Message from FWPA AN AWARDING EXPERIENCE FOR ALL Congratulations to everyone involved in creating and submitting the record number of entries in the 16th year of the Australian Timber Design Awards. Of course, major kudos goes to the immensely talented people and teams who conceive and execute these outstanding projects, however let us not forget the myriad of other people involved. From families and support staff in design, engineering, suppliers and onsite construction offices to those who assemble the entries, the judges who spend many hours pondering and arguing their merits and the event staff who bring the night together. So while we celebrate sixteen years of Australian Timber Design Awards, let us recognise the tens of thousands of people who have each contributed to their success. Success in awards is both a recognition of and a contribution to success in the marketplace. As we celebrate the growing use of wood and wood products in our built environment, I thought it would be useful to look at some of the factors behind this development, and in the growing tradition of the internet, to present them as a numbered list. Ten reasons why your clients should be using more wood in their next projects Through various channels, including informal chats at industry events, feed back from seminars and tutorials and structured market research, we’ve talked to a wide range of architects, engineers, building designers and others involved in the specification of building materials. We’ve discovered that many would like to use more wood and wood products, but they are constrained from doing so by a variety of reasons. Objections, or arguments against the use of wood can come from anywhere along the material specification chain, from design partners to engineers, suppliers to builders and clients. While we recognise that every job is different, for the sake of simplicity we’ve summarised ten major arguments for using wood in the points below. They are in no particular order of importance, a factor that is vital on one project may be of marginal influence in another. 1. Renewability – wood is our only practical, large-scale renewable building material. It sounds simple and it is; the more trees we plant the more wood we grow. 2. Sustainability – while global governments are discussing REDUCING the use of some materials to lower carbon emissions, INCREASING the use of wood can also lower carbon emissions. This is because approximately half the dry weight of wood is carbon, removed from the atmosphere and stored for life by a growing tree. 3. Cost – wood has long been considered a more expensive option to traditional alternatives for mid-rise residential and commercial buildings. Recent research has shown this is not the case, with around 15% - 20% savings achievable.

4. Aesthetics – people love the timeless look and feel of wood (79% ‘love’ or ‘like’ wood – consumer research - 2015) 5. Record breaking – at ten storeys, Lend Lease’s Forte Living Apartments in Melbourne’s Docklands were the world’s tallest. Today, people are talking of and commencing 20-30-40 storey wood-composite towers in Europe. 6. Design innovations – from cross laminated timber (CLT) to glue laminated timber (Glulam), laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and more, new engineered timber products are offering exciting new design and engineering options. 7. Technical resources and support – WoodSolutions Technical Design Guides (including CAD files) and Ask an Expert services are available to help you resolve material or design issues. 8. Client preferences – if you work with Local Government, you’ll be interested to know that the national body endorsed a ‘Wood Encouragement’ policy, first developed by the Latrobe City Council, that prefers the use of wood, where applicable, for new constructions, renovations and fit outs. 9. Advanced design and fabrication – wood and wood products are wellsuited to BIM, pre-fabrication, CNC machining, parametric programming and other emerging design and construction technologies. 10. Extensive documentation – this list is necessarily brief. New problems exist to be solved, new opportunities arise to be seized and new records emerge to be broken. How successful we are as an industry – from producers and suppliers to designers and builders – and how we can make the most of these opportunities, depends to a large extent, on how efficiently we can cooperate and collaborate – while of course competing furiously to be recognised as the best in our field!

JUDGING JUDGING PROCESS Entries are judged on outstanding timber use, appearance, workmanship, structure and innovation. Judges are looking, in particular, for context-suitable use of timber. Well-considered design and construction with timber will distinguish an entry. With such a broad range of categories on offer, there is scope for recognition of a variety of applications. Each entry category is judged independently. This is an important feature of the Australian Timber Design Awards: a winning project may excel in a range of distinct areas. It is important for entries to be comprehensive but concise – judges will refer to written statements, drawings, and detailed photographs, where appropriate, in order to distinguish a winner. As such, entrants must consider whether their project is suitable for the categories into which it is entered. Entries should display examples of outstanding design in the relevant areas and include a description of the use of timber in each project.
SELECTION OF JUDGES Each year the judging panel comprises an architect, an engineer, an academic and a builder. The judging is presided over by a timber industry member. This broad representation across professions ensures that winners are chosen that excel in all aspects of the design. This also ensures that winners use timber appropriately, expertly and in a way, which enhances the timber industry, and timber design in general.

