BUILDING BUSINESS & COMMUNITY 24 September 5, 2018 The Byron Shire Echo
At the age of 90 local Noel James will be starting this year’s charge up Mount Chincogan when he cuts the race ribbon this Saturday 8 September at the Mullumbimby Post Office. Runners and walkers will take the once-ayear chance to enjoy the fantastic views as they climb the side of the mountain as well as from the top. ‘As kids Chincogan was always the challenge,’ said Noel. ‘It was a popular area to explore.’ Local organiser and Mullumbimby Chamber president Jenelle Stanford agreed, saying, ‘Being local it’s part of Mullumbimby. If we can have access to the mountain for just one day a year our children can have these experiences like we did’. ‘Last year our volunteers could
not get over how many people thanked them for making it happen. All our volunteers came back because they had such a rewarding time last year. ‘Even if you’re not walking or running come and support your local community event.’
WHERE IT RACE REGISTRATION BEGAN The Chincogan Charge was started in 1960 as a fundraiser for the Mullumbimby Swimming Pool with the second race taking place in 1967 before it became a regular community event. Born in Mullumbimby, Noel reminisced about the fact that as a child he always thought that ‘there had to be better places than this. I didn’t realise how good Mullum was until I left,’ he said. Having headed to Bellingen as a young man, off for adventure, after a few years Noel came back to Mullum and joined his brother in a business that developed into James Electrical and the Mitre 10 hardware shop. ‘In my first years back the timber mill was a big part of the town and when it closed down we thought that was the end of the town,’ said Noel. But this was not the case and the town decided it was time to have their own local swimming pool, a huge effort that brought the local community together. ‘The bricks all had to be handmade,’ said Noel. ‘After work we had teams that would get together and have competitions to see how many bricks we could make. People really got behind it.
Sign-on for the race opens at 12. Look for the yellow surf club marquee. The under-12 race (6–11) will start at 1pm with the adults’ race (12+) starting at 2pm sharp. ‘Children entering the under-12 race need to be accompanied by an adult but they only go to the foot of the mountain as this the legal length for this age group,’ said organiser Jenelle Stanford. ‘This event takes place on public road so please have respect for race officials trying to keep you safe.’ If you still haven’t registered to run then get in before the spots are gone at https://www.eventwizards.com.au.
READY, SET, GO! The start and finish of the race will be at the Mullumbimby Post Office and Dalley Street – from the post office to the service station – will be closed from 12 till 5pm. Water will be available at the start and finish of the race as well as at various points on the mountain. The running track will marked by arrows and the up track will be different from the down track to stop congestion at the top of the mountain.
‘I’m very thrilled at the way the town has gone ahead. Mullum is a really progressive sort of town and people have got behind it – the whole place has been built by people doing good for the town from the swimming baths to Mullumbimby’s hydro scheme.’
Fire and Rescue NSW will be onsite with first aid and water stations on the mountain and other volunteers will be in green shirts throughout the course. This is a green event with biodegradable cups on the mountain or you can carry your own reusable water containers on the mountain to refill.
