tourist magnet. I get told that you cannot stop progress, okay. But those who are at the wheel should steer the progress so as to preserve what is a healthy community. They need to progress along a path that is healthy for the local people and not be swayed by those who worship money only. Len Hend Mullumbimby

Youth climate action I am heartened to see global youth activism demanding climate change action with the School Strike 4 Climate Action movement. It is their future and they are justifiably outraged at governments not acting on their behalf to ensure a safe climate future.  On the morning of Friday 30 November there will be a school strike action taking place in Byron Bay. I’m honoured to be supporting young people and their protest. I am calling on community members to be part of a support team to assist in the safe and successful

protest on the day. If you are willing to assist in providing marshalling to ensure the safety of the event and avoid any negative impact on traffic and businesses, please contact me on janbarham@bigpond.com to organise effective support for our youth. We need to support young people, who don’t have the right to vote but are the generation that will suffer from the impacts of government inaction on climate change. See www. schoolstrike4climate.com. Selling out Mullumbimby holds a special place in the heart of many, including myself. For generations people worked hard to make and keep Mullumbimby as a healthy community. It can remain a healthy community if people in control at Byron Council, Chamber of Commerce, estate agents, clubs, shopkeepers etc don’t focus on catering for the people that they do not have, but continue to focus on looking after the people that they do have. It would be sad to see the town being turned into a

Council set a precedent at last Thursday’s Council meeting for all future illegal development in the Shire by going against staff recommendations to refuse a development application (DA) on an illegal development on the Mullum Community Gardens. This wasn’t about wanting or not wanting a Men’s Shed. All agree this is good for the community. This is about process and principle. So in summary, great news everyone! Council has given the green light for Byron’s property owners to do whatever development they like on their properties without the need for a DA. ▜ Continued on next page
