s container of love is the ocean that can truly hold the grief in its right size.a

Sleep naturally: Weighted blankets offer relaxation By Eileen Parker Editor’s note: Last month, Eileen Parker described her ability to find success in life, despite the challenges of autism. This month, she describes the business she created during the course of therapy for the condition.
A
t the dentist, you have probably worn the lead vest they put on your chest for X-rays. So many people say that they wish the technician would leave it on, because the weight feels so good. Maybe you have lain under an old-time country quilt with the weight of it feeling like a cocoon, and you woke up feeling refreshed after the sleep of your life. I first learned about weighted blankets at an occupational clinic where I received sensory integration therapy. After my occupational therapist, Suzy, put a type of weighted blanket on me, I felt relaxed in two to three minutes. I was so happy with the feeling, but not the type of blanket, so I designed my own, filed a patent, and launched Cozy Calm. A weighted blanket is for therapeutic sleep and relaxation, naturally. There is science behind it, but grandma has long known this without the science. The short version of how weighted blankets work is based on how it acts on the body’s sensory system. Only so many bits of sensory information can travel through the central nervous system to your brain at one time. A neurology professor explained it as akin to a mosquito bite. If you press your nail into your skin right
around the bite, the feeling of the nail pressing in overrides the pain and itchiness of the mosquito bite. So, the new sensory information of the nail in your skin crowds out the feeling of the bite going through to the brain. The rest of the science behind it is a theory that the weighted blanket causes relaxation, comfort and sleepiness based on the blanket taking over those bodily feelings. Do we need proof on how it works? I often tell people about an article I read in the Star Tribune a year or two ago about a study on sleep for school children. The study concluded that children who get a good night’s sleep perform better in school and have fewer behavioral problems, a.k.a “cranky.” Instead of spending all this money on a study, they could have asked a parent from any generation to give them the answer. The concept of weight on the body is adopted by many hospitals on units such as psychiatric, trauma, geriatric, pediatric and others, all to help the Blankets continued on page 20

patient reduce anxiety, make them feel comforted, and help them get to sleep and stay asleep. Locally, they are used at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. We make our weighted blankets heavy with a liner filled with medical-grade plastic beads sewn at intervals so the beads don’t slosh around. It is covered with a super-soft outer covering sewn to the liner. Both are made with professional grade fabric and sewn on industrial sewing machines with industrial-grade thread. In short, the blankets are high quality and made to last, even with repeat washings. The Cozy Calm weighted blankets are made here in Minnesota, and it so happens that our blankets are made at our shop in rural Minnesota primarily by people who grew up in the country learning sewing at an early age. Our lead sewer, Sandy, has over 20 years of experience working in professional sewing shops, so yes, she knows sewing, but she also knows about fabrics, trims and so many other factors that go into the sewing industry. The rest is hard work, as every business is, but we are highly motivated by the emails from customers telling us how they have finally slept, which is why sleep is the number one reason that people buy our blankets. At the shop, the sewers keep a binder of these customer emails and phone calls so they can feel connected to the customer and know how much good they do for others by sewing for them. a Eileen Parker frequently is in the media talking about autism. She owns Cozy Calm, a weighted blanket company at www.CozyCalm. com. Contact her at AtYourService@ cozycalm.com or at 763.533.6125. Read her blog, “Inside the Autism Experience,” at www. His former dental hygienist, Bette Jo Arnett, has just released a book, Wholeistic Dentistry: Balancing Conventional Dental Care with Ancient Wisdom, which looks at conventional and holistic dentistry. It is dedicated to Dr. King, her employer for 17 years.