About the
JUDGES JOHN BAHORIC John is a consulting structural engineer with a wide range of experience in the design and implementation of engineered timber in our built environment. He has designed numerous buildings in all sectors ranging from the rectilinear to highly complex curvilinear, and his approach combines industry knowledge with sound design and digital design skills, and a passion for collaborative design. John was member of the steering committee for the formulation of La Trobe Valley City Council’s “timber preferential” policy and is currently engaged in research work with industry and academia on the use of prefabricated modular timber construction.
KATE ST JAMES Kate St James, FDIA is an interior designer and editor-in-chief of Grand Designs Australia, Home Design, Renovate and several additional leading Australian home design titles at Universal Magazines. Kate’s design career has spanned three decades both in interior design and journalism, both here and abroad. She has held roles as a president of the Australian Architects Association, board member of the NSW Architects Registration Board and is a fellow of the Design Institute of Australia, Kate actively supports and promotes the design industry and encourages students and emerging designers.
KEVIN MASCI Graduated from the University of Melbourne with Honours in 1981, Kevin has been an Associate Director and a Senior Project Architect at Bates Smart for eight years. With over 30 years experience he is an accomplished Project Leader who strives for producing quality architectural results as demonstrated by the successful completion of many and varied project types within his portfolio including residential, commercial, health, and hospitality projects. Several of which have achieved major Architecture awards. In 2014 he led the Bates Smart / Irwin Alsop team which won the overall Australian Timber Design Award for the Dandenong Mental Health Facility.
PETER ASHFORD Peter Ashford is an Associate Professor in Construction at the University of Melbourne. He has lectured in structures and construction technology for over 20 years. Prior to this, he was self-employed as a building consultant. He was also a director of his father’s residential construction company in conjunction with an associated timber, joinery and hardware business. Expanding his timber interests, he first established a wholesale distribution company that sourced green hardwood, value added to it by air and kiln drying to produce select grade Victorian ash hardwood. He later added an importing company that wholesaled solid timber front entry doors throughout Australia.
SUSTAINABILITY AWARD – ADDITIONAL JUDGES Planet Ark’s ‘Make it Wood’ campaign sponsored the Sustainability Award and assisted in the judging. This award recognises overall environmental outcomes like energy and water efficiency, native plantings and waste reduction as well as measures that ensure a sustainable building through the use of wood. The creative and innovative use of timber is exemplary and showcases the broad range of timber applications in the one building from structural to delicate detail. LVL engineered box beams and coffers across the 20m span of the atrium hall have been used to reduce the carbon footprint of the building. The sculptural LVL beam and coffer forms developed for the underside of the atrium roof, continue and transition down the timber framed and timber lined envelope of the three storey studio suspended from two of the overhead LVL beams. The coffers act as both sun shading and light reflectors into the atrium space and as a structural lateral restraint for the LVL atrium beams. The Melbourne School of Design has been awarded a 6 Star Green Star Design and is the first education facility to be awarded the maximum 10 Green Star innovation credits.

DR CHAU CHAK WING - UTS BUSINESS SCHOOL Daryl Jackson Robin Dyke & Gehry Partners LLP Structural Engineer: ARUP Fabricator: F & D Normoyle Engineering Builder: Lend Lease Photographer: Peter Bennetts This year The People’s Choice award was a mammoth task, after thousands of visits to the site and votes received. The People’s Choice Award for 2015 has been won by UTS Business School - Dr Chau Chak Wing Building. Two oval classrooms within the UTS Business School – Dr Chau Chak Wing Building have been designed in the fashion of a bird’s nest using a stacked series of large laminated timber beams in a ‘Jenga-style’ arrangement. The classrooms also provide a character defining sculptural form within the building’s foyer. The use of timber exemplifies the architectural and structural innovation, which characterises this highly sophisticated building, and it has been used extensively as it is a guaranteed way of adding warmth and character. It’s a way of humanising the spaces without adding decoration to reinforce a collaborative manner of teaching and learning. The glulam could act as both the structure and internal and external finish to the classrooms in terms of colour and texture. It also offered the structural capacity to support the large span timber-concrete composite floors.

