Knifepoint robberies

One woman was threatened at an ATM in Jonson Street, and another had her handbag snatched, both at knifepoint, in Byron Bay last Sunday night. It happened around 7.25pm, and the man suspected of both incidents is described as being of slim build, aged in his 30s to 40s, about 170180cm tall, with short dark hair and wearing a blue top. In the second incident, the man was further described as wearing black-framed glasses, black long pants, with a black v-neck jumper covering the blue shirt. He was also seen wearing a grey-coloured fedora style hat. Police are urging anyone with information to call 1800 333 000.

Byron Bay’s Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart made history by winning the first ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship in La Jolla, California on Monday. Surfing Australia Media reported that Mr Stewart had been waiting a long

Meanwhile Mignon Frances from another stallholders group – the North Coast Market Stallholders Association, told The Echo that her members feel threatened by Council’s plans, ‘but we are in constant discussion with them.’ Byron Markets manager Tess Cullen is more concilatory, and told The Echo, ‘At this stage it is good that Council is engaging and communicating with market

management regarding the proposed use of Butler Street Reserve as a car park and market ground. The impacts of the proposed Butler Street roadworks are, of course, also under consideration. ‘The lack of care and attention by Council to the market ground has been highlighted by the market management over many years. Council has a great opportunity at this time to improve the condition of the reserve to achieve

Beaches aerially patrolled A gyrocopter trial will patrol South Golden Beach to Broken Head until Sunday October 4, Council have announced. Mayor Simon Richardson said Council will trial the patrol, ‘weather permitting’. ‘The flights start from

both a car park and continuation of an iconic market site. ‘This meeting was a good opportunity for stallholders and managers to outline key considerations to Council staff regarding the development and use of the grounds. ‘This includes maintaining existing grass cover and trees around the edge of the site, improved drainage for the ground, and a gravel cover that does not involve the use of bitumen.

‘The Byron Markets management will continue to work with Council to ensure the needs of the market and stallholders are a key consideration in decision making regarding Butler Street reserve developments.’ Rainbow Region Stallholders Association are holding a meeting for all stallholders after trading (4pm) at next Sunday’s Byron market to discuss the implications of Council’s latest scheme for Butler St Reserve.

Corrections Further to last week’s story on the Mullum hospital, retired builder Alan Wilson told The Echo that when he worked on constructing the emergency department, no asbestos was found there, as that section of the hospital was built without asbestos. ‘We discovered the asbestos in the original part of the building, and I believe that it is contained and quite safe,’ he said.

And further to last week’s story regarding a rejected high-density DA in Bruns, The Echo reported that councillor Di Woods did not vote in favour for the deferral, when in fact she did. The error has been traced to Council minutes being ‘corrected’ by staff, after Echo intern Jack Davison took the information from Council’s minutes.