I
see the prevention of integration of holistic concepts into dentistry to be a result of the historical customs of the American Dental Association (ADA) and the shaping of individual dentists to do as they must in order to keep their licenses and make their livings. It is easier to go along with the system than oppose it with other observations and beliefs. For if dentists explore possibilities contrary to ADA expectations and what they learn makes sense, they would be compelled to make decisions to take action and integrate these changes into their practices. But it is easier to stay in a familiar place than move into the unfamiliar. For 150 years, the ADA has denied that amalgams, silver fillings containing mercury, are harmful. The reason, I believe, is multifaceted: Economics – To admit that amalgams have harmed patients might lead to the financial ruin of the member dentists and to their authority. Patients might feel victimized by the power of the institution and may demand reparations. Dentists may be accused of being greedy and closed-minded. Ethics – Dentists would have to admit they violated their ethical code to do no harm. It is easier to stay in the safety zone of conventional practice than to risk disturbing one’s conscience. Psychology – To admit harm would mean that dentists would need to change their entire belief system, revising and reestablishing relationships with colleagues, staff and patients. In addition to the dental amalgam controversy, other controversial topics, such as root canal therapy, cavitations, oral galvanism, bridges and fluoride, might compound the outcry by the public. I believe many dental professionals are aware of the possibility of harm to the patient, but don’t know how to get out of the predicament. It is easier to see the cases of harmed patients as only a few than to admit it may be a bigger problem. Adding to the dilemma is the history of how anti-amalgam dentists have come
HOLISTIC LIVING
under scrutiny by the ADA and state boards since 1990. “60 Minutes” reporter Morley Safer interviewed a number of patients whose health improved when their mercury fillings were removed. He also reported the case of a New York dentist, Joel Berger, who lost his license for his anti-mercury views. Hal Huggins, author of It’s All in Your Head, lost his license to practice dentistry in 1996 in Colorado. Gary Jacobsen, a Minnesota dentist, gave up his license after repeated costly investigations into his manner of practicing. It became clear to licensed dentists throughout the country that they must be careful discussing their positions on mercury. While there is no gag order on discussing the amalgam filling controversy, the position statement from the ADA is that dentists can discuss it if the patient asks about amalgam harm and removal of fillings. When the patient asks about the dangers of amalgam fillings, more than likely the response from the dentist will be a confirmation of the ADA position on dental amalgam. After all, the dentist is under the jurisdiction of the state board, which in turn abides by the ADA philosophy. My view is that the code of ethics to do no harm means to do no harm to any individual. If there is even the slightest possibility that amalgam may harm even a few people, the situation warrants investigation and the further prevention of harm for all dental patients. Ignorance of any viable alternative philosophy and mere options are no excuses for shirking the responsibility the dental professional has to the American public. The dental profession is, however, made up of intellectuals who rely on responding in the same manner as they have for 150 years. Their peers confirm that their philosophy is valid. They resort to justifying their position by quoting the science they have judged correct, and discount the other studies that conclude that amalgam causes harm as anecdotal or somehow faulty. a Bette Jo Arnett graduated from the Northwestern School of Homeopathy in 1998. She is a registered dental hygienist in the State of Minnesota. A former educator of dental hygiene, she has a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. She graduated from the Hilton Johnson School of Health Coaching and received a certificate from the Center for Spirituality and Healing, University of Minnesota, in Integrative Therapies and Healing Practices. Bette Jo has training in Reiki level II and Pranic Healing Level I. She has practiced Ishaya Meditation since 2006. Bette Jo has a homeopathic and health coaching practice in Edina, MN. Helping You Heal An interview with Annette Bruchu of the Helping You Heal Center
by Tim Miejan
A
nnette Bruchu was gifted early in life with an opportunity to explore two of the Earth’s most basic elements: water and stone. The Minnesota native grew up in a home built near a rock quarry. A stream ran through the property, and as a young girl, Annette spent time playing with the stones, with the water, and in the process she discovered a connection with herself. She now is an intuitive healer who, in concert with a group of other healers, assists people in connecting with their true selves, their intuition and wellness. At the Helping You Heal Center in Stillwater, MN, she and others offer their healing touch and intuitive gifts, and in doing so, they bring balance to themselves. Annette says her upbringing was a spark that inspired the woman she would become. “My entire childhood was indirectly guided towards the metaphysical world because of where I grew up,” she says. “I believe that stones and water are two of the earth’s elements that are simple, but yet powerful, sources of energy that aid in our awakening and inner understanding. Because of this environment, I was fortunate to discover the gift of metaphysics at an early age. I was able to actually liberate the gift in the early stages of my life.” Her path toward healing was not unique, for many holistic practitioners are raised believing that traditional careers are the only option. “I once thought that I had to be successful in a traditional career to serve a purpose,” she says, “but I soon learned that helping others to achieve their success — whether it be through physical or emotional healing, success in their relationships or guiding them in awakening their gifts — was my purpose.” She felt an inner desire to connect with and help others. “I felt good as a result. This feeling not only inspired me to continue to help people, but it also helped me to realize that this was the work I was supposed to be doing.” The result is the wide array of services, classes and events she now offers at the Helping You Heal Center at 1775 Industrial Blvd. in Stillwater. Private healing sessions.
