Extravaganza A WORLD-CLASS ART
T
he first Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival was held in March 1960. Local amateurs and professionals exhibited their art on easels set up along Park Avenue’s sidewalks, as shown on the cover of the 1964/1965 Winter Park Telephone Company phone book, shown above. Now, 225 artists from across the nation compete for more than $100,000 in prize money, patron purchase awards, the Charles Hosmer Morse Foundation Award and the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Award. The festival attracts the very best artists to Winter Park, and our community shows its appreciation through its patronage. The City of Winter Park helped organize the festival in the early years, and continues today to donate substantial time and materials. Thanks to the city, to our generous sponsors and to our thousands of volunteers, participating artists rank The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival among the

top fine-art shows in Florida and across the U.S. From our first chairperson, Jean Oliphant, down through the decades, many Winter Parkers have devoted themselves to raising our community’s appreciation of art and music to its highest level. The participating juried artists are our main focus, but we also put a strong emphasis on children and students who’ll be the artists of the future. The festival’s Children’s Workshop Village, Student Art Exhibits and Emerging Artists Program are supported by a grant from the Galloway Foundation. We’ve enhanced accessibility for special-needs children this year. And, as we do every year, we've contributed art scholarships to Rollins College and UCF. To our artists, contributors, supporters, patrons and volunteers we say, “Thank you. It’s time to buy art!”

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Named America’s Best Juried Fine Art Fair (Art Fair Calendar, 2013 and 2014), The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. It is also ranked as the No. 1 Best Fine Art and Design Show in the Southeast by Sunshine Artist Magazine (2013 and 2014). The festival debuted in March, 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. The annual event is produced by an all-volunteer board and draws more than 350,000 visitors each year. This year, more than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for entry. An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists exhibiting their works. The festival is also recognized as “Central Florida’s Best Festival,” Orlando Magazine (2013 and 2014); and “Best Winter Park Event/ Festival,” The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and Winter Park / Maitland Observer (2013 and 2014).
CATEGORIES
The festival features a wide variety of fine arts and crafts in the following categories: clay, digital art, drawings and pastels, fiber, glass, printmaking, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media 2D, mixed media 3D, painting, photography, sculpture, watercolor and wood as well as Emerging Artists.
AWARDS
Artists complete for 63 awards totaling $72,500. The Best of Show winner is purchased for $10,000 by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board and donated to the City of Winter Park. Previous Best of Show winners are on permanent display at the Winter Park Public Library. A $5,000 Art of Philanthropy Purchase Award is sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation. A $2,500 Distinguished Work of Art Award is presented through The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. There are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.
MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT
Throughout the festival you’ll find free entertainment presented on the stage located in north Central Park, starting with a powerhouse concert on Friday night. This year’s headliner will be Sisaundra Lewis, a jazz and soul singer whose electrifying performances took her to the final rounds of NBC’s The Voice in season six. MERCHANDISE
Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival T-shirts and other memorabilia are available for sale at three merchandise tents. The tents are located at the south entrance (Park and New England avenues), at the center intersection (Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue), and at the north entrance (Park and Garfield avenues). This year’s poster, Emily’s Light, is a watercolor created by artist John Carollo with a technique he calls “controlled chaos.” It’s an interpretation of sculptor Albin Polasek’s Emily statue, a reproduction of which adorns a fountain in Winter Park’s North Central Park (the original can been seen at the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens). Posters will be sold at the south entrance and the center intersection next to the large merchandise tents. A vintage merchandise tent will be located next to the festival headquarters at Park Avenue and Morse Boulevard. After the event is over, you can still purchase this year’s poster and past posters at wpsaf.org.
FAMILY FUN
Youngsters can create their own artwork at the Children’s Workshop Village. Easel painting is very popular, and local art centers and museums offer a variety of fun, hands-on art activities for kids. Admission is free and participants may take home their artistic creations. Children’s Workshop Village hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Easel painting is from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT
The place to discover talented artists of the next generation is at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, where artwork created by Orange County students is on display (see map, page 11). The imagination and expertise displayed by these young artists will delight and amaze you. Be sure to check out this wonderful exhibit.
COMPLIMENTARY BIKE VALET
Enjoy the festival while your bike is safely monitored. Located on Morse Boulevard across the street from the Amtrak Station parking lot, a free bike valet service is provided during festival hours by the Winter Park Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Board (see map, page 11).