Residential Class 1 – New Buildings
RED HILL HOUSE Duckbuild Architecture Builder: Coastbuild Projects Photographer: Peter Bennetts Sitiuated on top of a hill with views past a vineyard to the bay, the aptly named Red Hill house forms a contemporary rural villa. The house form has both a Nordic village character as well as a nod to local beach side dressing boxes. This house, a timber and glazing abstraction, reflects both literally and metaphorically the natural features of the surrounding water and woods. Silvertop Ash used as cladding, portico heads draped in separated rough-saw Oregon reveals the house entry points. Articulation in the cladding, roofs, posts, slats, steps and decking creates interest in the structure. Silvertop Ash decking runs along the north, aligning land contours, providing views under a timber pergola. The interior is also heavily expressed in timber with pine lined cathedral ceilings and cruciform planned French Oak timber floorboard halls lead from south entry, north to the pool, east to the adults end or wests a kid’s zone.

Residential Class 1 – Alteration or Addition
DULWICH HILL RESIDENCE CplusC Architectural Workshop Structural Engineer: Partridge Partners Photographer: Jackie Chan The project involved creative utilisation of timber in all aspects from structure and cladding to external amenities for its aesthetic appeal and thermal performance; adding warmth to the existing period detail home and creating cool breezes through the three storey house by thermal juxtaposition of lightweight addition and existing double brick house. An egg-shaped bathroom pod with integrated outdoor seat was strategically placed in the north-west corner of the openplan kitchen/dining space. Large Western Red Cedar framed sliding doors disappear seamlessly into the pod, offering a sense of being in a covered outdoor room. The profile of the Western Red Cedar shiplap cladding to the pod were carefully selected to match the door frame to achieve a seamless smooth curved form. The egg-shaped cut out under the existing stair was lined with clear oiled Western Red Cedar panels adds warmth to the dark long hallway and collection to bathroom pod. It provides a comfortable play space and reading nook for the children.

BEDFORDALE HOUSE Suzanne Hunt Architect Structural Engineer: Calibre Consulting Builder: Gransden Photographer: Robert Firth A cluster of Japanese-influenced pavilions cut lightly into the West Australian landscape with stone exterior and timber-softened interior. With basalt and slate a strong theme on the exterior, an extensive use of Australian timbers were employed inside to warm the interior and build a soulful materials palette in keeping with the location and design intent of the home, while also engaging the eye and creating a sanctuary feel. Timber extends from ceilings and walls to creating functional sculpture (bookcases, island bench, etc) that act as room dividers to replace the need for traditional walls. Stained Victorian Ash extends from walls to the ceiling, battens and the eaves. Walnut veneer has been stained darker as wall panelling, while left natural with a matte finish as cabinetry. Teak’s robust form creates a strong line in windows and doors, where transoms have been created to hide the utiliarian aspects of Australian living. The latter is also a strong Japanese design element.

BOX OFFICE MELBOURNE Cox Architecture Structural Engineer: Calibre Consulting Fabricator: Matherson Construction Group Builder: ICMG Victoria Photographer: Tommy Miller The key drivers of the project were the desire to create a workplace that would deeply affect individuals’ perceptions of being ‘at work’ and generate new and more engaging ways of working. The design decision to use timber as the main component of this fitout was the primary palette to create the signature interior form and finishes which distinguish the project, resulting in a place that radiates warmth for the occupants and extends a generous welcome to clients and visitors on arrival. This central events hub links the practice across two levels and is a carefully crafted, timber-slatted box with tiered timber seating capable of containing an event or activity whilst offering transparency across the workfloor and between levels. The choice to use blackbutt compliments the original character of this warehouse style space and in applying it to all of the surfaces, including the seating plats, screening battens and vertical surfaces, a highly tactile experience, that is still highly resilient, has been created.

Landscape
ARMSTRONG CREEK WEST PARKLAND AND WETLAND - VILLAWOOD PROPERTIES MDG Landscape Architects Structural Engineer: Calibre Consulting Landscape Contractor: Programmed Property Services Photographer: James Newman Armstrong Creek West, Park and Wetland were created to provide the early social building blocks for the development of a new community situated on Armstrong Creek in the south of Geelong. The natural character of the Armstrong Creek corridor has driven the design of the public realm. Consequently, the materials chosen for incorporation into the Park and Wetland were to have a softer more natural feel, rather than a slick “manufactured� character. Within this context, timber was chosen as the natural material for use within the project. Timber features heavily in all areas of the landscape design, including key elements in the creation of a constructed wetland, a rehabilitated creek, a playground and community areas. The brown shades of Spotted Gum and the blond hues of Blackbutt have created a tonal palette that is highlighted in the focal structures of the shelter, sculptural pencil posts and Wetland boardwalk. These important structures are supported in the landscape by other bespoke timber elements in the forms of playground equipment, furniture, fencing and decking.

