Established in 1986 by Dr. Lucio C. Tan in honor of the family patriarch the late Tan Yan Kee, the Foundation represents the Lucio Tan Group of Companies’ commitment to corporate social responsibility. The Foundation’s principal projects support education, culture and sports; research; health and social welfare; and manpower development. A full-fledged non-governmental organization, the Foundation’s priority focus areas have evolved to keep pace with changing trends and societal needs. Today, the Foundation ranks among the largest philanthropic NGO’s in the country. Governed by a 15-man Board of Trustees, day-to-day operations are managed by an Executive Director and a team of professional staff. Funding comes mostly from donations of Dr. Lucio C. Tan and the member companies in his various industry concerns. Founded on core values of development, transformation, and capacity-building, the Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc. continues to provide tools and resources that enable individuals to replicate and pass on many times over the good they have received. At the end of the day, The Foundation’s aim is to leave a legacy that carries productive impact for many lives over many lifetimes.

The year 2008 was a time of deeper thought and closer look at our society and the world as the entire global village faced economic and other challenges that would eventually determine the landscape of the future. The Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc. did not lose sight of its vision of commitment and caring for the Filipino, while recognizing the increasing need to address various areas of urgent concern. We took stock of what we have done over the years as the Foundation sought to balance resources with need as well as the immediate and the long-term needs of those we serve. A sense of pride and fulfillment is inevitable as we saw the number of programs and their lasting impact on those whom we have reached over the past years. Yet, we believe that there is still much to be done. Over a 10-year period from 1998 to 2008, the Tan Yan Kee Foundation-University of the East Scholarship program has sent 792 scholars in various disciplines. Twelve of these were in the graduate level. As of the first semester of 2008, the 10-year average program spending was P50.82 million.

Reading proficiency aid through the Sa Pagbasa, May Pag-asa Storybook Drive from 2004 to 2008 totaled 63,260 books read by 220,000 pupils. This project was made possible through the strong cooperation of several member companies of the Lucio Tan Group such as the Philippine National Bank, Allied Banking Corporation, Allied Savings Bank, Philippine Airlines, Grandspan Development Corporation, Air Philippines, Foremost Farms, Asian Alcohol, Fortune Tobacco Corporation, Packageworld, MacroAsia Corporation, Allied Leasing, Himmel Industries, PanAsia Securities, University of the East, and UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center. Educational Television or ETV has also brought instructional materials through an alternative and entertaining form of learning even to far-flung areas of the country. Over the past three years, the Foundation, in cooperation with the ABS-CBN Foundation, has made this possible to 21 schools with 10,000 pupils all over the country.

Continuing education in the specialized fields of medicine and dentistry also received a significant boost from the Asia Brewery-TYKF Medical Specialty Scholarship. This project sends deserving doctors and dentists for specialization abroad and has so far seen 91 doctors and two dentists finish further studies. Eight out of ten of these doctors are serving their countrymen.
Strengthening the continuing learning facet not only of health professionals but of ordinary people, Asia Brewery and Tan Yan Kee Foundation has been running a monthly medical forum that provides health education regarding different forms of health concerns. The forum averages 300 participants per session. Beyond health education, the Foundation’s Project Asthma: Nebulizer Distribution Program – an actual resource provision addressing the rising pulmonary cases in the country – logged a total distribution of 548 nebulizers and 5,470 kits to different public health units, school clinics, and orphanages in the country. Started in 2004, Project Asthma continues to monitor and upgrade donated units. An average of 10 to 30 patients use the nebulizers daily. The CT Scan Machine donated by the Foundation to the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center has serviced some 7,884 patients over the last eight years. The Foundation continuously takes care of maintenance and professional fees to keep the machine efficient and of service to the AFP Medical Center’s patients. The Foundation has also been quietly addressing over the past years some key environmental issues such as clean air and water and continuing agricultural viability. Manufacturing firms of the Lucio Tan Group have established waste management and recycling as well as water purification systems that have been recognized and certified by local and
By no means are the foregoing the only projects that the Foundation is involved in. And as mentioned earlier, there is still much to be done as the Foundation continues to forge through with its projects. This is its continuum. The perseverance and the dedication to follow through until critical and permanent change can bring about genuine progress. It is in this spirit that the Tan Yan Kee Foundation continues to reach out where it is most needed and to keep pace with the call of the times. In 2008, recognizing the need to support its various projects with a strategic educational intervention addressing the youth, the Foundation went into partnership to support Project Citizen. The project seeks to educate and involve the youth, particularly secondary-level students in public schools, in the correct and responsible practice of civics and democracy. The project trains not only students but more importantly the teachers who educate them. Currently, the project is running in the National Capital Region. The steps we have taken throughout the last few years have given the Foundation a stronger resolve to enable the Lucio Tan Group of Companies to continue providing the legacy of caring and commitment for the Filipino people. Allow me, therefore, to take

Beyond this, the Foundation understands the need for continuing education as well as supporting strategic education projects geared towards responsible citizenship.