Personal intuitive readings. Healing and intuition blended in a single session to promote balance. Foot ionizations to promote healing. Energy massage. Aura photos to show the energy coming from you. Other healing Annette Bruchu – Reiki, Qigong, Healing Touch, Craniosacral and Myofascial Unwinding, and much more – is offered by a collective group of energy healers who collaborate with her. And she offers a variety of classes: Intuition Tuesday — Going strong now for more than four years, this class is from 7-9 p.m. and is open to the general public with no registration required. The fee is $15. Interactive Thursday - Offering more of a hands-on approach, the public is invited to drop in to take part in mind exercises, meditation and activities to promote more insight from 7-9 p.m. The fee is $15. Annette also offers classes on ghosts, workshops on crystal healing and gallery reading evenings where everyone’s questions get answered. She says these challenging times require us to be gentle with ourselves and to follow our intuition related to what we do and the people with whom we spend our time. “The way we start our day often determines the tone for that day,” she says, “so it is important to allow yourself to wake gracefully. You may want to wake to a gentle meditation CD, some favorite music or the sounds of nature. Do your best to enter the day on your terms. It may not always be possible, but make it happen when you can. “Let your body live. Your body has normal, everyday functions like breathing. Take time to breathe. Fill those lungs with air and do it often. It’s free! When possible, surround yourself with people who make you feel good. There will always be people who are on this planet to ruin the moments in your day. After they are gone, it’s your day again.” a Contact Annette Bruchu at 612.247.9719, email helpingyouheal@msn.com and visit www. UnemployedAngelForHigher.com. The cutting edge of your life by Louis Bourgeois
I
t might appear over obvious, even trite, to say that each moment is the cutting edge of your life. It’s actually a profoundly awakened level of awareness, evidenced in Eckhart Tolle’s expression “the power of now.” As we continue the acceleration in our collective evolution of consciousness, this awareness will become more normal and accessible. The awareness of “presence” comes when we stop running the common interference patterns called “past” and “future.” To be consumed by the past, in regrets and resentments, or the future, in anxiety and fear, is to give away this power – your power. All of the work of any “spiritual path” comes down to a very simple practice. Be aware of what is real and focus your attention on this reality. This is where your personal power arises, out of the vortex within you, your energetic body, as you allow it to do so. The whole notion of “personal power” points to the alignment of your consciousness with the vast power of eternity. What is real We have wrestled over many millennia trying to understand this concept of “eternity.” We have made up many ideas about it, often cemented into beliefs and religions, wreaking all kinds of havoc. The simple truth is that the eternal is what is real, in that what is real never changes…it simply is. Beauty, truth and love, three of the principle aspects of eternity, truly have no opposite. The universal intelligence, whispering through your soul, is always calling you to “look closer,” and you will see these radiant aspects of eternity in everything, everywhere, with no exceptions. Beauty is eternal. It exists always and everywhere. But you have the choice whether to witness this eternal aspect of life, compared to the egoic condition of seeing beauty as a conditional element of a judging mind. We are being called, individually and

