TO THE 2013 WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
n behalf of the WPSAF Board of Directors I welcome you to The 54th Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival! Our committed, all-volunteer board works year round to analyze and scrutinize all facets of this nationally recognized festival. Unlike most festivals, which have a paid staff, our active and provisional members present this event with the help of our dedicated sustainers and enthusiastic volunteers. Our focus is the 225 outstanding artists representing 33 states and three countries. They were selected from 1,100 applicants by independent, out-of-state judges. Three judges jury the applicants in the fall and return to judge and award prize money in March. A total of $72,500 will be awarded to 63 WPSAF artists. The funds for prizes have increased this year by $5,000 thanks to the recently announced Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation “Art of Philanthropy” purchase award. After the festival, the winning piece will be on permanent display at the foundation office in Winter Park. We also salute the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art for offering its $2,500 “Distinguished Work of Art” award in this, the museum’s 18th year of participation. With the help of, and gratitude to, the City of Winter Park, we are able to offer Central Park, the perfect setting for these extraordinary artists. Our thanks go to Mayor Ken Bradley and the City Commissioners, City Manager Randy Knight, Parks Director John Holland and the dedicated Parks and Recreation staff. We also appreciate the assistance of Police Chief Brett Railey, Lt. Randal Durkee and team as well as that of Fire Chief Jim White and his Fire and Safety staff. In 1996 we initiated our all-expenses-paid Emerging Artist Program to encourage young, serious artists and introduce them to the world of the outdoor art festival. They apply, are selected by our judges and encouraged to sell their work. However, they are ineligible for ribbons or prize money recognition. Do look for the three Emerging Artists near Morse Boulevard on the back sidewalk of South Park and consider a purchase

“before they become famous.” The WPSAF Patrons Program, which began in 2007 as a commitment by local art lovers to purchase art during the festival, is currently supported by almost 100 dedicated Patrons. The Patron money, combined with the awards money, totals more than $112,500. New for you this year is the Bike Valet Service, which is open during regular WPSAF hours. Ride your bike to their location west of the Amtrak station on Morse Boulevard and be assured of your bike’s safety while you enjoy the festival. Should you elect to purchase something unsuited for safe travel home on your bike, the artists will happily hold items for your return. This service is brought to you by the Winter Park Pedestrian & Bicycle Advisory Board. West of the railroad tracks you will find our Children’s Workshop Village, where youngsters participate in complimentary easel painting and art/craft projects offered by nine local museums. While in that area, be certain to include a visit to the extended Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, which is packed with art from Orange County students of all ages, from both public and private schools. Funding for the Children’s Workshop Village, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit and the Emerging Artists program is provided by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation. Finally we salute you, our loyal residents and firsttime attendees, for coming to support the arts. Remember, the recipe for a meaningful experience is to proceed slowly and stop to question the artists about their creative process or inspiration. Also, please consider a poster or T-shirt purchase, which supports our scholarship funds. Also, enjoy the music and, at the finish of the festival, make a date to visit the Winter Park Public Library, where you can see the Best of Show pieces provided by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s most prestigious outdoor art festivals, consistently rated among the top such shows in the country. It’s also one of the largest outdoor events held in Orange County, drawing approximately 350,000 visitors during the threeday show. This year, more than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for entry. An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists exhibiting their works. The National Endowment for the Arts, the White House, the U.S. Congress and many others have lauded the festival over the years for promoting art and art education in Central Florida. An all-volunteer board of directors produces the annual event, now celebrating its 54th year.

The festival features a wide variety of fine arts and crafts in the following categories: clay, digital art, drawing and graphics, fiber, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture and wood as well as our Emerging Artists.
AWARDS
Artists compete for 63 awards totaling $72,500. The Best of Show winner is purchased for $10,000 by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board and donated to the City of Winter Park. All previous Best of Show winners are on permanent display at the Winter Park Public Library. New in 2013, a $5,000 “Art of Philanthropy” Purchase Award is sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation. For more information on this award, see page 30. A $2,500 “Distinguished Work of Art” award is presented through The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art (see page 21). There are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.
MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT
All entertainment is free and presented on the main stage located in north Central Park. To see a list of performers and the show schedule, please refer to page 31.
