LION TAMING
How does this affect the way you make music and the stories that you tell? After a while, we ended up quitting our jobs and travelling around Australia, playing at music festivals and anywhere that would have us. When you live together in a van for more than a year, you get to know each other pretty well. I feel that that has helped our collaborations to be more honest and open. Is it possible to be as honest in your songwriting when your partner is part of the process? We have had a lot of shared experiences in recent years seeing some amazing places with our travels. Because of this we can create two perspectives of the one event and mash them together in a song. That is kind of what happened with Heading Home. Kara and I are both pretty open and honest with each other in our relationship; I guess this makes it easier to collaborate. How has your musical relationship been strengthened by your personal relationship? I find the music industry to be challenging and sometimes lonely. It as been very helpful for me over the past few years to have someone who you care for deeply share in a passion for creating music and sharing it with others. How do you want people to be affected by your music? We feel that our music is very much centred around our close harmony melodies and the lyrics. We would hope that people enjoy our shared love of singing and writing. What should we expect for your launch at The Court House? We have what we hope to be a pretty exciting event lined up that draws on the local musical community. We have the fabulous and everlovable Miss Amber and Stukulele playing; my wife’s all-girl trio Sheoak, and our local choir that we sing with, The Grail Singers. We also have a full band performing with us with talented and seasoned local musicians. We sincerely hope it will be a night to remember. Saturday at The Court House Hotel, Mullumbimby. Tix: Earlybird $15 (+bf), Door $20. Available from www.kupromotions.com.au/?p=1550.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: LISA HUNT IS BACK! Well the tracks may be closed but the soul train is stopping in Mullumbimby this Saturday. Lisa declares that she is ready to party. ‘It’s been long overdue but we were playing Byron for New Years Eve and had to lay low locally when I got back from overseas but now I am ready!’ Mullumbimby has always been up for a soul, disco and funk party so dust off your platform shoes and throw on some glitter for Saturday night at the Mullumbimby Ex-Services with Lisa Hunt and her band. Who needs Zumba when you’ve got soul!

HAPPY UKE NIGHT Guess who is celebrating a birthday? All of this from 6.30pm. Songbook is available for download now. Make sure you are on the mailing list at ukemullum.com for the link. Thursday 26 at Court House Hotel. Adults under 15 $10, kids $2.50
BYRON MUSIC SOCIETY
GETTING BELLIGERENT IN BYRON
The Byron Music Society presents its first program for 2015 – Threads. A stunning and unique combination of dance, music and visual effect that captures the essence of Byron Bay. The principal architect of the program is Argentinian composer and multiskilled musician, Dr Gerardo Dirie, head of music studies at Queensland Conservatorium. This is a ground-breaking collaboration inspired by fibre artist Mirra-Winni, dancers from Byron Ballet and Dr Dirie. So come to the Byron Community Centre on Sunday at 2pm to meet the artists and enjoy the program at 3pm. Enjoy a celebratory champagne after the show. Tickets: 6685 6807 or at the door. Adults $30, members $25, children $10.
The Belligerents are a five-piece band from Brisbane. Their newest single is called In My Way. The track was produced and mixed by their bass player, Konstantin Kersting, at Airlock Studios in Brisbane. In 2012 they won a spot playing at Parklife in Brisbane from Triple J / Triple J Unearthed propelling this band into the spotlight. Over the past two and a half years they’ve toured with and supported some pretty impressive customers, proving the Belligerents are a headline in their own right. Some of those acts include international and local acts, including Metronomy (UK), Neon Indian (USA), Breakbot (France), Van She, Last Dinosaurs and San Cisco. They play the Hotel Great Northern on Saturday.
TIJUANA CARTEL GIANTS IN THE MAKING Support your local footy club – the Mullum Giants – with a special fundraiser at the Hotel Brunswick this Friday. World music giants Tijuana Cartel played New Years Eve in Byron to huge acclaim. These guys pump out fat beats on a fat sound system with Middle Eastern scales rolling through hypnotic dance music. They are playing a free show at the Bruns with the pub promising to match gold-coin donations for the club dollar for dollar, up to the tune of $10k! The club is looking for players and members, or perhaps you just want to come and enjoy the wonder of Tijuana Cartel – joined by Kallihad from 6.30pm.
COURTNEYS AT THE NORTHERN Drifting back to the sound of the early 90s, while reflecting a fun-in-the-sun west coast mentality, The Courtneys deliver a special blend of fuzzy slacker pop that draws comparisons to Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr and The Clean. Musicianship is tight, the hooks are sharp and the songcraft is dynamic. Courtneys play the Northern on Friday.
MY NIMBIN QUEEN The forthcoming album My Queen by alt-rock musician Diana Anaid resumes the eccentric and dynamic singer/songwriter’s nearly twodecade-long career, a career that already includes five ARIA nominations and a legion of fans both in Australia and abroad. Anaid’s acousticbased songs have always been recorded with a progressive rock sound, and the new album My Queen is no exception. Reminiscent of many strong female artists and yet brimming with individual style, the album already has industry buzz. Friday at Nimbin Hotel.
GYPSY MUSIC FOR THE SOUL Ku Promotions are proud to present BANDALUZIA – an acclaimed modern flamenco ensemble led by ARIA-nominated virtuoso guitarist Damian Wright. He’ll be performing original compositions from his upcoming album release and will have two brilliant flamenco dancers.’ Friday at the Drill Hall, Mullumbimby. Doors open at 7.30 pm and tickets are available from http://www.kupromotions.com. au/?p=1542.