collectively, to see with the eyes of the “spiritual mind.” With these eyes we see the “one thing” in everything. We see the shimmering radiance of divine energy everywhere, not impeded by conditions and circumstances. We accept the conditional human egoic reality, but we are not limited by this level of thinking. Light a candle You are called to bring this light of awareness to your world, to literally become a light in this world. As a very ancient sage, Confucius, said “Rather than curse the darkness, light a candle.” This practice of walking in the world bringing this light of consciousness is your ticket into paradise. As a core phrase from A Course in Miracles states: “Heaven is here. There is no other place. Heaven is now. There is no other time.” As I reflect on my nearly 60-year circle of life, I see “my” journey as truly representative of an aspect of “our” journey. There has been this “one thing” going on since the beginning of our collective evolution in time and space. It is incredibly exciting and fun when we see and feel our role as integral to the whole. This brings a great sense of meaning and value to one’s life and experience. Here is where we find the endless wellspring of enthusiasm, living, as it were, on the “cutting edge” of existence itself. How is this experience for you? Can you see this “cutting edge” in its relentless desire for expression through you? Is it possible that your life can become a whirling dervish dance of delight? Living on the cutting edge of your life, living with the awareness of presence, being aware of your spiritual function, is how to live “whole, happy and free.” Claim this for yourself…Now! a Louis Bourgeois is the co-founder along with Lynn Koll of the OASIS Center for Conscious Living. They will facilitate a transformational course in September called “Awakening through Conscious Living, Conscious Dying and the Circle of Life.” For further information, go to www.oasisexperience.org. Atlantis Speaks
The fall of Atlantis is streaming back into our consciousness by Cieladora
A
tlantis. The word dazzles our imagination. For almost 5,000 years, Atlantis has evoked mystery, grandeur and sudden catastrophe. The founding of the Atlantian Empire is lost in the dawn of time. Atlantis was ancient history 4,800 years ago when Egyptians carved stories about it on their temple walls. What little we know about Atlantian society was written by Plato approximately 500 BCE. In the 1960s, Anthropologist L. Taylor Hansen traced the migration of Atlantians into North and South America, India and Africa. She discovered that many Native American Tribes have legends of these mystical people fleeing the “old red lands” in the Atlantic Ocean. She suggested that the Mayan calendar might be a legacy from Atlantis. Earlier this year, Atlantis went mainstream. National Geographic featured ruins of an Atlantian city in Portugal. History Channel explored the Bimini Road, a causeway (now underwater) reportedly built by Atlantian engineers. Adding to the buzz, “Google Earth” shows sunken islands where the 31st parallel crosses the mid-Atlantic ridge – the Greek coordinates for Atlantis. Psychics also speak of Atlantis. In the 1880s, Ignatius Donnelly, driven by intuition, identified more than 600 historical references to the sunken land. Edgar Cayce, the psychic most often associated with Atlantis, channeled more than 700 “life readings” of people who once lived there. Modern psychics have contributed their insights.
Who were the Atlantians?
