Byron Shire Council proposes to re-establish alcohol-free zones (AFZ) to restrict the consumption of alcohol on specific roads and public car parks within Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay, Mullumbimby, New Brighton, Ocean Shores and Suffolk Park.

These restrictions will be clearly sign posted and enforceable by NSW Police or enforcement officers. Any alcohol in the possession of a person within an AFZ may be seized and disposed of in accordance with the directions of the NSW Commissioner of Police.

Alcohol-free zones are established under section 644-644C of the Local Government Act 1993 and in accordance with the Ministerial Guidelines These maps indicate the specific streets and public car parks that will on AFZ. The alcohol-free zones proposed apply for a period of four years. be restricted under the AFZ. Alcohol will still be allowed in relation to approved footpath dining restaurants. Any person who is in possession of alcohol, or who have been consuming (or continue to consume) alcohol within a designated AFZ, are guilty of an offence.

Any person may make a written submission to Council regarding the proposed zones prior to 4.00pm Friday 10 October 2014.

Community Access Points: Documents on exhibition are available for review at the Council Administration Centre (Mullumbimby), Bangalow Post Office, Chincogan Real Estate Ocean Shores, Suffolk Beachfront Holiday Park and Brunswick Heads Library.

PUBLIC NOTICE Sewer Main Upgrade – Bangalow Road Work will commence in October 2014 to replace part of the existing sewer main under Bangalow Road. The site is located 600m west of Bangalow Post Office. Minor traffic delays are likely during construction. This new sewerage main will be constructed entirely underground and is designed to improve existing sewerage flows from Bangalow township to the sewerage treatment plant.
