TO THE 55 WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL TH
I
f the shops and businesses of Winter Park are its heartbeat, I think of The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival as its soul. Set in a city that prides itself on its dedication to art and culture, the festival was conceived back in 1960 to bring art and the community together for the benefit of both. The setting is springtime, the streets lined with quaint shops, outdoor cafes, magnificent trees and flowering plants. It all comes alive for three days with the work of 225 of the nation’s top artists and approximately 350,000 enthusiastic art lovers. Few events in Central Florida generate as much anticipation or excitement. I have a passion for history, art and Winter Park, so you can imagine what an honor it is to oversee The 55th Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. Our all-volunteer board works year round to provide a memorable experience for both the artists and the attendees. Along with the juried fine artists who are competing for $72,500 in awards, we present a free Friday night concert and performing arts at the Main Stage in North Central Park. We also offer easel painting and museum activities for kids at the Children’s Workshop Village, displays featuring outstanding young artists from area schools at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit and showcases for three emerging artists who are experi-

encing their first outdoor art show. Plus, you’ll discover delicious food along Morse Boulevard and throughout Central Park. A tradition for many of our festival regulars is buying the annual poster and T-shirt. This year’s beautiful poster art, an oil painting by Bill Farnsworth, is a scenic view of Lake Maitland from the shoreline of Kraft Azalea Garden. It salutes the natural beauty that is the foundation of Winter Park, with its abundant trees, lakes and wildlife. Be sure to visit our merchandise tent while you’re here, or our website when you get home. The support and help provided by the City of Winter Park is key to the festival’s longevity. A special thank you goes to the Parks and Recreation Department, the Police Department, the Fire-Rescue Department and all of the wonderful city employees. Thanks also to our many community volunteers, members of our Patrons Program, our sponsors, the artists and the faithful attendees. I hope you have a wonderful visit to the festival, and that your time here will mark the start of your own yearly tradition every March.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Named America’s Best Juried Fine Art Fair by Art Fair Calendar (2013), The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. It’s also ranked as the No. 1 Best Fine Art and Design Show in the southeast by Sunshine Artist Magazine (2013). The festival debuted in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. Produced by an all-volunteer board, it draws more than 350,000 visitors each year. This year, more than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for entry. An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists, as well as three Emerging Artists, to exhibit their works. The festival is also recognized as Central Florida’s Best Festival by Orlando Magazine (2013), a Can’t-Miss Arts Event by Orlando Life (2013) and Best Winter Park Festival/Event by the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and the Winter Park/Maitland Observer.
CATEGORIES
The festival features a wide variety of fine arts and crafts in the following categories: Clay, Digital Art, Drawings and Pastels, Fiber, Glass, Graphics and Printmaking, Jewelry, Leather, Metal, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Watercolor and Wood.
AWARDS
Artists complete for 63 awards totaling $72,500. The Best of Show winner is purchased for $10,000 by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board and donated to the City of Winter Park. All previous Best of Show winners are on permanent display at the Winter Park Public Library. A $5,000 Art of Philanthropy Purchase Award is sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation (see page 22). A $2,500 Distinguished Work of Art Award is presented through the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art (see page 21). There are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.
MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT
All entertainment is free and presented on the Main Stage in north Central Park. To see a list of performers and the show schedule, see page 31.
MERCHANDISE
Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival posters, t-shirts and other memorabilia are available at the merchandise tent located in the middle of Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue. This year’s poster, Southern Breeze, is a painting by Bill Farnsworth that depicts a scene from Winter Park’s Kraft Azalea Garden. It embodies old Florida charm with its giant cypress trees and the flora and fauna of Lake Maitland. New this year, a vintage merchandise tent will be adjacent to the merchandise sales tent on Morse Boulevard. There you may purchase posters, Tshirts and note cards from past festivals. After the festival is over, you can still purchase posters from the current year and past years by visiting wpsaf.org.
FAMILY FUN
Girls and boys can create their own artwork at the Children’s Workshop Village (see map, page 10). Easel painting is very popular, and local art centers and museums feature a variety of fun, hands-on art activities for children. Admission is free and participants may take home their creations. The Children’s Workshop Village hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Easel painting is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT
Aspiring young artists give festival attendees a show within a show at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, where artwork by thousands of Orange County students is on display (see map, page 10). The creativity and level of expertise displayed by these young artists will delight and amaze you. Be sure to check out this wonderful exhibit.
COMPLIMENTARY BIKE VALET
Enjoy the festival while your bike is safely monitored. Located on Morse Boulevard across the street from the Amtrak Station parking lot, a free bike valet service is provided during festival hours by the Winter Park Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Board (see map, page 10).

