CHESS
by Ian Rogers Play at Byron Services Club, Mon 7pm When Garry Kasparov tweeted in May 2014 that ‘There are many studies showing positive effect of chess on delaying, improving dementia/Alzheimer’s’ he provoked a little-known English chess blogger Jonathan Bryant to ask for evidence. Over the next 18 months, writing on the Streatham and Brixton Chess Blog, Bryant has systematically deconstructed claims that chess helps dementia, in part by showing that the 2003 study ‘Leisure Activities and the Risk of Dementia in the Elderly’ which started the rush to brain training, was merely suggestive and indeed made no mention of chess at all. While the 2003 study found that playing musical instruments, board games and dancing were associated with a lower risk of dementia, the authors cautioned that ‘our findings do not establish a causal relation between participation in leisure activities and dementia,’ and later ‘our findings do not imply that subjects who were less active cognitively increased their risk of dementia.’ Bryant then set about bringing together every study that he could find regarding chess and dementia and found that the evi-

dence was decidedly equivocal. For example, a 2013 French study found a small decline in dementia recorded among board game players, though this seemed to be operating in parallel with a lower rate of depression among the board games players. Bryant is open to the possibility that playing chess might be beneficial – though the findings that brain games offer no protection against dementia for people under 60 are not encouraging – but he is keen to call out the unsubstantiated claims made so often by chess promoters. For amusement, he has also collected front pages from just one English newspaper, the Daily Express, which have promoted methods of avoiding dementia. The list includes vitamin B, aspirin, statins, losing weight, less surgery, less stress, daily walks and even chocolate! Alzheimer’s Australia make the point that ‘The biggest risk factors for dementia are getting older and your genes – things you can’t do anything about.’ Nonetheless, AA recommends certain actions which can make a marginal difference, most notably – and obviously – regular physical and mental activity. Playing chess could be part of this – just don’t expect the wonderful results foreshadowed by Kasparov.
