LAYERED ILLUMINATION Layered Illumination is a project using paper as the thematic material. Using different kinds of paper products and each of their unique physical qualities, a party light fixture was created. Paper mache was the main method of construction. In the design of the lamp shade, different layers of illumination were used. The areas where the paper pieces overlap are darker, while areas with a single layer of paper or a void provide brighter. The resulting visual effect is dynamic and can provide the great impact in the right environment.

Above material are a globe light bulb, a light socket, black pastel paper, corrugated cardboard, and white construction paper.

The globe shape of the light bulb informed the overall form of the fixture.

All the circles and curvilinear lines emanate from the light source and form the light shade, the neck, down to the base of the fixture 36

Scaled and measured revision of the drawing.

One requirement to be met was for the light bulb to be suspended 12� from the table surface.

IRON IN WINTER The Iron Bark was created as an exploration of natural textures and forms on man-made objects.

Iron pours are conducted in order to produce industrial tools and instruments. This project was an opportunity to move away from the more practical uses of metallurgy and to create sculptures. The juxtaposition of the tree bark texture on iron was the contrast to be achieved in this work. The result was a piece the embodied the both the nature and science.

The casting method used was investment casting. The process involved making the wax positives of the figure, installing gates and sprues for the pour, and then coating the overall form in alternating layers of ceramic shell slurry and stucco.

Discarded radiators were collected from a local metal scrapyard and broken up to be used for the pour.

FLOATING GARDEN

with David Kim and Michelle Munive According to biologist E.O. Wilson, “biophilia” is the afinity of human beings for the natural world.

“Biophilic design”, as a result, is the design of spaces, buildings, and cities using the qualities of nature. In this intervention, a bannister, which was a fragment from a previous renovation and no longe had a use, is re-purposed as a structure for an indoor floating garden. With limited time and materials, we brainstormed ideas of how the bannister can repurposed.

(above) Twine was tensioned to create the framework for the garden’s suspended bed. Plastic sheeting prevents water from leaking through.

(next page) Canvas, soil, gravel, and rope were used to create a custom micro-landscape. To add height to the installation, the rope was hung over the wall.
