President’s Letter
WELCOME TO RD THE 53 WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL It is an honor to welcome you to The 53rd Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. I have been attending this event since 1962. My brother’s Boy Scout troop camped in the park during the show, protecting the art at night and years later my son’s art was featured in the school exhibits. After I moved out of state, I would return in the spring to enjoy this wonderful event and the warmer weather. I was fortunate to move back to Winter Park and volunteer for this show and then join the board. I am amazed at the dedication of this small allvolunteer board. The board members spend thousands of hours working all year planning, organizing and improving this event. During the show, sustaining board members and many volunteers, who are vital to the success of this event, assist the board. Over the years the City of Winter Park has provided the use of our beautiful Central Park and all of the supporting services that are necessary to put on an art festival of this size. The City of Winter Park Police and Fire Departments, the City Manager’s Office and the Parks and Recreation Department dedicate countless hours to ensuring this festival is safe and successful. The work of 225 artists from around the world is presented to more than 300,000 art lovers in Winter Park during our annual three-day event. Each year, three experienced judges from out of state come to Winter Park in October to view more than 1,100 entries by artists who have applied. The same three judges return in March to judge the show and award $67,500 in prize money. The Best of Show is a purchase award of $10,000; this piece of art is donated to the City of Winter Park and displayed in the Winter Park Public Library. 2 53RD WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
Our Emerging Artist Program provides an opportunity for art students and new artists who have never exhibited in an outdoor show. These artists follow the same application process as the other artists and are juried in by the judges in October. This year, we have three very talented emerging artists exhibiting their work in the South Park. Please take time to visit their booths. The Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit proudly displays artwork by creative Orange County students in eight tents on the west side of the railroad tracks. Adjacent to the school exhibits are eight Children’s Workshops presented by local museums, which provide numerous “hands-on” art activities. The festival also provides easel painting for young budding artists on Saturday and Sunday. Our Patrons Program began in 2007 to provide dedicated funds pledged to purchase art during the festival. Last year more than $47,000 was paid to the artists by patrons. I want to thank our returning and new patrons for their generous support of this program. Thank you to the fine artists that have chosen to participate in the show this year. We hope it is successful for you. Welcome to the show. Enjoy the music, the food and the vibrant atmosphere. Festival at a Glance The 53rd Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival takes place in Central Park along Park Avenue in Winter Park, Florida, March 16, 17 and 18, 2012, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday and Saturday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday. Winter Park City Ordinance prohibits animals in the park and on the adjacent streets and sidewalks during the festival.

The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival posters and T-shirts are available at three merchandise sales tents. These tents are located at the north entrance (Park Avenue near the stage), the south entrance (Park and New England avenues) and centrally at the intersection of Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue. This year’s poster is a watercolor created by Robert C. Beck, inspired by the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour. After the festival is over you can still purchase this year’s poster and past posters by visiting our Web site at wpsaf.org.

Judges ABOUT THE JUDGES Each year the Art Festival selects three judges from around the country who have artistic credentials in varying fields. In October 2011, these judges selected 225 artists who will participate in the show from more than 1,100 artists who applied. The images they view for selection have numbers but no names, so the judges won’t be swayed by recognition of the artist. DAVID J. BROWN David J. Brown is a longtime museum professional residing in Winston Salem, N.C., who currently works as an independent curator and arts-management consultant. For two-and-a-half years, Brown served as the Deputy Director of Art at the new Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Va., a position he began in 2007. Prior to that, he completed a long tenure as Chief Curator and the HOME House Project Director at the (pre-state-owned) Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. He has curated, organized and toured more than 150 exhibitions and community-based projects.

