A local artist created Jesus Running On Water as an adornment to the creek near his home. It makes sense. Why would Jesus always walk? There must have been times when he went for a good run just to get away from his fawning disciples.

Those older travelling folk, the Grey Nomads, are copping the fallout from the vanpackers who think that defecating on local street verges is a responsible thing to do. Read the concern at http:// bit.ly/greydef and watch the

Random defecators also get a passing mention in Michael McDonald’s comment piece on page 14, in which he sinks the paisley slipper into mayor Simon Richardson’s gross misuse of the English language in a media release. On the page following we say farewell to Stephen Brouwer, a fellow reptile of the press, who had a long and distinguished career as a leftie thorn in the side of pomposity, as well as being a dab hand at gardening.

Sadly, Byron Bay still holds the record by a long way for the most number of DUI offences on the north coast, its 284 offences between November 2012 and October 2013 way ahead of Lismore’s 124. A lot of it we could put down to overexcited visitors though we suspect the locals are not free of blame. Mullum at 27 offences and Brunswick Heads at 20 are a lot more restrained in their drinking habits – or at least a lot better than Byronites at avoiding the RBT.

There were a few good April Fools jokes going around last Tuesday. We assume readers recognised ours. Others included Kogan’s Drone Broadband Network to replace the NBN and a hoax letter purportedly from Metgasco, declaring it won’t go where it’s not wanted and would respect the wishes of the locals. Unfortunately Mr Metgasco, Peter Henderson, said he did not take the hoax email lightly: ‘I do take exception in the company’s logo being used and will be pursuing appropriate avenues in response.’ In fact it’s been reported to ASIC. Now The Echo would probably be a bit pissed off if anyone used our logo without permission, but in this case it’s obviously an April Fools joke. Metgasco’s bloody-mindedness is the very attitude that has endeared the company to north coast residents.
