The Mullumbimby Bowling Club’s Ben Leeson and Leigh Rickert took out the Tweed Byron District Reserve Pairs Final against Burringbar at Ocean Shores on Sunday. The Mullumbimby pair played solid bowls to take the early lead they maintained throughout, but the game did develop into a tight struggle

and Burringbar’s Terry Standfield was forced to kill a number of ends to keep his side in the match. The 18th end proved critical as the Mullum team picked up five shots to take an 11-shot lead, and they then took the match 23–14 against a gallant Burringbar. The Mullumbimby pair will contest the Zone Final later in the year.

Brunswick women take second place in grade 3 bowls Pennant For the third year running the Brunswick Heads women have come second in the Tweed Byron District Women’s Bowling Association grade three Pennants Competition. Cabarita topped the table with 25 points ahead of Brunswick on 14. Cabarita won the flag despite losing to Brunswick 38–36 in the (rain delayed) third round of the competition played last week at

Brunswick Heads. Darilyn’s team took off with a strong lead, Cabarita fought back with the score ending in Brunswick favour 19–16. Blossom’s team also took off strongly leading until Cabarita caught up and finished winners 20–19. The game still to be played between Brunswick Heads and Ocean Shores will determine whether Ocean Shores or Kingscliff finished third in the Pennants.

The Lady Beez had an awesome game against the Storm with tough defence giving them a narrow lead for most of the game. It was a great team effort. The guards Lisa, Akari, Keko and Mandy all showed tenacity and made steals, fast breaks, three-point shots and long-range buckets. The centres Ava, Kate and Mercedes showed great strengths under the hoop for rebounds and baskets, while forwards Paula, Kate and Oriana held the Storm out with strong defence and baskets. Both teams racked up the fouls with four players each going to the bench. The Storm played athletic, accurate, strong ball and grabbed the lead with three minutes to go, taking the win 65–61. This men’s Beez team has a great mixture of youth and experience that will make

them difficult to beat. The Beez took the lead early in their game against Lismore. From the first jump ball Riley tipped to Jack who immediately popped a threepointer to get the scoreboard ticking over. Once again intense defence gave the Beez the edge. Big men Riley Gollan, Luke, Dan and Riley Flick worked hard to force errors from the Storm, while guards Matt, Sal, Raj and Jack applied good pressure forcing the Storm into turnovers. They also seized any opportunity to score with accuracy and speed. Michael and Ryan played tough hoops under the basket and Michael was top scorer for the Beez on 27 points. The Beez took the win 93–85. Round 3 for the Beez will be at Ballina this Saturday April 8.

Locals bow out of WSL pro at Margaret River Crystal Cylinders

Matt Wilkinson (Byron Bay) and Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head) will need to regroup at Bells Beach after some poor performances at the Margaret River Drug Aware Pro which saw them both bow out with equal 25th finishes. They started badly in the first round at North Point in extremely inconsistent conditions. For round two the event moved back to Main Break. ‘Wilko’ was up against WSL Wildcard Nat Young. The battle of the goofy footers went Young’s way after Wilkinson failed to back up his earlier good wave score during the back half of the heat. Kennedy was defeated by Miquel Pupo, as he appeared

to have trouble adapting to riding a longer board in the lumpy, bigger conditions, catching rails on a couple of critical rides. The WSL may be looking at some big changes to the World Tour for 2018, one of which is to cut the Margaret River Drug Aware Pro from the Championship Tour. If cut the event would most likely still run as a QS10000 competition. One of the other changes being proposed is cutting the number of surfers on the circuit to 16 or 24, to take better advantage of swell opportunities, by completing an event in approximately two days.

Beware of the brown water Surfers should beware of

the dirty brown water caused by recent rain and flooding at local surf breaks. Unfortunately the dirty water is likely to stick around over most of this week at least. The overloaded sewer systems and flood run off waters are carrying debris along with dangerous bacteria that can cause ear, throat and

eye infections and the real possibility of hepatitis. Authorities say keep out of the water for up to three days after it rains as there is very little dilution of pollutants within the surf zone. During this period waves act to concentrate contaminants along the shore and consequently coliform concentrations are often highest in the surf zone.

Local netballers Freya Peacock, Kaelyah Puni and Tarnie Hilyard will head to Terrigal this weekend to contest the 2017 Clubs NSW Academy Games. The girls will compete alongside more than 200 athletes from 11 Regional Academies of Sport across the State. The girls are part of the 24 member North Coast Academy of Sport (NCAS) netball squad selected last November to participate in both the Academy Games and the Australian Invitational Youth Games, to be held in Maitland in July. This is the second consecutive year that both Freya, 14, and Kaelyah, 15, have been selected for the Academy and

the first year for Tarnie, 14. They have attended monthly training sessions with elite-level coaches in preparation for the events, president of the Brunswick Byron Netball Association Robyn Venn said. ‘The girls’ achievement was a reflection of their impressive netball skills, love for the game and a desire to play the sport at a higher level. ‘These talented young sportswomen play for their clubs and represent our Association at state level, as well as fulfilling their commitments to NCAS. ‘We are very proud of them and wish them all the best at the upcoming games,’ she said.

Surf life savers collect medals at Masters Record number of locals travelled north to Kirra last week to compete in the Australian Masters Surf Life Saving Championships. Brunswick Heads SLSC sent a record of 12 competitors to compete at the carnival open to 30-year-olds through to over-70s. Brunswick’s Paul Davis came home with a bronze in the over-50s paddleboard and a silver in the short-board surf competition. He and his clubmates also came fourth in the surf team and board relay events. ‘Brunswick had four women competing for the first time, and are always looking for new members to join their expanding club,’ he said. The standout performers for the Byron Bay Surf Club included Glen Lawrence, who collected gold in the 55–59-years surfing, Heli Murray who earned silver in the 45–49-years Ironwomen and Vicki McKain who won the 69–64-years surf and the rescue tube.

Byron club president Paul Pattinson also had a good competition with his beach running collecting a bronze in the 60–64-year sprint, and a silver in the 1km run. Byron Bay teams also collected a gold in the 55–59years double ski, bronze in the 130-years ski relay, silver in the 150-years surf team relay, bronze in the 45–49-years board rescue and silver in the 55–59-years board rescue. And after a big effort from the McCabe brothers Mike, Greg and Dan, Byron also collected silver medals in the 170-years board, beach and taplin relays after a big effort.
