Welcome to the 9th Annual Edie Creek Angus 2-Year Old Bull Sale! We had a great year due in large part to the demand for the bulls at our sale last March. We are truly grateful for all the bidders and buyers that made our sale a success. We believe that the daughters in particular of the Edie Creek Bull(s) you purchase will serve you very well for many years with minimum inputs and maximum opportunity for profit. That is our goal, reflected by the way we run our own purebred cowherd, just as tough as any commercial outfit. Spring 2015 saw our cow herd calving in May-June. The benefits surpassed our expectations. The herd is no longer dependent on high quality winter feed and the cows can use the good quality spring grass to flesh up on as they calve. There were no night checks and we also had healthier calves & no scours - without even using scour vaccines. Unlike the 2014 calf crop, we had ZERO frozen ears on calves! 2015 was also the first year we did planned holistic grazing as opposed to just “rotational grazing. The difference is that we planned for pastures to get adequate rest before being re-grazed as opposed to grazing until a certain amount of grass in the pasture was utilized. We planned to give our (mostly alfalfa-based) pastures 45 days of rest, and they ended up getting at least 60 days of rest! We still have lots to learn, & expect the rest period to increase as the land improves under the holistic planned grazing management. Another benefit of planned grazing was late-season grazing of stockpiled grass, which meant we could graze right until our December 1st weaning date, and also meant that the calves were on lush sod-covered pastures through the awfully wet fall. If they had been weaned in September and put into feedlot pens, they would have been fighting mud and much more disease pressure. It truly was a win-Win-WIN for the Land, Cattle, & PEOPLE! You are invited to join us at our sale March 12th in Ashern, MB. We will be bringing approximately 34 Rugged 2 year old bulls to the sale, including 5 Red Angus. You are also very welcome to come by the farm and inspect the bulls before the sale & are strongly encouraged to see the cowherd behind the bulls you might be interested in. Our breeding focus is decidedly Maternal, and when crossed with Terminal sires, can minimize cowherd costs and maximize profit!

With much gratitude,

Jonathan & Stefan Bouw & Families Â

Fleshing Ability that is Bred in, not “Fed-on” for Sale day

Genetic progress in cattle is a journey fraught with distractions and deception. We are 16 years into that journey and have learned many a tough lesson along the way. There is no such thing as “free lunch”: not in physics, economics, or in producing beef cattle. If you want more production, you’re gonna have to pay for it with more feed inputs to get there. Finding the balance of performance that suits your environment truly is the sweet spot in beef production. Solar Energy is the closest thing we have to a “free lunch”, so we need to maximize our capture of solar energy. We have come to believe that getting the cowherd right is the most important foundation for beef production, since feeding that “factory” is your biggest expense. Matching your cowherd frame score to the resources in your environment is the next most important step after reducing your inputs. Edie Creek Angus bulls can help you with that part. The 2-Year Old bulls in this sale are red-meat-packing breeding machines that will breed more cows for more years & add POUNDS without adding FRAME. They are maternal masterpieces that will leave you fabulous females that will flourish in the real ranch environment. Our Bulls will sire calves that are born easily and nurse quickly. They will establish an efficient, Maternal “Cowherd Factory” for you which can then be mated with Terminal sires to add hybrid vigor performance and the "flavour of the day" in hide colour. Doing this will create a functional, long-living cowherd that will wean calves at the highest efficiency in your commercial ranch environment. MODERATE-MATERNAL-EASY CALVING-EASY FLESHING We have had an exciting year: We are very pleased with the embryo calves born here in 2015, and in fact plan to use a couple of the OCC Hunter sons to breed heifers this coming spring! We truly believe that our Genetic Progress is headed in the right direction. We have another 8 embryo calves coming in 2016, including offspring from OCC Joker x OCC Karen! We acquired a top Donor cow from Ohlde Cattle Co in OCC Dixie Erica 693N. She has produced 4 herdsires used in the OCC herd as well as numerous embryo progeny transmitting their genetic excellence in top cowherds across the country, including the Commercial cowherd of Gabe & Paul Brown in North Dakota. This cow will be an important part of our genetic direction in the future, and we are extremely excited to have her and her 2015 born Bull Calf in their new home as of February 4, 2016!! We also had the privilege of using 3 new-to-us bulls this year: OCC X-Factor 677X, a 5 year old Herdsire from the heart of the Ohlde herd, OCC Easy Red 868A, an Easy-calving Red Angus bull packed with muscle and a pedigree packed with the great Black Angus bulls from the OCC program, and MH Titan 752, a 9 year old Herdsire from Monte Howrey in South Dakota whose daughters are proven to be Efficient, Fertile, and Hardy! You’ll notice this year a number of sons of our own Edie Creek Angus Bulls offered for sale. ECA 5Y, ECA 79Y, & ECA 87Y are top-quality bulls that we used ourselves, demonstrating confidence in the direction of our program. ECA 5Y sold half-interest through this sale. There are a number of bulls selling this year again that are of the caliber that we would gladly use ourselves. We really enjoy talking to other cattlemen, so please give us a call if you want to talk about our breeding program or any of the bulls for sale!

