Vollies make a big difference for disabled surfers. Photo Diana Willis The Disabled Surfers Association has put the call out for volunteers to help with its annual gathering at Clarkes Beach, Byron Bay, on December 8. ‘We are in need of surfers and water-oriented people to help run this day smoothly. We aim to take the disabled community to the beach and have a safe water experience,’ DSA organiser Diana Willis said.

‘It takes a minimum ratio of six to one to do this with ease and dignity.’ A volunteer’s morning starts at 9am for a briefing before the surfers arrive at 10am. Rash vests, sunscreen, water and a barbecue lunch are provided. For more information please contact Steve Keefe on 0417 812 414, or Diana at dianasgarden@hotmail.com.

B-grade riders Connor Gibney, Alan Hainsworth and Chris Boogert celebrate on the podium. Photo Wez Thompson Thirty riders across three grades took part in the Byron Bay Cycling Club’s summer criterium at the Arts and Industry Estate last Sunday. B grade was an exciting race with plenty of attacks and good individual performances. After consecutive wins in the opening two rounds Adam Taylor was in the action again early on and slipped away with Connor Gibney on the prime lap, though in the end Connor was too good for him in the sprint. The group took their foot off the gas for a while before a late attack from Chris Boogert caused a bit of urgency in the bunch. Chris looked to have calculated it well, but a massive bridge effort from

Alan Hainsworth on the final lap saw him catch Chris right on the line to take the win. Connor won the bunch kick to round out the podium. C grade always draws a strong group and yesterday was no exception. Paul Efanow was very active in the race with plenty of attacks, and deservedly took out the mid-race prime. In the end patience was key for Martin Bloor who took out a welltimed win ahead of Paul and Matt Bone in third. D grade chose to start with the C-grade bunch and did well to hang on for a fair chunk of the race. In the end the skills and experience of Dave Scully were too much for Marco and he took out a strong win.

Photo Dogwhistle Christian Layland Byron Bay Rams have claimed outright first place on the Summer Youth League ladder after an last-minute 2–1 victory over Richmond Rovers. A loss would have been enough to essentially knock either team out of contention so the exciting match lived up to the occasion. Byron Bay came out of the sheds with incredible intensity and created several chances in the opening minutes. They made that domination count in the 11th when a run along the sideline by Sam Jimenez-Swain set up Addis for the opener. The remainder of the first half turned into a tough battle and Rovers were able to score the equaliser. The second stanza was an end-to-end encounter as the sides searched hard for the winner with the contrasting styles of the teams creating an entertaining half of football.

Rovers continually fed their speedy forwards while Rams looked to create chances through build-up and combination play. Ultimately, Rovers’ physical play came back to bite them. As they tired, their defenders began giving away a number of free kicks in dangerous areas before the killer blow came in the final minute. Ryan Milgate slipped through the Rovers’ defence and was poised to shoot when he was knocked over by a recovering Rovers defender to win a penalty. Archer kept his nerve to convert the penalty, winning the game for Byron Bay with the last kick of the game. With two matches remaining, the Rams are three points clear at the top of the table and need to beat Italo Stars this Friday 8pm at the Recreational Grounds. In other SYL games Goonellabah lost to Alstonville and the Italo Stars beat Mullumbimby/Brunswick.

Soli Bailey can make the CT in 2019 if he keeps his form in Hawaii’s big swells. Photo Keoki/ WSL Crystal Cylinders Byron Bay’s Soli Bailey scored a ninth-place finish at the Hawaiian Pro held at Haleiwa on Hawaii’s North Shore with some powerful committed surfing. Now in 16th place on the Qualifying Series ratings Bailey has a real shot at qualifying for the 2019 Championship Tour. Bailey is seeded into the second round of the Vans World Cup of Surfing held at Sunset Beach along with Lennox Head’s Stu Kennedy. Our local pro surfers will be challenged with forecasts predicting one of the biggest swells (7–9 metres) of the

winter season for the first half of the Vans World Cup holding period. This 10,000 high-rated event is the final QS competition of the year and will determine ten hard-earned spots for the 2019 Championship Tour. Kennedy is currently positioned at number 35 on the QS ratings and would need to make the final to have any chance of qualifying for the 2019 CT. Now retired Lennox Head’s Adam Melling won the event in 2012 and Australian surfers have won the event over 50 per cent of the time over the competition’s history.

The biggest ever Summer 6s in Bangalow has over 70 senior teams and 24 junior sides. Teams have three more rounds to cement their place in the finals. Photo supplied