SUSAN W. KNOWLES Susan W. Knowles is an independent curator, art historian, and writer. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Art History from Vanderbilt University and currently serves as vice president of the Board of Governors at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. She held curatorial positions at Creekwood Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission. Knowles was the Tennessee Editor for Art Papers magazine and is a contributing writer for Number and Sculpture magazines. She also produces short art features for Nashville Public Radio.
LEE HANSLEY Lee Hansley was born and educated in North Carolina, and is the proprietor of Lee Hansley Gallery in Raleigh, N.C. Hansley has been an Independent Curator of Contemporary Art since 1986, including exhibitions of Marvin Saltzman, Edith London and Silvia Heyden. He is a founder and board member of MoCA/NC (The Museum of Contemporary Art: North Carolina) scheduled to open in the future in downtown Raleigh. He has always been active in community activities and gives frequent seminars on gallery management, operations and ethics.

ROBERT C. BECK Robert C Beck is an American modern realist painter, printmaker, photographer and publisher of fine art media. Inspired by 19th and early 20th century American masters, Beck has developed a diverse knowledge of skills and media used in traditional works of art. His work is exhibited in museums, galleries and private collections around the country. He is a native of Florida and received his BA from Rollins College in his hometown of Winter Park, where he studied printmaking, drawing and photography.

After graduating, Beck worked for a short time as an independent graphic designer until moving to Old Lyme, Conn., where he studied figurative drawing and painting at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art. Beck has a keen interest in the lakes and waterways of Central Florida and this year’s poster was inspired while cruising the waters of Lake Osceola on the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour. His studio is in downtown Orlando.

Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit ENJOY A CELEBRATION OF YOUTHFUL CREATIVITY Thousands of pieces of colorful and creative artwork of all types delight parents and festival attendees alike at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit. In 2000, the exhibit was named in honor of longtime Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival board member Leon Theodore, who was also an art educator at Edgewater High School. Starting with the first festival in 1960, Theodore had a passion for advancing the Schools Exhibit as an important part of the show. Artwork created by middle and high school students in Orange County public and private schools is selected by local art teachers to be part of the display. This year’s distinguished judges will be Pam Coffman and Grady Kimsey. They will award a student Best of Show and bestow honors in a variety of art categories. Morse Museum TIFFANY WORKS SHINE AT THE MORSE MUSEUM Museum admission is free during the art festival.
The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art—located on the corner of North Park Avenue and Canton Avenue—is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). Highlights include the restored ByzantineRomanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and a new wing that showcases the museum’s collection of art and architectural objects from Tiffany’s celebrated
Long Island home, Laurelton Hall. The galleries support the first permanent exhibition of these objects. The recently restored Daffodil Terrace, prize-winning leaded-glass windows, iconic Tiffany lamps, and custom furnishings are among the featured installations. Admission to the museum is free during The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The museum is open 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m.4 p.m. Sunday. Children’s Workshop Village HEY KIDS, JOIN THE FUN AND GET CREATIVE! Boys and girls, here is your chance to show everyone your artistic abilities by creating a unique piece of artwork that you can keep and share with your family and friends. Best of all, it’s free. The fun happens between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Children’s Workshop Village on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and kids can keep what they make. The Children’s Workshop Village is appropriate for children ages 2 through 12. One of the most popular activities at the Village is easel painting on Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.3 p.m. In addition, each of our museum partners has prepared interesting hands-on arts and crafts activities on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This is one of the most anticipated events at the festival each year, and thousands of children and their families participate.