ach year, The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival judging panel consists of three independent judges from across the U.S., each renowned for his or her artistic credentials in various genres. In October of last year, the judges reviewed digital images from more than 1,100 applicants to select the 225 artists, along with three Emerging Artists, who would be invited to display their work. On the festival’s opening day, panelists separately visit each booth and select representative works that will move ahead to final judging. On Saturday morning, those pieces are assembled and evaluated by the group, and a consensus is reached on the winners. Emerging Artists were juried, but are not eligible for awards. The Best of Show, the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation Award and the Morse Museum Award are presented for individual works. Awards are presented solely at the discretion of the judges. This year’s judges: Kate Maury received a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She lives in St. Paul, Minn., and is a full-time professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Most

recently, she completed a residency at the International Ceramics School in Kecskemét, Hungary. Phyllis Stapler earned a BFA in drawing and painting from the University of Georgia. She became known for her performance-art pieces in Athens, Atlanta and New York City. Her paintings of animals and plants are nationally recognized for their deductive compositions and flattened forms. She served as an artist in residence for the state of Georgia until 1996, when she relocated to Albuquerque, N.M. She remains in the Southwest, where she’s inspired daily by the abundance of wildlife she sees from her studio windows. Blair Ward Doubet received an MFA in ceramics from the University of Oregon after completing undergraduate majors in art and philosophy. After teaching at Carl Sandburg College, he studied modern art history and contemporary art theory, and taught the history of art and history of ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Doubet then taught ceramics, design and art history at North Dakota State University, where he was coordinator for art and served as interim chairperson for the Department of Music and Art. He came to Tennessee Tech’s Appalachian Center for Craft in 1990, where he served as director until 2002. He’s now a TTU professor of art for foundations, teaching drawing and basic design.

ohn Carollo began studying watercolor at the University of North Texas under internationally renowned artist Rob Erdle. His initial goal of producing realistic works changed after a summer study trip to Europe. During that journey, and continuing upon his return, Carollo’s work took on an increasingly expressive, stylistic flair, conveying the mood, emotion and essence of a scene rather than a literal representation. His loose, free-flowing style allows the water and paint to often move on its own with minor guidance. It’s a technique he calls “controlled chaos.” The end result showcases watercolor’s unique properties of translucency and atmospheric effect. Since 2005, Carollo has shown his work at numerous venues in Texas and Georgia as well as Central Florida. Locally, exhibitions have been staged at the CityArts Factory, the Maitland Art Center, and the Mount Dora Center for the Arts as well as through a collaboration with Voci, a modern dance company. In 2007 and 2012, Carollo was awarded prestigious United Arts of Central Florida Artist Development Grants for his work with large-scale (over 6 feet) watercolor pieces and 3D kinetic sculpture. The latter area has been a continuing source of exploration for Carollo; his work has evolved from shaped paper-and-wire constructions to large suspended pieces created from hand-painted silk, twisted aluminum and stainless steel. Beginning in 2010, much of Carollo’s creative energy has gone into The Figure As Vehicle, a traveling, twoperson collaborative exhibition with sculptor Marsha De Broske that encompasses nearly 50 works, all of which feature the human figure in various interpretations. “The show portrays the body as a vehicle for conveying messages to the viewer through mood, contemplation, personal connection and understanding,” Carollo says. Carollo, who now lives and creates in Orlando, recently purchased property along Lake Killarney. He'll bring his studio back to Winter Park this year.

LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has proudly showcased the artists and art-education programs of Orange County public and private schools since the event debuted in 1960. At the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, you’ll be amazed at the unique artwork created by these talented local students. The exhibit is named in memory of Leon Theodore, an artist, teacher and former member and president of the festival board. The student displays are located across the railroad tracks, opposite the stage. This year’s distinguished judges for highschool art are Kristin Congdon, a retired UCF professor of humanities and an expert on folk art, and Michael Galletta, a Valencia College professor of art and director of the school’s ceramics, sculpture and drawing program. MORSE MUSEUM CELEBRATE SPRING WITH A FREE OPEN HOUSE AT THE MORSE

A
six-week celebration of spring at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art begins with a free, three-day open house held in conjunction with The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The season of rebirth and renewal continues at the Morse with free admission, live music, tours and more on five consecutive Friday evenings, March 27 through April 24, when musicians and musical groups will play from 5 to 8 p.m. At 7 p.m., a Morse curator will lead a tour through the museum’s exhibition of the art and architectural objects that survive from Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Long Island home, Laurelton Hall. On April 10, programming also includes a family tour
of selected galleries and a demonstration on the art of leaded-glass windows and a free take-home art activity for children. In addition to the art festival and Friday night open houses, the museum also will offer free admission on Easter weekend April 3 through 5. CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP VILLAGE KIDS' ACTIVITIES NURTURE ARTISTS OF TOMORROW