MERCHANDISE
Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival posters and T-shirts are available at three merchandise sales tents. These tents are located at the north entrance (Park Avenue near the stage), the south entrance (Park and New England Avenues) and centrally at the intersection of Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue. This year’s poster, Stroll on the Avenue, is a painting by Tom Sadler. The painting is a panoramic sunset view of the Avenue featuring Winter Park’s iconic Colony Building. After the festival is over you can still purchase this year’s poster and past posters by visiting our website at wpsaf.org.
FAMILY FUN
Girls and boys can create their own artwork at the Children’s Workshop Village. Easel painting is very popular, and local art centers and museums feature a variety of fun, hands-on art activities for children. Admission is free, and participants may take home their artistic creations. The Children’s Workshop Village hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Easel painting is from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT
Aspiring young artists give festival attendees a show within a show at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, where artwork by thousands of Orange County students is on display (see map, page 10). The creativity and the level of expertise displayed by these young artists will delight and amaze you. Be sure to check out this wonderful exhibit.

JUDGES Each year the Art Festival selects three judges from around the country who have artistic credentials in varying fields. In October 2012, these judges selected 225 artists who will participate in the show from more than 1,100 artists who applied. The images they viewed for selection had numbers but no names, so the judges would not be swayed by recognition of the artist. These same judges attend the Festival in March and view each artist’s entire body of work in order to select the winners of this year’s $72,500 in awards.
CECILY CULLEN
Cecily Cullen is the creative director and curator at the Center for Visual Art, Metropolitan State University of Denver. Over the past 10 years, Cullen has worked with both emerging and established contemporary artists, curating or contributing to more than 60 exhibitions with the goal of inspiring and engaging the community. With an affinity for skillful craft and conceptual depth, Cullen has a passion for bringing together work that creates a visual dialogue. Selected exhibitions include, CURRENTS: Native American Forces in Contemporary Art; Altered Nature: Notable Interpretations from South America; and Taos Contemporary, which featured 56 artists living in Taos County, N.M. In addition, for the past four years Cullen has worked with the artist Christo as organizer of the traveling exhibition Christo and JeanneClaude: Prints and Objects. She has been a juror for numerous exhibitions, festivals, publications and public art projects and sits on the Cherry Creek Arts Festival Board of Directors. 16 54TH WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
BILL GRIFFITH
Bill Griffith is a ceramic artist and program director of Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn. He earned a B.S. degree in Art Education from Indiana State University and an M.A. in Ceramics/ Art Education from Miami (Ohio) University. He was a participant in the first International Workshop for Ceramic Artists in Tokoname, Japan. Influences from his extensive travel and exploration of ancient architecture and ruins in Asia, Central and South America are reflected in his sculptural forms. Griffith’s works have been exhibited worldwide and are included in collections at the Tennessee State Museum, the Arkansas Arts Center, the San Angelo Museum of Art, the Tokoname Cultural Museum and the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in China. The City of Orlando and the State of Florida’s Permanent Collection also feature Griffith sculptures. Griffith, who lectures and demonstrates as a visiting artist for conferences, universities and art guilds, has also served on jury panels for the Ohio Arts Council, the Kentucky Arts Council, the Arkansas Arts Council’s Individual Artists Fellowship Awards and the Windgate Fellowship Awards.
ED SHAY
Ed Shay was born in Boston and earned his B.F.A. from Murray State University in 1969 and his MFA from the University of Illinois in 1971. He taught at Ball State University, the New York School of Visual Arts, DePaul University and the University of Illinois at Chicago in the 1970s and 1980s. Since 1978 he has taught at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, including a stint at the SIUC campus in Niigata, Japan. Among his many grants and fellowships, the most significant are three Individual Artist Fellowships from the NEA and four grants from the IAC. Shay was represented by Nancy Lurie Gallery in Chicago from 1972 until 1978 and Roy Boyd Gallery from 1978 until 1998. In 1997 a major cast bronze sculpture, Acadian Gyro, owned by the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Mass., was included by curator Marcia Tucker in an exhibition at the White House of 12 works from American sculptors.

