Nature-inspired design – An epiphany of form Arion Ocean, Mullumbimby-based architect, believes that the greatest designer of all times is nature. ‘Consider the inherent beauty and economy of a seashell, a stone, a leaf. When fractals, shapes, and forms of nature serve as inspiration for the design of buildings and complexes of buildings, archetypal connections are made possible between the planet, ourselves, and with each other. Buildings that are directly inspired by these elements of nature resonate deeply, and somehow seem to vibrate the protein strings of our own DNA strands. This approach to biomimicry in architecture uses nature as the primary form generator,’ he says. He goes on to pose the question that in a built world essentially bereft of spiritual connection to the earth, is not the intricacy of nature’s forms and details the doorway to a new morphology of form and meaning? Is it possible that a new wave of architecture is mandated not only by the need to survive but by a deeply felt spiritual need to express and be
immersed in beauty? As we look ahead to a futuristic architecture that will help make a difference to the planet and will ‘love all of our children in beauty and intelligence’, we are designing to inspire living in consort with nature and its inherent interconnectivity in an ancient yet modern way. With this in mind this future-oriented Design Methodology gives four design parameters prominence over the myriad design requirements and constraints in any project.
Design aesthetics directly inspired by forms and shapes from nature Here the primary references for design are elements from nature. Within a multiplicity of defining criteria the beauty of the form is paramount in the result. That original reference is also the defining element in a process of designing from the outside in and the inside out. The final result is a resolution of organic complexity to-
wards simplicity of form, harmony, and graceful lines. Beauty speaks, and in this way inspires love and is, therefore, a kind of lure that catches the human soul and draws it back to its source in nature.
Eco-sustainable design considerations are embedded in every design in new and diverse ways. Buildings that use less energy, create less pollution, and are a joy to be in are a natural outgrowth of working with the forces of nature. In practical ways these buildings delineate between the body of the building and the skin; they naturally ventilate, breath, collect and store energy as needed. This new generation of eco-designs uses light foremost, which becomes a kind of building material in the sense of translucency, selective reflectivity, and the gradation of colour as hues meld into each other. Water and airflow act as integral defining elements along with light in the design.
The paradigm of the future envisions a new synthesis between the conscious designs of man and the universal designs of nature. Buildings or complexes of buildings become healthier, more vibrant environments through greater landscape / building interpenetration, creating lively settings that accommodate the range of human activity. Through the synthesis of nature-inspired designs, water, earth forms, plant-scaping, and landscape building a ‘new living architecture’ is possible, which is a real catalyst for healing and ‘a sense of place’.
The use of economy of means through innovative technology
Resurrecting the craft of model making. ‘Projects can be brought to life far beyond what is possible through computer modelling.’
Mass customisation through computer technology, super skins, and dynamic composite shell structures are a part of the new wave of technology that can radically alter our built world in positive ways. New computer technology allows us to jettison traditional buildings in favour of non-orthogonal buildings. Super skins create a dynam-
ic envelope that can be double layered to augment heating and cooling or use porosity to change the quality of light. Further information about Arion Ocean Architect at: www.sacredarchitecture.com.au / earthsoundtemple. com, mobile 0408 809 528.
