Celebrating New Years Eve in Byron has been toned down in recent years, and this year, part of Byron’s Jonson Street will again be transformed into Soul Street, an alcohol-free pedestrian zone with food stalls and entertainment. Q Q Q Q
Council are promoting NYE’s Soul Street as a ‘family fun night’, yet say there will no fireworks and no beachside entertainment. Mayor Simon Richardson says, ‘There will be a lot of police around to make sure that New Years Eve is safe for our community.’ There will also be meditation and yoga from 5.15am at the Cape Byron Lighthouse to bring in 2018.

PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY: THE ONLY COURSE TO TAKE IN LIFE.
The Turnbull government’s path to oblivion at the next election perhaps moved closer since they announced cutting funding to universities, welfare and family payments. Austerity, or the tightening of public spending that does not affect the uber-wealthy, is best described as punishing the poor for the mistakes of the rich. Q Q Q Q
Austerity as a policy to address deficits is patchy at best; The Washington Post reported in late 2012 that the chief economist for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) believed that austerity efforts among wealthy countries to
shrink their deficits through tax hikes and spending cuts ‘have been causing far more economic damage than experts had assumed.’ Q Q Q Q
2017 saw the most journalists across the planet being locked up, according to The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). They say 262 were locked up around the globe. Turkey, Egypt and China are again the worst offenders. CPJ (www.cpj.org) say the pattern ‘reflects a dismal failure by the international community to address a global crisis in freedom of the press.’ Q Q Q Q
A robot building a Ferrari from thousands of metal parts, but without the knowledge of a combustion engine, is how chess.com have described a new artificial intelligence program called AlphaZero. The AI was given just the game rules and became the strongest player known within 24 hours. It's now been 20 years since computers have held the world chess championship title; Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov in 1997. Q Q Q Q
The battle between private commercial pursuits and community amenity rages on: Council staff said in a press release this week that of the 15,654 dwellings in the Byron Shire, ‘2,655 properties were advertised on holiday platforms such as Airbnb in 2017.’ Q Q Q Q
As such, councillors have asked staff to get tough with ‘the owners of unauthorised short-term rental accommodation’ and residents who believe their neighbours are doing the wrong thing can call Council on 6626 7000. Happy festive season, everyone!
