GAME OF THE WEEK NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. 2 NINTENDO 3DS $68 // G // DEvElOPER: NINTENDO

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a traditional side-scrolling game. It’s a direct sequel to the original 2006 DS title and the Wii version also. As with previous versions, the game looks great and is overall solid, with lively visuals and great character animation. For more serious gamers, they will be pleased to know that the Mario game now includes tighter, more responsive controls compared to before where the characters were never able to stop directly on a dime. Collecting coins has always played a vital part in the series, yet it’s now all about grabbing them. There’s also the added bonus of a special surprise for each player who is able to collect one million in total. The games “SpotPass” functionality lets the gamer compare Coin Rush times and Coin Counts, which adds a more personal alternative to leader boards. Even with all its new features, the main problem with the game is hard to pin down. While the graphics are good, they lack individuality; the music is good, but doesn’t set it apart from the series. It’s still a great game, but can feel extremely monotone at times. The levels and challenges are also too easy. Previous additions have always provided a solid plat-forming challenge, yet it seems to now be toned down. Whilst the game doesn’t overly hand out “1ups”, you’ll be able to collect that many coins that can be used for extra lives that it doesn’t really matter. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is good, but like the saying goes: you can never go home again. It’s a great-looking game with excellent plat-forming and some great new additions. Most gamers will find themselves plugging away at the Coin Rush feature, because it’s something of a competition complex, but something still feels off or lacking in the game. It’s welcoming to newcomers, but hardcore fans should be prepared, things aren’t like they used to be. BM
