President’s Letter
WELCOME TO ND THE 52 WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL Growing up in Winter Park I always looked forward to The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. Whether I was going with my family or riding my bike, it has always been my favorite event of the year. I still feel that way to this day. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival showcases 225 artists from all over the country and occasionally from other countries as well. The beauty of the City of Winter Park and the temperate weather combine to make our show one-of-a-kind. Our three professional judges award $67,500 in prize money in Awards of Excellence, Distinction and Merit, including our Best of Show $10,000 purchase award and the $2,500 Morse Museum Award for Distinguished Work of Art. More importantly, our artists compete for the honor of adding one of their pieces to your collection. Our board of directors is an all-volunteer staff and works hard year round to bring you a great show. We also have many community volunteers who enjoy a variety of jobs throughout the festival. The City of Winter Park Police and Fire Departments and the Parks and Recreation Department dedicate many hours to insure a successful event. We wouldn’t be able to put on the show without them. The festival not only showcases the work of established artists, it also seeks to add to the 2 52nd WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
development of new artists. The Emerging Artists Program provides an opportunity for new artists who have never exhibited in an outdoor show. Our Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit proudly displays artwork by talented Orange County students. This year eight local museums provide hands-on activities for children in the Children’s Workshop area. Easel painting is also available for young budding artists. There will be ongoing live music throughout the weekend with a top-name jazz artist for the popular Friday night concert. Food vendors offer a delicious array of food throughout the park all weekend. Our Patrons’ Program is committed to supporting the artists through dedicated funds pledged to purchase their artwork at the Festival. Please contact us if you are interested in this beneficial and enjoyable program. Our goal is to bring pleasure to those who have grown to love this event while opening the eyes of those who’ve just come for the first time. We hope all will come back for years to come. Festival at a Glance The 52nd Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival takes place in Central Park along Park Avenue in Winter Park, Florida, March 18, 19 and 20, 2011 9 am-6 pm, Friday and Saturday; 9 am-5 pm, Sunday.
Winter Park City Ordinance prohibits animals in the park and on the adjacent streets and sidewalks during the festival.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT
The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s most prestigious outdoor art festivals, consistently rated among the top shows in the country. The festival is also one of the largest outdoor events held in Orange County drawing approximately 250,000 visitors during the three-day show. This year, more than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for entry. An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists exhibiting their works in the festival. The National Endowment for the Arts, The White House, Congress and many others have lauded the festival over the years for promoting art and art education in Central Florida. An all-volunteer board of directors produces the annual festival, now celebrating its 52nd year.
All entertainment is free and presented on the Florida Family Insurance Stage located in north Central Park. To see a list of performers and the show schedule, please refer to page 30.
ART CATEGORIES The festival features a wide variety of fine arts and crafts in the following categories: Clay, Digital Art, Drawing and Graphics, Fiber, Glass, Jewelry, Leather, Metal, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Watercolor and Wood.
AWARDS Artists compete for 62 awards totaling $67,500. Best of Show is purchased for $10,000 by The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board and donated to the City of Winter Park. All previous Best of Show winners are on permanent display at the Winter Park Public Library. A $2,500 Award for a Distinguished Work of Art is presented through the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. There are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.
MERCHANDISE The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival posters and T-shirts are available at three merchandise sales tents. These tents are located at the north entrance (Park Avenue near the stage), the south entrance (Park and New England Avenues) and centrally at the intersection of Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue. This year’s poster is a beautiful watercolor of a Park Avenue street scene created by Winter Park artist, Edie Fagan. After the festival is over, you can still purchase this year’s poster and past posters by visiting our Web site at www.wpsaf.org.
FAMILY FUN Girls and boys can create their own artwork at the Children’s Workshop Village. Easel painting is very popular, and local art centers and museums feature a variety of fun, hands-on art activities for children. Admission is free, and participants may take home their artistic creations. The Children’s Workshop Village hours are 10 am-4 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Easel painting is from 10 am–3 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT Aspiring young artists give festival attendees a show within a show at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, where artwork by thousands of Orange County students is on display. (See location on map.) The creativity and the level of expertise displayed by these young artists will delight and amaze you. Be sure to take a look at this wonderful exhibit.

Judges ABOUT THE JUDGES Each year the art festival selects three judges from around the country who have artistic credentials in varying fields. In October 2010, these judges selected 225 artists that will participate in the show from more than 1,100 artists who applied. The images they view for selection have numbers but no names so the judges won’t be swayed by recognition of the artist. These same judges attend the festival in March and view each artist’s entire body of work in order to select the winners of this year’s $67,500 in awards.
GENE KOSS Gene Koss started the glass program at Tulane University and brought the movement of glass art to New Orleans. Combining cast glass with metal, wood and other materials to create monumental works, he has raised glass sculpture to the realm of public art. Koss’s work has had a profound impact on American artists working in both steel and glass media. His work is included in numerous private collections and has been displayed in museums and galleries throughout the United States and abroad.

