The album was produced by New York-based producer Andy Baldwin (Bjork, St Lucia, Cat Empire), engineered by Richard Stolz at Woodstock Studios in Melbourne, and mastered by Joe LaPorta (Sterling Sound, NYC – Foo Fighters, Vampire Weekend, The Killers). The power trio are eager to unleash their new material onto their Australian supporters. Dallas Frasca play the Hotel Brunswick on Sunday, with support from CC The Cat. Show at 4pm. Free.

I CAN SEA THE JAZZ

Saturday 6 June 2015 from 7pm the Lennox Head Cultural and Community Centre presents a fabulous night of jazz by worldclass musicians. The NRBB (Northern Rivers Big Band) is sounding better than ever with Royden Ainsworth as the band leader and musical director. Royden, on first alto sax and clarinet, shares his vast experience, having performed with top Australian and overseas artists Laura Nobel is the jazz/ blues vocalist who performed her first professional gig at age 15. Drummer Jeff McGuiness, keyboard player Steve Johns, and alto-saxophonist Peter Bauers were members of Australian Navy bands, and many other bands.

reroute and rejuvenate continues. If something’s just not working no matter how hard you try, here’s a simple equation: pushing equals stress, retreat equals peace. Some things need putting to rest permanently and this is a good time to do it. TAURUS: Your astral emphasis this week’s on education, upskilling and personal growth. The prime requirement is flexibility: adapting to shifting circumstances rather than struggling to make a fixed plan work. Don’t waste energy second-guessing other people’s motives; check instead whether any resistance to compromise on your part is blocking progress. GEMINI: Happy birthday, overflowing cornucopias of effervescence! With so much planetary activity in your sign this is celebration time, though your mentor Mercury wants you using it for introspection as well as extroversion. So observe, learn, strategise – and practise Gemini Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche’s contemporary definition of enlightenment: Taking it easy…

CANCER: If other people’s mental calisthenics are driving you to meltdown, dose up on the stabilising regularity of familiar routines: sleep, relaxation, humour, creative pursuits and nourishing comfort food. Make home an oasis from confusing communications. Investigate the highly satisfying feng shui of tidying up and tying off loose ends.

Trombone player Mike Keogh played with the Daly-Wilson Big Band plus many others. Electric bass and tuba player Bruce Worrall played with a wide range of the top artists, starting an early age as a pop star with Sherbet; Bruce is now also well known for his excellent solo guitar performances in this area. Martha Baartz has performed extensively at renowned Australian jazz venues and many international festivals. Martha is also a composer arranger, most well known for her compositions performed in The Baartz Freeman Sextet. Special guest Elly Hoyt is a jazz and contemporary singer, composer and teacher. She currently lectures in jazz voice at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, and is studying a Masters of Vocal Pedagogy at the Queensland Conservatorium. Elly released her second album Oranges & Sunshine in March 2015. All this and more at Jazz by the Sea, part of the Love Lennox Festival. Tickets can be purchased by going to the website and clicking on Jazz by the Sea. Alternatively call Liz on 0411 544 004.

M

SAGITTARIUS: Sagittarians are gamblers, but this week’s odds aren’t in favour of starting up something new. Better to spend more time at the drawing board – which shouldn’t faze you because you’re also the zodiac’s optimists, who know that taking a step back before moving forward is simply doing a cha cha.

N

CAPRICORN: Capricorns adore a to-do list, but the less you plan this week the happier you’re actually likely to be. Yes, there are some unsettling trends, but shakeups needn’t mean breakups if you step away and let things settle. Doing’s an addiction, so at some time this week do absolutely nothing.

O

P

LEO: The current cosmic casserole forecasts sparkling conversational exchanges and a fluent flow of entertaining chat as active minds and mobile mouths buzz with bright ideas. If a cherished dream’s been a bit dented recently, this week resurrects a new way forward with friends providing staunch support and sound advice.

I

J

VIRGO: This week has its differences and dissonances, which you’ll be advised of ad infinitum via non-stop chatter. Resist the perfectly natural urge to insert ear plugs, and let others gush – because with your planet mentor Mercury in Virgo’s house of achievement till early July, you may pick up some useful information. LIBRA: Restrain that lively eye for the unnecessary buy, ditto urges to splurge on etail therapy. Check the spending agenda by window shopping. Key words right now are conservation and economy, so make less look like more. Good news? Late-week Libra moon’s delightful for unwinding and letting your hair down.

K

L

SCORPIO: This week’s objections, criticisms and conflicting opinions require extra tact and care, even if you’re not in the mood. Notice any signs or indications that your leadership style might need revamping. If you’re stubborn about your goals but flexible about your methods, others will be more receptive to your suggestions.

You will also be able to see John working on his own paintings in the gallery throughout the exhibition. Earth to Sky is opening 6pm Friday, and available for viewing until 10 June at Byron Library’s Lone Goat Gallery – open 10am–4pm daily.

Free admission Gallery open Wed-Sun 10am - 5pm

AQUARIUS: This week’s unpredictable but hey, you’re Aquarian: you can work with that. Also with whatever inventive concepts and creative possibilities present themselves for feasibility studies. Approach these in the latest, up-to-date, hi-tech style and put thoughtful planning into the commitments and agreements you want to last.

PISCES: While this mental-as-anything week isn’t the emotive Piscean kind it’s certainly changeable, showing its flip side one minute, smiley face the next. What to do? Refuse to take upsetting innuendos to heart; walk away and don’t engage. There’s a wealth of inner replenishment available from home-centred pleasures.

(www.mebairdmusic.com), an audience Q&A with Sam and Pat. Sam will be signing copies of his book You Can’t Always Get What You Want, and refreshments will be provided. Thursday 4 June at 6.30pm. Tickets $15 presale from Bangalow Music & Books (6687 1592), or $20 on the night. All proceeds raised will go towards Sam’s ongoing medical treatment.

EARTH TO SKY

WHAT’S ON AT THE NORTHERN RIVERS COMMUNITY GALLERY

Ballina showcases the work of five established and emerging artists from the northern rivers region who explore the theme of place through their diverse artistic methods. Artists Rene Bolten, Jennifer Lowrey, Jeremy Austin, Heather Jessup, and Claudie Frock, also known as the popular Peggy Popart. In a separate show Lismore-based artist Rachael Windress will be exhibiting a series of abstract photographs and interactive

Sam Cutler (tour manager Rolling Stones/Grateful Dead) will be in conversation with Pat Davern (Grinspoon) at the Byron School of Art teaching space, which is part of the Station St Studios complex (home of Bangalow Music & Books) at 2/10 Station St Bangalow. Sam Cutler’s book follows the notorious rock ’n’ roll stories of the late sixties and includes the infamous concert at Altamont where a man was murdered by a Hells Angel in front of the stage while the Stones played. After the show Sam was left behind to make peace with the Hells Angels, the various mobsters and organisations. These are only some of the stories! The night will feature a live musical performance by ME Baird

EXHIBITIONS

The Venerable Geshe Sonam Thargye will be offering a public talk on ‘Karma: The Law of Cause and Effect’. Unfortunately Tony Abbott won’t be able to attend that one but it would be a timely reminder that all choices have consequences, and if not in this life, then quite possibly in the next. Geshe Sonam is a devoted student of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and is the Spiritual Directer of Drol Kar, the Buddhist centre in Victoria. He will be at the Byron Community Centre on Wednesday 17 June 7–8pm. Entry by donation.