TOM SADLER Since moving to Orlando in 1983, Tom Sadler has dedicated himself to capturing the light, color and mood of the Central Florida landscape. The intense light, combined with the natural beauty of the area’s lakes, rivers and parks, provide a never-ending source of inspiration. After earning his B.F.A. at Auburn University, Sadler studied oil painting with instructor Jack Dempsey at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Later, he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Working from life, Sadler is preoccupied with capturing the color and atmosphere that the landscape suggests. He works in oils because of their inherent versatility and permanence. He utilizes consistencies of the paint from very transparent to very opaque. His glazing techniques imbue his work with an unmistakable sense of light. This depiction of light and its manifestations is the subject of most of Sadler’s works. “I’ve enjoyed living in Central Florida and painting scenes of Winter Park for many years,” says Sadler. “This particular painting, Stroll on the Avenue, captures the image of an early evening view of Park Avenue looking towards a familiar icon, the Colony Building. I wanted to depict the whole panorama of the Colony Building, the street and the people enjoying a nice walk down the opposite sidewalk with a colorful sunset in the background.”

LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT Be sure to visit the extraordinary exhibit of paintings, abstract self-portraits, photographs, sculptures, drawings and mixed media created by students in Orange County public and private schools. These pieces of colorful and creative artwork of all types, on display at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, are sure to delight parents and festival attendees alike. The artwork, created by students from elementary, middle and high schools, is selected by local art teachers and will be on display Friday through Sunday. This year’s distinguished judges, Bethany Gray, Bill Howland and Martha Lent, will award “Best of Show” ribbons to a middle- and a high-school student as well as other honors in a variety of categories. Just look for the big white tents located across the railroad tracks near the Post Office.

MORSE MUSEUM ADMISSION IS FREE DURING THE WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art—located on the corner of North Park Avenue and Canton Avenue—is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). Highlights include the restored Byzantine-Romanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and a new wing that showcases the museum’s collection of art and architectural objects from Tiffany’s celebrated Long Island home, Laurelton Hall. The new galleries support the first permanent exhibition of these objects. The recently restored Daffodil Terrace, prize-winning leaded-glass windows, iconic Tiffany lamps and custom furnishings are among the featured installations. Admission to the Museum is free during The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP VILLAGE EASEL PAINTING Boys and girls, here is your chance to show everyone your artistic abilities by creating a unique piece of artwork. Best of all, it’s free and kids can keep what they make. The fun happens between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Children’s Workshop Village on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Children’s Workshop Village is appropriate for children ages 2 through 12. One of the most popular activities at the Village is easel painting on Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, each of our museum partners has prepared interesting hands-on arts and crafts activities on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is one of the most anticipated events at the festival each year, and thousands of children and their families participate. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Committee believes children of all ages can develop a love and appreciation for art when they are given the opportunity to explore their own creativity. THE HANNIBAL SQUARE HERITAGE CENTER On the corner of New England and Pennsylvania Avenues, adjacent to the Winter Park Community Center, stands the two-story Hannibal Square Heritage Center. The center is a tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community. In keeping with its mission to promote the visual arts as a means of fostering diversity and preserving our cultural heritage, Crealdé School of Art deepened its long-standing relationship with the City of Winter Park by opening the Hannibal Square Heritage Center in 2007. Prior to that time, there was no specific repository honoring the legacy of Hannibal Square, which was founded 125 years ago as an African-American community. The center is home to the Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park, an award-winning documentary of more than 140 framed archival photographs of residents and former residents paired with oral histories. As a whole, the collection presents a moving representation of Winter Park’s African-American citizens from 1900 to present. The center also features a timeline juxtaposing local and national African-American history, community-created public art pieces in a variety of media, and changing exhibitions and programs that focus on local history, cultural preservation, African-American experience and Southern folklore. The center is a “must see” for visitors to Winter Park. It’s listed in numerous travel guides, including Visit Florida’s American Heritage Guide to Historic Sites in Florida, the AAA Tourbook and has been featured in The Impulsive Traveler in The Washington Post. Now on exhibition through April 13, 2013: Sewn Together: Photographic Quilts Reflecting the Historic Family Ties of Eatonville, Maitland and Winter Park. Upcoming events include an opening reception for Preaching to the Trees and the Animals: The Folk Art of O.L. Samuels, on Friday, April 19; and the 4th Annual Hannibal Square Heritage Center Folk Art and Craft Festival on Saturday, April 20.

