Waiting for her human, Dubi the dingo lounges on the verandah of Kohinur Hall as her man Murray ‘Muzz’ Drechsler speaks about his time on the frontline fighting the coalmonster at Maules Creek. The annual $100 resident charge for parking in Byron Bay seems like ‘double-dipping’ on Byron Council’s part when residents already contribute through their rates or, if tenants, support ratepayers through rent and buy goods in town. Or is Council just trying to promote the Bay’s image as an enclave for the rich? Why not just make it into a gated community? Q Q Q Q

On a more positive note, Council, in partnership with Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE), is hosting a free community forum on Sunday June 21 at the Cavanbah Sports Centre in Byron Bay, 9.30am–12.30pm, on the subject of becoming ‘Australia’s first Zero Emissions community’. Council says the forum is ‘an open invitation to all interested community members to come and help co-create a Byron specific strategy and plan’. Backlash abhors the word ‘co-create’ but you can’t have everything you would like in a zero-emissions world. Q Q Q Q
While our prime monster from the 1950s clings rigidly to the quaint notion that ‘coal is good for humanity’, the Norwegian parliament voted last week to instruct the government pension fund – the largest in the world – to cut its exposure to fossil fuel risk. According to Reneweconomy.com, ‘rapidly falling clean technology costs and the global push for an agreed policy for decarbonisation combine to force the hand of global capital markets’. Q Q Q Q
Telstra is now actively promoting its ‘free Wi-Fi switchon trial’ in Mullum, part of a nationwide rollout. The catch is that once the free trial period ends in June ‘Non-Telstra customers and Telstra customers who have not joined the Wi-Fi community will be able to connect‌ for a small charge using guest passes’. Telstra says that since the Wi-Fi hotspot trial launched nationally in November last year, in NSW there has been 91.29TB of data downloaded through to mid-April this year.
