Two and two for Shores United

Byron Snowboarders go National

Marc Patten

The Byron Bay High School Snowboard team (yes there is such a thing) have made it to Nationals! Twins Jarra and Kai Millis are having a cracking season at Perisher – the pair competed at the Interschools on a regional level in the Boardercross and giant slalom, both qualifying for the state comps in boardercross and taking the team Gold. Last week the boys had challenging races in icy conditions at Thredbo for the State Interschools, but they raced well and as a team qualified for Nationals with Jarra placing 11th as an individual. They went on to compete at state level in slopestyle (jumps/rails) taking out the team Bronze and Kai placing ninth. Kai then had a nervous few days waiting to see if his score was high enough to

This weekend saw another bag of mixed results for Shores United in the semifinals, but the day really belonged to those wonderful U15s Shores boys. In 1st division and the semifinals for the first time, the kids had already sent Rovers packing the previous week. Away to Thistles was going to prove a very difficult task indeed. Right from the opening whistle both teams put it to each other. Shores put everyone behind the ball and with Marley and Caleb shutting down everything up the back, Thistles had no way through. Despite being bumped around the park, a gutsy Wilkes break through the middle saw him finish well and Shores went up 1–0.

The second half saw Ollie chip the keeper a beauty, and it appeared Shores had done enough. Thistles never gave up and with 13 minutes to go Shores were down to 10 men after a hand ball in the box. Thistles made no mistake with the penalty, still the final result saw Shores victorious 2–1. Now it’s grandfinal time for them. The men’s thirds in front of a big crowd saw Ben’s boys re-

ally stick it to rivals, Pottsville. The 1st division Brown Snakes suffered 2–1 loss to Tintenbar, while the old boys in 6th grade were stunned 3–2 by Kyogle, at home. Both teams did enough to win but three missed chances off the post and a cross bar, finally put paid to the old boys run of seven unbeaten matches. Both teams live again and are at home next week in do-ordie semifinal matches.

Late last month 36 students from the Byron Community Primary School travelled to Coffs Harbour to compete in the North Coast Independent Schools (NCIS) Athletics carnival. The school had children aged between eight and 12 participating in event. All the students put in a fantastic effort and all enjoyed the opportunity to represent their school. There we re some very exciting results with Elena Nagel coming first in 12/13 years discus with a throw of

18.63m – this result means she will be going to Sydney the next week to represent the north coast. Other great efforts were from Phoebe Pockley, who finished second in the 800m, and Jimmy Coppin-Buckenham, who finished third in the 800m – alas, although awesome results, the NCIS only takes first place winner to Sydney for the rep event. Most students improved in their times, jumps and throws and are all better for the great experience.

The 2018 AccesSurf ’s Hawaii Adaptive Surfing Championships was held recently at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii. Byron Bay’s Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart won the Kneel division of the the event with only small surf on offer. In the final Mono waited patiently for the bigger and better set waves and performed some great manoeuvres considering the conditions. The Adaptive Surfing Championships is held in partnership with Duke’s OceanFest, a Waikiki ocean sports festival honouring surf legend Duke Kahanamoku.

AccesSurf is a local nonprofit that empowers people with disabilities by providing adaptive water sports programs including the Adaptive Surfing Championships. Dedicated karateka (karate practitioners) from NSW and Victoria attended the Kase Ha Shotokan Karate Do self-defence seminar held recently in both Byron Bay and Bangalow. The workshops were delivered by two visiting senior 5th Dan Kase Ha instructors – Mark Johnson Sensei and Terry Raftry Sensei – from KSK Australia Juniors and seniors alike worked hard on very practical fighting drills during four intensive sessions. Our young local karatekas including 14-year-olds Roy Czislowski and Isaac Poulsen displayed not only excellent techniques but also courage, resilience and fighting spirit. Karate and advanced classes incorporate the teaching of Practical Self-Defence (PSD), the legacy of Taji Kase Sensei and Hirokazu Kanazawa Sensei. Bangalow-based instructor Jean Boussard is a 4th Dan in Karate Do, which he has been practicing since his teens. Jean teaches efficiency as martial arts are lethal knowledge, but above all, with an holistic approach that incorporates meditation in every session and the understanding of one’s own vital energy – the body becomes stronger and flexible, the emotions calm and serene, the mind as clear as a limpid lake (the Japanese ‘Kokoro’) and one ultimately gains in spiritual elevation.
