While the rest of the world moves forward with medicinal cannabis, Australia moves at a snail’s pace. Olivia Newton-John has just come out in support; she told Newscorp it helped her during her second fight against breast cancer. While there is a ‘pathway’ for the prescription of medicinal cannabis, it’s being slowed down by law enforcers and drug alarmists who appear incapable of learning how to tell the difference between the psychoactive plant and the medicinal non-psychoactive one. Perhaps they need to ask how it’s done overseas? Q Q Q Q

Congrats to local building company Balanced Earth, who just took out the Master Builders NSW award for Energy Efficient Building in Sydney. They constructed a Possum Creek home from hempcrete, which is one of the most thermally efficient building materials available. For more see www.balancedearthbuilding.com. Q Q Q Q

80 years of dancing and still strong! Tootie (Elspeth) Dunn, 82, has been leading the Bay Belles for the last 12 years and they can be found tapping their feet every Monday at Byron’s Senior Citizens Hall at the top end of Marvell Street. Elspeth also played swing paino in the halls around the district for many years. Pictured are The Belles, comprising Maureen, Becky, Nancy, Carol and Judith. The group is unable to find a suitable venue for a Friday class. If you can help, please contact Cas Lloyd on 0468 453 344. Photo Jeff ‘Tip Dunce I’m No Kiwi’ Dawson

Parents take note: keep an eye out for any sharp-edged fidget spinners in backpacks or around the house. Local police have seized a number of sharp-edged fidget spinners from schools. Prohibited weapons carry a maximum penalty of imprisonment for 14 years, they say, although of course a thirteen-year-old with a fidget spinner is unlikely to receive that.

Ultra-right-wing politicians and pundits tell us small government works best, yet the military industrial complex continues to bloat without much accountability under their watch. Another cornerstone value of the hard right is that personal liberties should not be interfered with. So what goes on in a private bedroom between consenting adults is no business of the state, right?

Just remember that while you vote for politicians once every four or three years, big businesses, no matter how toxic they are, get to influence politics regularly. According to the publicly available diaries of NSW ministers, Santos Mining held a meeting with the planning minister Anthony Roberts (Liberal) on April 3, 2017 to discuss the ‘NSW market.’ And on May 16, the minister met with the NSW Minerals Council to discuss ‘NSW planning policy.’ These are the same clowns who want environmental charities to be banned from using more than 10 per cent of their expenditure on advocacy.