Our Outreach Program The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”) provides grants to promote community appreciation of the arts and to support arts education through scholarships and programs. The Foundation supports the Children’s Workshop Village, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit and the Emerging Artists Program at The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival each year. It also funds the Jean Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College in Winter Park and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The Foundation has received funding in 2011-2012 from donations by The Winter Park-based Galloway Foundation, the Rotary Club of Winter Park and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. Best of Show Collection
On display at the Winter Park Public Library The Best of Show Collection is as varied as the talented artists that participate in The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival each year. Artists have won for very diverse entries: a classic wooden rocking chair by Robert Kasnak in1991, a pen drawing by C. Glenn Eden in 1975, so controversial that it was stolen to prevent its display, and a photograph that spans across five large panels Gallery Walk with Artist Tony Eitharong by Bill Parish in 1978. It’s quite an honor to win the Best of Show at The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, so imagine how prestigious it is to have won twice. The following artists have attained that distinction: Ummarid “Tony” Eitharong, Pam Allman Fox, Charles Gatewood, Duncan McClellan, Jody dePew McLeane, and Doug Prince. You can see all of these works of art displayed at the Winter Park Public Library and take a self-guided walking tour by asking the front desk for a Best of Show brochure. You can also see them by going to the library’s website at www. wppl.org and looking in the Winter Park History tab/Online Collections /Events/ The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. You’ll find all of the Best of Show winners since 1969, that is when the tradition of giving the winning artwork to the City of Winter Park began and the city in turn gives it to the library for display. Currently, the Best of Show piece is purchased for $10,000. Occasionally the library will have a gallery walk that features one or several of the award-winning artists explaining their creations. Check with the library to see when the next gallery walk may be scheduled.

Tribute to John Gross IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN GROSS (1958-2011) The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s free concerts for the past 25 years, wanted his family, and good friend and producer of the shows, Sonny Abelardo, to do this one last show for WLOQ listeners. If John were here, he would tell you he had a great life, which he spent doing what he loved, for the family he loved. God bless you, John, and all your contributions to this community. John Gross was the heart and soul of WLOQ 103.1 FM, Central Florida’s home for smooth jazz, since 1977. John was present at the on-air studios of WLOQ in his wheelchair, when it went off the air at midnight July 31, 2011. He wanted to be the “last boot off the field.” He loved WLOQ, the staff, the audience and the various musicians he met along the way. This concert is dedicated to his memory and that of WLOQ 103.1. John lost his yearlong battle with ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) on Oct. 31, 2011. John, who was the creator and driving force behind
THINKING OF JOHN GROSS It was a privilege to work with John Gross during his many years of dedication to jazz at WLOQ. I will treasure those wonderful opportunities and remember him as a trusted and loyal friend. — Bob James America’s music was created by men and women who had a profound love of the art. By the 1920s we were full steam ahead creating the incredible music of the 20th Century. The contributors emerged from every aspect of the creation process. John Gross will always be known as one of the innovators of the sound of music. — Joe Sample I am among the many artists (not to mention the hundreds of thousands of music-loving fans) who benefited directly from the vision and passion of John Gross. Suddenly John was beside me, and said, “Isn’t it perfect?”, and it was. I liked me better when I was with him. Entertainment WARREN HILL Warren Hill began his musical journey at the age of 7, when his guitar teacher, in his first lesson, told him: “Tell me your favorite songs and I’ll teach you how to play them.” Hill, born and raised in Toronto, Canada, has been playing the music he loves ever since. His debut CD, Kiss Under the Moon, caught the attention of Natalie Cole, who brought him on as an opening act for her Unforgettable tour. Since then he has released 11 solo CDs, which have reached combined worldwide sales of more than 1 million copies. In the field of Contemporary Jazz he has been heard on recordings with Chieli Minucci, Keiko Matsui, Jeff Golub, Steve Oliver, Special EFX and John Tesh, many of which became No.1 songs. One of
Hill’s CDs—entitled Shelter From the Storm—reached Top 20 on the Billboard charts in 1998. Hill is also responsible for the world’s first Smooth Jazz Cruise, which he launched in January 2004. It was an instant success. So much so that it spawned additional cruises mimicking Hill’s design. He has earned accolades including six Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards, Berklee Distinguished Alumni, multiple SESAC Songwriter Awards, a Juno Nomination, multiple No.1 songs, and spotlights in Radio & Records, USA Today and Billboard. Currently Warren is touring with the Gentlemen of the Night, featuring Marion Meadows and Paul Taylor. But the true loves of Hill’s life will always be his wife of 17 years, Tamara, and their 12-year-old daughter, Olivia. Countless hits have been dedicated to them.
JAZZ PROFESSORS
The Jazz Professors group is led by tenor saxophonist Jeff Rupert and includes Per Danielsson on piano, bassist Richard Drexler, Marty Morell on drums, and
guitarist Bobby Koelble. A new addition to the Jazz Professors group this year is trombonist Michael Wilkinson. Collectively these musicians are on hundreds of recordings, and have long associations with Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Kenny Drew, Jr., Karin Allyson, Sam Rivers, Mel Tormé, Kevin Mahogany, and Maynard Ferguson. The Jazz Professors debut recording on Flying Horse Records was in the Top 20 on Jazz Week for 17 weeks in 2011.
SUNNIE PAXSON Innovative songwriter, producer, arranger and performer Sunnie Paxson has proven herself as a talented jazz pianist and recording artist. Paxson has toured with Grammy award winning bassist Stanley Clarke and has shared the stage and recorded with Justo Almario, Larry Carlton, Danny Gottlieb and Michael Paulo, to name a few. Her compositions and performances have been used on the sound tracks of feature films and television shows such as Desperate Housewives. A native of Philadelphia, Sunnie was a child piano prodigy from a musical family. Her skills were honed by studies with world-renowned pianists Bernard Peiffer, Jimmy Amadie and Ray Santisi. Music and the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. Paxson was voted one of Los Angeles’ best jazz performers by Los Angeles Magazine. In the world of radio, she is known on stations throughout the U.S. as well as internationally. Her debut solo album, Groove Suite, featured the ultimate feel-good single, “Do It (‘Til You’re Satisfied),” with longtime friend Clarke on bass. Jazz Week listed Sunnie as as one of its Top 100 artists with the most spins for two years during the peak run of this CD. Sunnie’s newest album, Bohemian Sun, is to be released on the Roxboro Entertainment Group label. She returns to her solid jazz roots with this straightahead jazz trio record, which consists of herself, Stanley Clarke/bass and Ronald Brunner Jr. /drums, featuring some of her own compositions, some standards and one song written by Clarke.