Join us for The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens Sixth Annual Winter Park Paint Out, April 20‐26, 2014. This week‐long event has 25 of the best local and national artists recreating iconic area scenes in watercolors, oils and pastels. Free artists demos and paintings available for purchase throughout the event, which is capped by our fabulous Garden Party where you get to mingle with the artists.

JUDGES Each year The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival selects three judges from around the country who have artistic credentials in varying fields. In October 2013, these judges selected 225 artists, as well as three Emerging Artists, who will participate in the show from more than 1,100 artists who applied. The images they viewed for selection had numbers but no names, so the judges would not be swayed by recognition of the artist. These same judges attend the festival in March and view each artist’s entire body of work in order to select the winners of this year’s $72,500 in awards.
JERRY ALLEN GILMORE
Jerry Allen Gilmore earned a BFA in fiber and painting from Western Washington University and an MFA in painting and drawing from Washington State University. Over the past 30 years, Gilmore has enjoyed a unique and impressive career as both an artist and arts administrator, including a combined 14 years in director and curator roles at MARS Art-Space, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art and the University of ColoradoBoulder. He has also served as visual arts director at the Arvada Center for the Arts. Gilmore has exhibited in New York, San Francisco, New Zealand, Peru and Mexico. His work appears in collections at the Nordstrom Corporation, the Tucson Museum of Art, the Arizona State University Art Museum, the Denver Art Museum and in numerous private collections throughout the U.S. Gilmore’s intimate miniatures and sweeping large-scale drawings are deceptively personal, as he adopts a cast of animated characters and symbols to relate his own story. NOVIE TRUMP
Novie Trump is a Washington, D.C.based sculptor and installation artist working primarily in ceramic and mixed media. Formally trained in classical archaeology at the University of North Carolina, her work has been selected for juried and invitational exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe and has been featured in numerous publications. Winner of the Fairfax Strauss Fellowship, Trump has been awarded many grants and commissions for public art, most notably at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C. Formerly the executive director of Lee Arts Center in Arlington, Va., Trump currently curates exhibitions and juries for arts organizations throughout the country. She has served on the boards of several arts organizations and currently serves as chair of the Distinguished Artist Series of the James Renwick Alliance, a non-profit support organization for the Smithsonian Renwick Museum. Trump is founder and director of Flux Studios, a contemporary art space in Mt. Rainier, Md. Visit her website at novietrump.com.
EVAN WILSON
Evan Wilson is an artist specializing in the realist tradition of oil painting. He studied at North Carolina School of the Arts, the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Schuler School of Fine Art. In 1978 he received a grant from the Greenshields Foundation of Montreal to study Old Master drawing and painting in Florence, Italy. He also concentrated on developing his plein air technique, painting the vivid colors around the hill towns of Tuscany. Wilson is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2006 William Bouguereau Award for Emotion, Theme and the Figure, Art Renewal International Salon; and the Alabama Arts Award, University of Alabama. His paintings are in public and private collections, including the Huntsville Museum of Art in Alabama; the Greenville Museum in South Carolina, the Public Catalogue Foundation in the United Kingdom and the George Lucas Collection in California. In 2007, he co-curated Legacy, A Tradition Lives On, a traveling exhibition featuring the work of 12 artists and their mentor, Joseph Sheppard. He is represented by Quidley and Company in Boston and Nantucket.