Stand-Alone Structure
ORIGAMI POOL HOUSE MADE Architecture Structural Engineer: MacLeod Consulting Builder: MacLeod Consulting Photographer: Jamie Diaz-Berrio Inspired by Japanese origami and the sea caves of Lagos, the Origami pool house is conceived as a permeable structure - sheltered yet open, intimate yet spatially voluminous. The canopy of folded planes float over the existing pool and blur the lines of enclosure and accentuate connectedness with the surrounding spaces. The tonal warmth and texture of timber was needed in a structure that reads more as a timber sculpture set amongst the backdrop of lush garden surrounds. Timber has been used for external wall cladding, internal ceiling and wall cladding, as well as decking. Treated timber cladding as a series of folded that envelope the existing pool was used to compliment and soften the mass and heaviness of the existing masonry dwelling. Western Red Cedar was employed for its durability for outdoor use, and then was matched the same internally to form a single folded skin. As the project involves the enclosure of a pool, Western Red Cedar also handles changes in moisture internally, which was important in the selection of a matching materials.

GARANGULA GALLERY – FURNITURE AND JOINERY Fender Katsalidis Mirams Architects Structural Engineer: Robert Bird Group Fabricator: Interior Constructions Builder: Manteena Photographer: John Gollings As aboriginal art tells a story, the building interiors tell a story through use of crafted, recycled and locally sourced timber and materials. Artwork is also embedded in the building fabric seen with gallery walls being charcoal grey, deferring to colourful aboriginal art and pivot open to create a long dining gallery. This combine with recycled tallowwood floors and acoustic timber slat ceilings are linked by an artefact gallery veiled in an operable screen of weathered steel. This gallery features individually designed display cases with timber veneer walls and polished concrete floors. This palette of materials continues throughout ancillary spaces, opal and silver galleries underground. All furniture was designed bespoke and fabricated locally in recycled timber.

PORT MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB SPORTING AND COMMUNITY FACILITY k20 Architecture Structural Engineer: MacLeod Consulting Fabricator: Completed by 2Construct Carpentry Team Photographer: Peter Bennetts The building construction methodology adopted FSC sourced timber throughout the entire building, and was designed to provide high levels of local content and local labour to construct the pavilion. Timber, a high carbon sink, was used in the design to provide cost effective outcomes using standard off the shelf locally sourced timber materials and timber components. The building included LED fittings, sustainable plywood linings and extensive use of plywood in place of plasterboard, with the use of plasterboard limited to the administration offices. All timebr was sustainably sourced including engineered timber flooring with low maintenance and low VOC coating suited to chemical free cleaners were also adopted. Further ESD initiatives included incorporating underground rain water tanks for toilet cisterns and landscape irrigation, solar hot water units, exhaust systems with makeup air, low energy and high performing mechanical supply air conditioning systems. The building is highly insulated, exceeding minimum standards and included double glazed thermally broken glazing systems.

Rising Star
INVERMAY HOUSE Michael Moloney of Moloney Architects Structural Engineer: TGM Ballaret Fabricator: Pickering Joinery Builder: Spence Construction Photographer: Michael Kai A love of natural material is on display in the Invermay House and the timber is at the heart of it. With touches of black steel, glass, and raw concrete a functional family home has been created to respond to its bush setting. The spotted gum timber cladding was the most suitable material, due to its natural bushfire resistance, light weight, ease of construction, and its infinite design flexibility. The cladding has bene left to weather to give the house a graceful aging face as it greys. Timber character expressed in the formwork surface gives character to the thermal mass concrete walls, softening its appearance and giving it a texture and tactility that compliments the timber cladding. The interplay of light is critical to the design. During the day, fine timber screens control the sunlight and create dappled patterns of light and shadow that stretch across the interior. At night, internal timber ceilings and walls create a welcoming glow to come home to. Timber was an important part of the design, an infinitely adaptable material from the timber battens facades and internal timber lining, to the firewood that burns in the slow combustion stove - wood literally warms the heart of this home.

Small Budget Project
ARTIST’S STUDIO THORNBURY Chan Architecture Structural Engineer: Richard Lingard And Associates Builder: Dick Reynolds Building Photographer: Folded Bird Photography The Artist’s Studio in Thornbury is a small, yet thoughtfully crafted building that celebrates the warmth, strength and versatility of timber. Environmental sustainability has been integral to this project in terms of water management, thermal comfort, and the materials chosen. The upper walls are clad in silvertop ash, which was chosen for its character and durability, with the intention of allowing it to silver over time, inspired by the colour palette of the Australian native vegetation surrounding the studio. As a contrast to the first floor, the ground level of the building consists of an organic curved wall that compliments the shape of the pool. This wall is clad in spotted gum vertical battens, which was chosen for its strength, durability and ability to be used on curved walls. The internal floors, walls and ceilings of the studio are all wrapped in solid blackbutt flooring, chosen to provide a light, even toned interior that would wear well, whilst providing warmth, texture and tactility to the space.

