SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL WEEKEND IS EVERYBODY’S FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR.
W
elcome to the 57th Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. Growing up in Winter Park, I always looked forward to the festival. Whether I was going with my family or with friends, it’s always been my favorite event of the year. Now, my children enjoy going with their friends. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival showcases 225 artists from all over the country, and occasionally from outside the United States. The beauty of the City of Winter Park and the temperate weather combine to make our show one-of-a-kind. Our three distinguished judges award $72,500 in prize money in Awards of Excellence, Distinction and Merit. There’s the Best of Show $10,000 purchase award, the $5,000 Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Art of Philanthropy award and the $2,500 Morse Museum Distinguished Work of Art award. More importantly, our artists compete for the honor of adding one of their pieces to your collection. Our all-volunteer board of directors works hard yearround to bring you a great show. We also have many community volunteers who perform a variety of jobs throughout the event. Plus, the City of Winter Park Police and Fire Departments and the Parks and Recreation Department work many long hours to ensure a successful event. We wouldn’t be able to put on the show without them.

The festival not only showcases the work of established artists, but seeks to contribute to the development of new artists. The Emerging Artists Program provides an opportunity for new artists who have never exhibited in an outdoor show. The Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit proudly displays artwork by talented Orange County students. This year, we have nine local museums providing hands-on activities for kids in the Children’s Workshop Village area. Easel painting is also available for young budding artists. Live music, sponsored by iHeart Radio, is ongoing throughout the weekend, with jazz saxophonist Steve Cole headlining for the popular Friday night concert. Vendors offer a delicious array of food throughout the park all weekend. Our Patron’s Program is committed to supporting artists through dedicated funds used to purchase their artwork at the festival. Please contact us if you’re interested in this beneficial and enjoyable program. We hope to continue to bring pleasure to those who have grown to love this event, while opening the eyes of those who’ve just come for the first time. We hope all will come back for years to come.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. The festival has been ranked by Sunshine Artist Magazine as the No. 1 Best Fine Art and Design Show in the Southeast in 2013 through 2015, and No. 5 in the nation in 2015. It was also ranked No. 2 in Art Fair Calendar’s 2015 list of America’s Best Juried Fine Art Fairs. The festival debuted in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. Today, the event is produced by an allvolunteer board and draws more than 350,000 visitors to Central Park. This year, more than 1,100 artists from around the world submitted applications and portfolios. An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists who are exhibiting their works. The festival is also consistently recognized as Central Florida’s Best Festival, by Orlando Magazine, and Best Winter Park Event/Festival by the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and the Winter Park/Maitland Observer.

Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival T-shirts and other memorabilia are available at two merchandise tents. The tents are located at the south entrance (Park and New England avenues) and at the center intersection (Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue). Artist and master printmaker John Costin created this year’s official poster, Snowy Egret. Costin specializes in hand-colored etchings of bird life. Posters will be sold at the south entrance and at the center intersection next to the large merchandise tents. A vintage merchandise tent will be located next to festival headquarters at Park Avenue and Morse Boulevard. After the event, you can still purchase current and past posters through wpsaf.org.
FAMILY FUN
The festival features a wide variety of fine arts and crafts in the following categories: clay, digital art, drawings and pastels, fiber, glass, graphics and printmaking, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media 2D, mixed media 3D, painting, photography, sculpture, watercolor and wood. There's a separate category for Emerging Artists.
Kids can create their own artwork at the Children’s Workshop Village. Easel painting is very popular, and local art centers and museums are offering a variety of fun, hands-on activities for budding artists. Admission to the Children’s Workshop Village is free, and participants may take home their works. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Easel painting is from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Artists compete for 63 awards totaling $72,500. The Best of Show is purchased for $10,000 by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board and donated to the City of Winter Park. Previous Best of Show winners are on permanent display at the Winter Park Public Library. A $5,000 Art of Philanthropy Purchase Award is sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation. In addition, a $2,500 Distinguished Work of Art Award is presented through the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. There are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.