Bull Development These bulls have been raised on their mothers’ milk and grass. Once they were weaned, they went out and Grazed until early November. They were then brought in and fed Grass-Alfalfa silage with 2 lbs of Barley and free choice oat straw. In June they were turned out to pasture, with no supplements, where they grew well until the end of November 2015. At this time, they came home and received a Grass-Alfalfa silage ration with 4 lbs of barley, 2 lbs of sunßower screenings plus free choice hay. They have not been pushed with hard feed so that they will breed longer for you. Bull Program Bulls can be kept at Edie Creek Angus for $2/day until May 1st. After that, the cost will be $3/day. Free delivery available to Ashern Auction Mart. If you haul your bull on Sale day we will give you a $50 discount on each bull. Bulls MUST be insured if they are to be kept on our farm.

We will not provide the replacement or credit for a bull that is physically injured or mismanaged. It is the responsibility of the buyer to insure their bulls.

“* ” BU L L EVA LUATIONS E X P L A I N E D : Calving Ease:

Based on the bull's birthweight, his parents' birthweight, and his own EPD's. Also based on the assumption that the bull will be breeding small-framed Angus/British cattle--if the bull will be breeding larger-framed Continental cattle, a three-star (***) bull may work on heifers without any trouble. These are simply guidelines to help your decision making. You are ultimately responsible for the matings of your own cattle.

Calving Ease Rating:

"*" - Suitable for breeding cows only - 100 lb+ Birth weights possible “**”- Suitable for breeding smaller cows-90 lb+ Birth weights possible "***" - Suitable for breeding cows and larger-framed, mature heifers - 85 lb BW’s "****" -Suitable for breeding heifers + cows too “*****” -HEIFER BULL, easy deliveries with vigorous calves at birth!

Udder Rating:

Based on the quality of the dam's udder structure and teat shape and size. Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be an average, functional udder, while a score of "5" would be a perfectly level udder with small, shapely teats.

Forage Rating:

Designed to predict the ability of the bull's offspring to thrive in a forage-only environment. The forage rating is also a suitable indicator of the bull's own ability to stay in good flesh on a low-energy ration ("easy-keeping-ness"). Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be moderately easy fleshing, while a score of "5" would be very easy fleshing and his offspring would finish on forages alone.

Worthy Man is one AMAZING bull! He stays fat as a seal and adds thickness and length to his calves. Putting this bull into Edie Creek pedigrees has already paid off. Everyone who sees him is just amazed: no one has seen such a rump on an Angus bull. And he does it without grain. He also is a terrific calving ease bull, so when we stack this kind of genetic ability in our herd, we are getting the bases covered! This year’s sons are all out of first time calving heifers. We have been extremely glad to own him and have him walking our pastures! You will find his sons come sale day.

Bigger framed OCC Legacy son who indexed 114 at yearling. Dam is calm, hard working and designated Elite since 2011. Again more birthweight than usual, we strongly suspect that terrible winter of 2014 made the cows over-compensate and feed their calves too well in utero, resulting in higher BW than normal. This bull is smooth made and will calve out great on cows.

Testimonials

Customer

“I have been really pleased with the 7 Edie Creek Angus Bulls I’ve bought over the years. The temperaments are excellent and they stay in good flesh much easier than any other bulls I’ve bought. I have to be careful in the spring when I’m feeding up my bulls for breeding, because the Edie Creek Bulls get too fat! The daughters of these bulls are making excellent cows in my tough environment” - Mark Emilson, Vogar, MB “You have discovered the direction the Angus breed was known for and should continue to be known for. Fads come and go but it has to be the basics that we all need to stick to: the cow which needs to problem free, calve regularly, raise a good calf close to half her mature weight at weaning and convert the cheapest form of energy available, grass! Efficiently. Congratulations on sticking to your vision. We are very happy and enthusiastic about the bulls we have purchased over the last number of years. They are honestly the easiest keeping cattle we have come across for a long time. The libido of these bulls have been outstanding, with several having breeding group sizes of up to 60 animals. Their daughters are now coming into production in large volumes and are proving to be easy keeping, medium framed, good uddered and good temperament. Keep up the great work! I look forward to continue adding your genetics to our cow herd! - James Kebernik, Black Rose Ranch, Beausejour MB

The Cow is the foundation of beef production. Females that can REGULARLY produce calves at the lowest possible cost and expenditure of labor give the highest possible and longest lasting net returns. Edie Creek Angus is using a few select strains of the Angus breed that for generations have focused on the mother cow. Easy fleshing, good-uddered, fertile, intelligent parent stock.