THE FOUNDATION The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation provides grants to promote community appreciation of the arts and supports art education through scholarships and programs. The foundation supports the Children’s Workshop Village, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, the Emerging Artists Program and Performing Arts at The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. It also funds the Jean Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida. BEST OF SHOW COLLECTION The Best of Show Collection is as varied as the talented artists that participate in The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival each year. Artists have won for very diverse entries: a classic wooden rocking chair by Robert Kasnak in 1991; a pen drawing by C. Glenn Eden in 1975, so controversial that it was stolen to prevent its display; and a photograph that spans five large panels by Bill Parish in 1978. It’s quite an honor to win Best of Show at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, so imagine how prestigious it is to have won twice. The following artists have attained that distinction: Ummarid “Tony” Eitharong, Pam Allman Fox, Charles Gatewood, Duncan McClellan, Jody dePew McLeane and Doug Prince. You can see all of these works of art displayed at the Winter Park Public Library and take a self-guided walking tour by asking the front desk for a Best of Show brochure. You can also see them by going to the library’s website at wppl.org and looking in the Winter Park History tab/Online Collections /Events/ The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. You’ll find all of the Best of Show winners since 1969, which is the year that the tradition of giving the winning artwork to the City of Winter Park began. Currently, the Best of Show piece is purchased for $10,000. Occasionally the library will have a gallery walk that features one or more of the awardwinning artists explaining their creations. GRANT CELEBRATES THE FOUNDATION’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, one of Florida’s leading private grant-making foundations, will provide a $5,000 “Art of Philanthropy” award to a most deserving artist at The 54th Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. “We’re pleased to partner with The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival to recognize one of the many talented artists at the festival and support the arts community that our founder held in such high esteem,” says foundation President David Odahowski. Philanthropy is defined as the “love of mankind,” and the winning entry will represent philanthropy at its very best. The artistic expression of philanthropy can be made through any medium of the visual arts and need not contain a human form. The winner will be selected by The WPSAF panel of judges and a representative of the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation. The distinguished panel of judges includes Professor Ed Shay, Southern Illinois University/Carbondale; Bill Griffith, program director at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Cecily Cullen, director and curator at the Center for Visual Art, Metropolitan State/ University of Denver. The Art of Philanthropy is a purchase award and the winning entry will be on permanent display at the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation in Winter Park. The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation was created in 1973 and celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2013. Since its creation, it has been enriched by the Richard J. Conlee Fund and the H. Clifford Lee Fund. To date, the foundation has issued more than 3,165 grants to 790 organizations, primarily in Central Florida, totaling more than $100 million. Though it does not actively solicit outside donations, the foundation will work with philanthropists to achieve their charitable goals. Board officers are Gerald F. Hilbrich, chairman; Herbert W. ENTERTAINMENT STEVE COLE Steve Cole is one of the most celebrated players in contemporary jazz, having sold hundreds of thousands of albums worldwide and scored four No. 1 Smooth Jazz hits. He attended Northwestern University, where he studied modern classical music for the saxophone under the tutelage of internationally recognized educator Fred Hemke. While in college, Cole was a semi-finalist in the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts and one of three finalists in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. He recorded for the Atlantic, Warner Brothers and Narada Jazz labels before signing a multiple-album deal with Mack Avenue/ Artistry Music. The first project for the label, entitled Moonlight, is a collection of classic pop songs and standards with an orchestral backdrop. Cole has toured and/or recording with Boz Scaggs, Larry Carlton, Jeff Lorber Brian Culbertson, Freddie Cole, Cyrus Chestnut, KMFDM and Rick Braun, and is a founding member, along with Jeff Kashiwa and Kim Waters, of The Sax Pack.