Throughout the festival’s three-day run, you’ll find free entertainment presented on the main stage located in north Central Park. The music begins with a high-

Enjoy the festival while your bike is safely monitored. Located on Morse Boulevard across the street from the Amtrak Station parking lot, a free bike valet service is provided during festival hours by the Winter Park Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Board. he three judges for The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival were selected from across the country for their in-depth knowledge and experience. In October, they reviewed the digital images of all applicants to select the festival's artists and those who went on a wait list. On the festival’s opening day, the same panel will visit each booth to select artists that will be considered for awards. Selected artists will then each choose one piece that they feel best represents their body of work. These pieces will be delivered for final judging, which takes place on Saturday morning. From among these works will come the Best of Show, the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Award and the Morse Museum Award. Here are this year’s judges: Barbara Rogers has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at major galleries and museums in San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as Germany, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates. Her work is in major public and private collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Crocker Museum (Sacramento), the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Tucson Museum of Art, the Arizona State University Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum of Art, the San Jose Museum of Art and the University of Arizona Museum of Art. She graduated with a B.S. degree in art education from Ohio State University. She received the Eisner Prize and an M.A. in painting from the University of California at Berkeley. Rogers has been a faculty member or visiting artist at many major universities in the U.S. and abroad. After receiving numerous teaching awards, she retired in 2007 and is now professor emeritus of painting and drawing in the School of Art at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He previously served as director of the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University and, before that, the University of Maine Museum of Art. He has taught at Phillips Academy, Western Michigan University, the University of Vermont and the University of South Florida. Mason holds a B.A. from Beloit College and an M.F.A. from Indiana University. Mason has curated more than 50 exhibitions, and recently served as juror at The Water: Atlanta Celebrates Photography, in Atlanta. He has been portfolio reviewer for many other festivals, including FofoFest (Houston), Photolucida (Portland) and the Center for Fine Art Photography (Fort Collins, Colorado). Kelly Malec-Kosak is an artist in Columbus, Ohio, and is currently the chair of fine arts at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Her work has been featured nationally and internationally, most recently in Protective Ornament: Contemporary Armour to Amulet at the National Metal Museum and Reflection: 100 Years of Jewelry/Metal Arts at CCA (California College of the Arts) in Oakland. Malec-Kosak has received an Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council, and an international residency in Dresden, Germany, from the Greater Columbus Arts Council. In 2012, she traveled to Ravenstein, Netherlands, to study with Ruudt Peters and a group of international artists. Her work has been featured in several books, including Metalsmith: Humor in Craft, by Bridgette Martin, and On Body and Soul: Contemporary Armour to Amulet, by Suzanne Ramljak. She’s a graduate of Miami University with a B.A. in jewelry design and metalsmithing, and an M.F.A. in jewelry/metal arts from the California College of the Arts. Malec-Kosak has participated in solo, group, invitational and competitive exhibitions since 1995.

resident of Ybor City, poster artist John Costin has won acclaim for capturing the rich and diverse bird life of his home state. Although Winter Park's official mascot is a peacock, you're much more likely to see a snowy egret, such as the one shown on this year's poster. “These inquisitive birds use their crest of feathers to express their state of mind,” Costin says. “In this handcolored etching, I wanted to portray the snowy in a state of excitement, perhaps reacting to a viewer or a predator invading its space.” With a background in contemporary art, Costin creates complex and colorful life-size images of birds, showing the nuances specific to each species. “Through my art I strive to capture and personify birds, enriching the viewer’s perception of this particular form of wildlife,” he says. “The birds are presented in such a way that they’re aware of the viewer’s presence, and react to that confrontation. Their reaction reveals unique traits to the viewer, adding another level of understanding.” Notes Costin: “Ultimately, one’s sensitivity and awareness of these natural wonders could lead to a more profound perception of the world we all share.” While attending the University of South Florida, Costin studied Intaglio art, which piqued his interest in etching. He says etching is a way of combining graphics, painting, sculpture and engineering into one art form. “The medium has an extremely large range of possibilities, giving many directions for my imagination to explore,” Costin says. “The visual qualities are very enticing: Colors range from subtle to intense, black tones go from delicate to velvety black, and lines range from needle thin to broad and bold.” Etching is a complex process combining skills of painting, sculpture, printmaking and engineering. Starting with a polished plate of copper, the image is directly etched by hand on the plate, as if it were a canvas. This process takes from 6-8 weeks to complete. Then the plates are wiped down, by hand, with ink and printed on high-quality rag paper. Afterward, these printed images are painted with transparent watercolors for rich color quality and subtle detail, making each piece unique. Costin has been a professional artist since 1979,