Creating A Brighter Tomorrow n UE-Tan Yan Kee Scholarship Program n Asia Brewery Medical Specialty Scholarship Program
Started in 1998, the UE-Tan Yan Kee Scholarship Program makes it possible for poor but deserving students to earn college diplomas at the University of the East that eventually make a big difference for their future. The program provides not just scholarship for tuition but also gives financial assistance. Faculty scholars of the University of the East and educational grantees from the Sisters of Mary are beneficiaries of the program.
Over the last 10 years, 792 scholars have been enrolled in courses
such as Engineering, Business Administration, Computer Science and Systems, Arts and Sciences, Dentistry, Education, and Fine Arts. Twelve have gone on to further studies in graduate fields. A significant number has given pride to the program with topnotch rankings in courses that undergo government board certifications. The Foundation’s allocated funding from 1998 to 2008 reached P50,820,000.

Close to 93 Filipino physician-scholars and dental practitioners from 1984 to 2008 have availed of subspecialty training of their choice in some of the world’s best medical institutions. Four years from the time the League of Corporate Foundations launched Sa Pagbasa, May Pag-asa, Storybook Drive, Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Allied Banking Corporation, Philippine National Bank, and other members of the Lucio Tan Group, reached some 126 public schools nationwide with more than 63,000 books donated. The project promotes a culture of reading among public school children, especially where there is a lack of reading materials. Estimates from recipient schools show that for the first year alone, close to 170,000 thousand pupils benefited from the undertaking. Related to the promotion of reading habit and proficiency, the Foundation is also involved in the Bright Minds Read Program of McDonald Charities and the Department of Education. Focusing on children in Grades 1 to 3, the project aims to help students in learning how to read, improve comprehension, and gain interest in learning. As of yearend 2008, 7,070 children benefited from Bright Minds Read Program. Bringing the habit of reading to a level of scholarly pursuit is the Tan Yan Kee Library. Here, one finds one of the largest collections of Chinese books in the country. The library’s establishment addressed the lack of available

Chinese books and journals for research by students, academics, and enthusiasts. Through the years, since the library was established in 2002, it has evolved into a research center for scholarly materials including Chinese literary arts, the classics, entertainment, health, and other topics. The Children and Youth Section of the library conducts activities during summer months to enhance knowledge of Chinese history and culture. The Foundation recognizes the reach and influence of mass media and technology. It also believes that these can be effectively utilized to provide an important learning experience and support especially for areas that have difficulty accessing educational aids and other resources. It is in this spirit that the Foundation partnered with the ABS-CBN Foundation for the Educational Television Infrastructure Program (ETV).

An ETV package is an entertaining educational method geared towards teaching Mathematics, Science, English, History, and Values, complementing traditional
or structured methods. Each package includes a television set, a DVD player, 108 volumes of DVD materials, and an episode guide for teachers. Over the last three years, the partnership with ABSCBN has covered 21 schools. Tan Yan Kee Foundation has provided 21 ETV packages. Tan Yan Kee Foundation’s Manpower Development Center (MDC) is living proof of the adage “do not give them fish; teach them how to fish”. Here, experts share their know-how to professionals wanting to upgrade their skills, aspiring entrepreneurs, and out-of-school youth who have less or no access to formal or vocational education. MDC conducts training for gainful employment and personal development, offering courses that span varying needs from computer literacy and Microsoft Office applications to livelihood training such as food processing and mudcrab fattening. Since MDC was established in 2003, it has provided training to 111 students, 20 employees, 130 fisherfolk, 72 parents, 18 out-of-school youth, 27 urban poor housewives, five volunteer-trainees, and one social worker.

