The friendly sport of darts

Brunswick Valley Darts Club is looking for new members. They play every Wednesday night at the Mullumbimby Services Club, at 7.30pm. Currently they are a social club and run an in-house competition. Everyone over the age of 18 is welcome, and beginners can have coaching from the existing players. The club offers a bus ser-

vice to the surrounding areas, so transport need not be a problem. Supper is also provided. They have a cash incentive each week, which jackpots if there is no winner. The club holds three charity days each year, competing with Tweed Valley Darts Club and Iluka. There is also an annual challenge match with the darts club at Sherwood in

Queensland. These events are a lot of fun and give players the opportunity to meet other like-minded people and raise money for local charities. ‘We have a lot of fun’, says Diane Paynter. ‘As we are a social club, there is no pressure to be an expert player.’ The cost each week is just $5. Enquiries can be made at the Mullum Services Club.

Mullum’s run of holes-in-one Paul de Fina could hardly believe his eyes when he sank the ball straight off the 9th tee at Mullum golf course. Over the moon after a great shot, Paul was extra chuffed when he realised it was worth $522 courtesy of Bill Nicholls Accountants, who have been a long time sponsor of the 9th hole. ‘I won’t be spending it on golf clubs’, said Paul. ‘I’m very happy with the way these ones are working for me’. Paul used his 3-wood for the shot. ‘It’s the closest I’ve come to a hole-in-one; prior to this I was landing it on the green, however nowhere near the hole.’ ‘Two other members also scored a hole-in-one in December – Sam Ridgewell and Richard Long’, said club director, Debbie Cullen. ‘It’s quite unusual to have that many in a few months, show-

Mullum junior league ready to take off It’s the time of year when local parents enjoy a leisurely Saturday morning sleep-in, but not for too much longer – the junior rugby league season is about to start, with registrations now being accepted.

Mullumbimby Junior Rugby League Football club has a proud history within the Brunswick Valley region and it doesn’t look like that will change any time soon. Last year they fielded more than 160 players between the

ages of 4 and 16 and they’re aiming for bigger and better things this year. If you’d like to register or find out more, call Tracey Brooke on 0403 503 087 or email mullumbimbygiantsjrl@gmail.com.

The combined clubs of the Northern Rivers Junior AFL turned out in force on Saturday for a sign-on full of fun and games with players from the Gold Coast Suns. The Suns, who are our closest AFL side with their home ground at Metricon Stadium at Carrara, took the opportunity to head south and check out the local talent on show at the Byron Regional Sport and Cultural Complex. Suns’ player Nathan Bock said he loves the opportunity to watch juniors up close. ‘It’s always great to assist the local clubs and of course meet the future stars of our game’, said Bock. ‘You never know, some of these kids could one day be playing on Metricon Stadium for the Gold Coast Suns.’ Photo Tree Faerie

The Gaffiti Faeries and other volunteer ordinary humans have been busy out at the Mullumbimby Brunswick Valley Football Club ground in Pine Avenue. Vollies and parents from the club are currently busy renovating and painting the clubhouse, toilets and canteen ready for the season ahead, and the place has spruced up a treat. To help them along, some-

time during the night last week under the stealth of a new moon and a drizzly cover the Graffiti Faeries came and went as only they can. Fortunately, what they left in their wake was a lovely mural which only adds to the fantastic energy being created around the club as they prepare for another successful on-field campaign. On Saturday February 22 the MBVFC are having an

open day from 10am to 2pm at the club fields with mini games – uniforms will be available on the day and assistance with the rego process for those who need it. On Sunday February 23 there will be a mufti bowls club fundraiser at the Brunswick Bowlo from 8am until late. Everyone is invited to join in and play bowls, share a breakfast and raise some money for the club.

Junior footballers Sol and Jaber, who will play for the Mullumbimby Madness 9s this year, were very pleased to see the results of the Graffiti Faeries’ work at the field when they went down for a working bee on Saturday. Photo Tree Faerie
