Micro Living in Australia Property Insider caught up with Stephen Chant of Micro Living Australia recently. Stephen has lived in the Byron Shire for the past 34 years and has more than 30 years’ experience in the building industry. He has developed an innovative micro-dwellings that are location flexible, easy to install and can suit a variety of budgets.

What was the catalyst for developing the Micro Living dwelling prototype? After building a small cabin in the hinterland of Byron Bay and living for many years very comfortably with a small solar system, rainwater tank and compostable toilet, and of course the vege garden, I realised how little you needed to live an independent life, free from the demands of mainstream living.

How long did it take to refine the design? It has taken 24 months to develop the design and build our first microdwelling prototype.

Whom do you think a microdwelling will appeal to? We consider all age demographics our target market owing to the changing cycles of life and the various pressing social needs for affordable housing.

Individuals and young couples in the age bracket 25–34 represent the lowest home-ownership rates, but we believe they will have the financial capacity to purchase one of our microdwellings. Those aged 55 years and older are also looking to downsize, as the trend is for property owners to move into a micro-dwelling and rent out the main house.

Can you really put it on a trailer? Yes, we manufacture a registrable purpose-built trailer and the dwellings can also be transported by truck, as they are skid mounted or craned onto site.

How long does it take to erect and dismantle? The micro-dwelling takes one day to install plus your service connections.

What does each home contain? Our micro-dwelling has an openplan design with ful-sized kitchen and bathroom with a deck. We also have an options list, which allows the client to have some input on finishes.

What is the turnaround on orders? Once contract has been signed, the turnaround is 12 weeks.

How can people see the design? We are having open days on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 August between 9am

and 4pm. Everyone is invited to come and have a look, or they can contact us and make a time to inspect. Phone: 6684 6017 microlivingaustralia@gmail.com Open Day: 4 & 5 Aug, 9am–4pm 55 Foxs Lane, Tyagarah
