CASSIE is a lovely older kitten. She has been with us far too long. She is a very friendly, well socialised youngster, who at times gets a bit sad at being passed by. She has great potential, and just needs to start her real life with a human friend. It is sad to see her just waiting, week after week. Cassie has a wonderful personality, and she will shine once away from the crowded confines that she now lives in. Give her a chance and be well rewarded by her cheerful friendliness. All cats are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. Please make an appointment 0403 533 589 Billinudgel petsforlifeanimalshelter.net

In a nutshell, the Mullumbimby Giants were beaten by a better side in their NRRRL Round 8 fixture at Les Donnelly Field on Sunday. The final score of 34–14 looks ugly, especially after the previous week’s capitulation at Murwillumbah, but there are always extenuating circumstances in any game of footy. So if the boys had forgotten it, they will have been reminded of one lesson the hard way – you can’t win without the ball. Having battled every inch of the way to trail by only 14– 10 at the break, Mullum simply could not get their hands on the pill when the contest resumed, as the ref blew five penalties to Marist Brothers in ten minutes. With such a weight of possession, the visitors inevitably crossed and were suddenly more comfortably placed at 20–10. There was still plenty of time left, but you can never over-estimate the value of momentum – or its loss. The Giants and their diehard
supporters were champing at the bit to get stuck into the Papists but they could do naught in that critical opening stanza. A couple more penalties followed, one for a headhigh tackle (‘he was wrongfooted!’ pleaded a Giants’ supporter from the drinkers’ shed, but it was an old-school coathanger), and then again for giving lip to the ref. Marist didn’t need further invitation to add to their score and, at 26–10, it was curtains for the blue-and-golds (actually, with the Papists in the same colours, it was a bit like watching Parramatta v Parramatta). Following the Under-18s’ gutsy 24–20 victory, Mullum

started the game promisingly. Keen as mustard and completing their sets, they were well placed early to hoist a towering bomb, only to see it cleanly defused by Marists’ full-back. He was eighty metres rom the Giants’ line, but he put his head down and only had a hand laid on him when Ethan ‘Hawke’ Anderson, flying from the clouds in his lairy red headgear, landed on him with a classic swan dive – only trouble for Mullum was, the other bloke was already in under the black dot. When the Papists put their left winger over in the corner, employing the basics of creating an overlap and exploit-
ing it with regulation drawand-pass, we all feared that it might become a case of ‘by how far?’ for the visitors. Mullum, however, weren’t to be easily dismissed. Fourpointers to winger Jeremy ‘Irons’ O’Donnell and centre Sean ‘Penn’ Watkins (pictured), who tried hard all day, and a mighty sideline conversion from half-back ‘Mister’ Darcy Earl had the teams at level pegging and the mob in the outer getting very toey. A sluggish, ill-disciplined start to the second forty condemned the Giants to chasing the game. Another try to O’Donnell, when he scooped on a loose ball after his opposite number had been unceremoniously decked, briefly kept it close at 26–14, but those of us who hoped for the best were living in a fool’s paradise. For all their endeavour, the Giants are shy of the finesse to take advantage of their opportunities. The grunt is there, and the courage, but the acumen, at this stage (and they are a young, comparatively small outfit) is lacking.

IN MEMORIAM
From one little green man to the other. Love always, memories forever. J and L
North Coast news daily:
AFL team’s Byron Bay contingent Diesel Drury, Finn Reece, Seth Carter, Kesheva Raju and Kolbi Wood represented at the PSSA at the Blacktown International Sports Park.
At a recent PSSA event at the Blacktown International Sports Park, six Byron AFL players and Byron Junior AFL club president, Barry Spry, enjoyed an unprecedented, successful state carnival. Marlin Corbett, Kesheva Raju, Finn Reece, Seth Carter, Diesel Drury and Kolbi Wood were all selected to represent the north coast at the U12 primary schools state championships with Barry Spry as team manager. The north coast rarely get to play the Riverina as they are in different pools and, normally, different classes.
However, at the end of day two of the carnival, after three games and two wins, North Coast were assigned Riverina in their first final. Ten thousand words and a quarter-cup of tears would be needed to tell the whole story of the gruelling match; needless to say, the final scoreboard showed Riverina up seven seven points at the final siren: 4.2.26 to 2.7.19 for the win. North Coast, the little bloke, battled and pushed and ran to the bitter end. In the spectators’ eyes, the boys won a superb moral victory, through time and space.
stall at the Love Lennox Festival. The stall is a fundraiser for the club and their favourite charity Disabled Surfers Association. During the festival there will be a Surfboard Swap Meet. This event is organised to provide regional surfers and surfboard collectors an outlet to buy, sell and trade as well as to network with the broader community. The stall will also proudly display the Ma Bendall / Phyllis O’Donnell Memorial Shield, which All Girls Surfriders have won for the last two years. Then on Sunday, the All Girls will host the Ma Bendall / Phyllis O’Donnell Inter-club Tag Team Challenge. This event runs annually and this year the club is excited to announce that the legendary and inspiring Phyllis O’Donnell, now in her 80s, will present the shield to the winning club. In 1964, at the age of twenty-seven, Phyllis O’Donnell won the first-ever world championship in women’s surfing. For her efforts, apart from the glory, she won $250,

a surfboard and numerous packets of cigarettes. When she entered the sport, it was dominated by men, some of whom, she recalls, would take aim at her while she was paddling out to catch waves. The All Girls Surfriders, the Mid North Coast Girl Surfriders and the Sunshine Coast Girl Surfriders will compete for the chance to take home the shield. The Love Lennox Festival is on this Saturday 6 June and the surfing event starts from 7am on Sunday.