BRIAN SIMPSON Celebrated keyboardist, composer and studio musician, Brian Simpson has been the go-to man for everyone from Janet Jackson and Teena Marie to George Duke, Stanley Clarke and Dave Koz, for whom he has had the distinction of being musical director for the past 15 years. The chart-topping musical chameleon who wrote the No. 1 R&B hit “The First Time” for Surface in the 1990s confesses, “Ultimately, my listeners inspire me to make my music.” South Beach, his inaugural album for Shanachie Entertainment, demonstrates that inspiration. The album’s title track, with a jubilant vibe reminiscent of the Ramsey Lewis smash hit “The In Crowd,” is already in the Top 20 and climbing on multiple jazz charts. “I’m very happy we chose ‘South Beach’ as the first single,” says Simpson. “It’s probably the song that’s most indicative of my style. My travels take me to some pretty nice places, but my favorites are always the ones with beaches. In the last year I’ve been to Hawaii, Bali, Indonesia, and several beaches in Florida. The wind, sea and sand really inspired the melodies you’ll hear.”

ENTERTAINMENT JEFF KASHIWA Seattle native Jeff Kashiwa knew he was destined to be a musician following his junior-high school introduction to woodwinds. His instincts were correct. He became known as one of the most compelling young saxophonists in contemporary jazz during his first year with The Rippingtons, performing hundreds of shows all over the world and appearing on many of the band’s classic recordings. Having established himself in the 1990s as one of the genre’s most diverse saxmen, Kashiwa left The Rippingtons after a decade-long run to launch a solo career. Subsequently, he has released nine CDs under his own name and has continued to record as a guest artist with many other perfornmers. In 2004, Kashiwa founded The Sax Pack, a trio of saxophone headliners, featuring himself, Steve Cole and Kim Waters. The group released two CDs together and charmed audiences all over the world with their Rat Pack style repartee. In 2006, Kashiwa reunited with The Rippingtons for their 20th Anniversary Tour, and continues to record and tour with the group as often as his busy schedule will allow. In addition to touring with The Sax Pack and his own group, Kashiwa has expanded his career to include music education, teaching various courses through the music program at Shoreline Community College in Seattle. His new CD, Let It Ride, features a host of great musicians from the world of contemporary jazz, including Russ Freeman, David Benoit, Chuck Loeb and Tom Schuman of Spyro Gyra. EMERGING ARTISTS In 1977, The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival initiated the Emerging Artist Program. The goal of this program is to encourage the participation of new artists in the world of outdoor festivals, at no cost to the emerging artists. Along with the experience of submitting an application and surviving the jury process, the selected artists have the opportunity to realize the excitement, the sales and customer feedback that comes with exhibiting in a highly regarded outdoor festival.
BEN RUPP
Ben Rupp experiments with design and uses handmade books and boxes as his canvas. Born in 1985 in Washington, D.C., Rupp attended the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, graduating with a BFA in Graphic Interactive Communication in 2008. He earned an MFA in Studio Art and The Computer at the University of Central Florida in 2011. Rupp, a resident of Winter Park, also draws inspiration from his residence at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. He loves typography and experimental imagery and strives to break the rules of traditional design. He continues to do freelance design work, including logos, newsletters, custom book designs and wine labels. Booth 187
MIRJAM FELDER Mirjam Felder was born in Switzerland and moved to a small village in Tuscany, where her passion for art reemerged, in 2002. The four elements—earth, water, air and fire—play a vital role in her paintings, which are mainly acrylic on canvas. Felder is inspired by nature and natural materials such as clay, wood and fiber. She paints using wood panels and palm bark as her canvas. As a child, Felder watched and learned from her father, Fredy Felder, a locally known painter. During her education to become a qualified gilder and picture-frame maker, she attended classes at the School of Arts and Crafts in Basle and Berne. In addition, she completed private courses at a pottery studio and a workshop for raku ceramics. As a professional gilder, she worked for several contemporary art galleries in and around Basle. EMERGING ARTISTS STACIA HOLLMANN Stacia Hollmann, who’s from Winter Park and now lives in Deland with her husband and five children, uses photography as an expression of herself. She views life as a series of images and a compilation of compositions, and she connects them with elements that have lost their newness: a faded letter from home, a frayed piece of fabric, a rusted piece of metal, an old postmark, a scribbled journal. All of these things inspire and push her. Hollmann travels the world in search of images that transcend time and context and uses alternative processes, particularly instant film transfers, in her creations. Booth 185
