Byron Shire maximises recycling efforts This week is National Recycling Week, providing an opportunity to review the year in recycling and promote plans for new services in Byron to maximise resource recovery. Plans are in place to introduce a whole new range of recycling services – including fluorescent light globes (ie the energy savers), polystyrene and household batteries.

Battery World offers the only national opportunity to recycle, or responsibly dispose of dead batteries. Over 8,000 tonnes of batteries go into landfill each year. Many are made from heavy metals and harmful elements such as nickel, cadmium, lead and mercury. The Battery World Community Recycling Program have since recycled over 6,000 tonnes of lead acid and other types of batteries. Recycle with us today! into compost and be available for addition to our soils to add valuable nutrients to produce healthy food and gardens.

A bin composition survey conducted last year confirmed that half of what is in our red-lid rubbish bins is food scraps and garden cuttings. At present, these organics go straight into landfill. What a terrible waste. But the solution is on the horizon!

Kylie Bott, resource recovery officer, says, ‘The experience of our neighbouring councils in introducing green organics bins has been very positive and we are confident that the Byron Shire community will become part of this new solution to further improve recycling and help our environment’.

Byron Shire residents living in single dwellings will receive a new kerbside green bin for food and garden organics towards the middle of next year. These valuable resources will be turned

Battery World & Recycling Battery World offers the only national opportunity for the mums, dads and kids of Australia to recycle, or responsibly dispose of, dead batteries,* of any kind. (*Offer is for disposal of domesticusage batteries.) More than 8,000 tonnes of batteries go into landfill each year. Batteries are one of the most dangerous common wastes discarded by Australian households. Many are made from heavy metals and harmful elements such as nickel, cadmium, lead and mercury, which can pollute soil and water and harm wildlife and humans. Since the Battery World Community Recycling Program was initiated, more than 6,000 tonnes of lead-acid and other types of batteries have already entered the recycling process. That’s enough to fill the Sydney Cricket Ground 10 times over! Plus more than 36,000 analog EPIRBs have been collected for recycling since the digital changeover legislation. 19 Three Chain Rd South

diverted from landfill last year, proving that recycling is becoming a social norm,’ says Kylie Bott, resource recovery officer. ‘However, in a recent region-wide bin composition survey, we found that 10 per cent of materials going into the yellowlid recycling bin should not be there. The main culprit of contamination in the recycling bin is the plastic bag.

Recycling enemy: the plastic bag This week is National Recycling Week and Byron Shire Council congratulates residents for continuing to make recycling second nature. ‘More than 15,000 tonnes of recyclable materials were

‘Our message is to keep the bag out of your recycle bin. Even if it contains recyclable materials, and is biodegradable or degradable – it simply should not be there. Why? Plastic bags and soft scrunchy plastics jam expensive recycling machinery. This results in the plastic bag and its contents not being able to be recycled. So what can we do instead with our plastic bags? Re-use