ANSTO BUILDING 90 ELECTRON MICROSCOPY FACILITY Jacobs/TTW Structural Engineer: Taylor Thomson Whitting Fabricator: Watpac Builder: Watpac Photographer: John McRae The new Electron Microscopy Building has been designed to house four microscopes with support space and an independent isolated plant room. The most crucial design requirement for the facility was to mitigate and shield against magnetic fields, noise, vibrations, room temperature, humidity variations and pressure changes to ensure the housed microscopes can work to their maximum potential. This was predominantly achieved through the physical isolation of each laboratory, and the extensive use of engineered timber in the main facility building for the faรงade, portal frame, roof and wall structures enclosing the microscope laboratories, as well as the internal corridor walls throughout the building and mezzanine offices. The primary structure of this project is composed of radiate glue laminated timber portal frames. The primary timber frame is only concealed by ceiling and wall linings where required for the function of the room, generally they are left exposed. As such the appearance of the engineered timber products were defined by their structural performance and consistent with clear finishes of the building cladding system and fenestration.

Recycled Timber
GARANGULA GALLERY Fender Katsalidis Mirams Architects Structural Engineer: Robert Bird Group Fabricator: Interior Constructions Builder: Manteena Photographer: John Gollings The gallery is embodies a refined palette of materials consisting of timber, rammed earth, concrete and weathered steel. Of this recycled timber reclaimed from the Hornibrook Bridge in Queensland plays a vital role in telling the storey of Garangula and its context and is therefore used extensively throughout the building. Upon assessment the recycled timber was resized to the most efficient lengths to fit the gallery spaces and minimize waste, eliminating the need for new timber to be sourced and the environmental consequences associated. Internally, the gallery floors were constructed using Tallowwood complimented by the slatted timber ceiling. The joinery units, fixed furniture and loose furniture were entirely made of Iron Bark, demonstrating dedication to incorporating it. Externally, recycled Iron Bark was used to clad the gallery boxes depicting the local river system and giving rise its origin, while bringing the material of the interior and exterior of the building together.

LIVING EDGE SHOWROOM, SYDNEY Woods Bagot Fabricator: Elan Construct and ABProjects Builder: Elan Construct Lighting: Light Practice Joiner: Elan Construct and Retail shelving by ABProjects Photographer: Trevor Mein A 1940s wool store has been converted into the flagship showroom of furniture retailer Living Edge. The interior features an eight-metre-high lobby and stretches 1900 m2. Preserving the natural heritage was a key component in the design process. Creating unique timber architecture “pods” within the heritage building helped to compliment the retail and workplace of Living Edge. The architecture pods have been strategically placed, three dimensionally throughout the space to display and connect Living Edge’s retail products. Each pod is varied with finishes ranging from clear lacquered veneers to colour lacquered veneers. The whole space provides a range of functions including a retail space, co-working space, workplace as well as being a furniture showroom. The veneers have been strategically laid in a particular way to suit the species and other furnishings that have been showcased. American walnut and oak veneers were chosen to co-ordinate with the furnishings that were displayed in the showroom.

CLAREVILLE HOUSE TERROIR Architects Structural Engineer: SDA Structures Builder: The Construction Connection Photographer: Brett Boardman A key design driver was to locate the house sympathetically within the natural features of the site, particularly the stunning views out and across Pittwater. A native timber species to the local area spotted gum, the house is designed to weave in and around existing spotted gum trees on the site. Timber cladding as an external material locates the house within the foreshore environment and as a contemporary piece of architecture whilst still inhabiting a natural setting. As a cladding material timber is also dexterous enough to follow the complex geometry of the house where living spaces are set based on key view. Each key view is then framed by timber to enhance the notion of living within the tree canopy.