STEVEN MATIJCIO
Inez S. Wolins currently heads the Division of Interpretation & Education at Boston National Historical Park at Charleston Navy Yard. Previously she has been a development consultant at Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena and Vice President at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art, also in southern California. An experienced arts administrator, she has been affiliated with the Autry National Center of the American West, C.M. Russell Museum, Harn Museum of Art, Wichita Art Museum, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She regularly conducts workshops and serves as a program consultant at notable museums across the country.
Steven Matijcio is the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He has also held positions at the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario, and the National Gallery of Canada. He has written for journals including Canadian Art and Canadian Architect, and conducted interviews with Jane Alexander, Shaun Gladwell, Nasrin Tabatabai and Babak Afrassiabi. Matijcio served as a professor in contemporary art practice, theory and criticism at the University of Manitoba from 2007-08, and continues to remain active as a writer, researcher, and lecturer.

Poster Artist
EDIE FAGAN Winter Park native, Edie Showalter Fagan’s watercolors are painted in a loose, spontaneous manner. She enjoys painting landscapes, still life and figures, and is well known for her dog portraits. She holds a degree in Art from Queens University in Charlotte and has studied watercolor with nationally and internationally known artists. The National Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society have honored her with signature memberships, and she was a studio artist at Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Florida.

She was published in Splash 9 - a collection of watercolors by top contemporary American artists. Before being selected as the artist for The 2011 Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival poster, she was the poster artist for Winter Park’s 2005 Doggie Art Festival and the 2006 Winter Park Autumn Art Festival. In 2008 she painted an ornament representing Florida for the White House Christmas tree. Her awardwinning paintings have appeared in newspapers and magazines, and are treasured in clients’ homes nationwide.
“My goal is to interest the viewer in lingering awhile to enjoy the choices I’ve made in value, color, hard and soft edges, negative and positive shapes and the play of light. Sometimes it’s more about what I’ve omitted than included. Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit SEE FUTURE PICASSOS, VAN GOGHS & O’KEEFES ON DISPLAY Thousands of pieces of colorful and creative artwork of all types delight parents and festival attendees alike at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit. In 2000, the exhibit was named in honor of long-time Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival board member, Leon Theodore who was also an art educator at Edgewater High School. He was involved with advancing the schools exhibit since the first festival in 1960. Artwork created by middle and high school students in Orange County public and private schools is selected by local art teachers to be part of the display. This year’s judges, Pam Miles and Michele Tuegel, will award a Best of Show and bestow honors in a variety of art categories.

Morse Museum TIFFANY WORKS SHINE AT THE MORSE MUSEUM Museum offering free admission during art festival
This leaded-glass transom is one of several such panels from the dining room of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. The panel is now on view at the Morse.
The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art—located on the corner of North Park Avenue and Canton Avenue—is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). Highlights include the restored Byzantine-Romanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and a new wing that showcases the Museum’s collection of art and architectural objects from Tiffany’s celebrated Long Island home, Laurelton Hall. The
galleries support the first permanent exhibition of these objects. The recently restored Daffodil Terrace, prize-winning leaded-glass windows, iconic Tiffany lamps, and custom furnishings are among the featured installations. Admission to the Museum is free during The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Children’s Workshop Village HEY KIDS, SHOW US YOUR CREATIVITY, IT’S FREE! Boys and girls, here is your chance to show everyone your artistic abilities by creating a unique piece of artwork that you can keep and share with your family and friends. Best of all, it’s all free. The fun happens between 10 am and 4 pm at the Children’s Workshop Village on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and kids can keep what they make. The Children’s Workshop Village is appropriate for children ages 2 through 12. One of the most popular activities at the Village is easel painting on Saturday and Sunday, 10 am 3 pm. In addition, each of our museum partners has prepared interesting hands-on arts and crafts activities on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm. This is one of the most anticipated events at the festival each year and thousands of children and their families participate.

