LIONS MAY DAY

The May Day celebrations took place this year after missing them for three years due to Covid and Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We started planning it in the first week of September 2022.

Unfortunately, the three main Lions - Ian Edgar, Bill Miller and Geoff Silburn, who had a massive input into organising May Day had all passed away since the last one, so in many ways it was like starting from scratch.

The Lions members were all involved, but special mention must go to George McCrone who spent many hours going through a mountain of risk assessments and Health & Safety regulations to allow May Day to go ahead. We were fortunate with the weather, and it brought the crowds out, both locals and visitors and everybody seemed to be enjoying the day.

Thanks to all the non-Lions who also helped on the day. Without them it would be difficult to put everything on. I must thank the May Queen, ISLA CULVERWELL and her Attendants, SOPHIE LEE and EVELYN SCOTT, for the way they enhanced the day with a lovely smile on their faces.

One of the highlights for me was when JOHN THOMPSON brought his beautiful ROLLS ROYCE around the back of the George Hotel and the girls, and their parents went out to see it. They were absolutely taken aback - it was like a dream come true for them.

I would like to thank all the sponsors, as without them we would find it almost impossible to put on May Day as we know it, and the members of the public for their generosity on the day, and I hope everybody had an enjoyable day out.

Finally, like a lot of voluntary organisations, we would like more members in our club. As the saying goes, many hands make light work! If you are interested, please get in touch.