BILL FARNSWORTH A 1980 graduate of the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Bill Farnsworth has spent more than 30 years as an Illustrator and fine artist. Born in Norwalk, Conn., he spent most of his life in New Milford, Conn., painting rural landscapes while earning a living as an illustrator. A Signature member of the Oil Painters of America, the American Society of Marine Artists and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society, Farnsworth’s works have appeared in many national shows and are held in private collections throughout the U.S. He has garnered awards of excellence at the Oil Painters of America’s national and regional shows and took first-place honors at the Fifth Biennial National Show in Punta Gorda. He won Best in Show at the 2010 Cashiers Paint Out and a bronze medal at the 2013 Oil Painters of America Summer Salon. His work is represented by the Hughes Gallery, Galerie Du Soliel, J.M. Stringer Gallery, the Edward Dare Gallery, the Mountain Mist Gallery and the Anderson Gallery. “If you travel to another country and don’t know the language, no one will understand you,” Farnsworth says. “This goes for art as well. A painting with bad values, shapes and edges will not convey to the viewer how the artist feels about the subject. My illustration work over the years has been the best training to put a picture together. Tight deadlines and being asked to paint everything under the sun was a great motivator to be resourceful.” Farnsworth lives in Venice, Fla., with his wife, Debbie. This is the 55th year that The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has showcased the artists and art programs from Orange County and Winter Park public and private schools. You’ll be delighted to see the unique works created by these talented local students. The student displays are located in eight tents across the railroad tracks near the stage in north Central Park, behind the Post Office. The exhibit is named in memory of Leon Theodore, an artist, teacher and member of The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival board. This year’s distinguished judges for the high school art are Jack King, University of Tampa professor of art, and Dr. Clem Pennington, Florida International University professor of art emeritus. Both are also practicing artists and jurors of major art shows and student portfolios. MORSE MUSEUM TIFFANY WORKS SHINE IN ALL SEASONS AT THE MORSE Admission is Free During Art Festival
The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art—located on the corner of North Park Avenue and Canton Avenue—is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). Highlights include the restored Byzantine-Romanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago as well as a wing that showcases surviving art and architectural objects from Laurelton Hall, Tiffany’s celebrated Long Island home. A new cell phone audio tour guides visitors through the Laurelton Hall exhibition, offering information about the restored Daffodil Terrace, objects from the artist’s collection, iconic Tiffany lamps and leaded-glass windows designed for international exhibitions. Admission to the museum is free during The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP VILLAGE HEY, KIDS! COME CREATE! HAVE FUN! IT’S FREE! Boys and girls ages 2 to 12: Here’s your chance to create a unique piece of artwork that you can take home and share with your family and friends. The Children’s Workshop Village attracts hundreds of kids and their families each year — and it’s free! Just stroll over to the west side of the railroad tracks near the post office. You’ll need to bring an adult with you to sign you in. The village is open every day of the festival, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. One of the most popular activities at the village is “easel painting,” which allows you to paint using the huge outdoor easels that have been a part of the festival for more than 30 years. Easel painting is offered only on Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers from the Oviedo High School Beta Club, Kappa Delta Pi-Omicron Lambda UCF, Seminole State College Volunteers and the Winter Park High School Art History Club will be on hand to help supervise the fun. In addition, museum partners have prepared exciting, hands-on arts and crafts activities for every day of the festival. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Committee believes children of all ages can develop a love and appreciation for art when they’re given an opportunity to explore their own creativity. Continue your creative involvement through the many varied activities offered at these art centers, galleries and museums all year long.

KRAFT AZALEA GARDEN “Pause Friend. Let Beauty Refresh the Spirit.” One of Winter Park’s most beautiful green spaces is Kraft Azalea Garden, 13 acres filled with towering trees, azaleas and landscaped paths located on Alabama Drive along the shoreline of Lake Maitland. This peaceful setting is a popular place for photography, picnics, weddings, relaxing and watching sunsets. The property is also a rookery for the great egret and the barred owl as well as many varieties of waterfowl. The most photographed area is the Exedra Monument, a curved structure with Greek columns and a bench at its base that overlooks the lake. It was donated in 1969 by Kenneth H. and Elizabeth P. Kraft in memory of the park’s namesakes, George and Maud Kraft. An inscription reads, “Pause friend. Let beauty refresh the spirit.” The property was designated as a public park in 1910, and was later named Alabama Park after William C. Temple’s estate,” Alabama,” located across the street. In 1921, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kronenberger bought the Temple property and built a resort called the Alabama Hotel. (In 1979, the hotel was converted into luxury condominiums). Leonard J. Hackney, a judge and member of the Florida State Supreme Court, had already started a movement to improve the Alabama Park when he became acquainted with George Kraft in 1928. They worked together to transform it into the lush, beautiful escape from the hustle-bustle that it is today. In 1931, Alabama Park was transformed into the Azalea Garden on Lake Maitland, sponsored by the Commercial Club with plans prepared by M. J. Daetwyler. Also known as the Honor Azalea Gardens, the park’s name changed again in 1937, to Kraft Memorial Azalea Gardens, in honor of the late George Kraft. Maud Kraft and her son set aside a sum of money for its care and maintenance. At the entrance to Kraft Azalea Garden is an inscription that reads: “A gift of George Kraft and Maud H. Kraft in token of their affection for Winter Park, its people and the beauties of nature.”