FOUNDATION FOR UPGRADING THE STANDARD OF EDUCATION (FUSE)
via Technology (CONSTEC) in CD format, and the Science and Engineering Education Project (SEEP) in partnership with the Department of Education, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University. Since its inception in 1994 up to 2008, FUSE has trained 13,687 teachers, circulated 21,011 journals, and distributed 386,494 training video computer disks nationwide, even reaching remote areas. In 2008, Tan Yan Kee Foundation started a partnership with the Philippine Center for Civic Education and Democracy, with the support of the University of Asia and the Pacific and the US-based Center for Civic Education for Project Citizen.

The primary goal of Project Citizen is to develop in the youth, particularly high school students, active and responsible citizenship and governance skills. This is done through a program of education and training for both educators and students on skills required for effective citizenship; actual and practical exposure designed to foster competency and efficacy; and development of a deep understanding of the importance of citizen participation. Each year, the training and hands-on experience culminate in a showcase where school-student participants present
the result of their problem identification, research, and policy design in cooperation with public and private stakeholders in their chosen communities. Project Citizen is implemented in more than 70 countries worldwide including all states of the United States of America. In Asia, aside from the Philippines the project counts Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and India as active proponents. Health Services Health services provided by Tan Yan Kee Foundation seek to alleviate physical pain and contribute towards the foundation of a healthy populace. Medical and dental missions organized by the Foundation touch numerous individuals who usually do not have access even to basic health care.

Project Asthma: Nebulizer Distribution Program In recent years, respiratory ailments, of which asthma is the most common, have dramatically risen owing to varied environmental factors and lifestyle. Many public health units do not usually have life-saving equipment such as nebulizers. In 2003, the Foundation launched Project Asthma: Nebulizer Distribution Program in three Manila hospitals and two areas in Tarlac Province with 27 nebulizers plus 270 nebulizer kits. Five years after, the program has covered a significant area of the archipelago with some units needing maintenance or change. Total number of nebulizers and kits distributed as of end-2008 stood at 548 units and 470 kits, carrying a cost of P3.46 million, benefiting 117 hospitals, 316 health centers, three school clinics, and two orphanages. An average of 10 to 30 patients daily continue to benefit from the program.

Computed Tomography for AFP Medical Center Computed tomography (CT) or Computed Axial Tomography (CAT), is one of the most utilized advance x-ray procedure. Multiple images are taken during a CT or CAT scan, and a computer compiles them into complete, cross-sectional pictures of soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels. A CT scan is able to “photograph” images of parts of the body that cannot be seen on a standard x-ray. These scans often result in earlier diagnosis giving higher chances of successful treatment of many diseases.

Asia Brewery Medical Forum Keeping updated with the latest knowledge in the medical and healthcare fields, Asia Brewery, Inc. Monthly Medical Forum provides the much-needed venue for lay people to understand and use knowledge towards better health. Highly respected specialists who have been scholars under the sub-specialty program discuss relevant health issues with participants. Over the last 16 years, topics of interest have covered practically every aspect of illnesses and healthcare. Attendance is regularly full with an average of 300 participants monthly.

Social Welfare Tan Yan Kee Foundation’s involvement in social welfare concerns seeks to address long-term needs. Nevertheless, the other side of social welfare for the Foundation is responsiveness, which calls for urgent support and assistance to numerous victims of calamities.
SWIP prepares and ensures that water supply remains steady year-round for farmers, enabling them to plant and harvest through seasonal changes. From 2005, when the project was started, areas in the Northern Luzon Region have benefited from the project.

The Small Water Impounding Project (SWIP) are small water ponds used for irrigation with a three-fold aim to allow for fresh water conservation, enhance productivity, and provide livelihood. Soil and water experts, engineers, and agriculturists plan, construct, and rehabilitate water reservoirs.

Planting Calendar Distribution Program
Addressing correct planting methods that result to year-round cultivation and harvest, the Foundation’s Planting Calendar Distribution Program is a perfect complement to SWIP.

A partnership with the Department of Agriculture, the program provides user-friendly, easy-to-understand, illustrated Planting Calendars and guidebooks. These are useful to both professional and backyard farmers. Hope Caravan The urgency and efficiency by which the Hope Caravan is able to respond to victims of calamities indicate the synergy within the Lucio Tan Group of Companies. From complete water treatment equipment, food, medicine brought onsite to airlifting supplies and warm bodies to assist in the field, Hope Caravan makes it happen.

Beyond immediate relief, Hope Caravan also addresses the future rebuilding of lives and livelihood by bringing the Planting Calendar Distribution Program with the Hope Caravan. This is meant to provide a sustainable source of food and livelihood in the aftermath of calamities.
