The Chincogan Charge started as a fundraiser for the Mullumbimby Swimming Pool and the first race was run in 1960. Celebrating the opening of the Mullumbimby pool the second race in 1967 was won by local Colin Creighton and Colin will be master of the race this year as he cuts the starting ribbon at 2pm on Saturday September 16. ‘The year I won it I was cutting cane at Wooyung,’ said Colin. ‘I was pretty fit because of the cane cutting, but I had to run barefoot because a few days before I’d cut my foot and had four stitches in it.’ Racers please note that this year you will need to wear your running shoes or you won’t be allowed up the mountain.

If you are just planning to enjoy a stroll and enjoy the views then please remember that you need to confirm with organisers that you are off the mountain by 5.30pm. No-one wants to be off on a pointless search for you that late in the day.
Food and drinks The park around the Civic Centre in Mullumbimby will have stalls set up by the services clubs for coffee, barbecue and light refreshments throughout the afternoon. The Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club will also be providing food and drinks throughout the day.
Exhibition Take a look at the extensive historical exhibition that has been put together by The Brunswick Valley Historical Society on the history of the Chinny Charge and the Chincogan Fiesta. It will be on display in the auditorium of the Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club. ‘The exhibition is on the history of the Chincogan Charge that will include footage of the old Chincogan Charge,’ said organiser and Chamber of Commerce president Jenelle Stanford.
Guessing game How quick do you think the fastest runner will be? There is a $200 prize from Mullumbimby IGA if you guess the closest time. Fill out the form opposite (on page 23) and make your best guess. Pop your entry into the box at the IGA and the Mullumbimby Newsagents. The entry box will move to the Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club on the day. You will be able to submit your guess up until the beginning of the race.
Water Keeping the event green and clean is key and water stations will be placed along the route with environmentally friendly cups. Runners and walkers are welcome to carry a re-usable water bottle with them but everyone is asked to bring their bottle off the mountain with them.