THE FOUNDATION The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation Inc. provides grants to promote community appreciation of the arts, and supports art education through scholarships and programs. Such programs include the Children’s Workshop Village, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, the Emerging Artist Program and Performing Arts at The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. It also funds the Jean Alice Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida. Casandra Hill, who is majoring in studio art, is this year’s recipient of the Jean Alice Oliphant Scholarship. In addition, the Festival’s first Image Review Workshop, slated for this spring, will receive funding from the Foundation. During 2013-14, the Foundation has been supported by generous donations from the Winter Parkbased Galloway Foundation, The Rotary Club of Winter Park and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. BEST OF SHOW COLLECTION The Best of Show Collection provides a visual history of The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, and showcases outstanding works of art and artistic trends through the years. Winners are made up of very diverse entries: a classic wooden rocking chair by Robert Kasnak from1991, a pen drawing by C. Glenn Eden from 1975 (so controversial that it was stolen to prevent its display) and a photograph that spans across five large panels by Bill Parish from 1978. It’s quite an honor to win the top prize at the festival, so imagine how prestigious it is to win more than once. The following artists have attained that distinction: Matthew Cornell, Ummarid “Tony” Eitharong, Pam Allman Fox, Charles Gatewood, Duncan McClellan, Jody dePew McLeane and Doug Prince. An annual tradition was started in 1969 when the Best of Show work of art was purchased by the Festival Board and presented to the City of Winter Park as an expression of appreciation for its support and the many services it provides. This year, the prize-winning piece will be purchased from the artist for $10,000. You can see the full display at the Winter Park Public Library by picking up a Best of Show brochure at the front desk and taking a self-guided tour. ENTERTAINMENT KIM WATERS With the release of his 1989 debut album, Sweet and Saxy, saxophonistband leader-composer-arranger-producer Kim Waters was instantly ranked among the nation’s premier Urban Jazz hitmakers. THE REDCOATS The RedCoats are a four-member British Invasion tribute band based in Central Florida. They perform songs from the British Invasion of the 1960s, including timeless hits from The Beatles. Also in their lively repertoire are tunes from other British Invasion groups such as The Kinks, The Zombies, The Dave Clark Five and The Who, among others. The RedCoats were formed in 1994, and still feature all four original members. They were the “official” band of Cool 100 FM Radio, and were two-time winners of the station’s statewide “Battle Of The Bands” contest, held at Universal Studios Florida. The RedCoats have toured both nationally and internationally, and have performed a variety of concerts in Canada and (literally) on Broadway in New York City.
THE ORLANDO CONCERT BAND WITH GUEST BIANA PINCHUK The Orlando Concert Band is a 65-member wind ensemble founded in 1989. Some of its recent gigs include the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church concert series, the City of Orlando’s “Fireworks at the Fountain” 4th of July celebration, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s commencement ceremonies and NASA’s 50th anniversary at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Biana Pinchuk is an 11 year old singer and violinist. A musical prodigy, she started singing at age 3 and playing the violin at age 5. She sings opera and Broadway songs and knows more the 200 pieces of music by memory. Biana has performed to raise money for Haitian relief and the Make a Wish Foundation, and has appeared with the Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra in Miami. EMERGING ARTISTS In 1977, The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival initiated the Emerging Artist Program. The goal of this program is to encourage the participation of new artists in the world of outdoor festivals, at no cost to the emerging artists. Along with the experience of submitting an application and surviving the jury process, the selected artists have the opportunity to realize the excitement, the sales and the customer feedback that comes with exhibiting in a highly regarded outdoor festival.

Miami native Trisha Bruno enjoyed a lengthy tenure in the fashion, advertising and entertainment industries, where she wore a variety of fashionable hats: contributing writer, media production and global management consultant as well as a long stint in front of the camera. She holds a B.A. in English from Rollins College, where she also studied art technique and design. Her foray into metal-smithing and jewelry design, however, didn’t begin until early 2009, when she decided to realign her life’s purpose. What resulted was a passion for crafting one-of-a-kind treasures handforged from precious metals and gemstones. “I’ve always been both a storyteller and an art collector,” says Bruno. “This is simply my way of sharing my journey with others who, quite literally, enjoy wearing their art on their sleeves.” Bruno lives and works overlooking a lush tropical garden in Biscayne Park with her husband, twin sons, two dogs, a cat and a lovely cast of wildlife visitors, ranging from giant iguanas to geckos, cranes to hummingbirds. Tim Deppen is a Florida native who loves the outdoors, especially anything having to do with water. In his youth, he watched his grandfather and mother build country-style pine furniture. That’s when he began to learn the trade. At the age of 18, when he was hired to build six outdoor rocking chairs, his passion for woodworking began. Now, when he’s asked where his talent came from, he replies, “I got it through osmosis.” Today, he’s married to a wonderful woman and has four amazing children. Being a firefighter affords him time in the woodshop to create paddles — the kind used to row boats, but are also works of art in and of themselves. Clearly, the passion Deppen has for woodworking and his love for the water and the outdoors are integral parts of his life. JENNIFER SAUER
Inspired by her rescued racing greyhound, Cody, and her lifelong love of horses, Jennifer Sauer began exploring animal portraiture from a distinctly modernist perspective following an award-winning career as a commercial artist and designer. Born in New Jersey in 1967, Sauer graduated from Syracuse University with a BFA in art history before moving to Los Angeles to work in the film and themed entertainment industries. In 2001 she relocated to Orlando, where she earned acclaim as a creative director for Universal Studios. There she contributed to projects including King Kong, Revenge of the Mummy and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. In 2011, following the birth of her daughter, Sauer refocused her talents on raising her child and nurturing a more personal artistic vision. She aspired to capture the powerful, playful and poetic grace of animals expressing their natural spirits and personalities.