ey kids! Join the fun and create a unique piece of artwork that you can take home and share with your family and friends. The Children’s Workshop Village is open each day of the festival — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — and it’s free. It’s located on the west side of the railroad tracks, just north of Morse Boulevard near the post office. Be sure to bring an adult with you so they can sign you in. Easel painting is always a popular activity, with more than 1,000 children and families participating each year. Kids get to paint a picture using the huge, outdoor easels that have been a part of the festival for 30-plus years. Easel painting hours are from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, museum and community partners are offering exciting, hands-on arts and crafts activities on all three days from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Commission believes that children of all ages can develop a love and appreciation for art when they’re given an opportunity to explore their own creativity. The festival thanks United Cerebral Palsy and VSA Florida for expanding that opportunity this year by organizing a field trip to the event for disabled children. BEAUTIFUL 'EMILY' IS A CENTRAL PARK ICON
undreds of thousands of visitors to The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival will stroll past a bronze sculpture of a female figure playing the harp that for 30 years has been the centerpiece of Central Park’s Emily Fountain. Iconic Emily was also the cover model for this year’s festival poster. Many will admire the work’s tranquil beauty, and delight at how the woman’s delicate fingers are poised to pluck at harp strings formed by sprays of water. But fewer will know the back story. The original Emily was created by sculptor Albin Polasek (1879-1965) as a wedding gift for his second wife Emily Muska Polasek. The sculptor, who was born in Moravia (now the Czech Republic), moved to Winter Park in 1950. His lakeside home is now the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens. Emily, whom Polasek married in 1961, was a vibrant Winter Park resident and leader in the arts community. She died in 1988 and was buried alongside her husband at Winter Park’s Palm Cemetery. The original Emily is on display at the museum. The Central Park version is a bronze reproduction that was a gift to the City of Winter Park from the Albin Polasek Foundation and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The presentation was made in 1984 to honor the festival’s 25th anniversary. THE FOUNDATION FOUNDATION SUPPORTS EDUCATION AND APPRECIATION
T
he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation Inc. provides grants to promote community appreciation of the arts and supports art education through scholarships and programs. The foundation supports the Children’s Workshop Village, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, the Emerging Artists Program, the Image Review Workshop and Performing Arts at The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. It also funds the Jean Alice Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida. This year, three scholarships were awarded at Rollins and three at UCF to students pursuing art-related majors. The foundation has received funding in 2014-15 from donations by the Winter Park-based Galloway Foundation, the Rotary Club of Winter Park and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. This year, United Cerebral Palsy and VSA Florida contributed resources to the Children's Workshop Village to make it more accessible to handicapped children. The festival’s board of directors contributed $10,000 to the foundation’s scholarship fund this year in memory of Mike Enoch, Lynn Hough, Rick Lang and Brian Phaneuf for their contributions to the longevity and success of the event. LIBRARY SHOWCASES PAST TOP PRIZE-WINNERS
n annual tradition was started in 1969, when The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Best of Show work was purchased by the Festival Committee and presented to the City of Winter Park as an expression of appreciation. This year, the prize-winning piece will be purchased from the artist for $10,000. It will be displayed along with the past winners at the Winter Park Public Library. Back in 1960, during the first festival, winning wasn’t as lucrative. The Best of Show, selected by a vote of festivalgoers, was an oil painting by Arnold Loren Hicks of DeLand. His grand prize was $40, which he promptly returned to the festival to help support the next year’s show. Hicks’ image of moss-laden trees along a shoreline had deteriorated over the years, prompting the festival to commission a replica, which was presented to the library. This true-to-life photographic reproduction was produced by Shelley Lake of Sky Lake Studios and framed by Baxter Matthews of Florida Frame House Gallery. You can see the winners over the years at the library. ENTERTAINMENT SISAUNDRA LEWIS Sisaundra Lewis is an accomplished artist who rose to stardom and gained global recognition after delivering showstopping performances on season six of NBC’s The Voice!’ Lewis’ accomplishments include appearances with Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion. Over the years, she’s also worked with such performers as Michael Bolton, George Duke, Sheila E., Gloria Estefan, Enrique Iglesias, Janet Jackson and Patti LaBelle. For 10 years, Lewis was the featured performer in Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba. And her singing is showcased in the Oscar-nominated documentary, Sustaining Life, which she also narrated. You’ve probably heard Lewis and not even realized it. Her unmistakable voice has graced commercials for Folgers, Sprite, Sears and Arby’s, to name a few. Her debut single, “Shout,” rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. Lewis, a mother of three, isn’t slowing down. Her recently launched Sisaundra Lewis Foundation is one of the ways the singer demonstrates her passion for helping others. Lewis has Polk County roots. The youngest of eight children, she grew up singing at Pillar of Zion and Church of God in Lake Hamilton, where her father, the Rev. Obie Lewis, was the pastor. She graduated from Haines City High School in 1987.
