The NSW government has gone gung-ho in its attempts to protect people from taking substances which may have a psychoactive effect. Unfortunately the legislation parliament passed last week has holes in it ‘through which you could drive a meth lab on wheels’ – see story page 13. We’re all for protecting people from bad substances but it would seem more relevant to spend more time educating people not to buy drugs online or from people they don’t trust. And gosh, youngsters, don’t take drugs to large festivals – you’re bound to get a police dog nose in your crutch. And for those wishing to educate themselves on the effects of the nastier substances, the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of NSW has a wealth of resources at http:// ndarc.med.unsw.edu.au.

One of the more freaky substances must be propertydevelopment-induced hubris. The developer’s artficial high seems to affect cabinet ministers as well but fortunately last week NSW planning minister Brad (the) Hazzard stepped back from ramming through the new state planning laws. Hazzard admitted listening to public outrage and has changed the upcoming legislation so that councils will be able to modify the proposed statewide codes to better reflect their local area. Land zonings, appeal rights and local and state heritage protections will also continue as they are, he said. We’ll have to see it to believe it. Q Q Q Q

Photographer Sally F Greene reports: ‘Encouraging to see this little one crossing Beachcomber Drive, Byron Bay. Hastily climbed neighbour’s bangalow palm. I am also informed one was sitting in the middle of Bangalow Road the other night. So, look out for koalas – they are on the move.’