exhibiting in numerous shows and winning awards throughout the south. His work can be found in collections at the Ferman Motor Car Company, General Motors Corporation, Yellow Freight, Eckerd College, USAA Insurance, the State Library of Florida, the University of Miami, Raymond James Financial, the Tampa Museum of Art and the Polk Museum of Art, to name a few. LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has proudly showcased the artists and art programs of Orange County and Winter Park public and private schools since the first festival in 1960. You’ll be amazed to see the unique works created by talented local students. The exhibit is named in memory of Leon Theodore, an artist, teacher, and former member and president of the art festival board. The student displays are located across the railroad tracks opposite the stage. This year’s panel of judges includes Susan Bach, a nationally known potter who creates at McRae Art Studios in Winter Park and teaches pottery; Sherri Bunye, a fine art and documentary photographer who teaches photography at Crealdé School of Art, and Laurence Vienneau, a studio art professor at Seminole State College. Awards for Best of Show, Excellence, Distinction, Merit and Honorable Mention will be presented. UCP of Florida and VSA Florida have been working with the festival to increase involvement and access to the exhibit and workshops for handicapped children. seven-week celebration of spring at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art begins with a three-day open house held in conjunction with The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The season of rebirth and renewal continues at the Morse with free admission, live music, tours and more on six consecutive Friday evenings, March 25 - April 29. Various musicians and musical groups will play from 5-8 p.m. on each of these Fridays. At 7 p.m., a Morse curator will lead a tour through the museum’s exhibition of the surviving art and architectural objects from Louis Comfort Tiffany’s celebrated Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. On April 8, programming also will include a family
tour of selected galleries and a demonstration about the art of leaded-glass windows as well as a free takehome art activity for children. In addition to the open house March 18-20, the museum also will offer free admission on Easter weekend, March 25-27. For a complete schedule of the museum’s spring events, visit morsemuseum.org. The Morse, located at 445 N. Park Avenue, is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). The Children’s Workshop Village is free, and open each day of the festival, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It’s located on the west side of the railroad tracks just north of Morse Boulevard near the post office. Be sure to bring an adult with you so they can sign you in. Easel painting is always a popular activity, with more than 1,000 children and families participating each year. Kids get to paint a picture using the huge, outdoor easels that have been a part of the festival for 30-plus years. Hours are from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, museum and community partners have prepared exciting, hands-on arts and crafts activities on all three days from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Committee believes children of all ages can develop a love and appreciation for art when they’re given the opportunity to explore their own creativity.