The Orlando Concert Band is a 65-member ensemble of wind and percussion instruments. Members include professional musicians, music educators and other talented performers who have significant musical experience. Band membership is achieved through an audition process. Founded in 1989, the Orlando Concert Band performs throughout Central Florida for

Emerging Artists In 1977, The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival initiated the Emerging Artist Program. The goal of this program is to encourage the participation of new artists in the world of outdoor festivals, at no cost to the emerging artists. Along with the experience of submitting an application and surviving the jury process, the selected artists have the opportunity to realize the excitement, the sales and customer feedback that comes with exhibiting in a highly regarded outdoor festival. MICHAEL DAVIS Mike Davis was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He still lives in Cleveland, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Cleveland Institute of Art for Glass. In the past Davis has worked for a non-profit fine art glass studio and has taught flat fusing classes for the College of Mount St. Joseph. Davis is also a guild member at the Kennedy Heights Arts Center in Cincinnati, where he shows regularly. IRIS LEDESMA Iris Ledesma holds a Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Florida and a Master of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. Having an architecture background, Ledesma was immediately drawn to different sources of inspiration and art. She works at various scales: from an object that occupies the body, to an object the body occupies. In the end, each has a structure, form and its own experience. She considers her jewelry to be little pieces of architecture. They are meant to be experienced when worn and also meant to be interesting objects while laying on horizontal surfaces. Emerging Artists ROBERT COBY Robert Coby is a glass artist who received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2011. While a student, he spent a summer as the Windgate Fellowship Intern working with the glass collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Patrons Program Our Patrons Program was created to provide support for The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival artists through dedicated funds pledged to purchase artwork during our annual show. By participating, Patrons make monetary pledges for given levels of spending. Eighty percent of your contribution stays with you to purchase art and twenty percent goes to support The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. This financial commitment to the purchase of art generates enthusiasm among the artists and attracts the most outstanding artists to our festival.
