Mark Colvin of ABC’s PM reports that ‘evidence has emerged that the NSW government considered giving public servants greater powers to deal with protesters opposed to coal seam gas drilling’. The Greens found that out under freedom of information laws, but Greens MP David Shoebridge says he’s been denied access to letters from Metgasco to the government. Documents include a letter to Metgasco from Tweed MP Geoff Provest, in which he thanks Metgasco for their ‘letters’. David Shoebridge wanted to see those letters, but it seems they’ve gone missing. Farewell to ‘The Big Root’, as one wag dubbed it: Council is removing John Dahlsen’s ‘Monumental Environmental Artwork’ from the Byron Bay beachfront because ‘weevils and wood-boring weevils and fungi associated with wood rot’ don’t appreciate art and have made it unsafe. Funny, we thought camphor laurel kept away the bugs. The Big Root was winner of the People’s Choice Award
and loathing in some people; we’re not sure why. For those offended by his online presence, a compassionate soul has released stoptonymeow.com, a browser extension that replaces photos of Tony with pictures of cute kittens. Who would’ve thought, cute kittens on the internet. Q Q Q Q
Byron Council has done away with those pesky Questions sessions, in which individuals ask questions so embarrassing they have to be taken on notice, and Fast Buck$ is one punter who was not impressed by the move. Last time we ran a picture of FB$ with a sign was probably when he appeared outside mayor Tom Wilson’s cafe in Byron Bay with ‘Leak Soup’. Photo Jeff ‘Operational Matters’ Dawson
at the 2010 ArtsCape Biennial and winner of the 2010 Swell Sculpture prize for Environmental Art at Currumbin. See more of John’s fungus-friendly work at johndahlsen.com.

Macquarie Dictionary’s new word of the year accurately describes some of our drudges’ preoccupations. Infovore: ‘a person who craves information, especially one who takes advantage of their ready access to it on digital devices.’ And an honourable mention went to cli-fi, ‘the genre of speculative fiction based on the premise that climate change will give rise to fundamental changes in the way human beings live’ – which may not be cli-fi for long.