WINTER PARK’S ECOLOGICAL CROWN JEWEL
n 1937, an urbane Rollins College professor named Edwin Osgood Grover and an intrepid Rollins student named Jack Connery happened upon an unspoiled, 48-acre oasis in the heart of Winter Park. There they discovered a small lake and encountered deer, bobcats, wild boar and an alligator that they later estimated had to be at least 18 feet long. Undaunted, the duo decided that the mysterious morass should be transformed into a beautiful botanical garden that would pay tribute to their recently deceased friend, horticulturalist Theodore Luqueer Mead. Tucked away at the end of South Denning Drive, across the railroad tracks and bounded by Pennsylvania Avenue and Howell Creek, the garden has enchanted casual visitors and serious naturalists for generations. In recent years, the garden has quite literally blossomed thanks to an operating agreement between Mead Botanical Garden Inc., a nonprofit organization, and the City of Winter Park, which owns the land. Revitalized attractions include the Legacy Garden and Greenhouse and a charming Butterfly Garden. The Grove, a new amphitheater that features a 40-by-60-foot stage, hosts outdoor concerts in a magnificent setting. The Discovery Barn, formerly a city maintenance warehouse, features an array of activities for youngsters, including an annual Young Naturalist Summer Camp. At the Community Garden, weekend farmers can rent plots and grow their The Legacy Garden and own organic vegetables. Some of the produce is given to local food banks. Greenhouse at Mead Garden. A small pond has been restored and named “Alice’s Pond” in honor of volunteer Alice Mikkleson. The pond is traversed by “Rene’s Trail,” which was named in honor of volunteer Rene Kelly, who died in 2009. n annual tradition was started in 1969 when The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Best of Show winner was purchased by the Festival Committee and presented to the City of Winter Park as an expression of appreciation. You can see the display of past winners at the Winter Park Public Library, where you can take a self-guided tour using a Best of Show brochure. Or, you can go on a virtual tour by visiting the library’s website, wppl.org. From the menu bar on the home page, select the “Research” tab. ENTERTAINMENT STEVE COLE WITH SPECIAL GUEST JJ SANSAVERINO IHeart Radio is proud to present one of the most celebrated players in contemporary jazz as the festival’s Friday night headliner. Saxophonist Steve Cole, a Chicago native, exploded onto the scene in 1998 with the album Stay Awhile, which spawned two No. 1 hits and earned Cole the Oasis Smooth Jazz Award for Best New Artist. Two years later, his second album, Between Us, resulted in a run of radio hits including “NY LA,” “Spin” and “True.” In addition to his solo work, Cole has performed or recorded with Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Boz Scaggs, Larry Carlton, Jeff Lorber, Jim Peterik, Freddie Cole, Cyrus Chestnut, and KMFDM. He has also been a featured soloist with the City of Prague Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Cole is a founding member of The Sax Pack, a stellar sax trio with Marcus Anderson and Jeff Kashiwa. His latest release, Pulse, is a mix of R&B, contemporary jazz, gospel, blues and pop. Joining Cole will be special guest guitarist JJ Sansaverino, an accomplished composer, arranger and musical director whose hit singles include “Back Talk” and “Gravy Train.”
DAYVE STEWART Dayve Stewart, one of the world’s most popular jazz saxophonists, will warm up the Friday night crowd. Passionate and versatile in every way, Stewart pushes musical boundaries with his signature blend of jazz, R&B and funk. He has toured with Al Green; Elton John; Anita Baker; Earth, Wind & Fire; and B.B. King. He has collaborated with jazz musicians Jamison Ross, Marcus Roberts and The Clayton Brothers. Stewart has also performed with jazz masters Dee Dee Bridgewater, Wynton Marsalis, Brian Culbertson, Kirk Whalum, Paul Brown, Najee and R&B singer Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), who reveres Stewart as “one of the most exciting players in music today.” Stewart is currently in the studio working on his new album, Feels So Good. “The feeling that I’m able to pour out of my saxophone comes from a place only unique to me,” he says. “I embody that classic underdog story. I’m a person who works hard, who finds inspiration in everything around me, and who takes all challenges as learning lessons and repurposes those experiences into something beautiful.”
TIJUANA BRASS TRIBUTE WITH THE GREG PARNELL SEPTET
A Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, native, Greg Parnell spent many years on the road with the Glenn Miller Orchestra as drummer and road manager. Now living in Sanford, Florida, with his wife, Amy, he enjoys performing in a wide variety of settings, from big bands and small jazz groups to backing famous headliners. He’s also vice president of Glenn Miller Productions. WUCF is proud to co-host Sunday afternoon’s performance of the Tijuana Brass Tribute, which will include such classics as “The Lonely Bull,” “The Mexican Shuffle,” “Whipped Cream,” “A Taste of Honey,” “Tijuana Taxi,” “Spanish Flea” and many others. EMERGING ARTISTS
UP-AND-COMERS IN THE
T
he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Emerging Artist Program, founded in 1977, encourages new artists to participate in the world of outdoor festivals at no cost. Emerging Artists, who are selected through the same juried process as all of the event’s participating artists, will have the opportunity to make sales and get feedback from art patrons and judges. While Emerging Artists aren’t eligible for prizes, the exposure and the experience is invaluable. This year, three artists were selected for the program.
ERIC EYERLY
Eric Eyerly, a photographer based in Minneola, was born and raised in Clermont, in Lake County. His interest in photography started when he received a 35 mm camera as a gift and took a high school photography class. He immediately fell in love with the genre. He studied photography at the Southeast Center for Photographic Arts and Ohio University, where he earned his B.F.A. “I’ve always been interested in documenting what man builds, and what happens to it when abandoned or left behind,” Eyerly says. PATRICK MCKINNON
Patrick McKinnon says he’s always been an artist at heart. He earned a B.F.A. from UCF, but says the necessity of making a living caused him to put art on the back burner. “But life has a way of redirecting your focus,” he says. “I found my bread and butter in home building. Subconsciously, it became the outlet that would encourage my working with wood.” Soon he purchased his first lathe, and it took about three years learning how to use the equipment — and about the nuances of woodworking. “As I worked with and discovered the exotic woods, their grains and textures motivated my desire to showcase their natural beauty,” he says. Johana Toro came to Orlando 16 years ago from Caracas, Venezuela. She began making sacred geometry art as a hobby while working as a civil engineering designer. Her work starts with paper, which is painted and hand cut with the same dedication and passion that she uses in her drawings. Toro’s designs are inspired by ancient symbology, crop circles, natural patterns, geometry, physics and math. She plans to learn more about other techniques and to explore new mediums.