As proof accumulates for the existence of the real Atlantis, Atlantians themselves remain elusive. Even Cayce’s life-readings are tantalizing snippets of Atlantian life, not tangible portraits of actual people. Who were these tall, powerful people? What did they look like? How did they view their world? Where did they come from? Why did they disappear after the destruction of their island home? The Atlantians took the answers to these questions with them when they vanished. Or so it seemed, until two years ago when I awoke at midnight to voices describing
the Fall of Atlantis. Was I dreaming? Was I having hallucinations? My cat, Morgaine, didn’t think so. He raced out of the bedroom at the sound. He still pouts when Atlantian bird-whistles wake him from a catnap. For me (if not for my cat) these transmissions are enhanced by full-color, holographic scenes of Atlantis at the height of its social, political and cultural glory. Think “History Channel” on steroids. When I concentrate on a building, bridge or person, the Atlantian Records obligingly rewind to the start of the story then fast forward into the (Atlantian) future. I can control the speed of transmission. That’s a good thing, since I have made it my mission to transcribe daily life in Atlantis and to report conversations I hear along the way. The Atlantian Records
Unlike many channelings, the Atlantian Records don’t come from intelligent beings. They are more like an interactive computer continually streaming re-runs of Atlantian history into our time. The location of the message transmitter is unclear. Four sets of records are mentioned in the Atlantian Records. I speculate that the history programs I watch are broadcasting from a sunken island off the coast of France. Why are these transmissions audible only to me and my cat? Surprisingly, they aren’t. If you wake to whispering in the night, you too may be hearing the audio track of the Atlantian Records. If you dream about the Fall of Atlantis, you are likely picking up the video feed. And if you pay close attention to what you see and hear, you may find yourself transported, like me, back to the Long Lost Land. As for the rest of us, we’ll have to read the books and wait for the movie. a Cieladora is the author of three books channeled from the Atlantian Records. The first of these transmissions coincided with the worldwide activation of “energy beacons” set up 12,500 years ago by Atlantians in their crystal mines. For more information about Cieladora’s experience and the Atlantian Records, go to www.AtlantianRecords.com or visit with Cieladora in person during her upcoming Minnesota book tour. She will be speaking in Minneapolis and Rochester. Events are open to the public. See the September 11-12 Edge Happenings for more info. Copyright © 2011. All Rights Reserved.

Lost and Found When I found myself without money, I learned to share myself. When I lost my house, I became a traveler. When I lost my parents, Mother Earth and Father Sky gave me a Family. Collaboration: Healing through circles by Wendy Brown-Báez
I
believe that collaboration is the key in the unfolding of a new paradigm of spiritual awakening. Harmony Green and I met through kismet: not match. com, but the social networking site facebook. Harmony noticed my post: “Who wants to host a poetry salon?” She hosted me at All About the Journey and the success of that salon led us to collaborating. Both Harmony and I are healers, but our gifts and our methods are uniquely individual. By braiding our gifts together, we create a more powerful and whole experience. One of the gifts we have in common is our intuition. Both of us believe that writing is a direct connection to the deepest truths within, and we heal by accessing our inner guidance. Harmony uses the tools of intuitive guidance, channeling and energy work for those who seek healing. She acts as a liaison for those who are ready to be guided to the answers they already possess. I work in a similar way, using poetry and spontaneous timed writing to access the intuitive part of the brain. I think of myself as a tour guide. A safe space of vulnerability is created through sharing my story and being supportive of you owning yours. I am lucky to have inherited from Natalie Goldberg the idea that writing is a spiritual practice and free associative writing can quiet the critical left brain in order to delve into what has resonance for us, what is juicy and has energy, what needs to be told or what we resist. I encourage those who wish to continue writing. I help writers find ways to break through writer’s block or writer’s reluctance. I also encourage writers to persist if they have a dream of being published. But mostly I allow the Muse, the spirit of creativity and inspiration, to enter the dialogue. As Harmony explains, a mentor is a person with experience, wisdom and value
to share or teach to another person. She says, “This can be a process, a belief or a technique.” Her goal in the Harmonic Mentorship Program is to offer a way for spiritual collaboration to be melded to mentoring. She teams up with her clients to assist them in allowing healing for themselves. A collaboration is a dialogue — and so is mentoring. So often I find inspiration in those I am mentoring as I listen to their revelations and am challenged by their questions. In a circle, those revelations connect us to each other as we discover commonality and find the courage to speak from our authenticity. In the classwomb, we birth ourselves. Harmony is a midwife with a deep heart of compassion. I am delighted that we can share our passions and walk our paths together. To paraphrase Clarissa Pinkoles Estes, what these times require is all hands on deck. When we look between two mirrors, the images reflect into infinity. Isn’t that who we want to be? a Wendy Brown-Báez and Harmony Green will present The Care for Your Soul writing workshop on Mondays, September 19 - October 24, at All About the Journey, 5354 Chicago Ave. S., Minneapolis.