Historic Casa Feliz members rallied around the house Casa Feliz, or “Happy House” in in the year 2000, when the property Spanish, is the signature residential faced the threat of demolition. The Foundation
Our Outreach Program The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”) provides grants to promote community appreciation of the arts and to support arts education through scholarships and programs. The Foundation supports The Children’s Workshop Village, The Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit and the Emerging Artists Program at The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival each year. It also funds the Jean Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College in Winter Park and The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The Foundation received funding in 2010-2011 from donations by the Winter Parkbased Galloway Foundation, Land O’ Lakes, Inc., David and Jennifer Foley, and from The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The Foundation, a Florida corporation not-for-profit, was approved as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt entity in September of 2008 by the Internal Revenue Service. Walking Tour Part of Library’s Celebration What does it take to win the best of show award at a festival which features 225 of the top artists in their fields? It is a little easier to understand the answer when you meet the artists who have won in person and hear from them the behind the scenes stories. You find out what goes into the technical process of making their artwork and what individual passions are mixed in to make their creations unique. That is what the audience experienced at the Winter Park Public Library’s second Best of Show Walking Tour on December 2, 2010. The program featured two of Florida’s most noted creative forces, glass artist, Duncan McClellan and jewelry artist, Pam Allman Fox. Both artists are two-time winners of The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Best of Show Award. This educational program was part of the Winter Park Public Library’s 125th anniversary celebration. Entertainment BRIAN SIMPSON
A longtime studio musician, musical director and touring keyboardist to stars as diverse as Janet Jackson and Dave Koz, Brian Simpson’s breakthrough as a solo artist with his Rendezvous Entertainment album It’s All Good was the jazz genre’s major story of 2006. Focusing once again on compelling acoustic piano melodies, bright jazz improvisations and spirited funk grooves, Simpson keeps the extraordinary momentum hopping-and, true to the moniker he chose for the new album, soaring--with Above The Clouds. The title track of It’s All Good proved instantly and joyfully prophetic, as it hit No. 1 on the Radio & Records Smooth Jazz Airplay chart and remained in the Top 5 for four months; his follow-up single “Saturday Cool” went Top 15. A jazzman from an early age, he grew up in Gurnee, Illinois, a small town north of Chicago, picking up piano
at the age of 10. Simpson went on to study at Northern Illinois University, where he majored in piano and starred in the school’s big band, an ensemble that won numerous Downbeat awards and toured all over the world. Upon graduating with a BA in music, Simpson moved to Los Angeles, quickly immersing himself in the local jazz scene. He soon found himself jamming after-hours with the likes of future stars Everette Harp, Boney James and Norman Brown. He then took a temporary leave of absence from the jazz scene, touring the world with pop divas Teena Marie, Sheena Easton and Janet Jackson. His foray into the pop world didn’t end there; in January 1991 he co-wrote the No. 1 Pop hit “The First Time.” Recorded by Surface, the song conquered both the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts.
RICK BRAUN Nobody on today’s contemporary urban jazz scene knows more about the power of perfect, timely partnerships— or what it takes to keep the No. 1 hits coming—than Rick Braun. That’s why the trumpeter, composer and producer’s stylistically eclectic, envelope-pushing debut CD on Artistry Music, All It Takes, is finding a groove with his friends and fellow greats. After launching the millennium in Shake It Up mode with Boney James and later hooking up with Kirk Whalum and Norman Brown as BWB, Braun reached even greater heights in 2007 when he and saxman Richard Elliot—who were partners at the time in the independent label ARTizen Music Group—teamed up for RnR. Their duet project hit No. 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart immediately upon its release 32 52nd WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
and its catchy title track single was an instant smash, staying at No. 1 on Radio and Records’ Contemporary Jazz airplay chart for over two months. The success of RnR capped an amazing run throughout the 2000s by Braun, who set a record at the 2002 National Contemporary Jazz Awards in San Diego by winning a total of five trophies, including Best Male Artist, Best Album (Kisses in the Rain, which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart), Song of the Year (the title cut) and Best Brass Player. He also shared a Best Collaboration award with James for their 2000 hit “Shake It Up,” which reigned at No. 1 on the Billboard chart for 11 weeks. Braun next huddled up with Kirk Whalum and Norman Brown for BWB, which featured the No. 1 hit title track “Groovin’.”
Entertainment CHIELI MINUCCI AND SPECIAL EFX
Guitarist, composer and arranger Chieli Minucci is the leader of the Grammy-nominated jazz-fusion group Special EFX, which he co-founded with the late George Jinda in 1984. A major force on the jazz and world music scene for 25 years, Special EFX’s newest release, Without You, is a diverse collection of jazz-fusion world rhythms and the effortlessly flowing guitar artistry that Chieli (key-eh-lee) is known for. This brilliant double CD features the original Special EFX lineup of favorites – drummer Lionel Cordew, bassist Jerry Brooks, keyboardist Jay Rowe and vocalist/ percussionist Philip Hamilton – plus many brilliant guest artists, including keyboardists Jeff Lorber and Lao
Tazer, violinists Karen Briggs and Alan Grubner, vocalist Will Brock and bassist Dave Anderson. Special EFX is one of the most prominent world fusion groups of the era. Emerging Artists In 1977, The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival initiated the Emerging Artist Program. The goal of this program is to encourage the participation of new artists in the world of outdoor festivals, at no cost to the emerging artists. Along with the experience of submitting an application and surviving the jury
NICOLAS BAIN Nicholas Bain is a studio artist living and working in Asheville, NC. A recent graduate of the Professional Crafts program at Haywood Community College, Nicholas was introduced to jewelry making at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee. His work is strongly influenced by process and technical problem solving, with a focus on texture and form. He works primarily in silver, using gold and stones to accent and embellish his designs. Nicolas also enjoys experimenting with non-traditional materials.
ANDREW VEGA Andrew Vega is a freelance Photographer whose interest in visual arts led him to pursue a degree in Film at F.M.U. One of the compelling forces in his photography is to show his two children and others that there is something more than we can see when we explore for new perspectives, and to capture the emotion in the world around us. Andrew captures these images using high dynamic range and panoramic digital photography, creating emotionally charged, surreal city and landscapes.

Emerging Artists TIM YANKOSKY Tim Yankosky is a mixed media artist who discovered his passion in his mid-forties and pursued a degree in fine arts from San Francisco State. Tim is drawn to the functional wear and patina of vintage objects. He repurposes these objects to create contemporary works of art that often reflect hidden personal narratives derived from a tempestuous childhood.