KENNY MACKENZIE
Known for their true jazz style, the Kenny MacKenzie Trio has played weekly gigs at such esteemed jazz venues as New York City’s Arthur’s Tavern, Louis 649 and Café Creole, to name a few, with spotlight performances at Kavehaz, Birdland and Triad. Originally from Long Island, MacKenzie's keyboard prowess has attracted collaborators that include some of the best players in the Big Apple’s thriving jazz scene. For performances in Florida, MacKenzie has formed a new trio with a stellar lineup. Bassist John Pellegrinio has worked with a who’s who of jazz legends, including Mel Torme, Zoot Simms, Clark Terry, Sammy Davis Jr., The Dorsey Brothers, Hendrix & Ross, Urbie Green, Dave McKenna and even Willie “The Lion” Smith. The drum chair rotates between in-demand musicians such as Ray Winer, Jay Messick and Barry Smith. Improvisational, relaxed and crisp are words that sum up the sounds of the Kenny MacKenzie Trio.
MATT WEIHMULLER Matt Weihmuller is a jazz saxophonist who earned his B.A. and his M.A. in music from Florida State University. He was a member of the FSU Jazz Ensemble I and, as a member of various jazz combos, was a regular performer at various Tallahassee venues. Weihmuller recently relocated to the Tampa area, where he’s the saxophone and jazz instructor at the Patel Conservatory at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts. He also tours with several groups playing music in a variety of genres. Those groups include the Matt Weihmuller Jazz Trio and Quartet, Phase Five and UNRB, a seven-piece band whose repertoire includes elements of funk, jazz, rock and reggae. He performs locally with other jazz ensembles and wedding bands when his schedule permits. Weihmuller is also a composer, and uses specialized music technology for the blind. EMERGING ARTISTS
UP-AND-COMERS IN THE
T
he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Emerging Artist Program, founded in 1977, encourages new artists to participate in the world of outdoor festivals at no cost. Emerging Artists, who are selected through the same juried process as all of the event’s participating artists, will have the opportunity to make sales and get feedback from art patrons and judges. While Emerging Artists aren’t eligible for prizes, the exposure and the experience is invaluable. This year, three artists were selected for the program.
TOM CALANO
Tom Calano, “T.C.” for short, fell in love with photography at age 11, when his grandparents introduced him to the magic of instant Polaroid images. Calano spent 25 years as an engineering CAD design professional in the aerospace, manufacturing, entertainment and energy industries. Initially, the work drew him away from his childhood passion. Then, when he began using photography in his work, the passion was reignited. With the Polaroid now a relic, Calano today shoots with a Nikon D300, capturing life, people and the world at large while creating art along the way. In addition to photography, Calano loves playing the trumpet, outdoor adventure, antique cars and bowling. He also enjoys great conversation and loves hearing other peoples’ stories — so stop by his booth and share a good story with him. NANCY GRIST
Born and raised in the Midwest, Grist studied fine art at the University of Wisconsin as well as architecture and sculpture at the University of Minnesota, where she received her Masters of Architecture degree in 2000. A “maker” her whole life, Grist now complements her architectural practice with a healthy dose of creative expression, working primarily in pastel. 38 56TH WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
Influenced by her interests in architecture and sailing, her gestural approach focuses on understanding figural and structural form, qualities of light and color and subjects at play. She’s inspired by the fresh waters of inland lakes and the people who enjoy them, exploring ideas of balance, strength of center and connection through the use of poised form in play, pursuit or prayer. Grist lives, sails and paints in Minneapolis. Now that her daughters are off to college, she enjoys devoting more time to her artistic practice. Hometown: Minneapolis, Minn. SPENCER WARLICK
A Florida boy at heart, Warlick grew up surrounded by the landscape and wildlife that he loves and, above all, loves to photograph, capturing rare and unexpected moments. Warlick’s passion for all things Florida began when he was very young. “My childhood was pretty simple,” he says. “The hours I wasn’t in school were spent outside, and the hours I spent in school were spent staring out the window wishing I was outside.” He says he “truly embraced what Florida had to offer growing up; there was never a dull moment, and I most certainly never had a reason to be indoors.” Warlick graduated from Winter Park High School and earned his degree in historic preservation and community planning from the College of Charleston. While living in the Low Country, he fostered his love of architecture and knack for designing homes. He currently owns his own design/build firm, Warlick Design & Construction, in Winter Park.