THE CHARMING SQUIRE Baber Studio, Collins and Turner, D’Occhio Structural Engineer: ARUP Fabricator: Kennedy Timber Builder: Pnnell Constructions Photographer: Toby Scott Photography Natural timeless finishes celebrate the authenticity and spirit of ‘The Charming Squire’, through an approach of material honesty, visual simplicity, comfort and warmth, referencing to the physical environment of colonial Australia during the life of James Squire. Timber was a critical material used to achieve a natural, high quality and unadorned material that will improve with age. Rough sawn Queensland spotted gum is used to form a flowing landscape-like approach to walling and reappears for the flooring in the upper function rooms. Being recycled and therefore perfectly seasoned, the floor was ensured to be free of cracking movement and porosity. The outstanding feature of the timber floor is its absolutely unmatchable performance and appearance in a high traffic commercial space. SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY FACTORY OF THE FUTURE H2o Architects Pty Ltd Structural Engineer:Taylor Thomas Whiting Fabricator: Timber Imagineering Builder: Ireland Brown Constructions Pty Ltd Photographer: Trevor Mein The interior design for the Swinburne University of Technology Factory of the Future is a showcase for education and research in the next generation of manufacturing processes. The design locates a two storey high timber ball in the centre of the Factory, as a space divider, an accommodator for interactive collaborative activities and a signifier of the future. The timber ball was manufactured from a curved timber substructure covered with a panelised curved timber ply skin. These timber components were modelled, curved and cut using leading edge computer aided design and computer guided cutters, before being skilfully fitted into place by hand. The timber skin mimics the construction technologies used for submarines and space shuttles. The upper internal level of the dome has been left deliberately raw and expressive of its construction to reveal the true characteristics of its fabrication and structure. The outside timber shell is slick and tinted in a pinkish tone and then sealed to resemble an egg, creating a tension of whether it is made by man, or by machine or by nature.

KUNUNURRA COURTHOUSE TAG Architects and iredale pedersen hook architects, architects in association Structural Engineer: Terpkos Engineering Pty Ltd Fabricator: Am Land, Basie Building Services and Wangara Cabinets Photographer: Peter Bennetts The Kununurra Courthouse explores the capacity of timber to capture spatial qualities that are unique to the remote town of Kununurra. Hidden Valley contains unusual sandstone formations and several examples of rock art and is significant to the local indigenous peoples, the Miriuwung and Gajirrabeng. Timber has been used based on its connection to the place of Kununurra, to capture the unique colours and patterning of the surrounding gorges and cliffs. The foyers are dynamic and active and the courtrooms are more passive, calm and contemplative. They reflect the requirements of the brief and expected behaviour. The public entry space and waiting spaces of the new courthouse reinterprets this space, material and patterning transforming this in to a space that is familiar, comforting and engaging for all visitors. It is light and dark, subtle and textured. It is fractured and in a strata that shifts and crumbles. In contrast the courtrooms are lighter, more subtle in form, texture and patterning. They focus attention to the events of interior without distraction and find a balance.

Timber Windows and Doors

Landy and Associates Pty Ltd Builder: Frank Pty Ltd Photographer: Derek Swalwell Photography On an extremely small parcel of land this spacious structure appears as a joinery item, internally integrating concrete, hoop-pine and Tallowwood. Timber doors and windows were used over other materials to keep the consistent, earthy and warm themes ongoing throughout the entire house. Sustainability has been an important factor when deciding to use timber windows and doors within this project. Recycled and hard-wearing timber was selected to construct the frames to ensure that minimal wastage, energy efficient and visually stunning. The custom made window and door frames were a collaboration between the window manufacturer and the builder and were locally constructed to reduce the embodied energy of the project. Timber window and door frames are highly energy efficient as they do not conduct heat and they perform extremely well when combined with double glazing. These energy efficient factors in conjunction with the design and location of windows and doors to promote cross-ventilation, helped to reduce the overall amount of artificial heating and cooling required.

Semester 2, 2014 Builder: The Students Of ARCT5597 Timber In Architecture. Semester 2, 2014 Photographer: David Bylund This project was commissioned by the City of Nedlands to bookend the formal rose garden with a new sculptural seating structure that would honour the original intent of the park and compliment the existing heavy timber structure at the entry. Its design reflects the complement geometry found within the petals of an unfolding rose. Two separate but seemingly intertwined structures rise up from the ground as a bold reinterpretation of a rose and as an acknowledgement of the sacrifice of Australian service men and women while also providing a quiet reflective seating area for visitors to the park. Treated pine was the material of choice for this project as it will be subject to a range of weather conditions for many years and must remain structurally sound and visually attractive. Two oils were used to differentiate various elements within the design. A lighter honey coloured finish was required for the secondary elements and darker richer brown for the primary elements. It is expected that it will grey off over time and become more homogeneous.
